homesickness (part one) joe keery x reader
hi lovelies! I'm back :) (been super hectic lol but hoping to get some new stuff out, feel free to send requests)
summary: joe is opening for tame impala, which means two months on the road and a very clingy boyfriend who's convinced he won't survive without you, luckily you have something in mind.
no warnings just fluff, maybe clingy joe.
2.5k words
enjoy!!!
Joe has been pretending he isn’t disappointed for almost a week.
And he’s genuinely trying.
Every time the tour comes up, he smiles and says, “It’s okay, baby, we’ll FaceTime.”
But you know him, you know the little signs.
The way he gets quieter, how he starts absentmindedly playing with his rings whenever he’s disappointed but doesn’t want to admit it.
It starts one evening while the two of you are curled up on the couch.
Joe’s laptop is balanced on his knees, the tour schedule open while he highlights different cities.
“So…” he says casually. “Opening night’s gonna be insane.”
“I know.” You smile, moving your hand to play with the ends of his hair.
“This venue’s huge.” He points at the screen.
“Mhm.” You hum back.
“And Kevin’s crowd is a lot bigger than ours.”
“So I’ve heard.”
He glances over hopefully.
“Still can’t make it?”
You hate lying to him more than anything, but somehow you manage a little apologetic smile.
“I’ve tried everything baby.”
Joe nods almost immediately.
“Yeah.”
“It’s just too far.”
“I know.”
“And work won’t let me swap shifts.”
“I know.”
He smiles anyway.
“It’s okay.”
It isn’t.
You can tell.
He closes the laptop after another second.
“I’ll miss you.”
Your heart physically hurts.
“I’ll miss you too.”
Joe immediately shuffles closer until he’s practically lying on top of you, making you let out a quiet laugh.
“I don’t like going away without you anymore.” He sighs into you.
“Oh come on, you’ll survive.” You laugh again softly, wrapping your arms around him.
“Barely.” He frowns.
“You have all your friends with you.”
“They’re alright.”
You raise an eyebrow.
“‘Alright?’”
“They’re replacing you for like months.”
“Oh no.”
Joe sighs dramatically into your shoulder.
“I’ve become codependent.”
“You absolutely have.”
“I blame you.”
You smile as you lean down to kiss the top of his head.
—
Two months.
It doesn’t sound real until the suitcases are actually by the front door.
Then suddenly it feels impossibly long.
But, you keep telling Joe it’ll go quickly.
He keeps looking at you like you’ve personally insulted him.
“Quickly?” he repeats.
“It’s only eight weeks baby.”
“Only?”
“It’s-okay, maybe not only.”
Joe folds his arms dramatically.
You laugh, walking over to straighten the collar of his jacket.
“You’ll be so busy you won’t even notice.”
Joe just stares at you.
“I notice when you leave the room.”
Your heart squeezes.
“Joe…”
“I’m serious.”
He slides both hands around your waist the second you’re close enough, pulling you against him until there’s barely any space between you.
“I genuinely don’t know how I’m supposed to sleep.”
“You’ll sleep.”
“I sleep better when you’re there.”
You smile despite yourself, reaching up to smooth down a curl sticking out from beneath his favourite cap.
“You look very cute.”
He lets out a defeated sigh before resting his forehead against yours.
Neither of you says anything for a little while.
The apartment is strangely quiet. Just the distant hum of traffic outside.
Joe’s thumbs rub slow circles against your back beneath your jumper.
He’s been doing it all morning. Like if he keeps touching you, somehow he won’t have to leave.
—
You’re supposed to drop him off at the airport in 30 minutes which means, naturally, Joe has become even clingier.
You’re trying to zip his suitcase.
He’s standing directly behind you.
Arms around your waist, head resting against your shoulder.
“Baby.” You utter.
“Hm?”
“I physically can’t reach the zip.”
“I know.”
“So let go.”
“No.”
You laugh.
“Joseph.”
“No.”
“You’ll miss your flight.”
“I’ll catch another one.”
“You have soundcheck.”
“Oh they’ll survive.”
You turn around to face him.
“They absolutely will not.”
“I don’t wanna go.” Joe pouts like a kid.
“I know.”
“No, like. I really don’t wanna go.”
The smile fades from your face a little.
“You’ve been dreaming about this for months Joe.” You cup his cheeks gently.
For the first time that morning, Joe’s joking disappears completely.
“I just hate leaving you.” His voice is quieter now.
“I know.”
“It feels wrong.”
Your chest aches.
You lean up, kissing him softly. Just once, then again.
Then once more because neither of you seems capable of stopping.
Joe smiles faintly against your lips.
“I was trying to be sad.”
“You are sad.”
“I know.”
“You just like kissing me.”
“Mm, I really do.”
He reaches you and gently takes your hands in his.
His thumbs rub absentmindedly across your knuckles.
“I’ve been trying really hard today.”
You tilt your head.
“To what?”
“Not make you sad though.”
Your chest tightens instantly.
“I know.”
“I don’t want you crying after I leave.”
You smile sadly.
“Joe…”
“I mean it.” His eyes search yours before his continues, “I know I’m being dramatic.”
“I don’t think you are.”
“You’ll call me every night.” He lets out a tiny breath.
“I will.” You nod with a smile, ”I’ll probably fall asleep halfway through.”
“You definitely will.” Joe smiles.
“You’ll make fun of me.”
“I definitely will.”
“I’ll send you pictures.”
“I expect at least twenty a day.”
“Twenty?”
“Minimum.”
He laughs softly.
Then it fades again.
“I wish you were coming.”
You swallow.
“So do I.”
It’s the truth.
Even if it isn’t the whole truth.
Joe lifts one hand to your cheek, his thumb brushes gently beneath your eye.
“You know…”
“What?”
“I keep thinking, when something funny happens, my first thought’s gonna be ‘I can’t wait to tell her.’”
Your eyes immediately sting.
“And then I’ll remember you’re not there.”
You blink quickly, trying to keep yourself together.
Joe notices immediately.
“No.”
He shakes his head.
“No crying.”
“You literally just made me emotional you loser.”
“I know.”
“I was doing fine.” You try to smile.
“I know.”
“Joseph.”
“I know.”
You laugh through the lump in your throat.
He smiles like he’s won something.
“There she is.”
—
The drive to the airport is quiet.
Joe’s hand never leaves yours.
Sometimes he’s holding it, then he’s tracing patterns across your knuckles or he’s just playing with your fingers while staring out the window.
The radio stays off at first, until Joe finally reaches over and taps the screen.
“Music.”
You glance over.
“What are we feeling?”
“The Beatles.”
Of course.
You smile and connect your phone.
A familiar guitar fills the car a second later.
Joe immediately smiles.
Your favourite.
Here, There and Everywhere.
Not just because it’s beautiful.
Because years ago Joe had told you it reminded him of you and him.
“To lead a better life, I need my love to be here.”
You’d made fun of him for being cheesy, then he defended himself for twenty minutes.
Now neither of you says anything.
The song just plays softly through the speakers.
Your hand still tangled together over the centre console.
“Reminds me of you.” He states under his breath.
Your chest hurts instantly.
You squeeze his hand.
Joe squeezes back.
—
The airport arrives far too quickly.
You hate that, and Joe seems to hate it more.
People are walking past outside.
Flights are boarding.
Life is happening.
Yet somehow you’re both just sitting there.
Stalling.
Joe finally breaks the silence.
“I could miss it.”
“No.”
“I could.”
“You won’t.”
He sighs.
“You never let me be irresponsible.”
“Somebody has to parent you.”
Joe looks offended.
Then smiles despite himself.
Getting through check-in somehow feels worse than the apartment.
Because now it’s real.
Suitcases disappear onto conveyor belts and tickets get scanned.
Everything is moving forward whether either of you likes it or not.
Joe stays glued to your side the entire time, his shoulder constantly bumping yours. His hand finding yours every few minutes, like if he lets go you’ll disappear.
Eventually you spot a familiar figure approaching from across the terminal.
Javi.
The second he sees you both, he immediately grins.
“Look who survived.”
Joe rolls his eyes.
Javi laughs.
Then immediately pulls you into a hug.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You ready to spend two months listening to him complain?”
“No.”
“Neither am I.”
Joe glares.
Javi looks delighted.
—
The security queue begins moving, with suitcases rolling across the polished floor.
Joe doesn’t notice any of it.
He’s only looking at you.
Javi shifts the strap of his backpack onto his shoulder before glancing toward the line.
“Okay the queues moving again.”
Joe nods absentmindedly.
He doesn’t move.
You give him a small smile.
“You should go.”
“I know.”
He says it so quietly it barely reaches you.
Neither of you lets go of the other’s hand.
You stand there in the middle of the terminal, fingers intertwined, as everyone else seems to move around you.
Joe lets out a slow breath.
For a second, you can’t find anything to say.
So instead, you step closer.
Joe meets you halfway immediately, wrapping his arms around you without hesitation.
His chin rests lightly on the top of your head.
“I already miss you,” he murmurs.
“You haven’t even left yet.” You try to let out a soft laugh to disguise the knot you feel in your throat.
“I know.”
He laughs quietly to himself.
“I think that’s the problem.”
You smile into his hoodie, blinking back the tears gathering again.
“I’ll be okay.”
Joe nods against your hair.
“I know you will.”
A pause.
“I’m the one I’m worried about.”
A genuine laugh now escapes you.
“Of course.” You roll your eyes.
“I had to make you laugh one more time.”
You pull back just enough to look at him.
His eyes are glassy.
You smooth the front of his hoodie instinctively, brushing away a piece of lint that isn’t really there.
Anything to keep your hands busy.
Joe watches every movement.
“You always do that.”
“What?”
“Straighten my clothes.”
You smile faintly.
“Someone has to.”
Javi clears his throat gently from a respectful distance.
“Joe.”
Joe closes his eyes for a brief second before nodding.
“Yeah.”
He looks back at you.
Then, without thinking, cups your face in both hands.
His thumbs brush gently across your cheeks.
“So pretty.”
You laugh through the lump in your throat once more.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“I know.”
He leans down and kisses your forehead, lingering there for a moment.
When he pulls away, he doesn’t let go straight away.
He just looks at you.
Like he’s trying to commit this exact moment to memory.
Finally, he gives your hand one last squeeze before slowly letting his fingers slip from yours.
It feels wrong immediately.
Javi smiles to you as he quietly picks up Joe’s guitar case.
Joe takes one step backwards.
Neither of you looks away.
Javi waits a few feet ahead, pretending to be fascinated by the departure screens, giving Joe those extra few seconds without saying a word.
Joe smiles at you one last time.
Then he turns and walks toward security.
You stay exactly where you are.
Watching until he disappears into the crowd.
—
The first few days are somehow worse than either of you expected, because every little thing reminds Joe that you’re not there.
The first text comes before you’ve even woken up.
You open your phone the next morning to seven notifications.
—
Joe 🤍
good morning baby
A minute later.
Ate breakfast.
Then another.
Correction.
I ate breakfast because you would’ve told me off if I didn’t.
You smile into your pillow.
Then there’s a picture with a hotel breakfast tray, coffee, fruit and toast.
Joe 🤍
it wasn’t as good without you stealing half of it
—
Later that afternoon you’re folding laundry when another notification appears.
A photo this time.
It’s a tiny independent bookstore he’d wandered into after rehearsal, with rows and rows of old books.
—
Joe 🤍
you would’ve loved this place
Before you can even reply, another picture.
A poetry book sitting on a shelf.
Joe 🤍
you would’ve picked this one up
Another.
A little ceramic cat.
Joe 🤍
and then you’d spend ten minutes debating if we need him
Another.
Joe 🤍
we did need him btw
You immediately call him.
He answers on the first ring.
“Did you buy the cat?”
“I bought the cat, he has your face.” He states jokingly.
“What does that even mean?”
“I don’t know.”
—
Rehearsals start the following day.
Your phone buzzes during your lunch break.
It’s a video this time.
Joe’s walking around the empty venue before anyone else has arrived, with the stage lights that are still off.
Crew members are setting things up.
He flips the camera around.
“Look.”
The venue is enormous.
Then he pans back to himself.
“I wish you were here.”
The video ends.
Thirty seconds later another arrives.
He’s sitting on the edge of the stage now.
Swinging his legs.
The entire venue empty.
“I keep looking over.”
He turns the camera toward a section of seats.
“I decided that’s where you’d be sitting.”
Sometimes his texts aren’t even conversations.
Just little observations.
—
Joe 🤍
this dog looked exactly like the one you always send me on tiktok
Picture attached.
Joe 🤍
saw a girl wearing your favourite sambas today
Joe 🤍
this cafe has your coffee order
Joe 🤍
this cloud looks like a duck
Followed immediately by,
actually now it doesn’t
ignore me
—
By the third day, even the band have noticed.
You’re on FaceTime while they’re setting up for rehearsal.
Jake walks past behind Joe.
Without missing a beat he calls out, “Have you shown her the dressing room yet?”
Joe frowns.
“No.”
Jake sighs dramatically.
“Thought so.”
Joe looks confused.
“What?”
“You’ve literally spent twenty minutes showing her everything else.” Jake points at the phone.
“Have I?” Joe blinks.
From somewhere off camera, Javi laughs.
“Dude.”
Wes joins in.
“He showed you a vending machine yesterday.”
“It was a cool vending machine.”
“It dispensed soup.”
“It was interesting, never seen one of those before.”
You laugh so hard you nearly drop your phone.
Joe just shrugs.
“I thought she’d like it.”
Javi walks into frame shaking his head.
“He narrates his entire day to you.”
“I do not.”
Jake immediately starts counting on his fingers.
“Baby look at this tree.’”
“Baby look at this sandwich.”
“Baby this hotel towel is weird.”
Wes joins in from somewhere across the room.
“Baby this hallway reminds me of you somehow.”
Everyone starts laughing.
Joe rubs a hand over his face.
“You guys are mean.”
“They’re right." You laugh.
Joe points at the phone.
“Hey, don’t encourage them.”
—
That evening, after rehearsal finally finishes, you get another text.
—
Joe 🤍
i’ve realised something
You reply almost immediately.
You
what?
Three little dots appear.
Joe 🤍
i spend my whole day mentally saving things to tell you
Joe 🤍
i’ll hear something funny and think “wait until she hears this” or i’ll see something pretty and immediately reach for my phone
i don’t think i realised how much of my day is just you
You stare at the screen for a long moment.
Then another message appears.
Joe 🤍
i don’t feel lonely because i’m away from home, i feel lonely because you’re not beside me to experience it with me
Your eyes sting.
You smile to yourself as you type back.
You
just a few weeks, baby <3
He replies almost instantly.
Joe 🤍
i know
still wish you were here
—
God you hated lying to him.

You wake up feeling wrong.
Not sick exactly.
Just…off?
Your stomach twists uncomfortably before you’ve even fully opened your eyes.
At first you try ignoring it, turning over deeper into the blankets toward Joe’s warmth beside you.
Then the nausea hits properly.
Fast.
“Oh my Go-” You practically throw yourself out of bed.
Joe startles awake instantly behind you. “Baby?”
You barely make it to the bathroom before getting sick.
Behind you, you hear Joe immediately scrambling out of bed.
“Hey hey hey.”
He’s beside you within seconds, still half asleep, curls sticking up in several directions.
One hand pushes your hair back while the other rubs against your back carefully.
“Oh baby.” He murmurs softly. “Jesus.”
You groan weakly against the toilet seat. “I’m gonna die.”
“You’re not dying.”
“It feels close.” You groan.
Joe’s voice is still sleepy and rough as he crouches beside you, concern growing all over his face the longer you stay there.
“You okay?”
You nod weakly.
Then immediately regret nodding.
Joe winces sympathetically. “Okay maybe don’t do that.”
You flush finally, sitting back against the wall dramatically.
Joe’s still crouched beside you watching you carefully.
Honestly, he looks more stressed than you feel.
“You’ve been feeling weird all trip.” He says quietly.
“I think it’s jet lag.”
“You threw up.”
“Yes, thank you captain obvious.”
Joe doesn’t laugh.
Which is how you know he’s genuinely worried.
He reaches over immediately, pressing the back of his hand against your forehead.
“You’re warm.”
“I’m always warm Joe, I run hot, you know this.”
“You know what I mean.”
You lean your head back against the wall with another groan.
Joe stays there beside you for another second before suddenly standing up.
You narrow your eyes tiredly. “Where are you going?”
“I’m cancelling today.”
Your head snaps up immediately. “What?”
Joe’s already reaching for his phone. “I’m not leaving you here sick.”
“Joe.”
“You can barely stand.”
“I threw up one time.”
“I know.”
You stare at him in disbelief while he starts opening his messages already.
“Are you insane?”
He looks back at you like this is obvious. “Baby, you’re sick.”
“And you have press.”
“I don’t care.”
“You have the radio thing.”
“I really don’t care.”
“And the meet and greet!”
Joe walks back over immediately, crouching in front of you again.
“I’m not leaving you alone feeling like this in another country.”
Your chest tightens a little at how serious he sounds.
“Joe, I promise you…” you say softer now, “I’m okay.”
“You’re clearly not.”
You sigh dramatically, reaching for his wrist before he can start typing cancellation messages.
“I probably just ate something weird.”
“But you barely even ate yesterday.”
“Okay, that feels accusatory.”
Joe ignores that completely.
“You’ve been emotional all week, exhausted all the time, now you’re throwing up.”
“I’m fine.”
Joe stares at you for another second.
“You promise?”
Something about the way he asks makes your heart ache a little.
Sleepy and concerned, completely ready to blow off an entire work day just to sit beside you on a bathroom floor.
You reach up, brushing messy curls away from his forehead.
He looks ridiculously cute right now honestly, hair sticking up everywhere, big worried eyes, still puffy from sleep.
“You’re very sweet baby.” You mumble softly.
Joe’s expression barely changes. “That didn’t answer my question.”
You smile a little despite yourself.
“I promise I’m okay.”
He still looks unconvinced.
“You can stay home if you want.” He begins carefully.
“And do what?”
“Rest.”
“Joe.”
“I’m serious.”
You reach for his face this time, holding his cheeks gently.
“You are not cancelling your entire day because I threw up once.”
He leans automatically into your hands a little.
Still worried.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“You’ll text me?”
“Yes.”
“If you feel worse you tell me immediately.”
“Yes dad.”
Joe narrows his eyes. “Don’t call me that.”
You laugh weakly.
Finally.
Joe visibly relaxes a tiny bit hearing it.
Then he leans forward, pressing a soft kiss against your forehead.
“You scared me.”
You look at him for a second after that.
Then quietly. “Sorry.”
Joe immediately shakes his head. “No, don’t apologise.”
His thumb brushes softly against your cheek now.
“You don’t have to apologise for feeling sick, baby.”
And unfortunately, that almost makes you emotional again for absolutely no reason.
Joe looks at you for another second sitting against the bathroom wall, still pale and sleepy in one of his shirts.
Then he sighs softly.
“C’mon.”
Before you can even ask what he’s doing, he’s already sliding one arm behind your back and the other beneath your knees.
You let out a small surprised laugh immediately. “Joe.”
“You’re not walking.”
“I can walk.”
“Mhm.”
He lifts you easily anyway.
You automatically curl against him from pure instinct, face tucking into his neck while he carries you back toward the bedroom.
Joe presses a soft kiss into your hair as he walks.
The room is still dim when he lays you back into bed carefully.
