Atypical Autism Traits
The [ original source ] for these is highly gendered.
Under the cut, I am retyping the original source in gender-neutral language, as atypical autism traits do not only appear in girls.
If you are Autistic and your autism matches this profile, it does not mean that you must be a girl; it just means your autism is a kind that often gets missed by traditional diagnostic profiles. These traits were commonly found by researchers in cisgender girls, but they are by no means exclusive to cisgender girls.
The traits are split into four categories.

Appearance / Personal Habits
Dresses comfortably due to sensory issues and practicality
Will not spend much time on grooming and hair. Hairstyles usually have to be ‘wash and wear’. Can be quite happy not grooming at all at times.
Eccentric personality; may be reflected in appearance
Is youthful for their age, in looks, dress, behaviour, and tastes
Usually a little more expressive in face and gesture than some other Autistic people
May have androgynous traits. Thinks of themself as half-male/half female
May not have a strong sense of identity, and can be very chameleon-like, especially before diagnosis
Enjoys reading and films as a retreat, often scifi, fantasy, children’s, can have favourites which are a refuge
Uses control as a stress management technique; rules, discipline, rigid in certain habits, which will contradict their seeming unconventionality.
Usually happiest at home or in other controlled environment.
Intellectual / Giftedness / Education / Vocation
May have been diagnosed as Autistic when young, or may have been thought of as gifted, shy, sensitive, etc. May also have had obvious or severe learning deficits
Often musical, artistic
May have a savant skill or strong talent(s)
May have a strong interest in computers, games, science, graphic design, inventing, things of a technological and visual nature. More verbal thinkers may gravitate to writing, languages, cultural studies, psychology
May have been a self-taught reader, been hyperlexic as a child, and will possess a wide variety of other self-taught skills as well
May be highly educated but will have had to struggle with social aspects of college. May have one or many partial degrees
Can be very passionate about a course of study or job, and then change direction or go completely cold on it very quickly
Will often have trouble holding onto a job and may find employment daunting
Highly intelligent, yet sometimes can be slow to comprehend due to sensory and cognitive processing issues
Will not do well with verbal instruction - needs to write down or draw diagram
Obsessions (passions / special interests) are not necessarily unusual
Emotional / Physical
Emotionally immature and emotionally sensitive
Anxiety and fear are predominant emotions
More open to talk about feelings and emotional issues than people with typical autism
Strong sensory issues - sounds, sights, smells, touch, and prone to overload. (May not have taste/food texture issues.)
Moody and prone to bouts of depression. May have been diagnosed with mood disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, while the autism diagnosis was missed (note from typist: this doesn’t mean the other diagnoses are necessarily incorrect; just that they were comorbid with something that went undetected)
Probably given several different prescriptions to treat symptoms. Will be very sensitive to medications and anything else they put in their body so may have had adverse reactions
9 out of 10 have mild to severe gastro-intestinal issues (e.g. ulcers, acid reflux, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and so on)
Stims to soothe when sad or agitated; rocking, face-rubbing, humming, finger flicking, leg bouncing, finger or foot tapping, etc
Similarly physical when happy - hand-flapping, clapping, singing, jumping, running around, dancing, bouncing
Prone to temper or crying meltdowns, even in public; sometimes over seemingly small things due to sensory or emotional overload
Hates injustice and hates to be misunderstood; this can incite anger and rage
Prone to mutism when stressed or upset, especially after a meltdown. Less likely to stutter than some other Autistic people but may have a raspy voice, monotone at times, when stressed or sad
Social / Relationships
Words and actions are often misunderstood by others
Perceived to be cold-natured and self-centred; unfriendly
Is very outspoken at times, may get very fired up when talking about passions / special interests / obsessions
Can be very shy or mute
Like people with typical autism, will shut down in social situations once overloaded, but is generally better at socialising in small doses. May even give the appearance of being skilled, but it is a “performance”
Doesn’t go out much. Will prefer to go out with partner only or children if they have them (note from typist: I find I have a short list of “safe people” who I prefer to go out with, and I will refuse to go out if none of those people are available)
Will not have many close friends, and will not conform to gender stereotypical activities with friends, or have get-togethers to “hang out” with friends
Will have a close friend or friends in school, but not once adulthood is reached
May or may not want to have a relationship. If they are interested in a relationship, they probably take it very seriously, but may choose to remain celibate or alone
Due to sensory issues, will either really enjoy sex or strongly dislike it
If they like someone romantically, they can be extremely, noticeably awkward in attempts to let them know e.g. may stare or call repeatedly, “fixating” on the person. This may change with maturity
Often prefers the company of animals but not always due to sensory issues.

