CHARACTER BACKGROUNDS
Irene Surana: Born on Lothering yet with no memory of it, Irene Surana spent most of her life living on Kinloch Hold. Even though she resented the treatment of the mages by the Chantry and the templars, she usually kept her thoughts to herself, letting Jowan, the closest thing she had to a brother in the Circle, do most of the complaining. She avoided outings as much as she could, spending most of her time in the library doing research on ancient artifacts and places or training with Irving. Because many considered a teacher's pet, she didn't have many friends outside of Jowan, although it never bothered her. Then came the fateful day where she aided Jowan and his girlfriend on an escape attempt. Duncan recruited her into the Wardens and her life was forever changed. Key events of her journey in ending the Fifth Blight would be saving Connor at the expense of Isolde's life, curing the werewolf curse, putting Bhelen on Orzammar's throne and killing an archdemon and surviving. After helping the Grey Wardens re-establish on Vigil's Keep, she used Morrigan's info to look for a cure for the Calling. She was still technically Warden-Commander, but she basically left that title for Nathaniel Howe to take. After Leliana was crowned Divine, she came back to her more and more, to the point that through a missive from Weisshaupt, she was given the "official" title of Warden-Liason to the Divine, and Nathaniel was officially made Warden-Commander. Since then, she barely leaves Divine Victoria's side, and only when she has a really important lead. Once again, she spends most of her spare time researching ancient history and having small dates with Leliana. She wants to propose one day, but she wants a decisive cure for the Calling first.
Her mabari is named Carrigan after an hero in a story she read when she was a child.
She accidentally lead on both Alistair and Leliana, and although she found them both attractive and was fond of them, her heart finally gave in to the bard. She still remains good friends with Alistair.
Being a fan of stories, she loves hearing Leliana talk and talk and talk. Funny enough, this the same reason of why she is good friends with Oghren (barely) and Zevran.
For a while Leliana was jealous of the former antivan crow, until Irene reassured her.
Morrigan helped her to be more outspoken about her issues with the Circle and Irene considers her a good and close friend. For a while she resented that she lied about her true reasons for following her, but they are still on good terms.
After becoming an Arcane Warrior, she received sword training from Alistair, Zevran, Isabela, Sten and Oghren. She only got one lesson from the latter. Never again.
Helena Hawke: The eldest daughter of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke, Helena was named after a mentor of Malcolm during his time in the Circle. After they moved to Lothering, she became very protecting of her sister Bethany and was constantly bickering with Carver about her use of magic. She trained closely with her father until his death, where she saw herself become the protector of the family, specially due to Carver having joined the military. When the Fifth Blight began, once again she and her family were forced to move. On the way the met Aveline and her husband, who sadly was lost to the Blight moments later. She lost Bethany as well to the darkspawn, which has haunted her even since and caused her to increase her bickerings with Carver, which sometimes ended in full blown arguments. With the help of a Witch of the Wilds, they arrived to Kirkwall. There they met Varric, a dwarf who helped Helena make a name for herself. Most of her time on Kirkwall she just wanted to make some coin, spent time on the Blooming Rose and live in peace, but she has bad luck and always ended being dragged unto bullshit. Becoming the Champion of Kirkwall, facing the Arishok in dual, becoming a symbol for the mage rebellion, losing her mother to a blood mage, her brother joining the Grey Wardens, awakening an ancient Tevinter Magister that might have been among the ones who started the Blights and falling in love with both a lustful pirate and a qunari spy weren't part of her planes either but it is what it is at this point. After DA:I, she reunited with Bela and joined the Lords of Fortune. She's basically became the unofficial second-in-command of the group (she came up with the name as a joke and it stucked, much to her chagrin).
She's in very much in love and in an open relationship with both Isabela and Tallis.
She developed Friendship with most of the companions except Carver, Fenris and Sebastian.
Although she likes to distance herself from the use of blood magic, she gave Merrill a pass because she genuinely seemed to use it for a noble purpose.
She regularly writes letters to all of her companions (except Sebastian) after DA2.
Shortly after DA:I, during her time with Lords, she and Isabela reunited with Tallis and they began a romantic relationship. At first they were aprehensive, because Tallis wasn't really interested in seeing other people and Hawkebela didn't want to make things awkward when they did. But she assured them that she had no problem with Helena and Isabela seeing other people, as long there was honesty.
During DA:TV, she took some Lords of Fortune to help in the Free Marches and got stuck aiding Aveline with the Kirkwall evacuation towards Starkhaven. Her reunion with Sebastian was very much awkward.
When news reached her that Varric had died, she refused to talk to anyone at all, drinking non-stop and spending hours on Starkhaven's brothels. She only stopped when Isabela dragged herself through the Eluvians and hold her until the crying stopped. She's been a bit better after that and has been leading her group of Lords in helping refugees across the South.
