Rick forgot his running gear for the 5K. But a real man just deals, so he stripped off his suit and went for it.
For people who like clothes swaps, here goes:
Borrowed Time
Brad had been an accountant for eleven years, and in eleven years the most dangerous thing that had ever happened to him was a client audit that ran into a second box of donuts. So when he walked into Suite 411 for what his day planner called a "quarterly reconciliation meeting" with a client he'd never actually met in person — just a name and a suite number scrawled in pencil, the way most of his meetings got booked — he had no reason to expect that the room would go quiet the second he closed the door behind him, or that four men with badges and holstered weapons would exchange a look that clearly meant this wasn't supposed to happen yet.
One of them — a tired-looking man named Reyes — stepped forward first, introduced himself as a federal agent, and then immediately apologized for it. It took him less than two minutes to explain that Brad had wandered into the exact meeting a two-year investigation had been built around, half an hour before the man he actually resembled was supposed to walk through that same door.
"You mean I look like a mob guy," Brad said, mostly to see if saying it out loud would make it make sense. It didn't.
"You look like a guy a mob guy is expecting," Reyes said. "There's a difference. A small one. We'd like to use it."
What they wanted, it turned out, was his suit. Not him — an agent named Mike, who was standing off to one side with the specific stillness of a man trying not to make this weirder than it already was. Same build, close enough hair color, good enough bone structure that with Brad's exact tie and Brad's exact jacket, he could walk into that meeting instead and nobody six feet away with bad lighting and worse expectations would think twice. There was no photo of the real client on file anywhere — just a physical description, a name, and whatever the guy on the other side of that door remembered from one prior handshake. That was the whole plan. That was all it needed to be.
"You'd be doing this completely voluntarily," Reyes said. "You're not a suspect. You're not in trouble. You're — honestly, you're doing us a favor, and the government's going to compensate you for your time."
"My time doing what, exactly?"
"Mostly waiting," Reyes admitted. "In your underwear. In a warehouse. For a few hours."
Brad looked at Mike. Mike looked back at him with the expression of a man who understood exactly how this sounded and had decided not to apologize for it, because apologizing wouldn't help either of them.
"Okay," Brad said. "But I want to see how this works. The whole switch. I've never seen anything like this happen before."
Mike looked him over once, unhurried, the way a tailor might. "Forty-four long, right?"
"...Yeah," Brad said, and something about hearing it said out loud — correctly, easily, like Mike had done this a hundred times — was the moment it actually landed. Not the meeting, not the agents, not the word warehouse. Just that. I guess I'm about to lose my suit right now.
The undressing, when it happened, didn't feel like the ominous thing it might have looked like from outside. It felt more like two guys getting ready for the same job interview, except one of them was borrowing the other one's clothes for it. Brad worked his tie loose while Mike stood a few feet away doing the math on shoe size, and somewhere in the middle of it they started actually talking — about how long Mike had been doing this kind of work, whether this was Mike's strangest assignment yet.
Brad pulled the tie the rest of the way off over his head and held it out. "Sits a little crooked, sorry — it's new. Nervous tic."
"Good, means it'll look natural on me," Mike said, taking it, and Brad laughed for the first time since walking into the building.
The jacket and shirt came off easily enough — those felt almost incidental, just fabric, nothing Brad thought twice about handing across. The pants took a beat longer, belt undone, stepped out of, folded on reflex even though there wasn't any point, and handed to Mike while two other agents kept doing paperwork by the door without looking over. Nobody made anything of it, so neither did he.
By the time Mike had the jacket on, shirt re-tucked, tie re-knotted properly this time, Brad found himself doing something he hadn't expected — looking at the guy standing in his exact clothes and feeling a strange, low-grade admiration. Huh. You actually wear this better than I do. He didn't say it out loud, but something like pride crept in anyway, absurd as that was.
The one thing that didn't work out was the shoes. Mike's feet were a size and a half bigger than Brad's, and after a minute of Mike wincing his way halfway into one black dress shoe, they both gave up on it without either of them having to say so.
"So I'm walking in there in these," Mike said, glancing down at his own boots — scuffed at the toe, laces gone soft with age, nothing like the rest of him now.
"That's going to be the thing that blows it," Brad said. "Not the face. The boots."
Mike considered this for a second, then shrugged, unbothered. "Nah. I forgot my dress shoes this morning, that's the story. Guy's in a hurry, guy's got a lot on his mind, guy didn't check his own feet before he left the house. Nobody in that room's going to be looking below the knee." He rolled his shoulders once, settling into the jacket. "They'll be looking at the tie. The tie's perfect."
Brad huffed something like a laugh, mostly out of nerves. "Confidence. I respect it."
Since the shoes weren't going anywhere, Brad laced his own black dress shoes back on over his dress socks — no point letting a perfectly good pair sit unused in the corner — which left him in an odd, half-finished state: shoes and socks like any other workday, everything above the ankle down to an undershirt and boxers.
He handed over his briefcase last. "Try not to lose the good pen," he said. "It's my lucky one. Don't ask me why, it just is."
"Wasn't planning on losing anything of yours," Mike said, taking it with a small, easy smile.