You barely even get settled before Joe climbs in beside you again immediately, pulling the blankets back over both of you.
Then he opens his arms toward you without even needing to ask.
You move into him automatically.
Your head settles against his chest while his arm wraps securely around your waist, fingers slipping absentmindedly beneath the hem of your shirt to touch warm skin.
Neither of you talk for a minute.
Joe just holds you close, chin resting lightly against the top of your head.
His body still feels warm from sleep.
You exhale slowly against his chest.
Honestly, you probably do just feel weird from travelling. Your sleep schedule is ruined, you’ve been eating random food at random hours and you’ve walked more this week than you probably have in months.
That’s all this is.
Still.
A tiny thought keeps poking at the back of your brain annoyingly.
Because you’ve been emotional constantly and just so exhausted.
And now this.
You stare blankly at the fabric of Joe’s shirt.
No.
That would actually be insane timing.
And probably impossible.
Right?
You squeeze your eyes shut slightly.
You’re definitely overthinking.
Beside you, Joe’s thoughts are going in an entirely different direction.
Because now that the panic of you getting sick has settled slightly, his brain keeps replaying how tired you looked.
How small and sleepy and clingy you’ve been this whole trip.
The crying, the nausea and unfortunately, one horrible little thought quietly slips in.
What if you’re pregnant?
Joe physically stills for half a second.
Then immediately feels ridiculous for even thinking it.
His arm tightens around you slightly without thinking.
Because for some reason the thought doesn’t scare him the way it probably should.
It mostly just makes his chest feel weird.
He looks down at you quietly.
Your face is half hidden against him, still sleepy, fingers loosely curled into his shirt.
God.
Joe presses another kiss softly against your forehead before he can think too hard about it.
After another second you tuck yourself even closer against him, one leg thrown across his instinctively.
Joe’s hand slides slowly up and down your back beneath your shirt.
At some point, you finally fall back asleep against him.
Completely knocked out.
One arm still wrapped around his waist.
Joe stays awake a little longer.
Just listening to your breathing.
Watching the early morning light slowly brighten the room.
Every now and then he brushes his fingers through your hair, still not fully relaxed after earlier.
Joe presses a soft kiss against the top of your head.
Then very carefully slips out of bed without waking you.
About twenty minutes later he’s standing inside a tiny pharmacy down the street from your rental looking deeply out of place.
Still half asleep.
Baseball cap now shoved onto messy curls.
One hand holding his phone while the other awkwardly gestures toward his own stomach.
The pharmacist watches him patiently.
Joe tries again.
“My girlfriend is sick.”
The woman nods politely.
“She threw up this morning.” Joe continues slowly. “And she’s tired. And nauseous.”
The pharmacist hums thoughtfully.
Joe immediately keeps rambling because he’s nervous now.
“And emotional actually.”
The woman blinks.
Joe realises how that sounded instantly.
“Not like super emotional…" he says quickly. “Just more than normal. Which is fine obviously, totally fine.”
The pharmacist looks mildly amused now.
Joe rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.
“She’s also been exhausted all week and kinda dizzy yesterday.”
The woman pauses.
Then slowly reaches behind the counter.
Joe visibly perks up slightly.
“Yes okay great, medicine.”
She places a pregnancy test onto the counter.
Joe stares at it.
Then immediately looks back up at her.
“No…”
The pharmacist smiles politely. “Maybe yes.”
Joe’s face goes completely blank.
“No no,” he says quickly. “I meant like medicine medicine.”
The woman reaches for another box finally, setting nausea tablets beside it.
Then another.
Tea packets.
Something for stomach pain.
And the pregnancy test still sitting there very confidently.
Joe just stares at the collection now like it personally offended him.
Because now that somebody else said it out loud, the thought suddenly feels way too real.
The pharmacist points lightly toward the pregnancy test.
“Maybe good to check.”
Joe laughs once nervously. “Yeah well.”
The woman waits.
Joe looks back down at it again.
Your crying all week.
This morning.
The exhaustion.
His stomach flips weirdly.
Then horrifyingly, another thought appears immediately after.
You with a baby.
His baby.
Joe presses his lips together hard.
Jesus Christ.
“Okay,” he says quickly before he can think too much harder. “I’ll take all of it.”
When he gets back to the rental, the room is still quiet.
You’re still asleep exactly where he left you, tangled in the blankets.
Joe stands there for a second just looking at you.
Then down at the small pharmacy bag in his hand.
The pregnancy test suddenly feels absurdly loud inside it.
He quickly shoves it deeper down beneath the medicine boxes like hiding it somehow makes the thought disappear too.
Then he quietly moves around the kitchen area making tea instead.
Trying very hard not to spiral.
Because realistically, it’s probably nothing.
People throw up all the time.
People cry all the time.
People get tired.
His eyes drift toward the bedroom again automatically.
—
Joe is halfway through making your tea when his phone starts vibrating across the counter.
He glances down immediately.
His manager.
Joe sighs softly.
Right.
Today.
He answers quietly, instinctively looking toward the bedroom.
“Hey.”
His manager’s voice comes through immediately. “Car’s downstairs in ten.”
Joe rubs a hand over his face tiredly. “Already?”
“You have radio first remember?”
Joe looks back toward the bedroom again.
You’re still asleep.
Completely buried beneath the blankets now.
He lowers his voice even more. “She’s still sick.”
The older man pauses slightly. “Bad?”
“She threw up this morning.”
“Oh man.”
Joe leans against the counter with another sigh.
“I don’t wanna leave her.”
“You want me to push stuff?”
Joe considers it for a second.
Like actually considers it.
Then he looks back toward the bedroom again.
You’d kill him if he cancelled everything.
Especially the meet and greet you both were looking forward to.
Joe already knows exactly how the conversation would go.
Absolutely not Joe stop being dramatic I’m fine.
And honestly, you probably would try getting up and following him out the door half sick just because you hate feeling like you’re ruining plans.
Joe smiles faintly to himself at the thought.
Stubborn as always.
“Joe?” His manager says again.
Joe shakes himself from it. “No, it’s okay.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
A little while later Joe’s standing in the bedroom doorway dressed for the day, bag over his shoulder, staring at you.
Still asleep.
One arm tucked beneath your cheek.
Hair all messy across the pillow.
He really doesn’t want to wake you.
Especially because he knows if you’re awake, you’ll somehow insist on getting ready too.
And truly, you look like you need the sleep more than anything right now.
Joe walks over quietly instead, crouching beside the bed.
His fingers brush gently through your hair for a second before he leans down, pressing a soft kiss against your forehead.
You barely stir.
Just mumble something sleepy into the pillow.
Joe smiles immediately.
“Stay here okay?” he whispers quietly. “Rest.”
You don’t properly wake up.
Just instinctively reach toward where he was a second ago.
Joe’s chest aches a little at that.
“Baby.” He murmurs softly.
He kisses your forehead one more time before standing again reluctantly.
Then he grabs the random notepad from the desk.
A minute later he leaves it beside the tea carefully.
Drink your tea before it gets cold please
There’s medicine too. Take it properly.
Text me when you wake up
I love you
P.S if you throw up again please call me and I’ll come straight back home
J x
Joe smiles faintly looking at the note once before setting it down beside the mug.
Then his eyes flick briefly toward the small pharmacy bag he shoved under the desk earlier.
The pregnancy test is still hidden inside beneath the medicine.
Mostly hidden anyway.
Joe stares at it for half a second too long.
Then immediately looks away again.
Nope. Not thinking about that right now.
Not before live radio interviews and fans.
He grabs his Gucci sunglasses quickly instead before quietly heading for the door.
Still glancing back toward you one last time before he leaves.
—
Hours later, you wake slowly to sunlight spilling across the room.
For a second you just blink sleepily into the quiet.
Then immediately notice Joe’s gone, Your face falling slightly automatically.
Until you spot the tea.
Still sitting warm beside the bed and the note underneath it.
By the time you finish reading, you’re smiling so hard your chest hurts a little.
You stay in bed for another few minutes just staring at Joe’s messy handwriting with the stupidest smile on your face.
The tea is still warm when you finally pick it up, curling both hands around the mug while the city hums quietly outside the windows.
Honestly, your stomach already feels a little better.
Still weird, but definitely better.
Your phone buzzes against the sheets beside you.
joe (baby)
radio interview got delayed 😐
Another text immediately after.
joe (baby)
i should’ve stayed home with you
You laugh softly to yourself instantly.
you
joe i’m literally okay
Three typing bubbles appear almost immediately.
Then disappear.
Then appear again.
joe (baby)
still, what if you like choke.
you
then at least i die loved
joe (baby)
not funny
You grin into the tea.
you
how’s japan’s most stressed boyfriend doing
joe (baby)
currently in a random waiting room against my will thinking about you alone with tummy issues
you
i’m feeling better actually
joe (baby)
oh yeah?
you
mhm i survived
A few seconds pass.
joe (baby)
still wish i was there though
You stare at the message for a second longer than necessary.
God.
You smile to yourself again before finally climbing out of bed.
The apartment still feels sleepy and warm while you freshen up slowly.
You brush your teeth.
Wash your face.
Tie your hair back messily.
By the time you’re done, you honestly do feel more human again.
Maybe it really was just exhaustion.
The thought settles your nerves slightly.
You pad back into the main room wearing one of Joe’s hoodies and shorts, tea still in hand.
The rental is a mess.
Shopping bags from yesterday, Joe’s jacket over the couch, your skincare scattered across the bathroom counter and his itinerary papers abandoned on the table.
You smile a little seeing it all.
It feels weirdly domestic.
Without really thinking about it, you start tidying.
Folding blankets and stacking books properly.
Every now and then your phone buzzes with another text from Joe.
joe (baby)
did you take the medicine
You smile.
you
yes dad
joe (baby)
blocked.
You laugh quietly to yourself while fixing the couch cushions.
Eventually you kneel down beside the desk to move some of the bags off the floor.
Your fingers brush against the small pharmacy bag shoved halfway underneath.
You pause slightly.
“Oh right.”
Joe probably bought more medicine.
You pull the bag out absentmindedly while still half focused on cleaning.
Inside there’s tea packets.
Stomach tablets.
Crackers.
You smile immediately because of course he bought crackers too.
Then your fingers brush against another box underneath.
You pull it out slowly.
And freeze.
A pregnancy test?
Your stomach drops instantly.
Suddenly everything feels very, very quiet.
Your brain goes completely blank for a second.
Like genuinely blank.
You just stand there in the middle of the room, Joe’s hoodie sleeves hanging over your hands while your stomach twists again.
Oh.
Oh my God.
Your eyes immediately flick toward the note beside the tea.
Then back to the box.
Then back again.
Joe saw this.
Or at least thought about it enough to buy one.
Your chest tightens weirdly.
Before your thoughts can spiral any further, your phone buzzes loudly against the counter, making you jump.
joe (baby)
finally got into the studio now
Another text immediately after.
joe (baby)
miss you
You stare at the screen for a second while still holding the test in your hand.
Then slowly set it back into the bag.
Right, okay.
Nope.
Not thinking about that right now.
—
The studio setup is smaller than Joe expected.
Warm lighting and big microphones.
With three interviewers sitting across from him while producers move quietly around behind the glass.
One man and two women.
They speak mostly in Japanese between themselves, smiling politely at Joe every few seconds while one of the assistants helps translate beside him.
Honestly, it’s kind of nice.
Calmer than the American interviews he’s used to at home, hands down and less forced somehow.
Joe settles deeper into the chair, slipping the headphones into his head while the interview officially starts.
The male host introduces him excitedly in Japanese while one of the women smiles warmly across at Joe.
Then the translator leans toward him slightly.
“He’s welcoming you to Tokyo and saying fans here are very excited you came.”
Joe smiles immediately. “I’m excited to be here! Thank you for having me.”
The hosts visibly brighten at him attempting to understand the flow of conversation anyway, even when he misses most of the Japanese.
One of the women asks something next, smiling knowingly.
The translator laughs lightly before translating.
“She’s asking how you’re liking Japan so far.”
Joe’s face softens instantly.
“Oh, I love it here.” He gestures with his hands.
The translator repeats it back while all three hosts nod enthusiastically.
Joe leans forward slightly now, more awake talking about it.
“It’s honestly been one of my favourite trips I’ve had in a long time.”
One of the women says something quickly in Japanese.
The translator smiles. “Because of work or because of vacation?”
Joe laughs softly.
“Definitely both.” He begins. “But mostly because my girlfriend came with me.”
All three interviewers visibly melt at once.
The male host actually presses a hand dramatically to his chest while the women laugh.
Joe notices immediately and starts laughing too.
“What’d they say?”
The translator grins. “They think that answer was very romantic.”
Joe groans quietly. “Oh no.”
One of the women asks another question quickly, smiling wider now.
The translator looks amused already.
“She wants to know what places you’ve visited together.”
Joe immediately smiles again before he can stop himself.
Honestly, talking about you feels easier than talking about himself anyway.
“We’ve mostly just been wandering honestly, we haven’t had too much time to explore yet but just some bookstores, little cafés and walking around at night.” He explains.
Then smiling to himself. “We accidentally helped find a lost child yesterday actually.”
All three hosts react instantly.
The translator’s eyes widen. “Really?”
Joe laughs already. “Yeah. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing.”
The hosts are fully invested now while Joe explains the story badly through translation.
How you immediately ran toward the little girl, how he panicked and how Google Translate basically saved both of you.
The women keep laughing every time Joe describes himself being useless.
“She was way better at comforting her than me I gotta say.” Joe admits easily. “The little girl loved her immediately.”
One of the interviewers says something softer this time.
The translator smiles gently.
“She says your girlfriend sounds very kind.”
Joe goes quiet for half a second.
Then smiles.
“Yeah.” He says softly. “She really is.” The answer comes out genuine.
Joe rubs the back of his neck immediately after like he’s embarrassed by how honest he sounded.
One of the women asks another question.
This time the translator laughs before even repeating it.
“She’s asking if your girlfriend likes Japan too.”
Joe smiles instantly.
“Oh yeah, she loves it.” He states, as if it was an obvious answer. “She cried in the bookstore we visited.”
The hosts burst into laughter immediately.
Joe’s laughing too now.
“In her defence it was a really good bookstore.”
The translator repeats it while one of the women wipes tears from laughing.
“She’s actually sick today though so I’m trying not to bother her too much, otherwise she would be here with us somewhere.” He explains, pointing and looking back to his team and manager.
The room immediately shifts into collective sympathy.
“Aww.”
Joe smiles faintly at the reaction, as his mind already goes back to earlier today, in the pharmacy…the test.
“I almost stayed home with her actually.” He adds.
The male host says something teasingly in Japanese.
The translator grins.
“He says you seem very in love.”
Joe physically drops his head into his hands while the studio laughs.
One of the women says something else softly then.
The translator’s expression warms.
“She says she hopes your girlfriend feels better soon.”
Joe’s face softens immediately.
“Ah thank you.” Joe smiles sympathetically putting his hand to his chest.
“So, the latest album, 'The Crux'. Everybody’s obsessed.” The man utters, smiling across at him
Joe laughs softly. “That’s nice to hear, thank you man.”
“There’s definitely a different feeling to this one too. More personal maybe?”
Joe nods slightly at that.
“Yeah,I think I stopped trying to sound cool all the time.” He explains with a chuckle.
The hosts laugh.
“No seriously, I think I started writing more honestly, stopped hiding behind characters. I found it really important this time to kinda, connect with the people who listen to my music.” Joe explains thoughtfully.
“That usually means somebody inspired it.” One of the girls adds.
Joe’s smile appears instantly before he can stop it.
They all notice.
“Aha.”
Joe groans already laughing. “Oh God.”
“There it is.”
Joe shakes his head smiling to himself. “My girlfriend’s definitely influenced stuff for sure.”
“How could she not?”
“Yeah, she’s kind of impossible not to write about.” Joe chuckles.
The entire studio collectively melts again.
Joe hides his smile behind his coffee cup unsuccessfully.
The interview continues for almost another hour after that.
And somehow, despite Joe fully intending to keep the focus on music, you keep getting brought up anyway.
Or honestly, he keeps bringing you up himself without realising.
The translator smiles.
“He wants to know if being in love changed your writing in any way.”
Joe physically laughs under his breath immediately.
“Jesus.”
The hosts start laughing too seeing his reaction.
Joe rubs his hand over his jaw thoughtfully.
“Probably.”
The translator repeats it and the women immediately react.
Joe shakes his head already smiling.
“What’s your favourite thing to do together when nobody’s working?” The girl asks.
“Nothing.” Joe smiles.
The translator looks confused for a second.
Joe laughs softly. “No seriously. We’re really good at doing absolutely nothing together.”
The hosts visibly adore that answer.
“We just hang out.” Joe continues. “Walk around. Get food. Stay in bed too long. She makes everything feel fun honestly.”
The second the translation finishes, one of the women actually sighs dramatically.
“You are very romantic.” The translator informs him helpfully.
“I don’t mean to be.” Joe laughs.
The male host asks another question while grinning.
The translator looks amused already.
“He says fans think you seem softer lately.”
Joe narrows his eyes slightly. “Softer?”
The hosts nod enthusiastically.
Joe laughs quietly.
“I think I’m just happier, I’m in a really good place now.”
The room collectively smiles again.
One of the women asks another question this time.
The translator’s expression warms slightly.
“She wants to know what your girlfriend is like.”
Joe goes strangely quiet for a second at that.
Then he smiles a little to himself.
“She’s…” he pauses. “A really warm person, I don’t know how to word it honestly.”
The hosts listen closely while he speaks.
“She makes people feel comfortable really fast. Like even strangers.”
Immediately Joe’s brain flashes back to the little girl from yesterday clinging to you.
The way you soothed her without even thinking about it.
His chest does that weird thing again.
“And she’s funny.” He adds quickly before he gets too lost in thought. “Very dramatic. Cries at everything.”
The translator laughs while repeating it.
Joe smiles into his coffee.
“She’d hate me saying that.”
One of the women asks another question immediately after.
The translator grins.
“She says what’s something your girlfriend does that always makes you happy?”
Joe doesn’t even need to think.
“Oh when she gets excited.”
The answer comes instantly.
“She gets excited over tiny things. Like snacks or books or finding little stores.” He smiles more to himself now.
“And she talks with her hands a lot when she’s passionate about something, which I’ve grown to copy now from her.” Joe laughs as he adds.
The hosts listen closely while the translator repeats it.
Joe rubs his thumb absentmindedly against the side of his coffee cup.
“I think when you spend so much of your life travelling and working and constantly moving around, you kinds forget how nice it feels to just have one person that feels like home.”
One of the women literally presses both hands to her chest dramatically.
Joe notices and immediately laughs under his breath.
“She says that was beautiful.” The translator informs him.
“I swear I’m not usually this emotional.” Joe shakes his head smiling.
Another question comes quickly after.
This time the translator laughs first.
“She wants to know if your girlfriend listens to your music before release.”
Joe grins instantly.
“Yeah.”
“And?”
Joe thinks for a second.
“Oh, she’s very honest.”
The hosts laugh knowingly.
“No seriously,” Joe says. “She’ll literally look at me and go ‘you can do better than that.’”
The translator repeats it while the male host bursts out laughing.
Joe smiles to himself.
“But when she really likes something, that’s probably the opinion I care about most.” He states, dumb, omg with his hands now as he looks down.
The women audibly “aw” again.
Joe points immediately across the table. “You guys keep doing that.”
One of them says something teasingly in Japanese.