Cassian Trevelyan:
Born as the unwanted fourth child of Bann Roland Trevelyan and Lady Margo Trevelyan, Cassian was raised under the shadow of his siblings' accomplishments. The oldest one was his brother Roland II, also known as Junior, heir to the Bann who always teased Cassian as being the "spare child". Then there were the middle twin sisters Rebecca and Pauline. The former was a Templar and the pride of the family and the latter is Pauline, a mage and probably the only member of his family that Cassian actually likes. Cassian's relationship with Rebecca wasn't the best as when she visited, she was extremely vigilant in case he turned out to be another mage. About Pauline, Cassian never actually met her in person as she left to the Circle long before he was born. They didn't even knew about each other until Cassian found one of her letters. Since then, that's the only way they have talked to each other. At first, it was his brother who was meant to go the Conclave, but after he got sick Cassian insisted that he went instead, willing to finally orive. And then Breach happened and he became the Herald of Andraste. At first a bit unconvinced, he eventually embraced the title. He has always considered himself a firm Andrastian, despite disagreeing with the many ways the Chantry and the Templars operated. The Inquisition became a chance for him to stand on his own and outside of his family's control. Cassian stopped hearing from her sister when the Mage-Templar War started and only received a letter from his brother "congratulating" him on his achievements. It wasn't until after Corypheus' defeat that he received a visit from his brother. After Solas' betrayal and the reform of the Inquisition, he now still serves as the Inquisitor, helping and leading the Southern efforts during the Sixth Blight.
He once released a swarm of earwigs the first time he went to his great-aunt's summer balls and since then he's forever banned.
He considers Sera the little sister he never had and she loves teasing him about him accidentally flirting with her when they first talked at Haven.
He visits Cassandra the most (duh) at the Hunterhorn Mountains, and sometimes helps training the new Seeker recruits. • He took Solas betrayal bad, becoming very wary of whoever he met. He has relaxed since then.
Probably the only person of his Inner Circle with whom he doesn't talk that much is Vivienne, although they highly respect each other and remain somewhat friendly. He and Sera love pranking her when their paths bring the three together.
He proposed to Cassandra a year and a half after the Exalted Council in a boat date. They got married at the rebuilt Haven Chantry in a wedding somehow officiated by Varric.
Sokari Thorne: Born under the Qun and raised by tamassrans in Par Vollen, Sokari spent most of their life as someone who could never fit in. That earned them the title of Shokaari, which meant something akin to "misfit". When they were of age, they were assigned to be a Tamassran, but after a few years of inadequacy and insatisaction with their role, they insisted to be reeducated. They were made an agent of the Ben-Hassrath, and over time they rose to the rank of Tallis. However, the feeling of inadequacy never left. Years later, they went on a mission to Rivain with other Ben-Hassrath recruits to retrieve an agent who had apparently gone rogue. There, they met a group of Grey Wardens trying to seal a passage to the Deep Roads. Their purposes were briefly conflicted, as their rogue agent had joined the Wardens and was now living under the name of Thorne. However, they arranged to briefly work together to defeat the darkspawn. Unfortunately, the rogue agent died during the battle, and inspired by her, Sokari decided to renounce the Ben-Hassrath and to join the Grey Wardens, effectively becoming Tal-Vashoth. They also decide to reclaim the name of Sokari, while also picking the surname of Thorne from the rogue agent, who in her last breath told them they could use it for themself. Ever since surviving the Joining, Sokari Thorne has been a proud member of the Grey Wardens, still being a pain in the ass to their superiors, but finally being comfortable with who they are. Their life was again forever changed when they met Varric after disobeying direct orders during a darkspawn incursion and being recruited as his second-in-command. Once the Evanuris escaped and the Sixth Blight began, they led the efforts in fighting against the gods, falling in love with Bellara Lutare in the way. Even after the world was saved, they still carry the guilt of choosing Minrathous over Treviso, the death of Davrin and Assan, and Bellara getting captured and blighted.
After defeating the gods, Sokari crossed paths once again with their former bessrathari, Salit (known to Hawke and Isabela as Tallis).
Sokari and Bellara decided to travel together across Thedas helping people and investigating the new form of the Blight.
unlike the previous characters, Katalina exists in a different world state and canon, albeit Modern AUs can bring them together with no problem
Katalina Ingellvar: Katalina was found as a baby in the Ingellvar family tomb of the Grand Necropolis with nothing but a note stating her name. She was adopted by Lady Agnes Ingellvar of the Mourn Watch, the last living member of a decaying noble house. Agnes, due to living in solitude most of her life, was a committed member of the Mourn Watch, so most of the time she left Katalina's raising to the possesed skeletons that took care of her lonely manor. It wasn't until Katalina began developing her magic abilities that Agnes got involved and began training her into becoming a Watcher. Katalina grew a rebellious streak mostly due to what she saw as her adoptive mother only desiring for her to become part the Mourn Watch to continue the Ingellvar like rather than actually caring about her. She spent most of her early tenure running around the streets of Nevarra City, getting into trouble along a group of troublemaking Watchers, much to the chagrin of Agnes and the rest of the Watch. Four years into her tenure, Katalina and a group of other five young Mourn Watchers got involved in the accidental activation of a dangerous artifact. The incident ended with half of the group dead and the other half badly wounded, Katalina among the latter. Her involvement called her membership into question and, had it not been for Agnes' relentless defense of her, she would have been expelled and sent to the Cumberland Circle. Since then, although still being quite unorthodox, she has become a dedicated member of the Mourn Watch and one of its most promising members. She was once again put on the bench after taking direct action during the War of the Banners, despite effectively ending the conflict. She joined Varric in his quest to stop Solas. Her relationship with Agnes is still strained and even with her adoptive mother writing every day, Katalina has never written back so far.
She helps Taash in researching the Qunari tablet as they reconnect with their Qunari roots.
After defeating the gods, she helps a blighted Neve take care of a Minrathous in disarray after the dragon attack.
At one point, she received a letter from her mother and they both began talking again.
