Summary:
“So… how is it?” Joji asked.
“Fine.” Brian said, pulling his arms lightly against the binds that tied his arms to the bed. “It’s comfortable.”
“Good.” Joji replied, petting Brian’s hair before taking the equipment out. A pair of nipple clamps, two vibrators, and a candle.
Brian dreaded the candle the most, honestly. Mostly because burn-related pains weren’t his strong suit, but of course, he agreed to trying this out because where else could he be doing this but in bed with his beloved freaky boyfriend? Seriously. There was some whole world out there that Brian had been missing out on and Joji was apart of it. The candle was also scented— at least he’ll smell good after getting burnt up.

He was an ex from a lifetime ago. They tend to resurface when they think there's something in it for them.
When you're famous there's always something to take.
@clockhard: I wonder if whoever is dating @sushitrash now ever gets sad that he's STILL writing songs about me
It really should've gone unnoticed - but the Internet works in mysterious ways, and it garnered 120k likes in an hour. Joji was so private it almost felt wrong witnessing someone claiming him, even if it was in the past.
For the same reasons it went viral, it also worked it's way onto Brian's fyp. He almost scrolled past it.
Almost.
The boy smirked. He often did when he scrolled, a constant "if only they knew" at the front of his brain. Later he will wonder why he did it, but today he decided to let them know.
Quote tweet:
@richbrian: nah, bitter fuck is one of my favorites 🙏🏼
Send.
Brian didn't even know who this fucker was and really he didn't care. It was funny. The reaction was instant.
BRIAN???
NOT THE 🙏🏼
JOJI/BRIAN CONFIRMED
cleared tbh
Elite joji ball knowledge
The ringing of his phone was more delayed.
"Hello?"
"What did you do." It was more statement than question. Joji knew exactly what he did.
"Cleared him, according to Twitter."
A pause.
"Honestly, yeah."
The line went dead, as was Joji's way. Brian scrolled on, until the notification popped up.
@sushitrash just posted!
Brian snickered. This was going to be fun.
It was a simple qrt of his reply:
@sushitrash: hard launch ig.
The ex was quick to reply to Brian.
@clockhard: @richbrian sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.
Brian scrunched his nose. Ew, this guy isn't even funny.
@richbrian: @clockhard dick usually but looking at this thread will help
DAMN HE SAID DICK TO SLEEP
joji got NyQuil dick
Brian liked that one.
@sushitrash: @richbrian @clockhard please respect mine and joji jr's privacy at this time 🥀
the 🥀 is sending me
WHO IS JOJI JR
did they name his dick after him???
@richbrian: @sushitrash excuse me his name is Steve it's like you don't know me at all
STEVE NATION STAND UP
may this exact relationship find me someday 🙏🏼
WHO IS STEVE
do they have a kid???
@sushitrash: @richbrian how did my dick end up as collateral damage
@richbrian: @sushitrash structural* damage. Steve is load bearing.
THE DOUBLE ENTENDRE
load bearing is insane
OH MY GOD????
Brian's phone rings again.
"Steve and I are coming over."
"Bet, hope Steve's got loads."
A long pause. Joji sighs heavily.
"Yes, but no. No, I hated that never say that again."
"C-can I just call you Nick or is the Fat part of it?"
George barked out a laugh before he could stop himself. "Oh she's quick! We just met this morning and she's already bullying you Nick."
"We were in the studio for like 10 hours," Brian said.
"That's legally still morning," George replied.
August stumbled over. "Y'all cute already," he slurred. Y/n choked on her drink.
George grinned. "Chill chill, we just met, I'm trying to behave."
"This is you behaving?" y/n laughed. "That's concerning."
His smile faded when he saw Nick sneering at her in his peripheral. Nick took y/n's hand in his.
"You're a new one," Nick drawled, already drunk. "Joji switching aesthetics again?"
"Yeah man, I'm rebranding."
"She's Midnight Mafia," Brian cut in, proudly.
Nick blinked. "No fucking way, her?"
He said it like it was a downgrade.
"Yes, me, but you can just call me y/n please." She tugged her hand away but Nick did not let go. George took a slight step between them.
"Alright man."
"Relax," Nick said, finally dropping y/n's hand to hold his own up in mock surrender. He looked back to y/n. "You know who I am?"
"No, I'm sorry."
Don't apologize, George thought to himself.
"I'm a YouTuber, like Joji here. I rap too." Nick brought a hand up to smooth his hair, intentionally flashing his Rolex in her face.
