Shawnter Medieval!AU: The Prince and The Barbarian King- Chapter 13: Straw, Sugar, and Silent Stones
Paring: Shawn Michaels/Triple H
Summary: Kane and Sean have a peaceful night eating lemon tarts. While this happens Kevin Nash and Scott Hall share raw pieces of their past, during a quiet night walk through the torchlit corridors. Meanwhile, as the fortress falls into a deep silence, a restless Shawn and Hunter lie awake in each other’s arms, each trying to make sense of the new information regarding the Lakeside Trap.
Notes: Sorry for how late this chapter is, beacuse it deals a little with backstory I wanted to make sure the continuity was perfect so there was a lot of back and forth during editing. English is not my first language and I'm dyslexic af, so feel free to correct anything. Comments are always welcome.
The high mountain night came fast, draping the stone fortress in a heavy velvet blanket of cold and silence. Down in the lower levels, the howling alpine wind was muffled, replaced by the deep, earthy scents of dry hay, aged leather, and fresh pine shavings.
Sean slipped quietly through the heavy wooden doors of the stables, his soft dandelion scent fluttering with a nervous but deeply excited warmth. Tucked securely beneath his tunic was the white linen bundle Daniel Bryan had given him, the sweet, citrusy aroma of baked sugar radiating against his ribs.
Near the main stalls, Mankind was busy cleaning a set of horse bridles by the light of a single oil lantern. His wild brown hair was as disheveled as ever, and his leather mask glistened under the dim glow. When he noticed the young valet’s entrance, his wide eyes crinkled into a raspy, cheerful chuckle.
"Ah, the little bird returns from the high halls!" Mankind greeted him, absentmindedly tucking a stray piece of twine into his pocket. "Tell me, tell me... did the giant knight accept our wooden creation? Did Sir Kevin stomp around like a proud stallion?"
Sean smiled warmly, stepping closer into the circle of lantern light. "He did, Mankind! He complained fiercely at first, but the design worked perfectly. The brace supports his weight just like we planned." Sean reached into his bundle, carefully pulling out two golden, neatly crusted lemon tarts and placing them onto Mankind's wooden workbench. "These are from Daniel Bryan, as a thank you for your hard work."
Mankind’s eyes lit up with eccentric delight. He snatched one up, taking a massive, messy bite and letting out a muffled groan of pure satisfaction. "Oh, sweet lemon! Splendid, splendid! Daniel knows exactly how to soothe an old stable hand's soul."
Mankind chewed happily, his intense gaze shifting subtly toward the deep, pitch-black shadows of the very back stall, where a colossal, unmoving silhouette was silently listening. A slow, knowing smirk cut across the leather mask.
"And what about the rest of the sweet treasures in that cloth, little bird?" Mankind purred mischievously, nudging Sean with a dirty shoulder. "Are those for the big, quiet monster hiding in the dark? My, my... look at you, rushing down here every night like a little lovebird. A sweet dandelion lovebird, flying straight into the ashes."
Sean’s face instantly exploded into a deep, burning crimson. The sudden, intense sweetening of his dandelion scent betrayed his absolute embarrassment, but as he clutched the linen bundle tightly against his chest, he didn't pull away. He didn't drop his head in shame, and most importantly, he didn't deny a single word of what Mankind had just said. He simply stood there, his heart hammering, accepting the title with a quiet, stubborn tenderness.
Deep in the shadows of the corner stall, Kane heard it all. His massive, heavily burned frame shifted slightly against the wooden slats, a sudden, powerful wave of warm, fiercely protective Alpha energy rolling off him at the Omega's silent acceptance.
Mankind chuckled warmly, waving a sticky hand. "Go on, go on, lovebird. The beast is hungry, and Mankind has bridles to clean."