Brad clapped a hand on his shoulder before he could think better of it, and left it there a beat longer than a send-off really required — one guy in a full suit, one guy standing there in his underwear, and neither of them in any hurry to be the one who stepped back first. "You look great," Brad said, quieter than he meant to. "Go knock 'em dead."
"We'll get your suit back in about three hours," Mike said, and flashed him a small grin, then turned businesslike again, and was gone.
That left Brad in a mostly-empty warehouse room in his undershirt, boxers, dress socks, and his own black dress shoes, holding a folded blanket someone had handed him without much ceremony, and it left Reyes with a problem: they needed Brad kept somewhere safe and occupied, for at least three hours, without his own clothes anywhere near him. Nobody said it directly, but the concern was obvious enough — a bored guy in his underwear with a window nearby was a guy who might decide to test whether the window opened.
Reyes lingered in the doorway a second longer than he needed to. "Hey — what'd you want for lunch?"
Brad blinked at him. Somehow, out of everything that had happened in the last twenty minutes, this was the part that didn't quite compute. "You're asking me what I want for lunch."
"Gotta eat," Reyes said, like it was obvious.
So Brad gave him an order — nothing complicated, just what he'd have gotten on any normal Tuesday — and Reyes wrote it down on the back of a folder without any particular ceremony, like this was just one more line item in an otherwise enormous operation. It struck Brad, standing there half out of his own clothes, that somewhere in a building full of federal agents running a two-year investigation, someone had still stopped to ask if he wanted mustard. It was such a small thing. It was, weirdly, the thing that made him feel like he was going to be fine.
"We'll get you company too," Reyes added, already halfway out the door. "Least we can do."
The company turned out to be an agent named Sam — dark hair, easy grin, the kind of guy who looked like he'd rather be doing this than filing paperwork somewhere. He showed up twenty minutes later with a paper bag that turned out to have a genuinely excellent sandwich in it, dragged two beat-up chairs into a patch of window light, and sat down across from Brad like they were on a lunch break instead of on either side of a federal operation.
"They tell you I'm basically your babysitter for the next three hours?" Sam said, not unkindly.
"They implied it," Brad said, unwrapping the sandwich. "This is really good, by the way."
"Don't tell anyone the government sprang for good bread. It'll ruin my reputation."
Sam glanced over as Brad reached for the sandwich again, and something in his expression paused for half a second longer than it needed to. "You lift?" he asked, nodding at Brad's upper body. "Jacked accountant. Feels like a plot twist."
"Some," Brad said, and felt his ears go warm before he'd even decided to be embarrassed about it. "Nothing serious. Just — you know. Gym stuff."
"Well, it's working." Sam said it easily, already moving on, reaching for his own half of the conversation like he hadn't noticed the flush at all — though the small, unhurried smile said otherwise.
Brad busied himself with the sandwich and didn't say anything else about it, but the compliment sat there pleasantly for a minute anyway, the way an unexpected one does.
They talked — about nothing, mostly, the way you do with a stranger you've been thrown together with. Brad found himself laughing more than he expected to, all things considered, at a story Sam told about an entirely different stakeout that had gone sideways in a much dumber way than this one. Somewhere around the second half of the sandwich, Brad realized he'd stopped thinking about the fact that he was sitting there in his underwear at all. It wasn't that different, really, from standing around a locker room after a pickup game, half-dressed and talking about nothing in particular while somebody laced up their shoes — the kind of easy, unbothered thing guys did around each other all the time without anyone making it weird. Sam clearly wasn't making it weird, so neither was he.
It occurred to Brad, somewhere in there, that this was objectively one of the stranger afternoons of his life, and also, somehow, one of the more fun ones. Nobody back at the office was ever going to believe this. He wasn't sure he'd even be allowed to tell them the real version.
"So what happens when he comes back?" Brad asked eventually.
"You get your suit back, you get a ride home, and you get a debrief that's mostly them asking you to sign something," Sam said. "And then, best case, you never hear from any of us again."
"Worst case?"
"Worst case, you're one of the cooler stories anyone at your firm's ever heard, and you can't tell it to any of them for another few years."
Brad laughed at that, actually laughed, and thought — not for the first time that afternoon — that whatever this was supposed to be, it hadn't turned out anything like the situation it could have been. Just two guys, a sandwich, and a long, strange wait for one of them to come back safe.
This actually seems kind of cool, he thought, and let himself mean it.
Six months later, Brad was at a dive bar a few blocks from his office, halfway through a beer after a long week, when the door opened and two guys walked in laughing about something that had clearly happened earlier that day. It took him a second — out of context, out of the suit, out of everything — before it clicked.
"No way," he said, before he could stop himself.
Mike clocked him first, then Sam, and for a second all three of them just stood there grinning like idiots.
"Small world," Sam said, sliding onto the stool next to him like it hadn't been six months. "Still got that lucky pen?"
"Wouldn't leave home without it," Brad said, and waved down the bartender for two more.
Jake didn't realize until it was far too late that the rest of his schedule would be totally shot while he waited, and waited, for the doctor.
