Did Dirk Gently just bring his pizza box with him in episode one?
Did Amanda invite him into the house like a socially awkward psychic vampire and he went yes, another potential friend, thank you universe, just let me retrieve my cold pizza from my shiny new Corvette and eavesdrop on your personal conversations.
He never knows when heâll have access to food again so if thereâs leftovers heâll carry them around with him until theyâre gone
This is even better though.
Because Patrick Spring paid him enough that heâs buying multiple ÂŁ850 leather jackets, and yet his experiences with Blackwing were still traumatic enough that he hoards food like heâs about to go into hibernation for the winter.
Whyda have to go an make a sweet post angst?
Have you met me?
I have a headcanon that Todd sometimes has to stop Dirk from eating expired food, and that at first Todd is really annoyed by it because he thinks Dirk just isnât paying attention when he eats. Itâs only later that Todd realizes Dirk eats everything around him because Dirk has lived through experiences in which he genuinely feared he would starve to death, like being homeless for many years, or punished in Blackwing by being deprived of food for days, and then Todd just feels heartbroken about it. He then makes a much more consistent effort to make sure the kitchen in the detective agency is absolutely overflowing with food to eat.
Heâs pretty sure knowing he wonât have to worry about where heâs going to find food next makes Dirk feel a lot safer, even if Dirk doesnât talk about it much.
Or Dirk doesnât believe in expiration dates.
Heâs eaten so much rancid food while homeless/peckish that he has the stomach stronger than a nuclear bunker, âA bit of fur on the bread wonât kill me! Adds flavour!â he says, scarfing a slightly green bacon butty. Todd hates it, with his privileged upbringing who has never eaten anything but the purest, whitest of white bread and here is a man with a bag of apples on the sell-by date Lord help me-
