Between The Winds, Between The Waves

So I made a couple of spells and here’s one of them. This spell is for when you’re going through a heatwave and need some rain in your life.

What you need: ☆ a jar or container ☆ a spray bottle ☆ pine needles ☆ rose petals ☆ my original sigil (see at the end) ☆ a marker

What to do: 1. Fill your spray bottle up with water, any type (tap, moon, sun, etc.) 2. Put the rose petals and pine needles into your jar, adding the sigil to the outside of your jar/container 3. Spray into your jar/container with your spray bottle, enough to have a small layer of water to the petals and needles can float. Also this is the time to set your intentions and think of bringing in rain. 4. Leave by a window or somewhere with sunlight

items:

- storm (or rain) water

- freshwater shell (I used an apple snail shell, but a something like a mussel or other shell would work. if you don't have one sub with a saltwater/estuarine shell and see how it goes!)

- Any charm that you can hang, preferably one that invokes imagery/symbolism of water or rain

- 2 more shells (salt or fresh. I used ones with open faces)

- silver bell

- sea glass (blues and greens)

- salt (epsom or sea salt preferred)

- large/medium feather of a water fowl (grey or white preferred)

- clear quartz (optional)

- offering dish (optional, really for presentation and clean up)

prep:

1. Set up the freshwater shell on the offering dish (or table) and keep it stable with a ring of sea glass (optional: single clear quartz or clear sea glass at front).

2. Place the charm in the shell with rope/thread/ribbon draping towards you.

3. Place the silver bell at the "north" of the dish (imagine the dish as a compass) and place your other two shells on either side of it.

4. Put the feather in front of you with the quill end nearest to your dominant hand.

5. Have the salt in a small container you can pinch into.

ritual:

1. Breathe deeply 3 times with eyes closed to center yourself. You can also create a circle or do any other grounding exercises at this time.

2. Make a circle around the inner rim of the offering dish (or table) with the salt and get this meaning across with words: "salt, mineral of the oceans, protector and cleanser"

3. Pick up the feather and stir the energies to the metaphorical north (treat the offering dish like a compass). I did this with my eyes closed as it lessens distractions. You will repeat this action for each cardinal direction and get this meaning across in order:

"I beckon rain from the North, to soak the rich earth"

"I beckon rain from the East, aided by its winds for a swift arrival"

"I beckon rain from the South, as the heat of is your creator, and it is the heat you will abate"

"I beckon rain from the West, as all waters merge and must complete their cycle"

I find it important to use "will" rather than might/should as to bolster the confidence behind your intentions. Feel free to alter and add to this wording as much as you like for it is already loose and use this time to invoke any specific deities or spirits as I did not.

4. Place the feather down gently, breathe, and say "after I have rung this bell 3 times, whenever I hang this charm where the sky can see, it will intice rain for as long as it hangs" (be thoughtful of wording and your intentions here, loopholes are very easy to accidentally create, so set clear parameters that aren't too outrageous)

5. Ring the bell with steady motions. It's important that you get 3 clear rings, so if you try to ring it once but the sound isn't great, try until you have 3 satisfactory chimes.

6. Once you have placed the bell back down, close your circle or breathe to realign any energies.

And that's about it! I tried this today and we got a good spell of rain (with thunder and everything!) even though there was no predictions for it this whole week. I'm hesitant to do a spell for storms as I live in a hurricane-prone region and it's that time of year, but feel free to replace "rain" with "storm" or whatever wording feels specific to what you desire. I kept the wordings here intentionally vague/loose because it's important to use words that you mean something to you.

💧 for those wanting to start out with sea witchery

Firstly a knowledge of the ocean and conservation efforts is essential. Basic books on marine life you can find at a library. For the actual magick part, I incorporate a lot of myths and legends into what informs my practice- sirens, mermaids etc.

🐚 pirate lore has helped me a lot as well with understanding the workings of ships and seafaring. Read up on Captain Kidd, Henry Morgan, Stede Bonnet, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

Now you’re probably like- this sounds lame what do old timey violent pirates have to do with sea witchery. You want to IMMERSE yourself in anything ocean themed. You’ll start seeing the imagery and items that will hold power for you- coins (pieces of eight), treasure chests (magick boxes), the idea of the name and figurehead of a ship being magickal, maps as magickal tools, sea shanties.