"Oh cool, what kind of content?"
"Pranks mostly, more sophisticated than your man's sad boy pivot."
Nick leaned closer. “Wonder if you wanna be in a prank video?"
George smiled first, then leaned in at Nick.
"She's not content."
George settled his hand more firmly at y/n's lower back.
"Me and y/n are going to get drinks," he announced. "Brian?"
Brian was not listening. He was fixated on someone across the room. Cute boy, nice cheekbones and a silver chain. Brian leaned toward George. "Who is that?"
George followed his gaze. "Ah, you're cooked."
Brian straightened his jacket and walked in the boy's direction.
y/n watched him go. "Is he..?"
"Very." George said.
Across the room, Brian introduced himself. The boy smiled.
"Liz."
Brian blinked. "Short for..?"
"Just Liz."
George leaned closer to y/n. "Well, there goes our third wheel."
Liz laughed at something Brian said.
Y/n smiled. "Good for him."
George nodded. "He is not subtle."
--
"So like, no offense if he's your friend but what is Nick's problem?"
It was so loud in the VIP that they had to sit next to each other to be heard.
"He's not my friend. He's just... around. We have a lot of mutuals but he's been really fucking weird from the start. It's like he's pissed at me for all the Frank stuff...I don't know."
She nodded. "You get that a lot, I bet. From the pivot? Fans hate change, in my experience."
"Most are cool with it but it's like they can't let go. I don't need them to forget but I need them to move on."
"I get it. They think they know who you are so how could you be anything but that for the rest of your entire life?"
He tried to joke. "Frank keeps crawling out of the basement."
She smiled, but he didn't.
"Sometimes, not often, but sometimes I wish I'd never done it."
The joke dropped, fully.
"I don't know if you know this but I used to be in a band," she said. "That's how I got famous, I guess. When I started producing and people found out it was me they acted like I abandoned them for doing something else. They had no idea..."
He listened to her trail off. His curiosity got the best of him.
"What happened on your tour?"
Y/n paused. George thought he'd upset her, the way her big brown eyes widened at the question. It was just a flash of emotion before they changed and it felt like he was being studied. His mouth opened, then shut. He didn't know what to say.
"It's a bit of a trauma dump, I don't want to yell it here. But I'll tell you later if you really want to know," she said after a long beat.
"Okay. No pressure."
Barney appeared out of nowhere. "Brian wants to go to an afters. Y'all in?"
George glanced at her. "We're good. Studio tomorrow."
She looked at him.
"Responsible era," he added.
"I like it."

georgie🎣: you want me to call you
georgie🎣: keep you awake?
y/n: yeah I'd like that actually
--
"You narrate your life like a podcast," he told her as she described traffic.
She gasped. "You are so mean."
"We're on episode 47."
"Rude."
He smiled into the phone. "I like it."
There was a small quiet after that.
"I know you think the collab we're all working on is forced," she said carefully.
"W-what?" he stuttered. "No, it's..I-.."
He sighed.
"It's label politics, not you. Or the guys. I love them."
"Okay."
Another silence.
He almost apologized when she blurted, "I'm so sorry the silence wasn't dramatic I have to make a really scary left turn and I was low key freaking out but I'm also on the phone so I didn't want you to hear me panic but then I thought well he's gonna hear when I crash anyway and when I turned my head I realized I could smell you from your jacket and it was a really comforting and nice smell then suddenly the traffic broke and I turned and it was like kismet. I was not upset."
He laughed. "So the cigarette smell helped you turn?"
Brian, August and Barney came in complaining. It was partially about the door, but mostly about George not responding to their repeat attempts to get the code from him. The steady stream of insults at their friend stopped when they noticed y/n.
Y/n had been hired by 88 to produce this collaboration after they acquired the beat. Usually a beat sale happened passively, so y/n was surprised when her manager Haitao told her they wanted to also buy her time in the studio.
She was familiar with everyone but Barney, but only a little bit. Drew, her band mate and producing partner (when they were a duo), had caught her up to speed on Joji/Filthy Frank. He was weird, with a diverse portfolio.
Brian was young, and y/n felt drawn to him immediately. He was also the loudest, and the quickest to get them all focused back to task. When the introductions were done and y/n presented what she had so far, they all began freestyling at once, with Brian managing the flow.
Hopscotch ended up being the song born that day. y/n didn't question the direction, but was entertained the entire session. August and Barney got their vocals done quickly, while Joji and Brian stayed huddled in the corner. Their laughter over whatever they were writing was a constant.