The translator grins.
“She says you should bring her to the station next time.”
Joe smiles immediately at that.
Honestly the idea alone makes him feel lighter.
You sitting beside him here.
Probably laughing at his answers.
Playing with his rings while the interview happens.
He wonders briefly what you’re doing right now.
If you’ve eaten something.
If you’re reading one of yours books you bought the day before.
If you found—
Joe’s thoughts stop abruptly.
The pharmacy bag.
His stomach flips slightly.
No.
No text from you yet.
Which probably means you didn’t see it.
Or maybe you did and just—
“Joe?”
He blinks quickly back into the room.
“Sorry.”
The hosts laugh lightly.
The translator smiles knowingly. “Thinking about your girlfriend again?”
Joe drops his head back dramatically while the studio erupts again.
“This interview has turned into public humiliation.”
The male host grins while saying something final into the microphone.
The translator laughs softly.
“He says thank you for being so open today.”
Joe smiles properly then.
“Thank you for having me.” He presses his hands together in gratitude.
The interview wraps shortly after that.
Headphones come off.
People move around the studio again.
One of the women comes over to shake his hand goodbye while the translator stands beside her, as they take a picture.
Then before he can stop himself, he’s already pulling his phone back out again while walking toward the hallway.
Still no text from you.
Joe stares at the screen for a second.
Then types quickly.

no WARNINGS (maybe light topics of child abandonment) + fluff enjoy!
The streets are quieter by the time you and Joe begin wandering back.
Most of the crowds have faded into restaurants and bars now, the bright rush of the city softened into warm lights and distant conversation.
You’re walking side by side, holding two warm drinks in one hand while Joe carries a little paper tray of snacks in the other.
Every now and then he bumps his shoulder lightly against yours for no reason.
“You’re stealing my drink by the way,” you tell him as he leans over for another sip.
“It’s our drink now.”
“You bought your own.”
“Yours is better.” He mumbles, as he looks over to his drink, untouched.
You roll your eyes, but let him steal another sip anyway.
Then suddenly, a sharp cry cuts through the street.
You both look up immediately.
A tiny little girl is standing near the edge of the sidewalk by herself, tears streaming down her face, yelling something frantically in Japanese.
She can’t be older than maybe three or four.
Your entire expression changes instantly.
“Oh my gosh.”
Before Joe can even react properly, you’re already hurrying toward her.
“Baby,hey, hey.”
Joe follows right behind you, nearly dropping the food from trying to keep up.
The little girl looks terrified, turning in circles like she’s searching for someone.
You crouch down quickly in front of her.
“Hi sweet girl,” you say softly, immediately trying to calm her. “Hey, don’t cry baby, it’s okay.”
The toddler just keeps crying harder, words tumbling out rapidly in Japanese between little gasping breaths.
You glance up at Joe immediately.
“Joe.”
He looks mildly panicked already. “Yeah?”
“What is she saying?”
“I don’t know!”
“You know more Japanese than me!”
“I know like six words!”
The little girl points desperately down the street, crying again.
Your face softens completely.
“Oh honey…”
You gently push some hair away from her face instinctively.
“It’s okay, we’ll help you.”
Joe’s standing there looking completely helpless, now holding your drinks and snacks while you somehow already look like a concerned mother.
He watches you rub small circles against the little girl’s back while trying to soothe her.
“Okay,” you say quickly, looking back up at him. “Translate mom or dad.”
Joe blinks. “What?”
“Mom or dad!”
“In Japanese?”
“Yes Joe, preferably!”
“I don’t know how to say dad!”
“How do you not know how to say dad?”
“I don’t know, it’s never come up!”
The toddler cries louder.
You look back at her immediately. “No no no sweetheart, it’s okay—Joe do something useful.”
“I’m trying!”
He awkwardly crouches beside you now, still balancing everything in his hands.
Then carefully, painfully slowly, he points down the street, as he drops the food, grabbing his phone to open the translate app.
“Mama?” he attempts.
The little girl immediately looks up.
Joe lights up slightly. “Okay wait, okay that worked.”
“Good, keep going.”
He looks at you helplessly. “That’s all I know.”
You stare at him.
“You know one family member?”
“I didn’t think I’d need a full vocabulary!”
“Use Google translate or something.” You utter.
“Okay! Okay.” He fumbles.
The little girl suddenly grabs onto your arm tightly again, still sniffling.
Your entire face melts.
“Oh baby…”
Without thinking, you pull her gently closer, letting her cling to you while you look around the street worriedly.
Joe watches the whole thing quietly for a second.
The way you immediately comfort her.
The way your voice softens completely.
How protective you look without even thinking about it.
Something about it gets him a little.
Then you look up again, stressed. “Joe, what do we do?”
He finally snaps back into it.
“Okay okay,uh-we look for parents?”
“Yes obviously, but how?!”
“I don’t know!”
You both look around frantically for a second.
People pass by, conversations blending together around you, but nobody seems to notice the tiny crying toddler clinging to your arm.
She sniffles hard again, little fists balled into your sleeve while her stuffed teddy hangs from one hand.
Your heart actually aches a little.
“Oh angel…” you murmur softly.
Then suddenly her eyes land on your drink.
She stares at it.
Then points.
You blink. “Oh.”
“She wants your drink?” Joe asks.
Before you can answer, the little girl makes a tiny grabbing motion toward it, still sniffling.
You glance down at your cup.
Almost empty.
Then over at Joe’s.
His is untouched.
You immediately reach over and take it from his hand.
Joe looks genuinely offended. “Hey.”
“She’s thirsty.”
“That was mine.”
“She’s a baby, Joe.”
He watches as you crouch back down slightly, carefully holding the drink toward her.
The little girl looks at you for half a second like she doesn’t fully trust it yet.
Then takes it with both tiny hands immediately.
Joe sighs dramatically beside you. “Unbelievable.”
You ignore him.
“There you go baby,” you say softly, pushing her bangs out of her face again as she takes a careful sip.
The crying quiets almost instantly.
Joe stares down at her in betrayal. “Wow. So she gets the fresh one and I get nothing.”
You glance up at him. “You’re a grown man.”
“She stole my drink.”
“She’s been through enough.”
The toddler takes another sip while still clutching your sleeve tightly with her other hand.
Joe looks down at her little teddy now. It’s worn down, one ear slightly bent.
He can’t help but feel bad.
The little girl suddenly presses herself closer against you again when a louder sound echoes from farther down the street.
“Oh baby…” you soothe softly, rubbing her back.
She’s fully attached to you now, with one tiny hand gripping her teddy.
The other tangled into your sleeve like letting go would kill her.
Joe watches the whole thing with this weirdly emotional expression now.
Because you look so natural doing it.
Crouched there comforting her, talking softly, holding her drink while she sips from it between little shaky breaths.
Like you’ve done this before.
Your hair falls forward slightly as you lean closer to her.
Joe feels something warm hit his chest so suddenly it almost annoys him.
Then you glance up at him again, stressed.
“She might be hungry too.”
Joe immediately looks at the snacks in his hands.
Then back at the toddler.
Then back at the snacks.
He then immediately pulls out one of the warm snacks from the paper tray and holds it out slightly.
The little girl stares at him suspiciously, reaching for it.
Joe’s face lights up slightly when she takes it. “Okay wait, she likes me now.”
She takes a tiny bite while still glued to your side.
Joe watches her for another second before looking at you again.
Joe watches quietly while the little girl eats tiny pieces of the food, still pressed tightly against your side.
You don’t even seem to notice the way you’re comforting her anymore.
It’s instinctive now.
One hand rubbing slowly against her back, your voice soft every time she starts looking overwhelmed again.
“Good job,” you murmur gently as she takes another bite. “There you go baby.”
The little girl looks up at you immediately.
Completely trusting.
Joe feels something shift painfully in his chest. And suddenly, completely against his will, his brain betrays him.
He imagines this exact scene years from now.
You crouched down comforting your own little girl.
A tiny kid with your eyes clinging to your sleeve while you soothe them exactly like this.
You carrying snacks around because “what if they get hungry.”
You sitting beside a little bed late at night speaking softly like you are now.
The image hits him so fast he almost physically recoils from it.
Not because it’s bad.
Because it’s too good.
Because some stupid part of him instantly thinks…
Oh.
I’d want that.
With her.
Joe blinks hard, dragging himself back into reality while you keep softly talking to the little girl.
Terrible timing.
Absolutely horrible timing to be internally imagining domestic life while there’s literally a missing child attached to your girlfriend.
But he can’t help it.
Especially when you glance up at him again with genuine worry all over your face.
“She’s still shaking.” You whisper softly.
Joe just stares at you for a second.
God.
Then he clears his throat quickly, trying to act normal.
“She’s okay,” he says gently. “You’re helping.”
You look back down at the toddler immediately.
Joe watches the interaction quietly.
And unfortunately the thought comes back even worse this time.
You’d be such a good mom.
Then you look over suddenly.
Joe immediately straightens slightly like he’s been caught doing something illegal.
“What?” you ask suspiciously.
“Nothing.”
The toddler looks between both of you now while holding the pastry.
Joe points at her quickly. “Focus on the child.”
You narrow your eyes slightly but don’t push it.
Still, you smile a little to yourself before looking back down at the girl.
Joe watches you again almost immediately.
Helpless, honestly.
A few more minutes pass with the little girl practically attached to you.
She’s calmer now, small hiccupy sniffles replacing the full crying, but she still refuses to let go of your sleeve.
Every time someone walks past too quickly, she presses closer again.
Joe’s crouched beside you now too, quietly holding the empty drink cup she demolished like he’s accepted his role in this situation.
Then finally a woman appears farther down the street.
Walking quickly, but not panicked.
More irritated than worried honestly.
The little girl notices immediately though.
Her tiny grip tightens around you.
The woman approaches, speaking quickly in Japanese the second she reaches you all.
You blink immediately, looking at Joe.
Joe blinks back. “Don’t look at me.”
The woman sighs dramatically at the little girl before switching into slightly broken English.
“She ran away again,” she says casually.
Again.
You pause.
“Oh…”
You glance down at the toddler still glued to your side.
The little girl immediately buries herself closer into you the second her mother reaches for her hand.
Your expression shifts slightly.
The mother laughs lightly like this is normal. “Always wandering.”
Joe notices your face immediately.
You look concerned.
Trying not to look concerned, but still, definitely concerned.
The little girl still won’t let go of you.
One tiny fist holding her teddy.
The other wrapped tightly around your sleeve.
“Baby,” you say softly to her, “that’s your mama.”
The girl shakes her head slightly against you, lower lip wobbling again.
Joe’s eyebrows lift immediately.
Okay.
That feels a little sad.
The mother doesn’t seem angry exactly, just exhausted, already trying to gently pull her daughter away.
“She always does this.” She says with another tired laugh.
You glance at Joe quickly.
He catches it immediately.
That tiny silent look between you both.
The one where neither of you says anything out loud but you’re thinking the exact same thing.
The little girl starts whining softly again when her mother tries to pull her back fully.
Your whole face melts instantly.
“Oh sweetheart…”
Without thinking, you crouch a little lower, brushing hair carefully away from her face again.
“You gotta go with mama, okay?”
The little girl just stares at you with watery eyes.
Joe feels his chest ache a little watching it.
Especially because you look genuinely emotional about leaving this random toddler you met ten minutes ago.
The mother says something else in Japanese, reaching for the little girl again.
This time she lets herself be picked up, but still stretches one little hand toward you while clutching the teddy.
You smile softly despite yourself, touching her tiny hand once.
“Bye sweet girl.”
The toddler looks devastated about it.
Joe actually has to look away for a second because somehow it’s upsetting him too now.
The mother nods politely toward both of you.
“Thank you.”
“Of course.”You say quickly.
Then they start walking away.
The little girl keeps looking back over her mother’s shoulder the entire time.
Still clutching the pastry Joe gave her.
You stand there watching until they disappear down the street.
Then silence.
Joe looks over at you.
You still look sad.
“You okay baby?” he asks softly.
You exhale slowly. “I don’t know.”
“You got attached huh.”
“She was just so little.”
Joe steps a little closer.
“She really liked you.”
You look down at the ground for a second before quietly mumbling,
“I just don’t get how someone could leave their baby alone like that.”
Joe’s expression softens immediately.
Without saying anything, he reaches over and gently pulls you against his side.
Your head rests against his shoulder automatically.
And for a second neither of you move.
Just standing there in the quiet street together while the city glows softly around you.
You both start walking again slowly after that.
somehow.
You keep glancing back over your shoulder even though the mother and little girl disappeared minutes ago.
Joe notices immediately.
Your hand is still tucked into his, but your grip feels different now.
You sniff softly once, trying to play it off.
Joe looks over. "Baby...”
You shake your head quickly. “I’m fine.”
“Mhm.”
“I am.”
He watches you for another second.
Your eyes are a little glassy again.
You’ve been emotional the entire trip.
Softer than usual.
Tearing up at random things.
Getting weirdly attached to moments.
Holding onto him more.
And Joe’s noticed every single bit of it.
Right now though, he just thinks you’re tired.
Or overwhelmed.
Or maybe just emotional from travelling.
Still, the way you looked at that little girl did something to him.
You glance back down the street one last time.
“She looked so scared,” you mumble quietly.
Joe’s expression softens immediately.
“I know.”
“And she was so little.”
“I know, baby.”
Your throat tightens a little unexpectedly.
You hate that you feel close to crying over this.
It’s embarrassing honestly.
Joe slows down slightly beside you, gently tugging your hand until you’re closer to him.
“C’mere.”
Before you can protest, his arm slides around your shoulders, pulling you into his side while you walk.
You let yourself lean into him instantly.
Your cheek presses against his shoulder.
Joe presses a soft kiss into your hair without thinking.
“Baby, come on,” he murmurs gently. “She’s okay.”
You nod slightly, but your chest still feels weirdly heavy.
“She just held onto me so tight.”
Joe smiles faintly at that.
You sigh softly, still leaning into Joe as you walk.
The night air feels cooler now, your fingers tucked tightly between his.
For a second neither of you say anything.
Your mind keeps drifting back to the little girl.
The way she held onto you.
How scared she looked.
And annoyingly, your eyes sting again.
Oh my God.
What is wrong with you lately?
You’ve been emotional this entire trip.
Actually ridiculous levels of emotional.
You nearly cried over Joe bringing you breakfast.
You got emotional in the bookstore.
You almost teared up watching an old couple earlier crossing the street holding hands.
And now this.
A random toddler in Tokyo somehow nearly has you crying again.
You press your lips together hard, trying to stop it before Joe notices.
Unfortunately, Joe notices everything.
You groan softly, hiding your face against his shoulder for a second out of embarrassment.
“This is actually getting concerning.”
Joe laughs quietly. “What is?”
“I don’t know why I’m emotional about everything.”
“You’ve always been emotional.”
“Not like this.”
Joe smiles slightly to himself.
Honestly, he’s found it kind of adorable all trip.
The way you keep softening over tiny things.
The clinginess.
The random affection.
How much more you’ve wanted him near you lately.
Not that he’s complaining.
At all.
Still, you shake your head slightly against him.
“Seriously though,” you mumble. “I’ve cried like six times this week.”
“You cried because I bought you pastries.”
“They were such thoughtful pastries though.”
Joe laughs properly at that.
“And flowers.”
“They were beautiful.”
“You cried over flowers.”
“I was overwhelmed!”
Joe’s shoulders shake slightly with quiet laughter while he pulls you a little closer into his side.
“You’re cute.” Joe looks down at you fondly as you continue aimlessly walking around.

You barely remember getting in the night before.
Everything had been a blur as you found your rental place way too late to function properly. At some point you and Joe both just laughed, agreed you’d deal with everything in the morning, showered quickly, and collapsed into bed without even unpacking.
Morning comes slowly.
There’s soft light coming through the curtains.
You’re still half asleep, wrapped up in the comforter, nuzzled in Joe’s side when you feel movement close next to you.
Joe is awake first, quieter than usual, like he doesn’t want to disturb anything.
For a second he just stays there, looking at you.
You’re still asleep, face relaxed, hair a little messy from the flight and the night before.
He smiles to himself, then he shifts closer.
Not enough to wake you, just enough that his arm rests loosely around you, pulling you slightly closer towards him.
You make a small sound in your sleep, but don’t wake up.
Just lean into him more.
Joe lets out a quiet breath, settling properly now, his hand resting lightly against your arm.
After a moment, his fingers start tracing small patterns against your skin.
You react without really waking up, a small smile pulling at your face as you shift closer into him.
Joe notices immediately.
“Hi…” he murmurs, even though you’re still asleep.
You don’t answer, just stay there, breathing slow and steady.
He watches you for another second, then relaxes fully, letting his head rest back against the pillow.
Outside, the city is already starting to wake up, as you begin to hear cars on the road.
Joe glances at you again, that same soft expression from yesterday creeping back in.
You shift slightly against him, still half asleep, face tucked into the pillow.
A small frown pulls at your brows.
“Joe.” you mumble.
He’s already awake, immediately looking at you. “Yeah?”
“What time is it…”
Your voice is rough with sleep, barely there.
Joe reaches over to his phone on the bedside table, squinting slightly at the brightness.
“It’s like… six ish.”
You groan softly, dragging the comforter up a little. “Why am I awake.”
“Jet lag,” he says quietly.
“Make it stop.”
He smiles a little, setting his phone back down before shifting closer again.
“Go back to sleep.” He utters moving his hand through your hair gently and out of your face.
You don’t move.
Just lie there for a second, then mumble, “I’m hungry.”
Joe lets out a quiet laugh. “Of course you are.”
You turn your head slightly toward him, eyes still closed. “I didn’t eat properly on the plane.”
“That’s because you didn’t like the food.”
“It was bad.”
“I gave you mine.”
“I know, thank you baby.”
He softens at that.
“Okay,” he murmurs, moving a little closer behind you.
You feel him press in gently, warm against your back.
Then softer, distracted, his lips brush lightly against your shoulder.
You exhale quietly, the tension leaving your body a little.
“Joe…”
“Hm?”
“I’m too tired to get up.”
“Then don’t.”
“But I’m hungry.”
He smiles against your skin, barely there.
“You’re complicated.”
You hum in response with a tired smile, eyes still closed.
You’re already drifting again.
He slips out of bed carefully, slow enough not to wake you, grabbing the first hoodie he finds at the top of his case and his shoes. Quickly going to the bathroom to brush his teeth. He pauses for a second when coming back out before leaving, glancing back at you.
You’re still curled up exactly how he left you.
He smiles a little, then heads out.
The morning air is cool and quiet.
Everything feels calm, the streets not fully busy yet, shops just opening.
Joe walks with his hands tucked into his sleeves, still waking up properly himself.
He finds a nearby 7/11 after a few minutes, the bright lights cutting through the quiet street.
Inside, he slows down immediately.
There’s way more than he expected.
Shelves packed with things he doesn’t fully recognise, packaging in Japanese, rows of snacks, drinks, little meals with cute cartoons on the labels.
He just stands there for a second, clearly overwhelmed by the choices.
Then he starts picking things up.
Anything that looks good.
He furrows his brows in attempt to read the labels.
Landing on some pastries (of course), fruit, something that looks sweeter, even if he’s not entirely sure.
He pauses at the drinks section, scanning for something familiar.
Coffee.
He grabs two.
One he thinks you’ll like.
He keeps going, adding a few more things just in case, like he’s building options.
At the counter, the cashier greets him softly.