Sean walked slowly toward the back stall, his boots rustling softly against the straw. When he stepped into the small enclosure, he found Kane sitting on a large wooden crate, his colossal shoulders hunched forward. The fresh linen bandages Sean had applied earlier were still perfectly in place around his scarred forearms, treated with absolute care.
Sean offered a soft, genuine smile and sat down on a smaller hay bale right across from the giant, completely comfortable in his presence. He carefully untied the white linen cloth, presenting the remaining pile of golden lemon tarts.
"I brought the rest for you," Sean whispered, his voice dropping into that soothing, melodic register that always seemed to ground the wild Alpha. "Daniel Bryan made them fresh."
Kane didn't rush. He slowly reached out with his thick, scarred fingers, carefully picking up a tart and eating it in a single, quiet bite, his dark, hollow eyes fixed entirely on Sean.
As the giant ate, Sean began to talk, his voice carrying the soft, eager rhythm of a true romantic who was simply overjoyed to see love blooming in a cold world. "The castle is so different today, Kane. You should have seen the medical wing this morning. When the King and the Prince woke up... they were sleeping completely embraced. Prince Shawn had his face buried right in King Hunter's neck, and he didn't even get angry about it. He just purred. A real, sweet Omega purr."
Sean smiled, his eyes shining under the dim stall light. "And Sir Kevin... Master Scott has been following him around all afternoon to help him practice with the crutch. Sir Kevin slipped on the stones, and instead of making one of his usual cynical jokes, Master Scott just caught him. He held his arm so firmly, so gently... I think the big knight's armor is fully melting away."
Kane sat perfectly still, his massive chest rising and falling heavily as he listened to every single word. He loved the sound of Sean's voice. For a man who had spent his entire life surrounded by the violent screams of Death Valley, the agonizing roars of fire, and the cruel commands of Paul Bearer, Sean’s gentle chatter was a beautiful, impossible symphony. Kane didn't say a word, he still didn't think his damaged, unused throat could force out human speech without sounding like a monster, but Sean didn't seem to care about the silence. The young valet treated him with a profound respect and a deep, innate affection that Kane had never experienced in his life.
Slowly, carefully, Kane's colossal right hand reached down to the wooden plate. He picked up one of the remaining lemon tarts, but instead of eating it, he extended his thick arm forward, holding the sweet pastry out toward Sean.
Sean blinked, staring at the offering in surprise, and his cheeks instantly flushed a beautiful, soft pink. "For me?" he whispered.
Kane didn't move, his dark eyes holding a silent, unyielding gentleness.
Sean offered a bright, radiant smile and leaned forward, reaching out to accept the tart. As he took the pastry, the thick, heavy leather of Kane’s gloved hand lightly brushed against Sean’s bare fingers. A sudden, electric shock of pure, thrilling Alpha warmth zipped straight through Sean’s skin, causing his dandelion scent to flare with a beautiful, intoxicating sweetness.
Sean took a small bite of the tart, his eyes never leaving the giant's face. Sitting together in the dusty, quiet shadows of the barn, wrapped in the scent of ash and dandelions, the broken monster and the little prince's valet found a perfect, silent sanctuary of their own.
Before the heavy silence of the night fully settled over the royal beds, the quiet, torchlit corridors of the upper palace echoed with the slow, rhythmic thud-clack of Kevin Nash’s new crutch.
The 7-foot knight was pacing the smooth stone hallway, his jaw clenched as he focused on navigating the slick corners. Scott Hall walked right beside him, his heavy golden chains clinking softly with every step. The warrior kept his hands casually tucked into his belt, but his dark eyes never wandered far from Kevin's bad knee, his thick sea breeze musk lazily swirling around the room to offer a comforting, silent support.
"You're tracking remarkably well for a giant with a broken wheel, chico," Scott drawled, a lazy smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "The kid and Mankind really did a number on that wooden toy. You almost look majestic."
