Dimitra and the Silver Mask

I had considered moving on to do a quick profile on the deermen of Bursaat this week, but my head is still in Talamarkan, so you are getting some religion background instead. I admit, I haven’t really spent much time on the religions for my world yet, so these lore pages have been as good an excuse as any to dive in and start fleshing things out.

Writing-wise, things are crawling along slowly but steadily. I started a new job last week which has made finding time to work on the script challenging, but I’ll manage. Today I’m working on a scene with a handful of off-duty soldiers gambling away their hard earned wages. I’m already having doubts about how necessary this particular scene is to the overall story, but I’m going to push through and hope for the best. 

Aaaand we’re back! Or rather, I’m still working on the script for the rest of the book, but here are some goodies to hold you over. 

I’ve decided, due to the complexity of the story I’m trying to tell, that it will be better for me to write ahead a few chapters rather than rushing to start producing pages for the next chapter. I’m not sure how much longer the script is going to take, but rest assured I am working on it for a few hours practically every single day, so it’s only a matter of time. I’ll be doing my best to keep you all updated on my progress, and in the meantime I will also be doing my best to keep the website updated with some fun filler content like this. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND that’s all she wrote! 

So, as you can probably imagine there’s going to be a bit of a gap between chapters. I am taking the time to finalize the script for the rest of the book, which is going well, but I have a good bit of writing left to get through, and will then need to go through and do some much needed editing and pruning. After that it will be on to thumbnailing, more editing, and since we are moving to a new setting and an entirely new cast of characters, a hefty bit of designing. How long this is going to take is anyone’s best guess, but I’ll do my best to be rolling on new pages sometime in the first half of this year.  

In the meantime, I’m thinking of some filler content to cover the gap with. There may be some non-spoilery bits of lore, world-building, character design, etcetera coming your way soon, so stay tuned for that!

Well, there you have it, the moment we’ve been building up to. I had originally planned for all of this to happen in a much shorter number of pages, but I kept asking myself logistical questions, and those questions led to new scenes and set pieces, which led to new questions that I felt I needed to answer, and the whole thing just kind of snowballed. Thankfully we’re on the home stretch, and I have some more time off from work coming up and I plan to use that to crank through the rest of the chapter as quickly as possible.

I’ve thought about trying to simplify the rest of the chapter to get through it, but the climax we’re barreling towards is a bit of a foregone conclusion at this point. As for the long delay getting this page out the door, I’m sorry about that. It was one of the more challenging pages I’ve had to draw, in a comic that seems to be made up of nothing BUT challenging pages, a feature owing slightly more to my poor planning than it does to my almost crippling desire to hear people say things like: “wow man, that sure must have taken you a long time”, but it’s a narrow margin.

The second issue that came up on this page is, tragically, after a long hiatus I’m back to work. That is: I’m back to taking on storyboarding jobs regularly, at least when they pop up. My amazing wife, Meg Syv (of Daughter of the Lilies fame), has kindly been holding down the fort for us while I’ve struggled to figure out exactly what I’m doing with this comic and how I plan to move forward with it (I’ve been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work, I swear!), but the time has come for me to get back to it. The unfortunate thing about that is I do have to get used to juggling comic and work again, and trying to do so in such a way as I don’t burn myself out entirely. It’s a delicate equilibrium to maintain, and if I know anything about myself, I’m often going to fall short. This was one such time. Apologies.