Joe smiles, nodding a little, trying out a quiet “thank you” in slightly awkward pronunciation when he pays, unsure to test his Japanese out yet or stick to English.
By the time he steps back outside, he’s holding a small bag filled with way more than necessary before making his way back to the rental.
He begins to slow down slightly.
The streets feel different in daylight.
He passes a small stand on the corner, flowers laid out neatly in simple wrapping.
Joe pauses.
Looks for a second.
Then, without overthinking it, he steps closer.
He picks out a small bunch, nothing too big, just something soft and simple.
Something that felt like you.
A few minutes later, he’s back at the door.
He unlocks it quietly, stepping inside as softly as he can.
The place is still quiet.
You’re still asleep, now taking up most of the bed.
Joe sets the bag down carefully, placing the flowers beside it.
Then he walks back over to you, sitting down gently on the edge where you’ve now kicked off the comforter.
He looks at you for a second.
Still peaceful, still half buried in the pillow.
“Baby,” he murmurs softly, brushing the same piece of hair that’s always in your face away.
You stir slightly, not fully awake yet.
“Got you something.” He adds.
You blink up at him, still half asleep. “Mmph, Joe.”
“Hey baby, you said you were hungry.” Joe smiles a little looking down at you.
You frown slightly, trying to catch up. “Mhm…”
He nods toward the side. “Go look.”
You push yourself up a little, eyes still heavy, rubbing them before you glance over.
There’s a small bag on the table.
And flowers?
You pause.
“Baby?” You utter.
He shrugs a little, suddenly looking weirdly shy. “Just stuff. From down the street.”
You sit up properly now, reaching for the bag.
Inside is quite literally a bit of everything.
Little pastries, drinks, things you don’t even recognise but somehow look good anyway.
You look back at him, a bit stunned. “You went out?”
“Mhm.”
“When?”
“Just now.”
“You didn’t even wake me.”
“You were asleep,” he says simply. “And you said you were hungry.”
Something about that hits you a little harder than expected.
You look back down at everything again.
He didn’t just grab one thing.
He got options.
Things you might like.
Things you didn’t even know you’d want yet.
You pick up one of the pastries, then glance at the flowers again.
“And you got me flowers too?”
Joe rubs the back of his neck slightly. “Yeah. They reminded me of you when I saw them.”
You look at him properly now.
His hair is a complete mess, sticking up in every direction like he hasn’t even tried to fix it. His glasses are on, a little crooked from where he must’ve pushed them up half asleep. There’s something soft about him like this, hoodie slightly rumpled, still filled with sleep.
You blink for a second.
“You went out… in a place you don’t even know just to get me breakfast, and flowers.” You try to process.
He shrugs again, softer this time. “It’s not a big deal.”
“It is.”
Your voice comes out a little smaller than you meant.
Joe’s expression shifts immediately.
“Hey,” he says gently. “What’s wrong baby?”
You shake your head slightly, smiling but your eyes a little glassy now.
“That’s just really sweet of you.” You smile back.
He leans a little closer, confused but soft. “Why are you getting emotional?”
“Because…” you laugh quietly, wiping at your eye before anything actually falls. “You’re just really thoughtful.”
Joe’s face softens completely at that.
“Of course I am,” he murmurs. “It’s you.”
That does it.
You let out a small breath, shaking your head again like you’re trying to play it off, but you can’t stop smiling.
“Come here,” you say softly.
He doesn’t hesitate.
Moves closer instantly.
You lean into him, arms wrapping around him loosely, still holding onto that feeling.
Joe’s hands settle around you just as easily.
“You’re happy?” he asks quietly.
You nod against him. “Yeah, super.”
“Good.”
He presses a soft kiss against your hair, lingering there for a second before you bring him closer to sit with you.
You now sit cross legged on the bed, the little bag of food spread out in front of you, still smiling to yourself like you haven’t fully processed it yet.
Joe’s leaning back against the headboard, watching you more than anything else.
“Eat before it gets cold,” he says, nodding toward the food.
“I will,” you mumble, still looking through everything.
You pick something, unwrap it, take a small bite.
Your face softens immediately.
Joe notices. “Good?”
“Mhm.”
“Okay, good.”
You take another bite, then pause, glancing over at him.
He hasn’t touched anything.
He’s just sitting there, looking at you like that’s enough.
“You’re not eating,” you say.
“I will.”
“When?” You mumble, mouth full of sweetness.
“In a minute.”
You narrow your eyes slightly, then shift closer without saying anything.
Joe watches you, confused for half a second.
Then you hold the pastry up toward him.
“Open.”
He blinks. “What?”
“Just open baby.”
He lets out a small laugh but leans forward anyway, taking a bite from what you’re holding.
You watch his reaction this time.
“Oh wow yeah, that’s good,” he admits.
“Told you.”
He smiles a little, but you don’t pull your hand away.
You just hold it there again.
Joe looks at you for a second, then leans in for another bite, softer this time, eyes still on you.
“You’re making me eat now?” he says quietly.
“Yep.” You nod, proud of yourself.
“Bossy.”
“Eat.”
He laughs under his breath, but does it anyway.
After a second, his hand comes up, gently wrapping around your wrist, not stopping you, just holding it there while he takes another bite.
Then he reaches for something else from the bag.
“Your turn,” he says, holding it out toward you.
You lean forward, taking a bite from his hand this time.
You both smile a little at the same time.
It turns into that without either of you saying it.
Just passing things back and forth.
Feeding each other like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
—
You both end up getting ready way slower than planned.
Thinking showering together would be more time efficient…
It made sense in theory.
It does not work in practice.
What should’ve taken ten minutes turns into way longer, mostly because you’re both acting like love drunk teenagers, distracted, laughing at nothing, forgetting what you even went in there for.
By the time you’re actually dressed, it feels like you’ve already spent half the morning just being around each other.
You’re sat on the floor in front of the mirror, finally doing your makeup, hair still a little damp as the ends begin to curl up, the room quiet except for soft noise from outside.
Joe’s somewhere behind you at first.
You can hear him moving around, opening drawers, probably looking for something he already unpacked.
Then he walks past you.
You catch his reflection for a second before he leans down, pressing a quick kiss to the top of your head like it’s automatic.
You pause mid step.
“Hi,” you utter.
“Hi.”
He keeps walking like nothing happened.
You smile to yourself and go back to what you were doing.
A few minutes later, he passes again.
This time slower.
He stops just behind you, hands resting lightly on the back of your neck while you try to focus on your eyeliner.
“Joe.”
“What?”
“I’m doing my makeup.”
“I know.”
“You’re distracting.”
“I’m not even doing anything baby.”
You glance at him through the mirror.
He’s already smiling.
Then he leans in again, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek this time before letting go.
You try to stay focused.
You really do.
But he does it again.
And again.
Every time he walks past, it’s something.
A kiss to your head.
Your cheek.
Your shoulder if you’re turned slightly.
Like he physically can’t just walk by you without stopping.
“Can you relax for like two minutes,” you laugh quietly, now stood up.
“No.”
“Why?”
He shrugs, coming up behind you again, arms sliding loosely around your waist.
“Because look at you baby!” He exclaims.
You shake your head, smiling despite yourself.
He rests his chin lightly against your shoulder, both of you looking at your reflection now.
“You almost done?”
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
“Now I’m hungry.”
You just chuckle in response as you put your makeup back in your toiletry bag, finishing up.
Joe straightens slightly, watching you.
You hum, grabbing your handbag and phone.
He reaches for your hand without thinking, giving it a small squeeze.
“C’mon then.”
—
Brunch is the first proper stop of the day.
Joe leads you down a quieter street, away from the main rush, until you reach this small place tucked between two shops. It’s not flashy or anything, but cozy.
“This one,” he says, like he’s been waiting to show you.
You smile as you walk in.
It smells like coffee and something sweet, low music playing in the background. You get seated by the window, sunlight hitting the table just right.
You sink into your seat, still a little sleepy.
Joe’s already looking at the menu, but he keeps glancing up at you.
“What?” you mumble, reaching for the menu.
“Nothing.” He smirks innocently.
You roll your eyes, but you’re smiling.
You both order, Joe letting you go first, then adding something else “just in case you want to try it.”
When the food comes, it’s one of those moments where everything just feels easy.
You take a bite, immediately softening. “Ooo yum! Baby try this.” You move the chopsticks to Joe’s mouth as he hums taking a bite.
Joe smiles like he’s been waiting for that reaction. “Good choice gorgeous.”
You blush.
At some point your foot brushes his under the table.
He doesn’t move it away.
Just leaves it there, resting against yours like it belongs there.
You reach for your drink and Joe’s hand comes up automatically to move your hair out of your face so it doesn’t fall forward.
You pause for a second.
“Thank you baby.”
He shrugs lightly.
It’s so casual, but it sits with you.
A little later, you lean back slightly, watching him now instead.
He’s talking about something, probably the plan for the day, but you’re not really listening.
You’re just looking at him.
The way his glasses, which he usually never ends up wearing, sit on his nose, how his hair still hasn’t been fixed properly, the way he gestures with his hands when he talks, clearly so passionate in the topic and how his eyes grow with every expression.
Like a puppy.
“And then after that we could—”
You don’t even realise you’ve been staring until he stops.
“What?” he asks.
“Ugh I just wanna bite you.” You move your hand up to his cheek, giving it a squeeze.
Joe groans immediately, dropping his head a little. “Not this again.”
“I’m serious.” You smile in awe.
“You say that like every five minutes.”
“Because you keep doing cute little things.”
He looks back up at you, trying not to smile and failing.
Just look at him for a second, something warm settling in your chest.
Your hand reaches across the table without really thinking, fingers brushing his.
Joe looks down, then back up at you, and laces his fingers with yours loosely.
You stay like that while you eat, talking about nothing important, sharing bits of food without asking.
Letting the late morning stretch out a little longer than it needs to.
At one point he slides his plate slightly toward you. “Try this.”
You take a bite straight from his fork.
“Mhm… okay wait, that’s better than mine.”
He smiles. “Told you.”
“Don’t get cocky.” You nudge his foot under the table.
He nudges back.
—
Time passes by.
You don’t even make it out of your seats before it starts.
You reach for the bill the second it’s placed down.
Joe reaches at the exact same time.
Your hands knock into each other.
“Mine,” you say immediately.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
You narrow your eyes at him. “I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
“You paid for everything yesterday.” You utter, frustrated.
“And I’ll pay today.”
“That’s not how it works.”
“It is now.”
You try to grab it again and he just moves it out of reach like it’s nothing.
“Joe.”
“What?”
“Give it.”
“No.”
“Stop being mean.”
“I’m not being mean.”
“I want to pay.” You frown with a sigh.
“And I want to pay.”
You stare at him.
He stares right back completely unbothered.
Then he just hands his card over to the waiter like the conversation is already over.
“Joe.”
“It’s done.”
“You’re so—”
“Sweet?” he interrupts, smiling.
“Controlling.”
“That too.”
You try to stay annoyed for about three seconds.
Then you laugh under your breath, shaking your head.
“You always win.”
“I don’t always win.”
“You literally always win.”
He stands up, grabbing his things. “C’mon.”
Outside, the air feels brighter, busier now.
With people moving around, signs everywhere, bits of conversation in a language you’re still getting used to hearing around you.
Joe steps out beside you, adjusting his tote bag slightly that you had bought for him somewhere in South America.
You fall into step next to him.
After a minute, he slows down slightly, pulling his phone out.
“Okay,” he says, already opening his notes.
“There it is,” you smile. “The itinerary.”
“It’s a good itinerary.”
“I’m sure it is.”
He scrolls a little, focused.
“So,” he starts, “there’s a place like five minutes from here. It’s a bookstore, but it’s kind of hidden, like you have to go up this side street to find it.”
You’re not even pretending to look at the phone.
You’re just watching him.
“And I thought you’d like it because it’s quiet and it has those kind of—”
He pauses.
Looks up.
“Baby you’re doing it again.”
“What?”
“Staring.”
“I’m listening.”
“You’re not listening.”
“I am.” You laugh.
“What did I just say?”
“Hidden bookstore, five minutes away.”
He studies you for a second.
You smile a little.
“You’re so cute when you do this.”
“Do what.”
“Plan everything.”
He shakes his head slightly, but he’s smiling.
“I just wanted it to be nice.”
“It is nice.”
“We haven’t even gone yet.”
“I know,” you say softly, looking at him. “But it already is.”
He glances at you again, softer this time.
Then tucks his phone away, giving your hand a small tug forward.
You follow him down a quieter street, the noise of the main road fading behind you.
Joe looks up spotting the sign.
“There,” he says softly.
You follow his gaze.
The bookstore is small, tucked between two buildings, warm light with that vintage feel.
You don’t even try to hide your reaction. “Wow.”
“What?”
“This is so me.”
He smiles, a little proud but trying not to show it too much. “Yeah?”
“You knew I’d like this.”
“Mhm.”
You look at him properly for a second with a smile. “You’re such a dork.”
“In a good way?”
“In a really good way.”
He laughs quietly, reaching for your hand again as you walk in.
You drift almost immediately, fingers trailing along the spines of books, pausing every few seconds to pick something up.
Joe doesn’t rush you.
He just stays close, one hand loosely in yours until you slip away to another shelf.
At one point you’re standing on your toes slightly, trying to reach something higher up.
Before you can fully stretch, Joe steps in behind you, one hand on your waist to steady you.
“Wait,” he murmurs.
His hand comes up, reaching past you to grab the book easily.
But instead of pulling away straight away, he stays there for a second, close behind you.
You pause.
“Thank you baby.” you say quietly.
He hands it to you, but his hand lingers at your waist just a second longer before dropping, and pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
You don’t move away either.
At one point you stop suddenly, pulling out a book with a small smile.
“Oh my God.”
Joe looks over. “What?”
You flip through it quickly, already a little excited.
“Kate would love this.” You utter in deep thought, reading the blurb, mentioning his sister.
He stills slightly.
You don’t notice.
You’re already scanning the shelf again.
“And this one for Emma,” you add, pulling another out, comparing them.
Joe just stands there for a second, watching you.
You’re completely in your own world now, holding both books, deciding between them like it matters.
“She loves this author,” you mumble, more to yourself than anything.
You finally glance up.
He’s looking at you.
Soft.
“What?” you ask.
He shakes his head lightly, a small smile still there.
“Nothing.”
“Huh?” You utter.
He huffs a quiet laugh, stepping a little closer.
“It’s just you’re already picking stuff for them.”
You glance down at the books again.
“Oh.”
It hadn’t even felt like anything.
You shrug slightly. “I saw them and thought of them.”
He nods slowly, still watching you.
His hand comes up, resting lightly at your waist without thinking.
You don’t move away.
“They’ll love that,” he says quietly.
You smile a little, looking back at the shelf.
“You think so.”
There’s a small pause.
Then Joe leans slightly past you, reaching for another book higher up.
“What about this one?”
You look over.
Your face lights up immediately. “Oh wait, yeah.”
He hands it to you.
You take it, brushing his hand for a second as you do.
“Good pick baby.” You say.
“Thank you.”
A little later, you’re both crouched near a lower shelf, flipping through something together.
Your shoulders are brushing, knees almost touching.
You lean slightly into him without even thinking.
Joe notices.
Of course he does.
He tilts his head a little toward yours. “You comfy?”
“Mhm.”
“Good.” He mutters, pushing your hair out of your face again.
Then, near the counter.
A woman around your age steps up hesitantly, holding a book like shes pretending that’s why he came over.
“Hey, sorry,” she says, a bit awkward. “I don’t want to be weird or anything.”
Joe straightens slightly, still relaxed. “You’re good.”
The woman glances between both of you.
“I just… I recognised you,” she says to Joe, then looks at you. “Both of you, actually.”
You smile a little. “Hi.”
She exhales like she’s relieved you’re nice. “Hi. Sorry, I just didn’t want to interrupt or anything.”
“You’re not interrupting,” Joe says.
She nods, then gestures slightly with the book in her hand. “I actually came over because I saw you helping her earlier.”
You blink. “Oh.”
“Like when you grabbed that book for her,” she tried to explain, stopping to think of the correct wording. “It was just… I don’t know. It was really nice.”
Joe looks a little caught off guard by that.
“Ah it’s nothing,” he smiled.
“It’s not nothing,” the woman shakes her head, smiling. “You don’t really see that much anymore.”
There’s a small pause.
Then she adds, “You guys look really happy.”
You glance at Joe, he glances at you.
It’s quiet for half a second.
You smile up at the lady. “That’s very kind thank you!”
She smiles back, nodding like that’s all she needed to hear.
“Anyway, sorry,” she says quickly. “I’ll leave you alone. Just wanted to say that.”
“Thats very lovely of you, thank you again.” You look back.
“Yeah, thank you,” Joe adds.
She walks off, leaving you both standing there.
You turn back to Joe slowly.
“That was so sweet.”
“Yeah,” he says, still a little thoughtful.
You step a little closer to him.
“So you’re just out here being boyfriend of the year without even realising huh.”
He huffs a quiet laugh. “Oh okay sure.”
“I’m serious.”
“You’re the one who can’t reach shelves baby.”
“Don’t start.”
He smiles, but it softens quickly.
His hand finds yours again for the millionth time, fingers lacing through yours, a little tighter this time.
“You ready?” he asks quietly.
“Yeah.”
You both head toward the counter together.
Joe lets go of your hand just long enough to pay, as you pull the books you’re buying for his sisters to your side, insisting on paying for them yourself, he finally agrees, then reaches for the bag straight after like it’s instinct.
As you step back out onto the street, the noise comes back, the world picking up again.
But his hand stays in yours.
And his thumb keeps brushing lightly against your knuckles as you walk.
Like he’s still thinking about what that girl said.
And doesn’t really want to let you go.
Erm wtf 300…
THANK YOU!!!!!

ty for all the love on my last posts <3
enjoy!
You’re standing with your suitcase by the check in line, Joe’s standing beside you, half paying attention to the check in screens, half to whatever he’s doing on his phone. He’s wearing one of his favourite worn in hats, the one he always reaches for when he doesn’t feel like doing his hair, to which is now turning darker and darker as they days go on, silver rimmed glasses slipping slightly down his nose every few minutes with his clean shaven face.
The jumper he has on makes you smile without meaning to.
You made it for him years ago, for his birthday, slightly uneven in places if you really look at it, but he wears it like it’s the best thing he owns. Soft, oversized, sleeves pushed up just enough to show his hands.
He tugs at the cuff absentmindedly while he scrolls, completely unaware you’re staring.
You glance over. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s not a nothing face.”
He looks up immediately, a little guilty, then turns his phone toward you.
It’s a notes app.
An entire list with times, places, train routes and food spots with little stars next to some of them.
You blink. “Joe.”
“What?”
“You made an itinerary?”
“It’s not like a strict itinerary,” he says quickly. “It’s more like some options for the days we’re there.”
You scroll slightly.
Day one, Shibuya, coffee place he’s saved. A vintage store. Something circled twice. Then a note about a record shop.
Day two, temples, somewhere for breakfast, something about a park.
You look back at him slowly.
“You’ve been planning this.” You utter, moving yiur hand up to the nape of his neck and running your hands through the ends of his hair that’s poking through his hat.
He shrugs, trying to act casual with a small smile. “I got excited.”
“Baby, you’re going for work.”
“I know, but you’re coming.” He says it like that explains everything. “So I wanted it to be good.”
Your chest does that thing, where it just goes all warm and fuzzy.