Kevin let out a low, dry chuckle, adjusting his grip on the padded leather brace. "Don't get used to it, Hall. The moment Rey gives me the all-clear, this 'toy' is going straight into the fireplace. But I have to admit, it beats sitting on that mattress listening to Guerrero's terrible jokes."
The corridor opened up into a wider, arched balcony that looked down over the misty courtyard below. Kevin stopped, leaning his massive weight against the stone balustrade to give his leg a moment of rest. The cold mountain air was biting, but after being trapped in the medical wing for days, the crisp wind felt incredible.
Scott stepped up right beside him, leaning his broad shoulders against the stone, his toothpick shifting to the corner of his mouth. "So, Mister knight... you fight like a man possessed whenever the little prince so much as blinks. I've seen loyal guards before, but you? You look like you'd jump into a volcano if he asked you to. What's the story there? How did a towering southern Alpha like you end up tied to a delicate royal's hip?"
Kevin stared down at the dark courtyard, a soft, rare smile cutting through his rugged features as his cedar wood scent turned warm and deeply nostalgic.
"Shawn met me during one of his unauthorized escapades through the city market," Kevin rumbled, his deep voice carrying a quiet fondness. "He was always running away from the palace walls even as a kid, desperate to see the real world. My parents ran a small fruit stall in the lower districts, and Shawn, itching to taste fresh strawberries, happened upon our stand. He was completely amazed by my size, even back then, I towered over everyone in the market. Just one look at me was enough to convince him that I needed to be his personal guard."
Scott let out a rich chuckle, thoroughly enjoying the image of a young, chaotic Shawn commanding a giant. "A prince picking his army from the fruit market. Sounds exactly like him."
"It didn't take much for Shawn to convince his father to allow me to train as a knight," Kevin continued, his eyes turning reflective. "My parents were absolutely ecstatic with the proposal. It gave our family a completely new life. In no time, Shawn and I became close friends, and to make things even better, the training came naturally to me. I was a quick learner. Because of our history, I became one of the very few people Shawn actually listened to, which quickly prompted King Vincent to make me the head of the prince's Personal Guard."
Scott nodded slowly, his playful demeanor softening into a genuine, deep-rooted respect. "He gave you a purpose, and you gave him a shield. That's a real bond, chico." Scott flicked his dark eyes toward Kevin’s bandaged leg. "But that knee... Hunter’s kick was brutal, sure, but a warrior like you doesn't collapse like that unless there's an old structural crack. How did you break it the first time?"
Kevin let out a heavy breath, shifting his grip on the crutch as a faint grimace crossed his face. "A tournament in the Western Alliance, five years ago. I was sparring against a heavy cavalry commander from the northern borders, a massive Alpha who fought dirty. He caught my leg with the flat of his shield while my boot was caught in a muddy patch of the arena turf. The joint completely tore apart. The royal doctors patched it up with silk thread and prayers, but the cold mountain air up here... it makes the old scars lock up like rusty iron. Hunter just found the exact crack in my wall."
Scott didn't make a joke. Instead, he took a slow step closer into Kevin’s personal space, his hand reaching out to firmly but gently squeeze Kevin’s thick bicep. The absolute warmth of his Alpha touch sent a sudden, thrilling jolt straight through Kevin's stoic armor.
"The boss didn't know about the tournament injury, Kevin," Scott said softly, his voice dropping into a rough, earnest register. "He was being a stubborn jackass, yes, but he didn't mean to permanently break you. And if it makes you feel any better, Hunter carries a heavy burden on his shoulders too. His father was the first true King of Kings, the one who began the territorial expansion and managed to forcefully unite the mountain clans under one banner."
Kevin shifted his weight on his crutch, listening intently as Scott sighed, his sea breeze scent turning deep and heavy with political gravity.
"But you know how it is in the ridges, chico. Having a blood right doesn't mean a damn thing to our people. The mountain clans don't bow to a lineage; they respect raw power and the capacity to take it. Before Hunter's father, others had tried to unify the mountains, and some even succeeded for a brief winter, but their reigns always collapsed into civil war the second the crown changed hands. When the first King of Kings died, it was the ultimate test. The unification almost shattered into a thousand bloody pieces."
