The Joy of Dirt Racing
I interviewed Fletcher Marks on a video of the heat race last year of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree and his impressions on the race and the cars were “ The cars were cool, they had cool body work which made them even better to watch”. One of the last things he said was that the “racing was thrilling to watch because of all of the slidejobs and the way they all ran their line trying not to crash their expensive cars into each other”. It was a fresh new perspective to the sport which made me happy because when I first watched it I had the exact same reaction. The sport is about money, talent, love for the sport and lastly just having a good time because if you don’t have a good time racing or watching the races you are just wasting money.
One thing I love about the sport is that it can be anybody's night if they play all of their cards right like having the right setup, having the pressure in the tires right, having a good night by the driver and not making small mistakes and also playing by the rules. Because if you cheat once it will take a while to get people to forget it.
A big part of the sport is the friendship of drivers, crewmembers and the fans. They all hope that their driver wins of course, but even if they dont they say well they tried their best and they still support that driver and crewmembers . A big thing about the friendship is for example my dad, he traveled with these USMTS guys all over the country and whenever they come back to Deer Creek he always makes sure to go see them and see if they need any help with the car because they know that they can trust him.
Another big part of this type of racing is the track. The track one night can be slick and everybody is throwing slide jobs and the racing is crazy and thrilling and then the next night the track and be tacky and people have to find the right line and have the best set- up for the most speed.
Another thing I enjoy about the sport is the different cars you have a B- mod and an A-mod , then you have a sprint car,winged and non- winged and lastly of the big ones is my favorite, the late models. All of these cars do the same things at different speeds and with different looks
The last thing I will say is the amazing traditions like lining up 4 wide and giving thanks to the men and women that serve our country. Another big part in the tradition is sometimes they will have a prayer before the race for the drivers, their familys the crewmembers and also everybody watching.