--
"Come out with us, Midnight."
"Oh my God Brian please do not call me that."
The men all snickered. "Why do you keep the name if you hate it so much?" George asked.
"Because Thomas Bangalter gave it to me and it feels like disrespectful not to keep it," she huffed.
George's jaw dropped. The others looked at him in confusion. "Who's that?" Brian asked.
"Daft punk named you? I get it." George slammed his back into his chair in disbelief. He wanted to ask more but Brian and Barney were back to begging y/n to hang out. It had been a long day, and he wanted nothing more than to go back to his hotel - but he was curious about her. All day they had attempted to finish their fishing talk. But beyond that, he was fascinated by this little goth girl who made the nastiest beats and was a beast at the board. She was so soft spoken but assertive, like she wasn't sure about anything but her music.
"Georgie, are you coming out?"
Her voice interrupted his thoughts. That simple little 'Georgie' cut through all logic and he found himself saying "yes."
"Yay."
Another flip in his stomach. Weird.
--
George exhaled his cigarette smoke into the alleyway. Kenny heard it over the phone as a sigh and laughed again.
"I'm not down bad. I just know myself. She's interesting."
"She is, bro. Super interesting lore. No Filthy Frank or anyth-"
"Shut the fuck up."
"I'm kidding. But she's deep in music man, like you. I'm not gonna talk you out of it."
"She got a boyfriend?"
George cursed himself for asking. It was a line he didn't want to admit he was crossing.
"No clue," Kenny replied. "I really don't know her that well. We just presented together at NAMM last year."
The call ends after that. He'd been outside long enough, aware that he had left y/n alone with whatever Brian had them up to. The kid had brought them to a restaurant that felt more like a nightclub, even though he wasn't old enough to drink. George would do what he always did: buy the kid a drink to nurse the whole night so he didn't feel the sting of the difference. Nothing more.
He made his way to their little corner of the VIP, where August threw a heavy arm over his shoulders and he saw y/n and Brian leaning into each other. It seemed important, whatever they were talking about - but Brian jumped at the sight of George.
"Lemme get a cigarette man," Brian whined.
"I just came from outside..."
"You dont have to go too, just lemme get one. Me and y/n got stuff to talk about."
George didn't like the grin that spread across Brian's face. It occurred to him that he didn't know how old y/n was. Was she young like Brian? Was she interested in him? He fixed his brow before the furrow could be noticed.
"I can go back out"
__
George handed Brian a cigarette and watched him light it. He didn't really want to smoke again, but he didn't know what else to do. He popped one in his mouth and offered the pack to y/n, who shook her head.
"Don't smoke huh?" He said, with the cigarette dangling from his lips. She stared at it and he wondered if she was worried he was going to drop it. He noticed her empty hands. "Dont drink?"
"Oh, I definitely do. I'm just running on fumes as it is."
He noticed her shivering. LA weather was mild, especially compared to New York, but her black tee and jeans were obviously not cutting it. George pulled off the bomber he wore over a hoodie and handed it to y/n.
"I'm okay Georgie, really."
There it was again.
"I'm wearing two and you're vibrating. Take it."
Brian laughed at the mention of vibration, as George predicted he would. Brian then laughed at how big the jacket sat on y/n. There was a fat joke in there somewhere, but George was preoccupied with a different vision of how y/n swam in his clothes.
"Anyway, y/n," Brian said. "Finish what you were saying about touring."
"I just..." y/n was hesitating, and George caught her glance his way. Maybe he was intruding, but she continued before he could make a decision about it. "I worry about you because I went on my first tour young too. I was 14."
"Daaaaaaamn...." Brian said, and George raised his eyebrows in response.
"My whole band was young, Keaton was the oldest at 16. Not a single adult looked out for us and everything bad that happened we were told was normal. They gaslit us and it fucked us up bad."
George's jaw clenched.
"Enjoy yourself, but be so careful. And if it feels wrong, it is. Okay?"
Brian nodded. George wondered if he was really going to heed her warning. "I'll keep him safe," he offered. Y/n smiled and squeezed his forearm. She looked relieved, and it made George wonder even more intensely what had happened to her.
--
Suddenly there were arms around them and voices. George recognized one right away, much to his dismay.
Fat Nick.
The addition of the rapper and his entourage in their little group outside had pushed y/n into George's side. She was still holding his arm, and he instinctively placed a hand at the small of her back to steady her. Y/n caught his eye again and smiled.