Scott flicked his eyes toward the dark courtyard, a proud, fierce look in his gaze. "Hunter was the very first king in mountain history to make a royal succession actually work. He had to work himself to the bone, fighting off rival warlords, crushing rebellions, and earning the respect of every single distinct culture in these ridges. He bled to keep his father's dream alive. But the clans are exhausted, Kevin. Decades of non-stop expansion have left our people tired of war. That’s why this alliance with King Vincent is everything to him. Hunter needs this marriage to guarantee a permanent peace for our people. When he looks at Shawn... he sees the future of his entire kingdom. He just doesn't know how to navigate a southern prince without sounding like a barbarian."
Kevin Nash stood in the quiet darkness, processing the deep history of the man who held his prince’s fate. The rigid animosity he had carried against the Barbarian King completely dissolved, replaced by a grim, warrior respect.
He cut his dark eyes over to Scott, noticing the way the torchlight caught the golden chains around the warrior's neck. For the first time all evening, Kevin didn't push the mountain Alpha away.
"He's lucky to have warriors like you watching his back, Hall," Kevin rumbled softly, his cedar wood scent settling into a warm, comfortable mix with Scott's presence.
"We're a package deal, Big Daddy Cool," Scott winked, his devastatingly charming smirk returning to his lips as he lightly tapped Kevin’s crutch. "Now come on. Let’s get you back to the ward before Rey finds us out here and uses my skull for a bandage roll."
As they slowly turned to walk back down the corridor, their shoulders brushing in the shadows, the boundary between the civilized south and the rugged north continued to blur into something entirely unbreakable.
Later that night, the heavy wooden doors of the medical wing remained bolted from the inside. The dim, orange glow of the hearth cast long shadows across the stone floor, painting the room in a quiet, protective amber.
Hunter and Shawn lay together on the massive stone bed, their bodies remaining instinctively close. Hunter’s uninjured right arm was still wrapped carefully around the prince’s waist, and Shawn’s head was resting gently against the Alpha’s chest. To any outside observer, they looked perfectly at peace, their mixed scents of freshly fallen rain and soft roses creating a serene, domestic bubble in the dark.
But beneath the surface, neither of them could sleep. Their minds were entirely consumed by the terrifying ghosts of the lakeside ambush.
Shawn stared blankly at the stone ceiling, listening to the heavy, steady beat of Hunter’s heart. He was trapped in a vicious loop of strategic thoughts, trying to dissect the mysterious change in the mercenaries' tactics. The first attack on the mountain pass had been a ruthless assassination attempt, clean, lethal, meant to shatter the treaty by leaving a dead prince on the border. But the lakeside trap was entirely different. They had used ropes, non-lethal weapons, and explicit, precise orders.
Bischoff changed his mind, Shawn thought, his jaw tightening. But why?
He thought about the vipers whispering in his father’s ear back home. He thought about Pat Patterson’s greasy, cold ledger entries and Gerald Brisco’s calculating, slimy politics. And then, for one dark, horrifying second, a sudden, sickening thought dropped straight into his stomach: Did my father have something to do with this?
Shawn’s breath hitched slightly in the dark. He knew King Vincent Kennedy McMahon was far from a shining example of a loving, caring father. The moment Shawn had presented as an Omega, any semblance of parental affection had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, distant gaze that viewed him as nothing more than a strategic bargaining chip to buy security. But it wasn't just him; Vincent was entirely devoid of warmth with everyone. Even with Shane, his strong, proud Alpha younger brother who did everything to please the crown, Vincent was a harsh, unyielding tyrant.
Yet, as the cold sweat broke out on his neck, Shawn fiercely shook his head against Hunter’s chest, completely rejecting the terrifying thought. No. It’s impossible.
