wow, I cannot believe that they finally added it... It's still 8-bit 4:2:2, but it's definitely better than nothing! I'm thrilled to have the option of using an external recorder to go straight to ProRes. Nevertheless, it's very cool to see Canon adding a feature that is so incredibly necessary after much request...

Light Iron - Liveplay & Todailies Review

If you don't already know Light Iron, than I'm surprised that you're reading this blog...

The great folks over at Light Iron have created two applications for the iPad that are both not only useful, but practical, easy to use and affordable. Coming in at a modest $9.99 each in the app store, Liveplay can be used to stream h.264 on set to any iPad connected to the internet, and Todailies can be used to not only do the same, but to save those h.264 files to the iPad itself for review, and then subsequent shot selection and .xml email for things such as client/director shot selection, etc... I have done a ton of testing, all I can really say is that I am in love. It doesn't try to do more than it should, and it does everything that it says it does well, plus on top of that it also utilizes Light Iron Server to push the videos out over your network, which is also a free application. Amazing.

Pro tip: if you're a RED guy, don't use RedCine to create the h.264s for this, Chris over at LightIron suggested using watch folders in Adobe Media Encoder to automatically transcode h.264s off of transcodes pushed out of RedCine, absolutely brilliant! Thanks Chris!
