In my collages, I recombine photographic images that I cut out from magazines. My goal is to create new, unexpected and somewhat strange images. Rather than presenting a clearly defined narrative, I hope to evoke the sense of bewilderment, dread and fear that accompany feeling trapped by circumstances beyond one’s control. Whether the constraints we all commonly experience are real or perceived, they cause endless misery, and are inevitably difficult to overcome. I recognize that my collages invite open-ended interpretation, particularly because by selecting images of enigmatic figures in ambiguous situations, I take the focus off of individuals. Moreover, I always choose images where the face is hidden or masked. My emphasis is on bodily expression, which I find to be just as psychologically powerful as what is revealed in a facial expression.