Shawn refused to believe his own flesh and blood would sell him out to a ruthless snake like Eric Bischoff. Not out of a belief in Vincent's morality, but because of his father's absolute, ruthless intelligence. From a purely logical standpoint, it would be a catastrophic, completely flawed political decision. If King Vincent betrayed a sacred marriage alliance he had just sworn to the mighty King of Kings, his royal reputation across the Western Alliance would be utterly ruined. No other kingdom would ever trust a word, a treaty, or a contract from a monarch who backstabbed his own blood and his allies so sloppily. It had to be Patterson and Brisco playing a dangerous game behind the King’s back. It had to be.
Resting right beneath him, Hunter was staring into the dying embers of the fireplace, his green eyes dark and hyper-focused. He felt the subtle shift in Shawn's breathing, his uninjured hand instinctively tightening its grip around the prince's waist, releasing a slow wave of comforting, warm pheromones to keep the smaller blond grounded.
Hunter wasn't focused on the courtly politics of the south. His thoughts were entirely logistical, tactical, and brutally forged in the harsh realities of mountain warfare.
He was dissecting the clearing. Eight disciplined Alphas had managed to slip past his finest mountain scouts and cross right into his inner perimeter, setting a trap at the lower lake. It was a severe, unacceptable breach of his castle's security. Hunter’s mind was already drawing up maps, calculating how many extra Alpha foot soldiers he needed to post along the lower ridges and how to reorganize the New Age Outlaws' tracking routes to ensure a snake like Bischoff could never breathe his mountain air again.
But a defensive lockdown wasn't enough. Hunter was a conqueror; his culture was a fierce, unyielding warrior lineage that lived by a simple, brutal law: If a wolf bites your flank, you do not just build a higher fence. You hunt the pack down and tear their throats out.
His Alpha blood was screaming for a counter-offensive. He wanted to march Chyna, Batista, and the full weight of his mountain army straight down into Eric Bischoff’s western borders and turn his keeps into ash.
However, as his eyes flicked down to the soft blond curls resting against his shoulder, Hunter forced his dangerous, aggressive instincts to a grinding halt. The wedding was looming. The official ceremony was only a matter of weeks away, and the peace of his borders depended entirely on the union being solidified with a mutually accepted mate mark. Launching a massive, bloody war right now would completely destabilize the entire region, pulling King Vincent's forces into the fray and ruining any chance of a peaceful future for his people.
He couldn't attack. Not yet. He had to wait, play the defensive hand, and focus on the battlefield inside his own bedroom. He needed to ensure his prince was safe, healed, and completely courted before the iron doors of war swung open.
Hunter let out a slow, quiet breath, his rain scent smoothing down into a peaceful drizzle as he pulled Shawn just an inch closer in the dark, silently swearing to the mountains that the next time Bischoff's men showed their faces, there wouldn't be a single survivor left to carry a note back.
Summary: Greensboro, 2002. An attack in a dark parking garage leaves Shawn Michaels with a fractured skull and a terrifying, hollow void where his recent memories are supposed to be. He wakes up to a world he doesn't fully recognize, but he has one anchor: Hunter.
Safe inside Hunter’s secluded estate, wrapped in clothes that don't fit him, and breathing in a life that isn't his, Shawn believes he is being protected. He doesn't know about the DX breakup. He doesn't know about the Pedigree in the ring. And he certainly doesn't know that the hands keeping him warm in the dark are the exact same ones that broke him.

A quick heads-up: this is a dark psychological AU focused heavily on toxic codependency, manipulation, and whump. I wanted to explore the absolute limits of Hunter's possessiveness and Shawn's vulnerability during this era.

The heavy sedatives didn't bring peace; they brought a thick, claustrophobic darkness.