I've never written a fan fic before but joji tags are kinda dry so... bear with me
no tws so far and it might be slow burn idk idk
joji: give me a reason to hate this girl immediately
Kenny 🥁: lol who??
joji: you know who
joji: the midnight Mafia
Kenny 🥁: oh shit
Joji picked up the call on the first ring. Kenny was already laughing.
"Brother please, I need you to convince me not to crush on her," George "Joji" Miller lamented to the voice on the other line.
"I can't, man, she's pretty cool. What got you down so bad?" A pause for the realization.
"Wait, you just met her this morning didn't you??"
Earlier that day
George walked into the studio early. It was a light traffic day for LA, something he and his Uber driver weren't prepared for so he ended up arriving embarrassingly ahead of the rest of the group. It was a private, rented-out-permanently kind of studio, so all he needed was the key code for the door to get in. He figured he could get settled and order coffee before the guys and their mystery producer arrived.
Before he could extract the code from his email, a text from his friend - also a producer - popped up.
Kenny 🥁: yo you in a session with midnight today?
joji: yeah how'd you know
Kenny 🥁: ran into her last night, she mentioned it. you'll like her she's fuckin chill. and weird. like you.
Her. Interesting. Not that it mattered, music is music. But George didn't find himself working with women on the production side very often. Plus, he knew Midnight Mafia's beats went extra hard - he'd spent more than a few scrolls in their, or her, ASCAP catalog.
He punched in the code and the door pushed open automatically, with a heavy hydraulic swing that caused him to side step awkwardly to avoid getting clocked by it.
"Fuck, I'm so sorry...," a soft voice called out to him as he stumbled. "There's usually a sign warning people that it opens outward but the cleaning people keep removing it."
George felt a hand grip at his bicep, attempting to correct him before he fell, but he's got it. He hates being touched like that but the gesture is kind and his usual gruffness stays below the surface. The girl lets go when she realizes he's fine.
"Sorry, my bad, didn't want you to fall," she says, walking back into the darkness of the studio so he will follow. "I'm y/n, good to meet you." She sits at the board, leaving the other chair to him and holding out her hand in greeting.
George takes her offered hand, a second touch, but he doesn't sit. "Hi I'm George. You, uh, the Midnight Mafia?"
The girl winces at the title. "Yeah, yeah I am but please, call me y/n, it's so much less awkward." She pauses, then laughs. "George, Joji...I get it. I don't know why I didn't get it before."
"What do you mean?"
"Joji is Japanese for George. It was so obvious."
"You speak Japanese?"
y/n shakes her head. "No no, not really. I lived there for like 9 months and learned a little bit through osmosis, but I'm generally horrible at speaking and understanding it. I'm okay at reading it though."
George is intrigued, as he always is at Americans who have spent any time in his home country. "Where did you live?"
"Well," she laughs, "we started out like amateurs in Akihabara, which is very cool if you want to shop, but it was a lot for me. Like, I'm born and raised in dirty ass Los Angeles and it was still too much city for me. So after about two weeks we went south. It was much more chill."
His eyebrow raised. "Where south?"
"Um, Suminoe-ku? Nanko... in Osaka. I liked it better there, though I might be biased because it was a lot cheaper and really close to Universal Studios."
Neither of them had noticed George's phone lighting up in his hand.
"What did you like about Osaka?"
To this, y/n laughed. "Honestly, it's very random, but my producing partner who I was there with, Drew - he had a crush on this girl who had a big fishing family. One day he comes home and tells me we're going fishing, so we ended up going like 3 times. I was so bad at it but it was actually a lot of fun."
"No shit..."
"Yeah! My only complaint is that the locals did not want to teach me how to gut or clean the fish. Like they were adamantly against it. I really wanted to, though."
George nodded. "They definitely wouldn't be into teaching an American girl that."
"Yeah I figured, so I didn't insist on it too much."
He smiled, sitting down in the chair next to hers and leaning towards her. "I'm from Osaka, actually. I know that district well."
Y/n looks shocked and excited. "Oh no way..."
"Yeah I fucking love fishing. I could teach you the rest, it's really just about the right knife."
"Sir, I just met you but I would absolutely let you take me out on the water with a variety of knives, that is so cool."
Her tone is light but he can tell she's so serious.
Something about the way she called him "sir" and the light in her eyes makes his stomach do flips that it hasn't done since high school. He doesn't know what to say next, but it doesn't matter anyway.
The moment is over just as quickly as it started, because Rich Brian is wrestling with the door and cursing George out for not looking at his phone.