You keep looking at the list.
There are tiny comments next to some of them.
“Looks like something you’d like.”
“Good for photos.”
“Quiet spot.”
You don’t even realise you’re just staring at him now until he shifts slightly.
“What?” he asks, a small smile creeping in.
“You’re so cute baby.”
Joe immediately looks away, shaking his head a little. “Don’t do that.”
“I’m serious.”
“It’s just a list.”
“It’s not just a list, you planned a whole trip.”
“For us,” he says, quieter now.
You step a little closer to him without thinking, your shoulder brushing his arm.
“I love that you get excited about stuff like this.”
He glances at you again, softer this time. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
For a second neither of you say anything.
Then he nudges you lightly. “Wait till you see day three.”
“There’s more?”
“Obviously.”
You laugh under your breath.
—
By the time you’re through security and at the gate, everything slows down a bit.
You end up by one of the big windows, planes moving slowly outside, everything a little calmer now.
Joe drops into the seat beside you, stretching his legs out exhaling.
You sit down next to him, a little quieter now that you’ve stopped moving.
The tired hits you properly.
Without really thinking about it, you lean your head against his shoulder.
Joe stills for a second, then relaxes into it, tilting his head slightly toward yours.
“Hey,” he murmurs softly. “You good?”
“Mhm.”
A few seconds pass.
Then, quieter, “You hungry, baby?”
You don’t even lift your head. “Hm?”
Joe takes that as a yes immediately.
“Okay,” he says, already shifting slightly. “Stay here, I’ll grab something.”
You barely react, just hum again as he gently slips out from under you.
“I’ll be two minutes,” he adds.
“Mhm.”
A few minutes later, you’re still sitting there, head tipped back against the seat now, eyes half closed.
The airport noise fades into the background.
You don’t notice someone approaching until a soft voice cuts through.
“Hi! Sorry.”
You open your eyes, sitting up slightly.
A girl stands there, maybe around 13 years old, her older brother just behind her, both of them looking a little nervous.
“Hi,” you say, a small smile forming.
“I’m really sorry to bother you,” she starts quickly, “I just, I recognised you.”
You blink, a little surprised. “Oh, hi.”
She smiles, visibly relieved you’re nice. “Hi. I just wanted to say I love you guys. Like, genuinely.”
You laugh softly. “Thank you.”
Her brother smiles too, a little quieter but just as kind.
She glances around slightly. “Is he here?”
“Joe? He just went to get food,” you say with a tired smile.
She nods quickly. “Oh okay, no worries, I didn’t want to interrupt or anything.”
There’s a small pause, then she adds, “I just wanted to say his music actually helped me through a lot. Like, properly.”
The tone shifts just slightly.
You soften immediately.
“That means a lot,” you say gently. “He’d really appreciate that.”
She nods, smiling again, eyes a little glassy but happy. “Yeah. I just thought if I ever saw him, I’d say thank you.”
“I’ll tell him,” you promise, eyes going a little glassy too.
“Thank you.”
Her brother nudges her lightly. “Go on, ask.”
She laughs nervously. “Sorry again uh-could we maybe get a photo? Only if it’s okay.”
“Of course,” you say, standing up.
You take her phone, stepping back slightly.
“Okay, ready?”
They stand together, smiling.
You take a few pictures, just to be safe.
“Got it.”
She looks at the screen immediately, face lighting up. “Oh my God, thank you.”
“No problem.”
“And… you’re actually even prettier in real life,” she adds quickly, a little embarrassed.
You laugh softly. “Thank you, that’s really sweet.”
“Sorry, I’ll stop now,” she smiles. “Have a good flight.”
“You too.”
They walk off, still talking quietly between themselves.
A minute later, Joe comes back balancing two coffees and a small paper bag in between his teeth.
“There you are,” he mumbles through the bag of treats, dropping into the seat beside you again. “Miss me?” He utters properly as he sits the bag and coffees down.
You smile. “Mmm, a little.”
He hands you your drink without asking.
Exactly how you like it.
“And I got these,” he adds, opening the bag slightly to show your favourite pastries. A chocolate croissant and a savoury one.
You look at him. “How do you always get it right?”
“I pay attention,” he shrugs.
You lean back into him again, head returning to his shoulder like it belongs there.
Joe relaxes immediately.
“What’d I miss?” he asks.
“A girl came over with her brother I think,” you say softly. “She said your music helped her through some stuff.”
Joe goes quiet for a second.
“…Really?”
“Mhm.”
A small smile pulls at his mouth, softer than before. “That’s nice.”
“She wanted to say thank you.”
He nods slowly. “I’m glad she did.”
You smile into his shoulder.
He nudges you gently. “Eat before you fall asleep on me again.”
“I’m not that tired.”
“You were asleep when I left.”
“I was resting my eyes.”
“Yeah, okay.”
But he still unwraps one of the pastries for you anyway, holding it out.
You take a bite without moving from his shoulder.
Joe watches you for a second, then leans his head lightly against yours.
“Good?” he asks.
“Mhm.”
He smiles to himself.
A few minutes later, a girl walking past slows down.
You notice it first.
Then she whispers something to her friend.
Joe notices too, shoulders shifting slightly.
The girl hesitates for a second before walking over carefully.
“Hi, sorry,” she says, a little nervous. “Are you…?”
Joe smiles immediately, already nodding. “Yeah, hi.”
She lights up. “Oh my God, I’m sorry, I didn’t want to bother you, I just I love your music .”
“Thank you,” he says, easy, warm.
Her friend stands beside her now, smiling at you both.
“Could we maybe get a photo?” she asks.
Joe glances at you quickly.
You’re already smiling. “Of course.”
You stand up first, wiping your hands off and reaching out your hand for her phone.
“I can take it for you,” you say.
She blinks. “Oh, are you sure?”
“Yeah, f’course.”
Joe stands beside her, still a little tucked in, one hand in his pocket, the other resting lightly at his side.
You step back slightly, framing the photo.
“Okay, ready?”
They nod.
You take a few just in case.
“Got it.”
You hand her phone back and she looks at the screen immediately, face lighting up.
“Thank you so much,” she says.
You smile back.
Joe looks at you then.
The girls say goodbye, still smiling, walking away quickly.
You sit back down beside him.
“That was cute,” you say.
“Yeah,” he murmurs.
You glance over.
He’s still looking at you.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re staring.”
He smiles a little. “I know.”
Your leg brushes his under the seat and he shifts closer without even thinking, his knee pressing lightly against yours.
“You okay?” you ask.
“Yeah.”
He leans his head back, exhaling softly, then turns slightly toward you.
“I’m really glad you came.”
You soften immediately. “Me too.”
“No, like…” he pauses. “I didn’t want to do this trip without you.”
You don’t say anything for a second.
Just look at him.
Then you reach over, lacing your fingers through his.
“I’m here.”
Joe squeezes your hand gently, pecking your cheek.
—
You hear the boarding call before you even realise how much time has passed.
“Flight to Tokyo now boarding…”
Joe lifts his head slightly from where it’s been resting against yours.
“That’s us.”
You don’t move straight away, still tucked into his side, holding your coffee.
“Mhm.”
He nudges you gently. “C’mon.”
“Carry me.” You groan.
Joe huffs a quiet laugh. “You’re not serious.”
You don’t respond.
Just stay there.
He looks at you for a second, then shakes his head, smiling.
“You’re unbelievable.” He laughs.
But he stands anyway, reaching for both your bags before offering you his hand.
You take it, letting him pull you up.
The line forms quickly at the gate.
Joe stays close behind you again, one stroking up and down lightly on your hip this time, absentminded, like he doesn’t even realise he’s doing it.
Every time the line moves, he moves with you.
You lean back slightly into him without thinking.
“Tired?” he murmurs near your ear.
“A little.”
He hums softly, thumb brushing against your side.
When it’s your turn, you step forward, handing over your passport and boarding pass.
Joe does the same beside you.
The woman at the gate scans them, smiling politely. “Have a good flight.”
“Thank you,” you both say almost at the same time.
You walk down the jet bridge together, the noise of the airport fading behind you, replaced by that quieter, enclosed hum.
Joe reaches for your hand again.
“Almost there,” he says.
“Thank God.”
“You’re excited really.”
“I am,” you admit.
He smiles a little.
“I’ve been waiting for this.”
“I can tell,” you tease lightly.
“Hey, I planned a really good trip.”
“I know you did baby.”
You squeeze his hand gently.
“I’m excited.”
That makes him glance at you again, softer.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
By the time you step onto the plane, everything feels slower again.
That low, constant hum.
A flight attendant greets you both with a smile.
Joe lets you go first down the aisle, one hand resting lightly against your back as you walk.
You find your seats.
Window for you, of course.
Joe stows the bags above before dropping into the seat beside you.
You settle in, buckling your seatbelt, already sinking into the seat slightly.
Joe glances over.
“You’re gonna knock out the second we take off.”
“I am not.” You frown.
“You literally fell asleep sitting up ten minutes ago.”
“I was resting my eyes sir.”
“Right.”
He smiles, reaching over to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear.
You lean into it without thinking.
“Wake me up when the food comes,” you mumble.
“I will.” He laughs quietly.
“And don’t eat mine.”
“I won’t.”
You narrow your eyes at him. “Joe.”
“I won’t,” he repeats, laughing a little louder now.
The plane starts to move slowly.
You reach for his hand without even looking.
He takes it immediately.
As the plane begins to taxi, his thumb brushes over your knuckles, slow and steady.
“You good?” he asks softly.
“Mhm.”
He squeezes your hand gently.
“I’ve got you.”
You glance over at him.
He’s already looking at you.
Like this whole trip already means something to him.
You smile a little, squeezing his hand back.
—
Somewhere in the middle of the flight, everything is dim and quiet.
You’re half asleep, properly gone this time, curled into Joe’s side without even realizing how much you’ve moved. One of your legs is tucked slightly over his, your arm loosely across his stomach, your face pressed into his shoulder.
Joe’s been awake for a while.
Not really doing anything.
Just letting you sleep on him, one hand resting lightly on your arm.
A flight attendant comes by softly, placing two menus down on the tray in front of you both.
Joe nods a quiet thanks.
He glances down at you.
You’re fully tangled into him.
He smiles to himself before nudging you gently.
“Hey,” he murmurs. “Baby.”
You make a small sound, barely moving.
“Hey,” he tries again, softer. “Food.”
You shift slightly, face scrunching as you wake up slowly.
“Hm…”
Joe brushes his fingers lightly along your arm. “They’ve got menus.”
You blink your eyes open, still half asleep, not moving away from him.
“Okay…”
He picks one up, handing it to you.
You don’t take it straight away, just blink at it like it personally offended you.
Joe laughs quietly. “C’mon.”
You finally sit up a little, still leaning into him as you take it.
You scan it for about five seconds before your expression changes.
Joe already knows that look.
“What?” he smiles.
“I don’t like any of this.”
“You haven’t even read it.”
“I did.”
“You glanced at it.”
“I know what I like.”
He shakes his head, amused. “You’re so picky.”
“I’m not picky.”
“You are.”
You lean your head back against his shoulder again, menu still in your hand.
“I don’t want something weird.”
“It’s plane food,” he says. “It’s all a little weird.”
You sigh softly.
Joe looks between both menus for a second, then nudges you.
“Okay, wait.”
“What?”
“Why don’t I get the first option, you get the other.”
You glance at him.
“And then you can just take whichever one you like better.”
You think about it for a second.
“…Okay.”
“See,” he smiles. “Problem solved.”
“Smart boy.”
“I know.”
You nudge him lightly.
A while later, the food comes.
Joe moves the trays into place while you sit up properly now, still a little sleepy.
You both look down at your meals.
You poke at yours slightly.
Joe watches you.
“Go on,” he says.
You take a small bite.
Your face says everything.
Joe immediately laughs. “That bad?”
You nod slowly. “Yeah.”
“Let me see.”
He leans over slightly, taking a bite from yours.
Considers it.
“It’s not great.” He mumbles back.
“Exactly.”
Joe doesn’t even hesitate after that.
He picks up his fork, scoops some of his food, and holds it out toward you.
“Try this.”
You lean forward, taking the bite.
Chew.
Then you nod immediately.
Joe watches your face, already smiling.
“Better?”
“Mhm.”
Without a word, he switches the trays.
Just slides his in front of you and takes yours instead.
You blink. “Joe.”
“What?”
“You don’t have to—”
“I know.”
He says it so simply, like it’s not even a question.
You look at him for a second.
“Thank you.” You mumbles quietly looking over to him.
He shrugs, already taking another bite like it doesn’t matter. “You’re welcome.”
You eat quietly for a minute, then glance over at him.
“You’re stuck with the bad one now.”
“I’ll survive.”
“You sure?”
He looks at you, smiling slightly. “You’re eating, that’s all I care about.”
You don’t say anything to that.
Just nudge your leg against his under the blanket.
Joe leans back into his seat a little, still eating your original meal without complaining once.
A few minutes later, you pick up your fork again and hold it out toward him.
“Try this part.”
He looks at you.
Then leans forward, taking the bite from your fork without breaking eye contact.
You smile a little.
He smiles back.
And just keeps eating.

You woke slowly to the feeling of Joe’s hand resting against your stomach, his face buried into the pillow beside yours.
For a second neither of you moved.
The room was quiet except for the ceiling fan and distant waves from the nearby beach.
Joe opens his eyes first, still half asleep, looking at you through messy curls.
“You’re awake,” he murmurs, voice thick of sleep.
“Mmm, so are you.”
He shifts closer automatically, arm pulling you against him until your legs tangled together beneath the sheets.
The sunlight coming through the curtains paints soft gold across his skin.
He looks peaceful like this. Different from the version of him everybody else knew.
Just Joe, warm and sleepy, now with a little tan from all the sun, holding you like he doesn’t really know how not to.
Outside, Rio is already alive.
You can hear music faintly from the street below and the rush of traffic along the coast.
Joe presses a bunch of lazy kisses against your shoulder, making you chuckle lightly.
“What do you want to do today?” he asks quietly.
“You promised me a full beach day.”
“I did promise that.” He smiles back.
“No phones, or unexpected phone calls Mr.” You utter as you push his chest with your index finger.
He smiled lazily against your skin. “Bossy.”
“You love it.”
“I really do.”
An hour later the two of you step out onto the Copacabana beach front together, sunlight already reflecting off the ocean so brightly it almost hurt your eyes.
Joe keeps one hand low on your back while you walk.
People pass by constantly.
Runners, tourists, beach vendors, locals carrying surfboards under their arms.
Joe is wearing his dark sunglasses and an open linen shirt over his swim trunks, curls damp from the shower still falling around he’s decided he’s growing it out.
You notice people recognising him almost immediately.
A few double takes, whispers, someone nudging their friend.
Joe notices too, but he stays relaxed beside you, fingers brushing yours every few seconds as you walk toward the sand.
The beach stretches endlessly ahead, crowded with umbrellas and sun chairs and bodies shining under the heat.
“Wow.” Joe utters softly as he looks out at the water.
The ocean looks impossibly blue.
Then…
“Cadeira? Guarda sol? Cold beer? Caipirinha?”
Three different beach sellers approach at once, all talking over each other while balancing chairs and umbrellas under their arms. One of them looks directly at Joe and immediately grinned.
“Gringo,” he laughs.
Another recognises him two seconds later.
“Stranger Things!”
Joe freezes beside you with the most guilty expression imaginable, like he’d personally caused the interaction.
You try not to laugh while another vendor starts gesturing toward empty beach chairs farther down the sand.
“Good price for famous couple.”
Joe looks at you helplessly. “Did he just call us famous?”
“I think so.”
“Oh God.”
The man keeps talking quickly in Portuguese while Joe nods along as if he’s understanding a single word he’s saying.
Then Joe confidently answers, “Não… obrigada?”
The vendor blinks.
You burst out laughing instantly.
“Wrong gender baby,” you whisper.
Joe looks horrified. “What do you mean wrong gender?”
“You just called yourself a woman.”
“How was I supposed to know Portuguese is gendered?”
“It literally sounds gendered.”
The vendors begin laughing now too, mostly at Joe’s painfully American accent as he attempts to recover.
“Desculpa,” he tries carefully. “Sem cadeira.”
The pronunciation comes out unbelievably awkward.
You physically have to look away because you’re laughing too hard now.
One of the older vendors smiles at both of you sympathetically before switching to broken English.
“No chairs?”
You answer quickly in your own disaster mix of Portuguese and Spanish.
“Não, obrigada, maybe later.”
Joe looks over at you immediately. “That was good.”
“It was not.”
“Think it was significantly better than mine.”
The vendors eventually move on after friendly goodbyes, though one points at Joe while walking away and calls out another cheerful “gringos!”
You find a quieter spot nearer to the shoreline and dropped your things into the sand. Joe pulls his shirt over his head before laying back onto his towel immediately, eyes closing.
“Baby, you’re already burning,” you smile down at him.
“That’s impossible. We’ve been here thirty seconds.” He reasons.
“You’re literally pink.”
Joe cracks one eye open. “Hm, I don’t feel it.”
You sit beside him laughing quietly.
The warmth settles over both of you slowly. Joe reaches for your hand without opening his eyes.
You stay like that for a while.
Listening to waves.
Watching people move along the shoreline.
Every now and then you notice phones pointed in your direction. Not obviously, but enough. Someone walking past filming casually.A girl pretending to take a selfie while angling the camera toward Joe.
You could always tell when people recognised him because they started lingering nearby a little too long.
Joe notices too eventually.
“You see that?” he murmurs quietly, eyes now open behind his sunglasses.
“Mhm.”
A group nearby is definitely filming now.
Joe sighs softly before turning his head toward you. “You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“You sure?”
You nod. “As long as they don’t come over.”
He sits up slightly then, reaching over to brush hair away from your face.
“They won’t.”
The way he says it makes you believe him immediately. Protective as always.
Joe leans forward and kisses you softly.
The ocean breeze moves through his brown curls as he pulls back slightly, forehead resting against yours for a second.
“You wanna swim?” he asks.
You smile now with a nod as you pushed back some of the now damp hair that sticks to his forehead. “Yeah.”
The sand burns beneath your feet as you walk toward the water together.
The second the waves hit your legs, Joe inhales sharply.
“Oh-fuck it’s cold.” He whispers.
You laughed as another wave crashed against both of you.
You squeal as the water nearly topples you over, holding onto Joes arm for stability.
“I got you baby.” He murmurs next to as he drags you further in.
The water feels perfect once you get properly in, warm against your skin beneath the sunlight.
Joe moves closer, hands settling naturally on your waist underwater as you wrap your arms around his neck.
Around you, people swim and shout and splash in the waves, but everything feels strangely distant.
Joe looks down at you with that soft expression he gets sometimes when he forgets people are around.
“You look really pretty today,” he states quietly with his big eyes.
“You’ve said that like three times today.” You manage to giggle back.
“Because you do.”
“Thank you baby.” You smile shyly.
The next wave hits harder than expected, making you stumble slightly. Joe laughs immediately, catching you before you lose balance completely.
“C’mere.”
Before you can react properly, he lifts you easily, your legs wrapping around his waist automatically.
You laugh against his shoulder while he holds you above the water.
“There,” he says proudly. “Protected.”
“Think someone just wanted an excuse to carry me.”
“Obviously.” He rolls his eyes.
The ocean moves around both of you gently. Joe’s hands rests securely against your thighs beneath the water while you play with the curls damp against the back of his neck.