🐬Write and incorporate your spells into sea shanties and sing them. Listen to David Coffin for inspiration.

🐬Check out mariner’s knots on Pinterest and practice them. Knot magick is powerful and can be used for a lot.

🐬Lastly, collect shells, sand and sea water. Those are your bases for any spells. I like to grind up shells and use the powder. Shells can be used as spell containers or enchanted as charms. Sea water is used for purifying.

🐬Tap into the element of water. It’s ever changing and fluid. Take lots of baths and meditate. Have a dish with salt next to your bath and chuck in a handful as you run it. I’d suggest making a playlist of ocean sounds, harbor bells to play while meditating. (and cannon fire weirdly works for me too, I live in a coastal city where they fire cannons to tell the time a lot like in the olden days)

🐬Get you an oracle deck with mermaids or sea creatures. I love Magical mermaids and dolphins by Doreen Virtue.

🌊 Learn how to read the sea. Sometimes it looks calm, but it can be storming beneath the surface. Adding to this, keep track of what the local reporters are saying about the sea, rip tides and currents that day.

🌊Sand is a good alternative to salt for cleansing spaces. Best used when you're in places with vegetation, as salt can damage plants. (this is for you landlocked witches! 💖)

🌊Shiny, pearlescent shells are amazing for protection. Reflect and deflect that negativity!

🌊Whatever you take, freely give back. Always give back to the sea if she has given you gifts.

🌊If you ever find yourself feeling strongly pulled to go into the sea, as if you're being lured there, do everything you can to not go. Especially if it is rough or dangerous. The Mer can be mischievous that way

🌊Do your best to save small critters in rock pools from drying out

🌊 Do your best to clean any litter found on the beach, washed up or left behind by people

🌊If you find a hag stone on the beach, you've just been given a very powerful protective talisman. Thank the sea and give back accordingly

🌊At low tide, or as the tides coming in, draw a symbol, word, sigil, (or even make it out of shells and rocks) of your intent, focusing as you do. The tide will charge it and carry it to be manifested. (this is a simple sea spell if you're in need of a quick spell, and you're running low on time and preparation).

🌊Dress accordingly if working at the beach during cold, wet and windy weather conditions. Do not go to the beach during unsafe weather conditions

🌊Beach quartz works just the same as clear quartz, with the added bonus of sea energy. Use it for all the things you'd use quartz for. Treasure and respect it.

Water Worship/Meditation

(This is done after you’ve finished cleaning yourself. Do not wash your body or hair after because it can disturb the flow of ‘power’ you’ve been given as a thanks from the element, deity, goddess and to wash yourself might seem rude as if you are washing away their gift)

Sea Witches are witches that mostly work with the ocean and its energy. You don’t need to be near an ocean to be a sea witch. Sea witches work with water (duh), salt, sea spirits, and anything with a water correspondence really.

Keep a conch shell in your home so you can listen to the ocean when you need it

Keep jars of ocean water by your bed so you can be empowered by the sea

Decorate your altar with sea shells and sea glass

Wear blues and greens

Carry around a turquoise to harness the power of water

Place a jar of sand on your altar

Fall asleep to the sound of waves to feel connected to the sea

Stand in front of the sea or a large body of water, allowing the sounds of the waves to calm your mind.

Pick up a rock you are drawn to from the sand and hold it in your hands.

Take a moment to think about the emotions or things you want to let go of, visualising all the negative energy going into this rock. Say these things out loud if you need.

Look back at the water once you’ve finished. Hold the rock tight in your hands and say mentally or out loud

“All that is negative, all that saddens me, I banish you now to the bottom of the sea, may the saltwater waves carry them away, this is my will so mote it be”

(This can be altered depending on your situation)

Throw the rock into the water as far as you can and watch it hit the water. Take a deep breath and clear your mind. Imagine the sea washing away what you want to let go, swept away to the bottom of the sea.