In the vacuum of his sleep, Shawn wasn't a man in a warm bed. He was flat on his back. The surface beneath him was rough, biting, and freezing cold; the unforgiving asphalt of an empty parking lot. Above him, the sky was a sickly, industrial gray, drowned out by the harsh glare of yellow stadium lights.
Shawn tried to scream, but his jaw was locked. He couldn't blink the crimson stain out of his vision. Through the red-tinted fog, a massive shape loomed over him. A shadow broke away from the darkness, dropping heavily onto one knee right beside his head.
He tried to lift his head, but it felt as though an iron weight was pinned to his skull. Then came the warmth. It was a thick, sticky line of heat crawling slowly across his forehead, pooling into the socket of his left eye, and dripping down the bridge of his nose.
Blood.
In the dream, Shawn’s desperate, drowning mind tried to paint Hunter’s face onto the silhouette. He wanted to see the panicked, heroic face of his best friend coming to pull him out of the abyss. But his body knew better. As the shadow leaned closer, an overwhelming, primal wave of terror crashed over Shawn. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to claw his way backward, to get away from the hands descending toward his face.
“Shawn.”
The voice didn't come from the dream.
Shawn’s eyes snapped open. He violently gasped for air, his chest heaving as he sat up abruptly in the pitch-black bedroom. The white cotton of his sheets was twisted tightly around his legs like a trap. Cold sweat drenched his collarbone, making the air in the room feel freezing against his skin. The sharp movement sent a blinding, white-hot spike of agony straight through his stitched hairline, making his vision blur.
"Whoa, whoa. Easy. I've got you. I'm right here."
Before Shawn could completely separate the nightmare from reality, a pair of heavy, powerful arms wrapped securely around his trembling shoulders. Hunter pulled him forward, burying Shawn’s face directly into the crook of his neck.
The scent of Hunter, expensive cologne mixed with the faint, metallic trace of the kitchen cleaner, swarmed Shawn’s senses. The sheer physical mass of the man was suffocating, but Shawn was too terrified to care. He clutched at the fabric of Hunter's shirt, his fingers digging into the muscle of Hunter's back as he sobbed into his shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, disjointed hiccups.
"The parking lot," Shawn choked out, his voice raw and cracking in the dark. "Hunter, I was... I was on the floor. There was so much blood. Someone was over me. I couldn't breathe. I was so scared."
Hunter didn't answer right away. He simply held him, his large chest rising and falling against Shawn's. In the dark, a slow, intoxicating heat spread through Hunter’s veins. Hearing Shawn cry, feeling him shake with a terror that Hunter himself had manufactured, made him feel like a god. Shawn was entirely stripped of his pride, of his legendary ego. He was just a boy pleading for safety in Hunter's arms.
"I know," Hunter murmured, his voice dropping into an impossibly soft, velvety register. He shifted his weight, sliding onto the mattress beside Shawn, keeping him pinned against his chest. "I know. It was just a nightmare. You're safe. The monster is gone."
Hunter's hand moved up, his large fingers gently weaving through Shawn’s long, tangled hair. He began to stroke it, over and over, a gesture that was far too intimate, far too slow to be just a friend comforting another.
Shawn didn't pull away. He was too weak, too dependent on the gravity Hunter provided. He leaned his entire weight into Hunter’s torso, his forehead resting just below Hunter's jaw. "Don't leave the room, Hunt. Please. Don't go back downstairs."
"I'm not going anywhere," Hunter whispered against Shawn's hair.
Then, Hunter tilted his head down. He didn't kiss Shawn’s forehead. Instead, he shifted his lips to the uninjured side of Shawn’s face. He pressed his lips softly against Shawn’s temple, letting them linger there for a long, heavy second. Then, with an agonizing slowness, his lips trailed down the curve of Shawn’s cheekbone, stopping just a fraction of an inch away from the corner of Shawn's mouth.
Shawn’s breathing hitched. Even through the fog of the painkillers, the sudden shift in the air was undeniable. The boundaries they had danced around for nearly ten years in locker rooms and hotel rooms were dissolving in the dark of this master bedroom.
