Just think - Luna was never a bit loopy like we thought she was. - Just think because in The Order of the Phoenix she tells Harry why only her and him can see that invisible creature that pulled their carriage. She's says "only people who've known death can see them" If you think about it every time she tells Harry why she can see an invisible creature it usually has some unhappy reason behind it. In other words, a lot of the time the only reason why you can see certain creatures no one else can is because you've been through tragic losses, traumatic events good but mostly bad, and basically seen and been through unhappy things that others haven't ever known. If you think about it, it means Luna has been through and seen more unhappy things that hardly anyone can fathom or understand. Which would explain why she always sounds so deeply sad when she's explaining to Harry and how she always knows answers no one else her age can answer. Sometimes even adults. It also explains why she tends to understand more of why some people do mean things towards another and why she always knows what to do or say in an unhappy situation. Such as comforting someone after the death of a loved one. And explains why she always chooses to be around her invisible creatures more than people and doesn't have a lot of actual friends... And it's because she accepts being different more than anyone cares to want to learn the reason behind why she can see them but they can't. Which she's clearly well aware of. It also explains why Luna and Harry became such good friends..because he was one of the only few people who wanted to know all of the real reasons behind why she can see them. Each creature she can see is basically one unhappy event she's seen or been through, it's one event of the many in her life basically. A few in which even Harry can relate to...