He looks ridiculously beautiful in the sunlight.
Wet hair pushed back, skin glowing warm from the heat, eyes nearly golden under the sun, with his chain reflecting off the sun and water.
You kiss him softly.
Joe kisses you back slower this time with a groan, smiling slightly against your mouth when another wave splashes against both of you.
Somewhere nearby you hear people reacting quietly, probably filming again.
Whatever.
But Joe barely seems to notice anymore, his attention stays completely on you.
When you eventually walk back onto the sand, Joe drops onto the towel beside you with a groan.
“I’m exhausted.”
“Poor baby.” You pout whilst rummaging for the sunscreen in your beach bag.
“Sit up.” You state.
Joe looks over immediately groaning. “Am I burnt?”
“Yes.” You laugh.
“How bad?”
Instead of responding, you just place your hand on his very warm shoulder, waiting for him to flinch with the sensitivity.
“Okay-okay! Ouch baby.” He winces as you grimace, moving closer to him.
He now sits between your legs while you squeeze sunscreen into your hands.
The second your fingers touch his shoulders, he relaxes completely.
You rub sunscreen slowly across his back and shoulders while he sits there quietly, head tilted slightly back against your stomach like a little boy.
A few minutes later he turns around to face you when you let out a sigh.
“What?”
“You missed part of your face earlier silly.” You mutter softly, touching the side of his face.
Joe smiles lazily. “You gonna fix it?”
You shift closer without thinking as he turns, you push him down onto his towel, straddling his lap so you could reach properly.
Joe’s hands settle automatically on your thighs.
The beach noise around you blurs together softly while you rub sunscreen carefully across his cheeks and nose.
He watches you the entire time, not even trying to hide it.
“What?” you ask eventually, smiling a little.
“Nothing.”
“You’re staring.”
“I know.”
His fingertips move absentmindedly against your legs.
You can feel the warmth of his skin beneath your hands, smell saltwater and sunscreen and the ocean lingering between both of you.
One of his hands slides gently against your waist as he tilts his head back slightly so you can reach his forehead.
While you begin to rub sunscreen across the area, you notice his curls immediately falling back down into the way again from the ocean water.
“Stay still,” you murmur.
Joe’s hands rest lazily on your thighs again while he looks up at you from beneath the sunlight.
“Huh?” He hums confused.
You lean back slightly, reaching into your beach bag beside the towel until your fingers find one of your turtle shell headband tangled between your tanning oil and sunglasses.
Joe watches you quietly the entire time.
The second you move back toward him, he already tilts his head forward a little for you without even asking what you were doing.
You smile softly at that.
Carefully, you push the damp curls away from his forehead with your headband.
Joe doesn’t complain once. Doesn’t even question it.
He just sits there with his hands warm against your waist, letting you fuss over him while the ocean moves behind both of you.
“There,” you say quietly.
Joe looks up at you through half closed eyes. “Am I beautiful now?”
“You look ridiculous.”
“But beautiful?”
You laugh softly. “So beautiful baby.”
He grins immediately, still wearing the headband in his hair like he had absolutely no intention of taking it out, and it strangely suits him.
Later, a woman carrying bikinis over one arm stops beside your towels
“Biquíni, linda?” she asks with a smile.
You sit up immediately, brushing sand off your legs while Joe looks over from beside you, sunglasses low on his nose.
The bikinis are actually really pretty. Tiny beaded ones, crochet ones, bright colors catching in the sunlight.
You pick one up uncertainly. “Muito bonita,” you attempt carefully.
The woman starts speaking quickly in Portuguese and your expression blanks halfway through listening, panic immediately creeping in.
“Maybe… pequeno? No, wait. Pequena?” you try, holding up the bikini top helplessly.
Joe laughs quietly beside you, one hand resting against your thigh as he sits up.
“You’re creating entirely new languages right now.”
“I’m trying my best.”
The woman smiles politely while showing you another bikini, pale blue with tiny beads along the straps.
Before you can even properly look at it, Joe points immediately.
“That one.”
You glance over at him. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“You only like it because it’s tiny.”
Joe smiles lazily from behind his sunglasses. “Maybe.”
You roll your eyes, holding it against yourself anyway while the woman nods enthusiastically.
Joe stares for a second too long.
“What?” you ask.
“You’d look really pretty in that.”
The way he says it is so casual and soft that it catches you off guard a little.
His hand slides slowly along your leg while he keeps looking at you like you’re the only thing on the entire beach worth paying attention to.
You look back down at the bikini quickly to hide the fact you’re smiling.
“How much?” you ask the woman in English first before attempting Portuguese again. “Quanto custa?”
Joe looks genuinely impressed at your very broken Portuguese.
The woman answers quickly and you immediately look at Joe. “No idea.”
He laughs softly.
The woman ends up showing the price on her phone instead and you shake your head instantly.
“That’s expensive.”
Joe takes the bikini gently from your hands, looking at it for another second before looking back at you.
“I’m buying it for you.”
“You are not.”
“I am.”
“Joe.”
He smiles a little. “Baby…c’mon.”
“You don’t need to buy me bikinis.”You reason.
“I know.” His thumb brushes slowly against your knee. “I want to.”
The woman is definitely listening now with the most entertained expression ever while Joe reaches for his wallet anyway.
“You’re impossible,” you mutter.
“You love me.”
Unfortunately, he sounds very confident saying it too.
A minute later the woman hands over the little bag and Joe passes it to you proudly like he’s just accomplished something important.
“There.” He states.
“You didn’t have to do that…but thank you.” You look at him, leaning in to peck his lips.
Joe laughs softly kissing you back, leaning closer until his shoulder presses against yours.
“You’re wearing it tomorrow.”
“We’ll see.”
“No,” he says, smiling as he looks at you properly again. “You really will look beautiful in it.”
The beach starts getting quieter later in the afternoon.
The sunlight turns softer, warmer, casting everything in gold while music drifts faintly from somewhere farther down the shore.
You’re sitting cross legged on the towel beside Joe, trying to braid your damp hair away from your face while he lazily flips through settings on his film camera.
A few people still glance over occasionally, recognising him, but most of the beach has settled into that sleepy evening calm.
Then an older woman walking along the shoreline slows near your towels.
She’s carrying sandals in one hand, smiling already before she even speaks.
“Casal bonito,” she says warmly.
You blink for a second before realizing what she means.
Pretty couple.
Joe looks over at you immediately. “What’d she say?”
“I think she just called us a pretty couple.”
Joe smiles instantly.
The woman keeps talking in soft, rapid Portuguese while gesturing between both of you affectionately.
You try your best to answer.
“Obrigada,” you say carefully, smiling back at her.
Joe glances at you with visible surprise. “Okay wait, where was that earlier?”
“I’m adapting.”
The woman laughs softly before switching into gentle broken English.
“You two very lovely together,” she says.
Your face warms immediately.
Joe, meanwhile, looks completely gone already.
The woman keeps smiling at both of you. “Very much love,” she says, pressing her hand dramatically to her chest.
You laugh quietly, a little embarrassed now. “Thank you.”
“She’s right,” Joe says softly from beside you.
You glance over.
He’s already lifting the film camera toward you.
“Joe.”
“What?”
“You don’t need photographic evidence of this interaction.”
But he’s barely listening anymore.
Because the older woman says something else in Portuguese that you only half understand, reaching over to touch your arm gently while smiling at you both.
And Joe just looks completely in awe watching you try to answer her.
Your broken Portuguese.
The way you keep laughing nervously halfway through sentences.
The sunlight catching against your now sunkissed skin and hair while the ocean moves behind you.
Click.
You look over immediately.
“Did you just take a picture?”
Joe lowers the camera slightly, smiling to himself. “Yeah.”
“You’re unbelievable.”
The woman notices and laughs warmly. “Ahh,” she says knowingly, pointing at Joe. “Apaixonado.”
Joe looks at you instantly. “What does that mean?”
You hesitate.
The woman answers for you with a grin.
“In love.”
Joe goes strangely quiet for a second after that. Still looking at you.
The older woman waves goodbye a minute later, continuing her walk down the beach while both of you watch her disappear into the crowd.
Then you look back at Joe. He’s still holding the camera loosely in his hands, staring at you with the softest expression you’ve seen all day.
“What?” you ask quietly.
“You’re so beautiful baby.” He smiles.
You just cover your face in embarrassment and chuckle.
His thumb brushes along the side of the camera absentmindedly while he keeps looking at you.
Then he lifts it again.
You laugh immediately. “Joe.”
“One more.” He reasons moving your hands away from your face.
“You already took like fifty.”
“And I’ll take fifty more.”
The camera clicks again while you’re still smiling at him.
“I think this might’ve been my favourite day we’ve had in a long time,” he says softly.
“Yeah?” You just smile back giddily, looking up at him.
The way he says it feels so sweet and honest enough to make your chest ache a little.
“God you’re so cute baby.” You utter at him now, moving closer to take the camera out of his hand to kiss him.
“I love you.” He murmurs lips touching yours.
"I love you too.” You whisper back, playing with the ends of his hair.

no crazy warnings, just fluff and touchy joe with some kissing.
enjoy!
You and the group had landed early that morning, dragging suitcases through the airport, half asleep and slightly delirious, all of you running on festival energy and last minute decisions from the night before.
With that, Joe is barely awake.
He’s got his favourite Boston cap pulled low, hood up over it, sunglasses on, and he’s leaning into you as you walk, his head tipping slightly toward yours, shoulder brushing yours every few steps.
But still, your hands are linked.
“You’re actually asleep,” you mumble, glancing at him.
“I’m not,” he says, voice rough, not convincing at all.
“You’re literally walking into me.”
“On purpose.”
“Why?”
“Warm,” he mutters.
You laugh softly, squeezing his hand. “You’re funny.”
“Mm.”
He doesn’t elaborate.
Just tightens his hold on you slightly as you make your way toward baggage claim.
The carousel’s already going when you get there, people gathered around it, watching their bags circle like it’s the most important thing in the world.
Joe doesn’t move to the front.
He just stays behind the line with you, shifting closer until he’s basically leaning on you completely now with his head dipping for a second like he might actually fall asleep standing up.
“Joe…baby,” you say, nudging him lightly with your shoulder.
“Yeah?”
“Stay conscious.”
“I am.”
“You’re not.”
He huffs a quiet laugh, eyes still hidden behind his sunglasses. “I’m trying so hard.”
Your suitcase comes around.
You spot it first, stepping forward slightly but Joe’s already moving before you can say anything.
Still half asleep, but he lets go of your hand just long enough to grab it off the belt, pulling it down with one easy motion.
Then he’s back, dropping the handle into your hand before slipping his fingers back through yours like it’s automatic.
“Thank you,” you say.
He just nods, leaning into you again, head tipping slightly toward yours.
You reach up without thinking, brushing your fingers lightly along his cheek.
“Poor baby,” you tease softly.
He turns his face into your hand for half a second with a small pout.
His suitcase rolls past but neither of you notices.
“Joe.”
“Mm?”
“Your bag.”
“Oh.”
He straightens slightly, just enough to grab it as it comes around again, dragging it back over with minimal effort before settling right back into your space.
You shake your head, smiling.
“Hopeless.”
“Yeah.”
The walk toward the exit is quicker now.
You can feel it before you see it, the shift in energy, the noise picking up slightly and loads of people lingering near the doors.
Joe straightens a little more now.
His hand tightens around yours, and he subtly shifts so he’s slightly in front of you as you get closer.
“Stay with me,” he murmurs.
“I am.”
The doors slide open, revealing a swarm of people shouting almost immediately.
Phones come up almost instantly.
“Joe!”
“Oh my god hi!”
“Can we get a picture?”
Joe exhales softly, but there’s no annoyance in it.
His hand squeezes yours once before he gently pulls you slightly behind him, positioning himself between you and the crowd without making it obvious.
“Hey,” he says, stepping forward just enough. “Yeah, of course.”
He doesn’t let go of you completely.
Your hand stays tucked behind him, his thumb brushing lightly over your knuckles.
It starts quickly.
The photos, smiles and quick half conversations.
He’s warm and patient, even though he still looks half asleep answering people, thanking them, leaning in for pictures.
Then—
“Hi—sorry—can I—”
You look up.
A girl, a little nervous, phone in hand.
She’s looking at you.
“Can I get a photo with you?” she asks.
You blink.
“Me?”
She nods quickly. “Yeah, if that’s okay.”
You glance at Joe instinctively.
He’s already looking at you, a small smile pulling at his mouth like he’s just as surprised but also not.
“Go on,” he murmurs.
You turn back to her, smiling. “Yeah, of course.”
She lights up immediately, stepping closer.
Joe shifts slightly to the side, giving you space but not moving far still right there, still close enough that his arm brushes yours.
You lean in for the photo, smiling naturally as she takes it.
“Thank you so much,” she says quickly after, lowering her phone. “You’re so beautiful, by the way.”
You pause for a second, caught off guard.
“Oh—thank you,” you say, a little softer. “So are you!.”
She smiles again, clearly a bit nervous, then glances at Joe.
“And you guys are really cute.”
Joe lets out a quiet laugh at that.
You feel his hand brush yours again.
“Thanks,” he says easily.
She says goodbye, moving back into the crowd.
And you’re left standing there, still processing slightly.
“That was new,” you say under your breath.
“Yeah,” Joe replies.
You glance at him. “People don’t usually ask me.”
“They should.”
You snort. “Shut up.”
“I’m serious.”
He looks at you properly now.
Still sleepy.
But there’s something softer there. Proud, almost.
“You handled that well baby,” he adds.
“I said thank you.” You reason.
“Exactly.”
You shake your head, smiling despite yourself.
“Come on,” you say. “Before more people show up.”
“Yeah,” he nods.
—
Lollapalooza was still in full swing, and Joe was already being pulled straight into rehearsal the second you got in.
You’d tag along for part of it, standing off to the side, watching him run through things, the stage bigger than it looked on screen.
Crew members moving around, adjusting cables, calling things out in quick Portuguese. The sun hits everything harshly, but once Joe stepped under the lights, it was a different kind of heat entirely.
He’d been focused, quieter than usual, but every now and then he’d glance over at you like he needed to check you were still there.
He grabs his guitar, rolling his shoulders once like he’s settling into it.
He runs through a few chords, sounds echoing out into the empty space. Someone from the crew adjusts something, giving him a thumbs up.
“Could you turn down my in ears please.” He calls out politely, tapping his ear.
Then he glances over straight at you.
You raise an eyebrow, already smiling.
He smirks slightly, then leans into the mic.
“Testing,” he says casually. “One, two—”
Then, quieter, like it’s not meant for the whole stage
“You good over there?”
You laugh, shaking your head. “I’m fine.”
One of the crew guys looks between you both, confused, but Joe just keeps going like nothing is happening.
“Cool,” he utters into the mic. “Just checking.”
You roll your eyes, but you can’t stop smiling.
He starts playing properly then, running through part of Roddy, but every so often, his attention drifts. A quick glance in your direction, like he needs that anchor.
At one point, he stops mid run.
“Actually, wait,” he begins, stepping back from the mic. “Come here for a second.”
You blink. “What?”
“Come here.” He repeats, summoning you with his index and middle finger.
You hesitate at first, then walk closer, stopping just at the edge of the stage.
“What?” you repeat.
He’s crouching slightly, resting his forearms on his knees, looking down at you.
“How does it sound?” he asks full of pride.
“Good,” you mumble, trying not to boost his ego.
“Just good?”
“You’re sweaty already.”
“That’s not what I asked baby.”
“Hot though,” you add, shrugging.
He lets out a short laugh, shaking his head. “You’re unbelievable.”
“Just being the supportive girlfriend I am.”
“You’re distracting.”
“And yet you called me over.”
“Yeah, that’s on me.”
You smile, stepping back again. “Get back to work dork.”
He watches you go for a second longer than necessary.
Then stood up again, adjusting his guitar.
—
Afterwards, though, everything loosened again.
The rest of the group disappeared pretty quickly, someone mentioned food with Wes loudly insisting he needed both and plans split off in every direction.
You ended up back outside with Joe, the afternoon sun still high, neither of you really in a rush to go anywhere.
The noise and constant movement, like the city doesn’t really pause for anything, and you either keep up or get swallowed by it.
You’ve got one of Joe’s caps pulled low, sunglasses on, and a Brazil football top tied slightly at the waist. Joe’s wearing the same one, his hanging looser, sleeves rolled up, sunglasses doing absolutely nothing to make him less recognisable.
You clock that immediately.
“You know this was a bad idea,” you say as you walk down the street, fingers loosely laced with his.
“What was?” he asks, glancing at you.
“The matching shirts.”
He looks down at himself, then back at you. “What? It’s a good shirt.”
“It’s a very good shirt. That’s not the point.”
“What’s the point?”
“The point is people are going to notice us from a mile away.”
“Us?” he raises an eyebrow.
“You,” you correct quickly. “You’re the problem.”
He laughs under his breath, squeezing your hand slightly. “You agreed to it.”
“I didn’t think it through.”
“Clearly.”
You bump your shoulder into his. “Don’t get cocky.”
“I’m not cocky,” he says. “I’m right.”
“You’re annoying.”
“Mmm, you like it.”
You don’t answer that.
But you don’t let go of his hand either.
You turn the corner, scanning the shops, and then something catches your eye. A small vintage store tucked between two louder storefronts, slightly hidden, racks visible through the glass.
“Ooo, there,” you say, pointing.
Joe follows your gaze. “That one?”
“Yeah.”
He squints. “Looks interesting.”
“Exactly why it’s good.”
He lets you pull him toward it, your hands still linked, his thumb brushing lightly over your knuckles as you walk.
“You survived rehearsal, by the way,” you add, glancing at him.
“Barely,” he exhales. “It’s so hot on stage. I don’t know how I’m supposed to function.”
“Oh I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
“I was sweating through everything.”
“Super hot,” you mumble immediately.
He turns his head, giving you a look over his sunglasses.
“What? I’m boosting your confidence.” You smirk.
“By calling me sweaty?”
“By calling you hot.”
He shakes his head, smiling slightly.
Before he can say anything else, someone approaches.
“Sorry, are you Djo?”
Joe sighs softly under his breath, already nodding. “Yeah, hi.”
You step back automatically, letting go of his hand so they can take a picture.
It happens fast. It always does.
A quick photo, a thank you, a compliment, and then they’re gone.
Joe turns back to you immediately.
“See?” you say. “The shirts.”
He shrugs. “Could’ve been anything.”
Another person approaches.
Then another.
You don’t even say anything this time, you just give him a look.
He smiles, slightly apologetic but not surprised.
“Two minutes,” he murmurs to you.
“Take your time baby,” you say lightly, but you’re already stepping aside again.
You watch him for a second.
The way he switches so easily, kind, patiently taking photos, making conversation like it doesn’t cost him anything.
You can’t even be annoyed.
When he finally makes his way back to you, he reaches for your hand again without hesitation.
“Sorry,” he says.
“You say that like I didn’t warn you.” You reply.
“Oh, you did.”
“Repeatedly.”
“Still sorry.”
You smile a little. “Stop apologising, it’s fine.”
He studies your face for a second, like he’s checking if you actually mean it.
Then nods.
“Alright,” he says, squeezing your hand. “Let’s go before it happens again.”
You push open the door to the shop.
A small bell rings above you.
Inside is packed with racks overflowing, denim, dresses, random pieces hanging off hooks like they’ve been there forever. It smells like old fabric.