But beneath that realization, the tiny, buried part of Shawn’s mind, the part that had just seen the shadow in the parking lot, felt a quiet, icy chill.
Hunter's fingers tightened in Shawn's hair, tilting his head back just enough to look down into his one open, bruised eye. "We’re going to fix this, Shawn," Hunter murmured, his breath brushing against Shawn’s lips. "We’re going to fix everything that went wrong before. It’s just you and me now. No one else matters."
Shawn closed his eyes, nodding weakly against the pressure of Hunter's hand. "Just you and me," he repeated, letting himself sink back into the golden cage, completely unaware that he was comforting his own executioner.
"We need to get you cleaned up," Hunter murmured, his voice echoing slightly in the high-ceilinged master bedroom. He helped Shawn sit on the edge of the mattress.
Shawn’s head felt like a lead weight. The dried blood from the parking lot was starting to stiffen in his hair, pulling uncomfortably at the edges of the thick bandage on his forehead. "Yeah," Shawn rasped, rubbing his good eye. "I... I should probably take a shower. If you could just show me where..."
"You're not taking a shower, Shawn. And you're definitely not doing it alone," Hunter interrupted flatly. The authority in his tone was gentle but unyielding. "Your balance is completely shot. If you dizzy out under the running water and slip, you'll crack your skull open again. I’m not taking that risk."
Before Shawn could protest, Hunter hooked his massive arms under Shawn’s knees and back, lifting him effortlessly again. He carried him straight into his own personal bathroom. A massive, opulent space lined with dark marble and centered around a jacuzzi tub that looked large enough to drown a man.
Hunter set Shawn down carefully on a plush leather vanity stool, then knelt to turn on the brass fixtures of the tub. Steam immediately began to rise, filling the room with a heavy, suffocating warmth.
Shawn watched him, a slight, awkward blush creeping up his neck. "Thanks, Hunt. You can... you can just leave the door cracked. I’ll yell if I feel dizzy. I can manage the rest."
Hunter didn't stop testing the water temperature. He didn't even look back at Shawn. "I told you. I’m not leaving you alone. Not even for a second."
Hunter stood up, his massive frame completely eclipsing the light in the room. He stepped toward Shawn, his large hands reaching down to grasp the hem of Shawn's loose shirt.
Shawn froze. A sudden, cold spike of panic hit his chest, not from modesty, but a strange, deep-rooted animal instinct that told him he was completely defenseless. "Hunter, wait, I can undress myself…"
"Stop fighting me, Shawn. Let me help you," Hunter murmured, his voice dropping into that smooth, hypnotic tone.
He pulled the shirt over Shawn's head, tossing it onto the marble floor. Then, with an agonizingly methodical slowness, Hunter stripped the rest of Shawn’s clothes away, exposing his battered, lean body to the harsh bathroom light. Shawn felt small, utterly bare, and intensely exposed under Hunter’s sharp green eyes. Hunter didn't look away; his gaze scanned every inch of Shawn's skin, registering the bruises on his ribs and hips with a terrifying mix of pride and hunger.
Gently, Hunter guided Shawn into the steaming water. Shawn let out a long sigh as the heat hit his aching muscles, sinking down until the water reached his chest. He closed his eyes, expecting the click of the bathroom door, expecting Hunter to finally give him some space.
Instead, the marble tiles clicked.
Shawn opened his good eye. Hunter hadn't left. He had rolled up the sleeves of his black shirt, exposing his massive, heavily veined forearms. He sat down on the edge of the tub, picking up a heavy washcloth and pouring a generous amount of his expensive sandalwood body wash onto it.
"Lean back," Hunter commanded softly.
Shawn’s throat went dry. A quiet voice in the back of his mind screamed that this was wrong, that a friend, no matter how close, didn't strip you naked and wash your body while you sat helpless in a tub. It felt suffocating. It felt like Hunter was systematically stripping away his dignity, piece by piece.
