How BuzzFeed designed a system that expects and handles the introduction of new requirements and the potential for failure.
I wrote a bit about designing a robust analytics tracking system for the BuzzFeed iOS app. Part Two coming shortly.
Anamanaguchi Power Supply (2016 Re-Release)
I was on the iPhreaks podcast last week to talk about Swift coding standards. We had a great chat about the why and what of codifying style and patterns in a brand new language, and the recording just went live.

This game Jen and I built with a cool stranger we met at the Jean Claude Van Jam came up the other day and I was happy to see that the domain showhermythailand.com is still up and running.
In case you missed it, just before that game jam, JCVD revealed the unsurprising news that he had had an affair with Kylie Minogue. How could we not make a Street Fighter themed dating sim after hearing that news?!
Perhaps the most amazing thing about this project is that every single quote that you can select to try to flirt with Kylie Minogue on the set of the Street Fighter movie is something that JCVD has actually said.
How to keep JSContext from crashing your iOS 7 app
I found a pretty sneaky JavaScript Core bug recently which was triggered by getting an exception when evaluating JavaScript with a JSContext. When the JSContext that caught the exception is deallocated, it would crash my app. Luckily I ran into this not long before WWDC so I was able to get some help with it in the WebKit lab. As it turns out there was a bug in JSContext's dealloc method that was only just recently fixed, but unfortunately we won't see that fix until iOS8 is out. If you need to support iOS 7 and want to use JSContext to evaluate JS, the fix is very simple; before your context gets released, simply nil out its exception property. Here's a simple code example:
@autoreleasepool {   JSContext *context = [[JSContext alloc] initWithVirtualMachine:[[JSVirtualMachine alloc] init];   [context evaluateScript:@"bad"];   // This needs to get nil'd before deallocation   context.exception = nil; }
So save yourself the trouble and make sure to always clear the exception of any contexts you have used to evaluate code before deallocating it if you're targeting iOS 7.
I made a watercolor version of the album artwork for Anamanaguchiâs Aurora/Densmore single. Itâs definitely one of my favorite album artworks so thank you to whoever the original bit artist is!
Wow, this is awesome! I created the original gif almost four years ago. It's really cool to see it unearthed like this. I only wish I could see your version animated...
I guess I forgot to post this to Tumblr. This was the animated gif art I made for Anamanaguchi's Aurora single back in 2010. It was part of a cool website I built for them, which you can still find here:Â www.anamanaguchi.com/singles/
Top 10 moments from my first day at BuzzFeed
Eating a delicious catered lunch.
Getting a BuzzFeed hoodie. You can never have too many hoodies.
Playing with a shiny, brand-new Retina Macbook Pro.
Walking into the dedicated snack room for the first time. Holy shit.
Getting an invite to try out Githubâs new Atom editor.
Getting a text from a friend that he picked up an early copy of Dark Souls 2 for me.
Running into my old co-worker Shaun at the front desk who was also coming in for his first day.
Remembering that I now work directly across the street from ShakeShack.
Commuting with Jen. Itâs nice taking the same train again and working similar schedules.
Getting to make this list joke.

My arcade cabinets have moved back from the Canvas office to my apartment. I spent a few hours today assembling them back together again. It's a bit more work than you might think because there are a LOT of wires and custom hardware involved in making the best arcade in the city. I realized I should probably make public my old Arcade Otaku post detailing their creation, so here you are:
A Hashing Function for X, Y, Z Coordinates
Taking 5: Nintendo
Earlier this month Nintendo drastically cut its sales forecasts for the fiscal year after they missed their targets during Christmas. This sent everyone with an internet connection into a tizzy suggesting that Nintendo could make buckets of money releasing iOS and Android games and that they should pull a Sega and exit the hardware market (Kotaku wraps it up nicely, thanks Kotaku).
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata addressed this by saying, âItâs not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.â I couldnât agree with him more. Nintendo needs to be Nintendo. They need to make great hardware and make great games for that hardware.
So, while people are yelling for Nintendo to abandon their hardware business theyâre not seeing that Nintendo has 10.1 billion dollars in the bank. Thatâs enough money to allow them to coast for decades.
Itâs undeniable that Nintendo doesnât have the marketshare or the mindshare they had at the start of the last generation. Their new console didnât grab the hearts of the everyman they way the Wii did, but there is still a way for Nintendo to continue to be Nintendo and, perhaps, return to the top.
I have a four point plan:
1) Nintendo needs to pull a Microsoft and start paying developers to develop for their platform. Itâs exactly what Microsoft is doing on Windows Phone, and slowly, itâs working.
Nintendo should be actively pursuing indy developers and spurring games creation for their devices. Have âdev days.â Pay for companies of all sizes to release their titles on your platform. Create tools that make it easier to develop. Start earning back that developer trust.
2) Abandon the Wii U. Make it a âhobbyâ if you want (the way Apple made the Apple TV a hobby for a few years). Sony and Microsoft are using off the shelf parts for their new consoles. Use the same ones. Release modern hardware and price it the same as the PS4. Yes, youâre going to get called out for releasing a âme tooâ box. But you need to do that. If you can put an Wii / Wii U emulator (or really, all the hardware the way Sony installed an entire PS2 in the PS3 at launch) thatâs a bonus. Weâre expecting this console cycle to last 8-10 years again, so even if this was released in 2015 it would still sell for six years.

Number 3. Nintendo has been brought online kicking and screaming and it shows in every aspect of their online experience. They've made some decent progress (Miiverse integration in 3D World stands out as a highpoint), but still have a long way to go. Before they hire UI/UX designers to overhaul their online experience though, they need some more technical talent. The sluggishness of the Wii U Shop, Miiverse, and all downloads makes the experience awful before you even get a chance to pick apart the rest of the UX.
I realized that I hadn't posted some of my favorite design work from the past year, the Panther Moderns logo.
All the other Netrunner crews beware, the Panther Moderns return in 2014...

DrawQuest - iOS App
DrawQuest is a cool new iPad app that my friends at Canv.as developed. Itâs a simple enough idea, every day there is a new drawing challenge. Complete challenges and earn coins. Spend coins on cool stuff (right now itâs just new color pallets but Iâd bet that way more stuff is coming).
The daily challenges are set manually by the guys who made the app, they do not employ any robots (which is kind of awesome because it allows them to be adaptable to things happening now). Â Eventually theyâre going to build in user challenges, so someone like me can challenge any of you guys. Thatâs an idea that I can totally get behind.
As with everything these days you can share your drawings on Facebook or Twitter.
If youâve got an iPad you can download it here. Iâll see you there.Â