Joe steps in behind you, looking around.
You drop his hand as you move toward a rack, already flipping through clothes.
“Don’t wander too far,” he says.
You glance back at him. “Why, you’ll miss me?”
“Yeah,” he says easily.
That catches you slightly off guard.
You try to play it off, turning back to the rack. “You’re clingy today.”
“You’re the one dragging me around.”
“You’re so enjoying it.”
He doesn’t deny it.
You pull out a couple of things, a skirt, a top, something you’re not even sure about, and hold them up against yourself in the mirror.
Joe watches from a few steps away, arms crossed loosely.
“Thoughts for Coachella maybe…if we decide to go?” you ask, turning slightly with a smile.
“Try it on.”
“That’s not a thought sir.”
“It’s a direction.”
“You’re bossy.” You utter.
“Just helping.” He smiles.
You roll your eyes with a huff but head toward the changing area anyway.
The curtain barely closes properly, but you make it work.
You change quickly, then step out, doing a small spin.
“Well?”
Joe looks up.
And this time he doesn’t answer straight away.
“Woah, yeah,” he says slowly. “That’s good.”
“Just good?”
He steps a little closer. “Better than good.”
“Better?” You grin, disappearing back behind the curtain to change again.
A few outfits later, you’re laughing more, getting more comfortable, stepping out without even thinking twice.
Each time, his eyes linger a little longer and each time, his comments get a little less casual.
At some point, he disappears.
You don’t notice until he comes back holding something.
“What’s that?” you ask.
“Try it.”
He hands it to you.
It’s a dress.
An olive green, somewhat fitted yet still flowy dress. Very beautiful nonetheless.
You raise an eyebrow. “You picked this?”
“Yeah.”
“Interesting.”
“You’ll look good in it.”
“Oh yeah? I don’t know, don’t really have an occasion for it.” You smile.
“Just try it.”
You take it, brushing past him slightly as you head back behind the curtain.
“Don’t get your hopes up,” you call out.
“They’re already up.”
“Shut up.”
You pull the dress on.
It fits perfectly.
Of course it does.
You look at yourself for a second, adjusting it slightly, smoothing it down.
“…okay,” you mutter to yourself.
Then louder, “Joe.”
“Yeah?”
“Can you zip it?”
There’s a small pause.
Then, “Yeah.”
You pull the curtain open just enough.
He steps in.
The space feels smaller with him in it.
You turn around, lifting your hair.
“Careful. Don’t rip the zip with your strong hands.” You joke.
“I won’t.” He smiles back through the mirror.
His fingers find the zipper, light at first. Then steady as he pulls it up slowly.
You feel his hand brush your back as he finishes.
He doesn’t move away straight after, staying quiet.
You glance at him over your shoulder. “You good?”
His eyes drop, taking you in properly now.
“You look so beautiful baby.”
You smile slightly. “Yeah you think so?”
“Yeah.”
You turn to face him fully.
There’s barely any space between you now.
“Thank you. You picked it,” you remind him.
“I know.”
“Good taste hm.”
“Clearly.” He nods.
His hand finds your waist.
Slow, like he’s giving you time to stop him.
You don’t.
Your fingers drift up to his arm, then to the back of his neck without really thinking.
“You’re staring,” you say.
“Can you blame me?”
“Mmm, maybe.”
He steps a little closer.
“Turn around again,” he says.
“What?”
“Let me see it properly.”
You laugh softly but do it anyway, turning slowly.
You feel his hand brush lightly down your back, following the line of the zipper he just pulled up.
“Yeah,” he says under his breath. “You’re getting that.”
“I don’t even need it.”
“No you definitely do.”
“Joe…” you begin, looking up at him through the mirror.
“I wanna see you wear it again.” He reasons near your ear as his hands move up and down the fabric.
“But-”
“Baby, you clearly like it. Let me buy it for you.” He replies.
You look back at him again, as he looks at your reflection in the mirror with his big puppy eyes you could never say no to.
“Fine.”
You turn back to him.
“You’re evil.” You utter.
He just smiles and leans in slowly.
Like he’s giving you every chance to pull away.
You don’t.
Your lips meet, soft at first, then warmer, closer.
Your fingers tighten slightly in his hair as his hand presses more firmly into your waist, pulling you in.
The curtain shifts slightly behind you, the outside noise faint but still there.
It makes it worse. Or better.
You’re not sure.
“You’re gonna get us caught,” you whisper against his lips.
“Worth it,” he murmurs.
You laugh softly, but you kiss him again.
Then the music cuts through the shop.
You freeze for half a second.
Then your eyes widen with a gasp.
“Wait—”
Joe barely pulls back, lips still brushing yours. “What?”
Your jaw drops. “Your song.”
It clicks for him a second later.
Basic being Basic starts playing properly through the shop speakers.
You gasp dramatically again, grabbing his arm.
“Baby it’s—your song is playing!”
He groans immediately, dropping his head slightly. “Oh my god.”
You step back just enough to look at him properly, eyes lighting up, already mouthing the words as the intro plays.
“Don’t,” he warns.
You ignore him completely.
You start lip syncing, pointing at him like you’re putting on a full performance just for him.
“Stop—” he says, laughing now, trying to grab your hands.
“No,” you grin, dodging him slightly.
You keep going, dramatic, over the top, spinning slightly in the dress just to annoy him more.
He watches you for a second.
Really watches you.
And something in his expression shifts again.
“Yeah?” You tease, still mouthing the lyrics. “You like this one?”
He steps forward.
“Yeah,” he says.
But he’s not looking at the performance anymore. He’s looking at you.
You barely get through another line before his hands are back on you, pulling you in again.
“Joe—” you laugh, cutting yourself off.
“I don’t care,” he murmurs.
He kisses you again.
Like the song isn’t even playing.
You laugh into it, trying to keep lip syncing between kisses.
“You’re missing your own song.”
“I’ve heard it before.”
“That’s not—”
He cuts you off again, lips moving from yours to your jaw this time, slower, warmer.
Your breath catches.
“Oh—okay.” You mumble, completely losing your rhythm.
The music keeps playing in the background.
You try to keep going, mouthing a few words, but it falls apart when his lips trail just slightly lower, brushing your neck.
“Joe—your song—” you say again, weaker this time.
“Yeah, yeah,” he murmurs against your skin, clearly not listening.
His hand slides along your side, pulling you closer again, like he forgot where you were for a second.
You let out a small laugh, head tipping back slightly.
“You’re so—”
He kisses your neck again.
You forget what you were saying.
The song keeps playing.
You completely give up on performing.
“Okay, wow,” you breathe, fingers tightening in his hair. “You’re actually ignoring your own music.”
“Priorities,” he says simply.
coachella pt.2- joe keery x reader
hi hi, so I decided on a pt.2 for this little series since I got so much love on the first part :)
this one’s a little longer (4.6k)
warnings- jealous joe and jealous reader, angst nothing too crazy, little possessive
enjoy lovelies <3
Day two.
Oh god.
You groan into the pillow.
A hand brushes over your shoulder, slow and familiar.
“You alive baby?” Joe’s voice is rough, still half asleep but amused.
“Barely,” you mumble, not moving. “I think I died actually.”
He huffs a quiet laugh behind you, shifting closer. His arm slides around your waist, pulling you back into him like it’s instinct. “Well you seemed to be doing just fine at 3 a.m.”
You turn your head slightly, trying to squint up at him. “Shhh.”
“I’m just saying,” he smirks, eyes still soft with sleep. “You were the one who wanted to—”
“Joe.” You close your eyes now, not wanting to remember what you did.
“put music on—”
“Joe.”
“And do that whole little strip tease—”
You shove his arm around you weakly, but you’re laughing despite yourself. “That did not happen.”
“Oh, It absolutely did,” he says, grin widening.
“Oh my god.”
“You also tried to make Jake and Court do shots the second they got here.”
“I don’t remember that.”
“Exactly.”
You groan again, burying your face back into the pillow.
His hand smooths over your arm, slower now. “You okay though?”
You nod into the fabric. “Just regretting my decisions s’all.”
“Yeah?” he murmurs lowly, leaning in slightly. “Every decision?”
You turn your head just enough to look at him again.
He was totally smirking.
Fuck him.
“Okay, not…like, every decision.”
“Good,” he says quietly pecking your cheek.
By the time you’re all ready, the energy is completely different.
The house is louder now, with Jake already talking over everyone, Courtney trying to take pictures of him, Wes and Javi showing up like the group just doubled from the day before.
“Look who’s alive!” Jake calls the second you walk in.
You flip him off lazily. “Don’t.”
Courtney immediately clocks you with a smile, eyes lighting up as she walks over. “Oh, looks like someone had fun yesterday.”
You bring your index finger to your lip as if to shush the conversation as you pull her into a hug.
She lowers her voice slightly. “Worth it?”
You hesitate for half a second, glancing over her shoulder.
Joe’s across the room, mid conversation, laughing at something Wes said but his eyes flick over, landing on you like it’s automatic.
You look back at Courtney.
“Mmm, maybe.”
She grins. “Oh my god.”
“Shut up.”
The walk into the VIP area is already chaotic.
Too many people, too much sun, music bleeding in from different stages. Everyone’s talking at once, bumping into each other, sunglasses going on and off, someone already suggesting drinks before you’ve even properly stepped inside.
Joe stays close.
He had a thing with physical touch, no matter how warm it was.
His hand brushes yours every few steps, or he leans slightly toward you when someone cuts between you.
“Drinks?” Jake announces, already halfway to the bar.
“Of course you’re the first one,” Courtney calls after him.
“Hydration is important babe.” He jokes as the boys laugh.
You laugh weakly, but the thought of alcohol makes your stomach turn slightly.
Courtney notices immediately. “Yeah, no. Absolutely not.”
“Thank you,” you say, relieved.
“We’re getting you some electrolytes.”
“God, I love you.”
“I know.”
The group settles near one of the bars anyway, Jake already ordering, Wes and Javi joining in, everyone slipping back into that easy, loud rhythm.
Joe’s beside you, one hand resting lightly at your lower back.
“You sure you don’t want anything?” he asks, leaning in so you can hear him over the noise.
You shake your head. “If I drink this early I think I’ll actually die.”
He pulls you in and kisses your head in return.
Courtney nudges you. “Come on. Before you change your mind.”
You nod, starting to step away, then Joe’s hand catches your wrist gently.
“Hey.” He utters.
You turn back.
He studies your face for a second, like he’s checking over you.
“You good to walk?” he asks.
You blink. “Yeah?”
“I can come with you,” he adds, quieter. “If you want.”
“Baby, I’ll be okay,” you say softly. “Court said it’s close by.”
His thumb brushes once against your wrist before he lets go.
“Alright,” he nods. “Text me if—”
“I won’t get lost,” you laugh.
“I didn’t say you would.”
“You were thinking it.”
“Maybe a little.”
Courtney is already a few steps ahead, turning back dramatically. “Are you two done or—”
“Go,” Joe says, smiling slightly. “Before she faints.”
“I’m not going to faint,” you protest, but you let Courtney pull you along anyway.
The noise fades slightly as you move away from the bar, weaving through people, past shaded areas and mirrored booths and clusters of conversations.
“‘Baby’?” Courtney says immediately.
“Oh my god.”
“You didn’t even react.”
“Oh I did internally.”
“Right,” she nods. “Internally you’re screaming.”
You exhale, rubbing your temples. “I’m too hungover to even process that right now.”
She laughs.
You glance ahead, avoiding the question. “Where are we even going?”
“There’s a hydration stand somewhere. I saw it earlier.”
“Of course you did.”
“I plan ahead.”
You find it eventually, tucked slightly away from the main crowd much quieter.
You grab a bottle immediately, pressing it against your forehead before even opening it.
“Oh, that’s nice,” you sigh as Courtney chuckled at the reaction.
You both lean against the counter for a minute, letting the world slow down.
The music is still there but distant now.
You take a sip, closing your eyes briefly.
“Better?” she asks.
“Mhm.” You hum back.
“You and Joe were loud last night, by the way.” She blurts out.
You choke slightly. “What?” You pull away from the bottle.
“I’m just saying,” she shrugs, way too casually. “The walls are thin.”
“Oh my god, Courtney.”
“I’m not judging!”
You cover your face with your hand. “I’m never coming back.”
“Oh don’t be so dramatic.” She smiles.
You both laugh, the tension breaking again.
But something lingers.
The memory of his hands, his voice, the way last night blurred into something maybe a little too reckless.
When you head back, the energy picks up again instantly.
The group is still there, louder now, drinks in hand, Jake mid story again.
Joe spots you immediately.
His posture shifts, just slightly, like something clicks back into place.
He steps toward you before you’ve even fully reached them.
“You survive?” he asks.
You hold up the drink. “Barely.”
“Proud of you.”
“Thank you.” You roll your eyes.
He takes the bottle from your hand for a second, twisting the cap tighter before handing it back.
“Drink it,” he adds.
“Yes, dad.”
“Don’t start.”
You smile, and this time when he rests his hand at your waist, it stays there.
Wes glances between you both, smirking. “You two good over there?”
“Shut up,” you and Joe say at the same time.
Courtney just laughs.
Then it happens all at once, like always.
One second you’re tucked into Joe’s side, his hand warm and steady at your waist, the bass from a nearby set starting to build again, and the next, there’s a shift in the air.
“Wait—sorry are you Djo?”
A group of girls three, maybe four hover just close enough to interrupt without technically being rude.
Joe’s hand stills slightly against your side.
He turns, already polite. “Yeah, hi.”
And that’s it.
They light up instantly.
“Oh my god, we love you.”
“We saw you yesterday at Turnstile but—”
“You’re literally—”
They’re talking over each other, laughing, stepping closer. One of them reaches out, touching his arm like it’s nothing.
You feel it more than you see it.
The shift.
The way his attention has to split now.
You take a small step back without thinking, giving them space.
“Hi,” one of the girls says again, louder this time, like they’re trying to pull him further in. “Can we get a picture?”
“Yeah, of course,” Joe nods easily.
He glances back for half a second instinctively to you but it’s already pulling him away.
They’re already positioning themselves.
One of them steps right into his side, another tilting her head onto his shoulder like it’s natural.
You blink.
Oh.
“Yikes,” Courtney says softly.
“Yikes,” you echo.
You try not to stare.
You really do.
But it’s hard not to notice the way they lean in too close, laughing at everything he says, one of them brushing her hand down his arm again like she’s testing something.
And they don’t look at you.
Not once.
Like you’re not even there.
Hey, shit happens.
Joe’s still being himself, kind, easy, smiling, answering their questions but there’s a slight tightness now. You can see it if you look properly.
But they don’t.
They’re too busy orbiting him.
You shift your weight, taking a sip of your drink.
It tastes flat suddenly.
“God are they all like this?” Courtney murmurs. “I don’t like them.”
You snort quietly. “You don’t even know them.”
“I know the type.”
“Yeah.” You hum back.
Another laugh from the group.
Another hand on his arm.
Another “you’re so funny.”
Your stomach twists slightly.
Not because he’s doing anything wrong.
He isn’t.
That almost makes it worse.
Then more people come over, now talking to Wes, Jake and Javi, clearly recognising them.
You glance at Courtney.
She’s already looking at you.
A silent, mutual absolutely not.
You don’t say anything though.
It’s not your place after all.
You trust Joe.
It was part of the famous boyfriend description after all.
Just still weird.
You just reach for your drink, fingers tightening slightly around it then your other hand finds Courtney’s.
She laces her fingers with yours instantly, no hesitation.
“Let’s go,” she says, already moving.
You step out of the circle without a word, weaving past people, pulling Courtney with you. The music gets louder as you move toward the open space near the stage, still in VIP, but the crowds thicker.
You don’t look back.
Not yet.
“Okay,” Courtney says once you’ve put some distance between you and them. “That was insane.”
“Mm.”
“They didn’t even—”
“I know.”
“They literally acted like we didn’t exist.”
“I know,” you repeat, sharper this time.
She softens immediately. “Hey.”
You exhale, shaking your head. “It’s fine. It’s just… annoying.”
“Yeah,” she agrees. “It is.”
You take another sip of your drink, then glance back and there he is.
Already looking for you.
Joe’s head is turned, scanning, his attention no longer on the group around him. There’s a flicker of confusion, then something sharper when he realises you’re gone.
Your eyes meet across the space.
He frowns slightly, already stepping away from them.
Courtney follows your gaze, smirking. “Oh, he’s clocked it.”
“Don’t,” you warn.
“I’m just saying—”
“He was just being nice.”
“And now he’s leaving,” she points out.
You look back at him.
He’s already moving through the crowd, faster than before, like he’s trying not to make it obvious but also not really succeeding.
Your chest tightens.
“Come on,” you say suddenly.
Courtney raises an eyebrow. “Where?”
You nod toward the stage, where the music is picking up, lights starting to flicker as the set builds.
“We’re gonna dance.”
Her grin is immediate. “Oh, I like this plan.”
You don’t wait.
You pull her into the crowd, letting the music swallow you up, louder now, heavier, vibrating through your chest.
People press in from all sides, bodies moving, hands in the air, heat rising again.
Courtney spins once, laughing, pulling you with her.
“There she is,” she shouts over the music. “Those electrolytes did you good, I’m telling you!”
You laugh, finally letting go a little, moving with her, the tension in your chest loosening with every beat.
You don’t notice Joe right away.
Not until a hand catches your wrist.
You turn instinctively.
And there he is.
Slightly out of breath, hair messier than before, sunglasses pushed up into it. His expression is somewhere between confused and a little thrown.
“There you are,” he says.
The music is loud, but you can hear him.
“You disappeared,” he adds.
You tilt your head slightly. “I was right there.”
“Yeah, and then you weren’t.”
Courtney leans in, smirking. “I’m gonna—” she gestures vaguely. “Be over there.”
“Traitor,” you mutter.
She just winks and melts into the crowd.
Joe’s still holding your wrist.
“Everything okay?” he asks, softer now.
You shrug, trying for casual. “Yeah. Just wanted to dance.”
He studies your face for a second.
Then glances back, toward where he left the group of girls, still lingering, still watching.
Something clicks.
“Oh,” he says quietly.
You don’t respond.
You just lift your chin slightly. “You can go back if you want.”
His eyebrows pull together. “What?”
“They were waiting for you.”
“I know.”
“So—”
“Don’t do that.” He mutters.
“I’m not doing anything.” You try and smile back.
“I don’t want to go back,” he repeats, like it’s obvious. “I want to be here with you.”
The music swells again, louder, the bass dropping hard enough that the ground almost shakes.
His hand slides from your wrist to your hand, fingers threading through yours like it’s second nature.
The sun’s starting to dip, everything tinted gold, the air thicker, music bleeding from multiple stages at once. Jake’s somehow acquired another drink, Wes and Javi are mid conversation with a couple of other musicians they’ve met, and Joe gets pulled into it almost immediately.
You don’t even catch all the names, just handshakes, nods, that slightly louder tone people use when they’re trying to be heard and all impressive.
Joe fits into it easily.
A hand on his shoulder, someone saying his name, laughter, a quick “hey, man” and he’s back in it.
But this time, it’s different, you don’t step away.
He drops onto one of the low couches as the conversation builds, leaning forward slightly, elbows on his knees. Someone passes him another drink, and he takes it without really thinking.
You hover for half a second.
Then decide to slide onto his lap like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
There’s the briefest pause in his movement.
Barely noticeable to anyone else, but you feel it.