I know you’re sad, so I won’t tell you to have a good day. Instead, I advise you to simply have a day. Stay alive, feed yourself well, wear comfortable clothes, and don’t give up on yourself just yet. It’ll get better. Until then, have a day.
I feel like Transgender Day of Visability (March 31) is going to get overlooked this year considering the circumstances. I’d like every trans and nonbinary person who sees this to know I am proud of you for existing. Just because we’re in the middle of a pandemic doesn’t mean you were forgotten. :)
life gets so much better when you realize that there are no rules. you don’t have to get your license at 16 if you don’t want to. you don’t have to date anyone in your teen years if you don’t want to. you don’t have to move out in your 20s if you don’t want to. you don’t need to go to any social gathering that you’re not in the mood to go to. and you don’t owe anyone an explanation. sometimes you don’t wanna do something just because you... don’t wanna do it. that’s it. live your life how you wanna live it.
It’s my fault I’m traumatized? Do you realize just how much work goes into traumatizing a person to this level? Can you imagine how much lies and gaslighting it took for me to start doubting my memory and start asking myself if I was insane? Do you understand what amount of violence it took to make me flinch at every movement, expecting a blow? Do you get how many insults and screaming it took to make me believe that everything was my fault, that I was less than a human being, irredeemable and worthless to the core? Do you understand how much humiliation, hatred and threats it takes to make someone this terrified and isolated? This was years and years of hard work! I could never take the credit, for once I lack the dedication, I would yell at myself maybe once and then go “meh lets leave it at that”. I would never have the energy to do this to myself! All the credit goes to my parents, they fought tirelessly to make me this exhausted, terrified, panicked mess overridden with grief and rage, they really put in the effort, and made it all possible.

a true story
This is ridiculously sweet and I’m gayer because of it, awww
Ravenclaw: I alternate between “Maybe I’m smarter than I give myself credit for” and “Maybe I’m dumber than I realized”.
Keep calm and binky on!
With the recent declaration by the World Health Organization of COVID-19 as a pandemic, please don’t panic buy/hoard medical supplies. It prevents those who actually need them to survive from getting them (think of cancer patients, anyone who needs wounds treated, diabetics, and those who are immune-compromised).
Take a breath and realize that you can only control so much, but what you CAN control has a huge impact!
Hand washing, avoiding touching your face, avoiding crowds when it isn’t absolutely necessary, giving people space so you aren’t breathing down someone’s neck, and if you are sick, staying home from work/school/social functions/public transit until you feel better. If you absolutely have to go out while you’re sick, wear a mask or find a creative way of covering your nose and mouth so you don’t cough/sneeze on others.
You’ve got this–we believe in you!
MY BENEFITS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED AND I DESPERATELY NEED HELP!!
*URGENT: PLEASE READ/SIGNAL BOOST*
Thursday, March 5th: Hello everyone, I’m Gemma and sincerely apologize to be remaking this but, things have unfortunately gone from bad to worse for me and I still desperately need help.
As most of you are already aware, I have been struggling financially for quite some time due to my welfare benefits being revoked, under the UK’s controversial changes to how benefits are assessed and assigned. And due to my mental health and some unfortunate DWP mess-ups, my benefits have been on and off sanctions for over a year now.
And despite receiving the results of my medical assessment earlier last month, which stated that I have a limited capability for work due to my persistent low mood and extreme fatigue, my benefits have been suspended without warning or reason. I am currently trying to appeal the decision and make a new claim. However, that will take a few weeks to be processed, and I am also trying to apply for PIP/ESA, which is another long and complicated process.
I currently don’t have any finances to pay anything, and I’m quite literally on the verge of a breakdown, as I am drowning in red notices and final demands as well as overdrawn accounts, as I used to only get £128 per month and that wasn’t enough to cover my rent and bills leaving me in heavy debt. And yesterday (March 4th) my electricity meter had to be replaced and in 14 days I will receive a bill on how much that has cost. *evidence can be provided*
And at the moment, I desperately need help to keep my utilities on, pay my electricity bill and my rent and get groceries as my fridge and cupboards are bare and I have no one else to turn to. My goal is £600 to help me get by until my benefits are reinstated, hopefully in April.
If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would literally save my life, and sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Nobody is obligated in any way to donate if they can’t or don’t want to, I know we’re all struggling.
Thank you for your help 💖
