so one of the things i've always liked about CATS is that while they do cut/update some of the worse parts, they typically do not update the bits that reference real-world things, especially the actors named in Gus the theatre cat. one of the actors Gus worked with died on October 13th, 1905, placing his birth definitively before that date. As the original text was published in 1939, this makes gus, at minimum, 34 years old. (i can't find the date the poem was written, just that the collection was written throughout the 30s but i'm going to assume gus didn't die between the poem being written and the book being published)

SO that makes me wonder--is old deuteronomy older than gus? i kind of want deut to be younger than gus so that like, old deuteronomy is legendarily old and then there's a guy that's just. older. older than dirt. older than anything. older than the concept of old in the minds of all the jellicles. a cat so old that he went "wait excuse me why are you calling him old now?" like 8 years ago when he went from "deuteronomy" (or my personal hc that he was something like the great deuteronomy, or deuteronomy the wise) to "old deuteronomy"