The way his body stills for half a second, then relaxes instantly as his free arm comes around your waist, pulling you closer without even breaking conversation.
“…yeah, we were in Chicago last month actually,” he’s saying, nodding at something one of the guys says. “It was—”
His hand settles on your thigh.
You lean back slightly against his chest, getting comfortable, your legs angled across his. The position is easy, familiar in a way that makes your chest feel a little too full.
Your fingers find the back of his neck without thinking.
Light at first, just resting there.
He doesn’t react outwardly.
But his thumb shifts slightly against your thigh.
You start tracing slow patterns at the base of his hairline.
Absentmindedly
Joe’s voice dips just slightly mid conversation. Not enough for anyone to call it out, but enough that you notice.
“…yeah, I was sweating so much,” he continues, clearing his throat a little. “Good crowd though.”
Your fingers slide into his hair properly now.
Gentle.
Dragging lightly through the strands at the back of his head.
His grip on your thigh tightens for a second.
Then relaxes again.
You hide your smile by taking a sip of your drink.
“You playing anything new soon?” someone asks him.
Joe nods, shifting slightly beneath you.
His hand moves higher on your thigh this time. His thumb brushing once, slow, like he’s not even thinking about it.
Your breath catches slightly as your fingers press a little more firmly into his hair, nails grazing lightly against his scalp.
He exhales through his nose, almost inaudible.
“Working on some stuff,” he says, voice just a touch rougher now. “Nothing—nothing finished yet.”
You shift slightly in his lap now, adjusting your position.
His hand reacts immediately, steadying you, fingers pressing into your thigh for a second before settling again.
Your hand drifts from the back of his neck to his hair again, brushing it back from where it curls slightly at the nape, slightly damp from the sun.
Joe’s jaw tightens slightly.
Just for a second.
Then he forces himself to focus again, nodding at something Wes says.
“Yeah—no, that makes sense—”
But his hand doesn’t stop moving.
Not really.
His thumb dragging slow lines against your skin. Fingers flexing slightly like he’s grounding himself.
Courtney catches your eye from across the group.
Raises an eyebrow.
Just slightly.
You press your lips together, trying not to smile.
Joe leans back a little now, resting into the couch more fully, pulling you with him. His arm tightens around your waist, anchoring you closer to his chest.
The conversation keeps going around you.
Your fingers slow in his hair, then start again.
He swallows.
“Joe?” someone says, snapping him back.
“Yeah—yeah, sorry,” he replies quickly, blinking once. “What were you saying?”
You tilt your head slightly, close enough now that your lips brush just near his ear when you speak.
“Distracted?”
It’s barely audible.
Just for him.
His hand stills on your thigh completely this time.
For half a second.
Then tightens.
“Not helping baby,” he mutters under his breath.
You smile into your drink.
Then look away.
“Come on. Let’s dance.” You utter.
“Again?”
“Yes, again. That’s why we’re here.” You explain.
You push yourself off of Joe, his hand still lingering on your leg as he looks up to you in confusion.
You don’t entertain it though, you simply brush his hand off and step away.
You pull Courtney away from the circle of conversation, back toward the music, where it’s louder and messier and easier to disappear.
The crowd has grown.
Bodies closer, heat building, people moving like one thing instead of individuals. The bass is heavier now, vibrating through your chest.
Courtney spins once, laughing, pulling you into it.
You follow easily this time.
You don’t even notice him at first.
Just a shift, someone stepping into your space, a presence that wasn’t there before.
“Hey.”
You turn.
And yeah, he’s… attractive.
Sure.
Tall, sunkissed, that effortless festival look like he belongs here. Confident in a way that’s not immediately off-putting.
“Hi,” you say, polite with a tight lipped smile.
“I’ve seen you around,” he says, smiling slightly. “You’re hard to miss.”
Courtney’s eyes flick between you both.
Oh.
You give a smaller smile. “I doubt that.”
“No, seriously,” he insists, stepping a little closer. “You’ve got this whole—” he gestures vaguely, like he’s trying to find the word, “vibe going on.”
You almost laugh.
“Right.”
“I’m serious,” he says, undeterred. “What’s your name?”
You hesitate for half a second.
Not because you’re interested, but caught off guard.
Behind you, Courtney subtly shifts, watching.
You tell him your name anyway.
Because you’re not rude.
He repeats it like he’s committing it to memory. “I’m—”
He tells you his name, but it barely sticks.
Because you’re already half distracted.
He keeps talking.
Asking questions and leaning in slightly. Smiling like he knows exactly what he’s doing.
And you answer, briefly, politely but your attention keeps slipping.
Not to him.
Back toward the seating area.
You don’t realise Joe’s looking until your eyes meet his.
He’s still mid conversation, but he’s not listening anymore.
His gaze is completely fixed on you and the guy standing just a little too close.
“So what are y’all doing later?” the guy asks, drawing your attention back.
You blink. “What?”
“Later,” he repeats, like it’s obvious. “You should come with us. We’ve got a place not far from here.”
Courtney lets out the smallest laugh beside you.
You ignore her.
“Oh, I’m here with friends,” you say simply.
“So bring them.”
You shake your head slightly. “I don’t think so.”
He smiles like that’s part of the game. “Come on. Don’t shut it down that fast.”
You glance past him again.
Joe’s not talking anymore.
He’s watching.
There’s something tight in his expression. His jaw set slightly, shoulders more rigid than before.
He says something quick to the guys, too quick, and then he’s moving.
“Look,” you say, turning back to the guy. “I’m really not interested—”
“You don’t even know me yet.”
“I don’t need to.” You smile back.
Courtney bites back a grin.
“And you’ve got someone?” he presses, glancing around like he’s trying to spot competition.
You hesitate.
Not because you don’t know the answer.
But.
A hand lands at your waist.
“I think she answered you man,” Joe says.
You don’t even need to turn, because you’d know his voice anywhere.
The guy pauses, finally clocking it.
Joe steps in just enough close behind you. His hand stays where it is, fingers pressing slightly into your side like he’s grounding himself as much as you.
“Yeah?” the guy says, raising an eyebrow slightly. “Didn’t realise.” Looking a lot smaller now in comparison to Joe’s frame.
Joe shrugs, casual but there’s an edge now.
“Cool, now you do.” He replies coldly.
Silence hangs for a second.
Then the guy lifts his hands slightly, backing off.
“Alright, man. No problem.”
The guy gives you one last look then disappears back into the crowd.
Courtney exhales dramatically. “That was painful.”
“Courtney,” you warn.
“I’m just saying, he really thought he had a chance.”
You turn slightly, finally facing Joe.
He hasn’t moved his hand.
His eyes flick briefly to where the guy disappeared, then back to you.
There’s something unreadable there, something tighter than before.
“You seriously were gonna let him keep going huh?” he asks.
You frown slightly. “No. I was literally saying no.”
“I heard.”
“Then what’s the problem?” You egg on.
“No problem,” he says, but it doesn’t land right.
You tilt your head. “Joe.”
“What?”
“Stop.” You begin.
“I’m not—”
“You are.”
Courtney quietly steps back. “I’m gonna… go find Jake.”
Neither of you stop her.
The music swells around you again, but it feels distant now.
“What?” he asks.
“If you’re jealous just say so.” You shrug.
“I’m not.”
“You kind of are.” You tease, just trying to frustrate him more.
“I’m not—” he stops, exhaling through his nose slightly. “I just didn’t like it.”
You blink. “Didn’t like what?”
“The way he was talking to you. He was clearly flirting.”
“Okay…” You reply.
You just wanted to get a rise out of him.
You couldn’t help it, the way those girls touched him earlier. It all got to your head.
Joe runs a hand through his hair, pushing it back.
“I don’t know,” he admits finally. “It just—”
He stops again.
Frustrated now.
“It’s just what?” you push, softer.
His hand tightens slightly at your waist.
“Nothing,” he mutters. “Forget it.”
You stare at him for a second.
“No baby…I’m sorry okay.” You begin.
He was clearly upset.
“Hey, let me make it up to you okay.” You whisper into his ear, trying to drag him away from the crowd.
“Baby.” He utters, stopping you. “What’s up with you today?"
You blink. “Nothing.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“That,” he gestures vaguely. “You’ve been… off all day.”
You huff a small laugh, shaking your head. “I’m literally just hungover.”
“Yeah, you were,” he says. “Now you’re not.”
You don’t respond.
Because he’s not wrong.
The noise around you picks back up Jake calling something across the group, Courtney laughing somewhere behind you but it all feels slightly removed.
Joe steps a little closer.
“Talk to me…please" he says, softer, his big puppy eyes clearly showing concern.
You felt like the worst person ever.
Then shrug, looking away. “It’s not a big deal okay.”
“If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t be acting like this.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Neither is you shutting me out,” he replies.
You exhale, rubbing your arm like you suddenly feel exposed.
“It’s just—” you stop, shaking your head. “look don’t worry.”
“Hey,” he says, reaching for your hand.
You let him take it, but you don’t fully relax into it.
“That thing earlier,” he adds. “With those girls, if that’s what this is—”
“It’s not just that,” you cut in quickly.
“Okay,” he nods. “Then what is it?”
You glance around.
Too many eyes that aren’t actually watching but still make it feel like they are.
“Come here,” you say suddenly.
He frowns slightly. “What?”
“Just, come with me.”
You grab his hand properly this time, pulling him away from the group, weaving past people, past the bar, past the edge of the VIP section into the back of all the drink trucks and tents.
Then you turn to him.
He’s already watching you concerned now.
“Okay,” he says. “What’s going on?” He adds trying to search for the answer in your eyes.
You cross your arms instinctively, then uncross them again.
“I don’t like it,” you admit.
“Don’t like what?”
“The way people act with you sometimes,” you say, a little sharper than you meant. “Like earlier, with those girls. And just now. It’s like—”
You gesture vaguely.
“—like I’m not even there half the time.”
Joe’s expression shifts immediately.
“I know it’s not your fault,” you add quickly. “I know that. You’re just being nice. But it’s still—” you exhale, frustrated. “It’s still weird sometimes, I’m trying to get used to it but it just like...”
Then you continue.
“And then that guy,” you continue. “Coming up to me like that, like it’s nothing, and you get all weird about it but with the girls.”
“I wasn’t weird—” He begins.
“You were,” you interrupt. “You didn’t like it.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Okay, but I deal with that all the time when it’s you,” you say, softer now. “And I don’t get to… react like that.”
Joe looks at you for a second, processing.
“You always felt this way?" he asks finally.
You nod looking down at your shoes, avoid his eyes, to which he clearly notices, grabbing your chin with his index finger and moving it up to look at him.
“Hey, I didn’t think about it like that,” he admits, running a hand through his hair. “I just, saw him talking to you and…” he shakes his head slightly. “Didn’t like it. Didn’t even question why.”
Your shoulders drop a little.
“And earlier,” he continues, quieter now, “I should’ve noticed sooner. With those girls. I got pulled in and I just—” he exhales. “I didn’t handle that well.”
“You didn’t do anything wrong Joe,” you say.
“I could’ve done better,” he replies simply.
“I just hate feeling like I have to compete for your attention,” you admit, barely above a murmur.
Joe’s face softens immediately.
“Hey,” he says, stepping closer.
His hand finds yours again. This time, you don’t resist it.
“You don’t,” he says. “At all.”
You look up at him.
“Because I’m already choosing you,” he adds.
“You just… don’t make it obvious sometimes,” you say.
“That’s on me,” he nods. “I can fix that.”
You huff a small laugh. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
He lifts your joined hands slightly, like he’s proving a point.
“Starting with not letting go of you every five seconds.”
You smile a little despite yourself.
“And for the record,” he adds, a little more serious now, “I didn’t like that guy talking to you because I—”
“—because I love you. A lot.”
“Yeah,” you say softly. “I got that.”
Then you tug his hand slightly, stepping closer.
“Come on.”
“Where?”
“Just here,” you say, pulling him a little further into the corner, out of view from the workers in the tents.
He lets you.
Your back brushes lightly against the wall behind you as you stop, still holding onto him.
“Let me show you how much I love you too.” You giggle into his neck in a jokingly tone as you kiss down his neck.

I absolutely loved the Coachella fic ahhh! 💗
omg thank you, it’s my first time writing on here, means the world!! Definitely thinking of writing some other little one shot things <3
coachella- joe keery x reader
hi hi, this is a very random one shot typa thing of just reader and joe being all cute at coachella <3
just fluff and joe being a little protective hehe
(1.4k words)
You weren’t even going to come to Coachella.
Joe had just gotten back from touring South America and both of you swore the next few weeks were going to be quiet.
No crowds.
Just normal life for a bit.
That plan lasted maybe three days.
The first thing you notice about the festival at night is the dust.
It floats through the air almost like glitter every time someone jumps or spins or pushes through the crowd. The lights from the stage catch it, turning everything hazy and gold.
You’re already laughing when you feel hands settle at your waist.
“Careful baby,” Joe murmurs behind you, warm and low near your ear.
“Don’t wanna lose ya.” He adds.
You tilt your head back slightly and glance over your shoulder with a smile, grabbing his free hand that was around you and dragging him further into the crowd.
God, he looks so handsome.
He’s wearing his favourite blue bandana tied tightly around his head, with the ends of his hair sticking out around it like they just refused to cooperate. His pair yellow frames sunglasses are still on his face even though the sun set almost an hour ago. They reflect the neon glow from the stage lights and the giant screens.
He decided on a loose vintage band tee that was slightly cropped, he had bought at some thrift store on tour, riding up whenever he moves and teasing the waistband of his underwear just above his jeans, and a jacket which he definitely brought for you, knowing you decided shorts and a tiny top were a perfectly reasonable desert night outfit.
You never asked for it. But you know it’s yours.
The music from the stage surges suddenly, heavy and loud enough that you feel it in your ribs. The crowd roars instantly.
The pit starts moving before the band even walks out.
Then Turnstile finally runs out on stage and the entire crowd explodes.
It was kinda Joe’s idea after raving about their set at Lollapalooza, you didn’t need much convincing.
The first chord crashes out of the speakers and suddenly everyone is moving.
Bodies jumping and people shouting lyrics.
Dust kicking up everywhere.
You start swaying almost immediately, shoulders rolling with the rhythm, arms lifting slightly when the bass hits harder.
Joe doesn’t move much at first.
He just stands behind you, tall enough that he can see over most of the crowd, one hand loosely around your waist and the other still holding your drink from earlier like it’s his sacred responsibility.
You tip your head back toward him again.
“Admit it,” you shout over the music. “This is good.”
He leans down so his mouth is near your ear.
“Mhm, It’s very loud.” He shouts.
“That’s the point old man.” You reason back.
“I’m thirty-three.” He mutters.
“Mmm yes, your point?” You tease.
He laughs against your hair.
The stage lights flash across the crowd in bursts of white and electric blue.
You keep moving, hips swaying slightly with the rhythm, shoulders loose.
The vodka cranberry you drank earlier has warmed you just enough that everything feels a little floaty, a little brighter.
Joe’s fingers drum absently against your hip in time with the drums, and then he leans down again.
His lips brush the side of your neck.
Not a big thing, just a quick soft press.
You barely notice honestly.
You’re focused on the music, eyes on the stage, mouthing half the lyrics even when you get them wrong.
Joe smiles slightly against your skin.
He does it again a minute later.
Slow and absentminded.
Like he’s not even thinking about it.
Around you, the crowd keeps shifting and people are definitely noticing him now.
It starts with glances, then whispers, then the subtle double takes.
The sunglasses and bandana help a little.
Or maybe not at all.
A group of girls a few feet to your right are absolutely staring.
One of them nudges her friend and says something you can’t hear over the music. Her friend looks over immediately, eyes going wide.
And you both knew this would happen.
You two weren’t exactly good at keeping your relationship a secret, with you being at all his sets.
You knew people were catching on.
And Joe notices the people.
Of course he does.
He gives them a polite tight lipped smile.
Then he looks right back down at you.
The girl tries to wave.
Joe is currently watching the way you’re swaying with the beat like you’re the only thing in front of him.
He lifts your drink slightly.
“You want this?” he asks, tapping your hip twice.
You reach back blindly and take it, taking a quick sip before handing it back again.
“Thank you baby.”
He just kisses your neck in return.
One of the girls nearby leans closer.
“Joe?!”
He glances over briefly.
“Hey,” he says, still friendly.
She looks like she might faint.
“Oh my god, hi.”
He nods politely.
Then immediately looks back down at you again.
The band launches into another song and you grab his wrists suddenly.
“Okay this one’s good.”
“Uh oh.” He now teases, as you jokingly slap his arm in return.
You now tug his arms forward slightly so he’s closer.
Your back presses against his chest now, your head tipping back against his shoulder as you move with the music.
Joe steadies you automatically.
His hands slide from your waist to your hips.
Behind the sunglasses his eyes soften.
Someone else nearby says his name again. But he barely reacts this time.
His attention is completely stuck on the way your hair keeps brushing his jaw when you turn your head.
You bounce lightly in your cowboy boots when the chorus hits.
Joe laughs quietly and bends his head down again.
Another kiss to your neck. Longer this time.
You shiver slightly but keep dancing.
Still oblivious to the girls watching him like he’s the most interesting thing in the entire desert.
One of them edges closer.
“Hi Joe? Can we take a picture?”
He lifts a hand in apology.
“Uh—not right now, sorry. Enjoy the show though." He utters.
Not rude, he just wants to spend time with his girl.
Because you just turned around suddenly, grabbing the front of his shirt.
“Okay, are you actually having fun?”
“Yeah.” He grins.
“Liar.” You mutter with a head shake.
“No, seriously. I love spending time with you anywhere we go. You know that." He explains.
He adjusts the sunglasses slightly with one finger.
"Yeah." You fully turn now looking up at him.
He smiles with a nod back.
You decide to take his sunglasses off his face now, getting a good look at him and his pretty eyes, and place them on your face as you step on your tip toes to press a kiss on his cheek.
You turn back toward the stage again, finishing your drink.
Joe takes the empty cup from you immediately.
“You want another?”
“Maybe later.”
He goes to toss the cup into a nearby bin.
The band is louder now.
Then, the crowd surges again.
Joe steps forward automatically so you don’t get knocked around, one arm wrapping around your middle while the other braces lightly against someone behind him.
It’s protective without being obvious.
You lean back against him again, breathless and smiling.
“You’re doing the bodyguard thing again.”
“Just don’t want anyone stepping on you.” He murmurs.
“Mmm you’re cute when you’re all protective.” You smile up at him.
He chuckles.
Another girl nearby tries again.
“Joe!”
He glances over.
“Hey.”
She’s smiling like she just met a celebrity.
Which she did.
“Your music is so good.”
“Thanks I appreciate it,” he says sincerely.
Then he turns back to you.
You’re dancing again, head tilted back slightly, completely unaware of the entire interaction.
Joe’s smile softens.
He leans down and presses his mouth against your neck again.
This time you notice.
You tilt your head slightly to the side without even thinking about it.
Joe huffs a quiet laugh.
“Yeah?” You hum, eyes still on the stage.
He doesn’t say anything though.
You grab Joe’s hands and pull them around your waist again so he’s holding you tighter.
You turn your head slightly and kiss the corner of his jaw without thinking.
It’s quicker and soft.
Joe freezes for half a second like someone just unplugged his brain.
Then he laughs quietly.
“Okay,” he says.
“What?”
“I definitely like this band now.”
You grin.
