THE DUCHESS OF NORFOLK you can smile when your heart is breaking because you are a woman, and a courtier, and a howard. that's three reasons for being the most deceitful creature on dod's earth. private blog for bloodydayshq.
With a gracious tilt of her head Jocasta silently thanked her companion for the offered goblet. Glancing down at the libation, she swirled the dark crimson ichor about its silver confines, contented upon seeing the body hold โ there was nothing worse than watered down wine, especially in such circumstances. The courts return to Surrey had filled the Duchess with a longing to be elsewhere, alas such luxuries were not even awarded to a woman of her position without permission. She had hoped that an earlier visit to her brother might have quelled the melancholic overtures consuming her thoughts, but they were perhaps more profound than she had originally believed. It would pass with haste, Jocasta quietly reminded herself, there were always countless distractions at court, whether they be political or personal.
Her gaze focused upon the merriment being had before her, the young and lithe forms being hoisted above the ground by their dance partners, each step well rehearsed in time with the melodies wafting down from the terrace. Glancing towards her companion, the woman leaned closer to them so that they might hear her over the general noise of the room. "It surprises me that you do not partake this evening, surely you cannot be void of a partner or two?"

The procession throughout the northern counties had enthralled Jocasta with a sentiment of nostalgic reverence, something that their return to Hampton Court had dampened with surge of sadness that coveted her usual pleasant demeanour. Little took her to the lands of her forefathers since marrying into the Howard family, Arundel castle and the children diverted much of her attention and time away from her beloved lands, with her presence as a courtier demanding much of what time and energy she had left. Yet none could accuse Jocasta of being a mournful character, she had known sorrow in her life and knew that wallowing accomplished nothing. There were always ways of improving ones spirits, no matter how dire the circumstances may have been.
With the ambition of rectifying her sullen mood, the duchess strode with purpose along the corridors to where the Percy apartments were located. Though they were kin, she had sent word ahead instructing Richard to expect her โ she loathed nothing more than inconveniencing people, or being inconvenienced, with an unexpected visit. "Brother." She announced affectionately, stepping through the door with extended hands for him to take as she neared. A kiss place upon his cheek, Jocasta smiled at his ever comforting visage before her, "appease my morose enterprise and tell me you also long for home." Alnwick had not been home for decades and yet within her heart it remained eternally steadfast within her warmest affections. " โ no..." she spoke again before he could answer, "...do not entertain my sullen approach, there is little I loathe more than self-pity. Let us talk of more pleasant topics, how are your children and our dearest Jane?"

BIOGRAPHY:
Jocasta Percy (b.1516) is the only surviving daughter and youngest child of the late Henry Percy, Duke of Northumberland, and Catherine Spencer. Surviving infancy alongside her were her two brothers, Henry and Richard, the latter of which superseding the dukedom following the untimely death of their brother. Of two great English dynasties, Jocastaโs lineage is one many would be envious of. Her Percy blood bounds her heart and soul to the northern regions, their families wealth and power protruding through the annals of history to the Norman conquest. Then, through marriage bloomed her Howard connection, though far from the illustrious pedigree of her own kin, their ambition and political prowess have served them well and they remain one of the foremost families at court.
Having spent her formative years at her families residence in Alnwick, she was bestowed the privilege of a tutor whom educated her far beyond the standard syllabus afforded to girls. Her education stretched beyond dance, music and embroidery, venturing into the classics, politics and finance. She absorbed all that was put before her, mastering french, latin and greek โ her nose frequently buried within a book as she pirouetted and curtseyed, all in preparation for her courtly debut and her impending marriage.
Jocasta had been promised to Norfolkโs heir since the mid 1520s when his family rose in favour alongside the kingโs new favourite, Anne Boleyn. Yet they would not be married until 1434, the union momentarily scuttled by Jocastaโs brief engagement to another noble family and Norfolkโs fleeting marriage. At the untimely end of both dalliances, she married as expected, inheriting a young son whom had lost his mother at birth. Three of her own children would subsequently follow and the duchy was eventually inherited by her husband and under their control, the Howard name has continued to flourish.
Despite the division between the king and queen in the latter years of Henryโs life, Jocasta has remained an ally of Anneโs in preparation for the day that her son would be king and it has seemingly served her family well โ then again, the Percyโs have always been gifted when it came to securing kingly favour. Whilst appearances would perceive her to be a social and forthcoming woman, Jocasta is more private than she lets on, she keeps her ambitions, convictions and fears a closely guarded secret, notions that are seldom shared even with her husband. Politically shrewd and cunning, she is a well informed courtier who is able to bend rumours and speculations to her will in order to accomplish her goals.