But as Hunter pressed the warm, soapy cloth against Shawn’s bruised shoulder, rubbing in slow, firm, soothing circles, the exhaustion took over. Shawn’s brain, desperate for safety, chose to overwrite the discomfort. He’s just being attentive, Shawn told himself, his eyelids growing heavy from the steam. He’s just taking care of me because I have no one else. He’s my best friend.
"You're doing great," Hunter whispered, his large hand moving down Shawn's arm, washing away the invisible dirt of the parking lot. Hunter’s fingers lingered against Shawn’s wrist, feeling the rapid, anxious pulse slowly settle down under his touch.
Hunter felt a profound, intoxicating rush of godhood. He was cleansing his prize. He was washing the blood of his own violence off Shawn's skin, only to replace it with his own scent, his own touch, his own rules. By the time he poured a pitcher of warm water over Shawn’s head to rinse the soap away, Shawn was completely pliant, leaning his damp head back against the marble, entirely domesticated.
Hunter worked with a quiet, terrifying efficiency. After helping Shawn out of the massive tub, he wrapped him in a towel that felt heavy enough to smother him. He led Shawn back into the bedroom and sat him down on the edge of the king-sized bed. Shawn sat there, shivering slightly as the dampness evaporated from his skin, his head hanging low from the sheer exhaustion of the bath.
Without a word, Hunter grabbed a wooden brush from his dresser. He stood behind Shawn, his large frame blocking out the dim light of the room, and began to brush Shawn’s damp, long hair. He was surprisingly gentle, untangling the knots with slow, rhythmic strokes, but the action itself was intensely controlling. He was grooming his prize, smoothing down the rough edges until Shawn looked exactly the way Hunter wanted him to look.
"Stay here. Don't move," Hunter murmured, setting the brush down.
He walked over to his massive mahogany wardrobe, pulling the heavy doors open. He scanned the rows of clothing. His hand initially drifted toward a faded black shirt, a Motörhead t-shirt, the heavy metal armor of The Game. But Hunter paused. His fingers hovered over the fabric, and a sudden, sharp calculation made his green eyes narrow.
No, he thought. The Motörhead shirt belonged to the competitor. It belonged to the ring. He didn't want Shawn wearing his strength. He wanted Shawn wearing him.
Hunter shifted his hand, sliding past the band shirts until he pulled out one of his own official WWE merchandise tees. It was a heavyweight black cotton shirt, broad-shouldered and thick, with the iconic silver iron cross on the front and his own name—Triple H—boldly stamped across the fabric. Along with it, he grabbed a pair of his own heavy gray sweatpants.
He walked back to the bed and helped Shawn slip into them.
The transformation was immediate, and it made a sickening rush of heat bloom in Hunter’s chest. As Shawn pulled the t-shirt over his head, he practically vanished inside it. The collar line was so wide on Shawn’s leaner frame that it immediately slid down, exposing the pale, fragile curve of his right shoulder and collarbone. The sleeves hung past his elbows, making his arms look small and helpless.
When Shawn stood up to pull the sweatpants waist higher, the thick fabric pooled in heavy, ridiculous folds over his bare feet, dragging on the floor. Shawn looked up, squinting through his one swollen, blackened eye, hitching the pants up with a weak, confused smile. "They're... a little big, Hunt."
A profound, intoxicating sense of absolute possession washed over Hunter, so intense it made his jaw clench. Shawn Michaels—the legendary, untouchable icon, the man who used to command entire arenas in custom silk and leather—was standing in the middle of Hunter's bedroom, completely swallowed by Hunter’s own name. He was wearing Hunter’s face on his chest. He was marked, branded, and domesticated, looking like a broken doll that belonged exclusively to one owner.
"They fit well enough," Hunter lied softly, his voice dropping into a dark, thick register as he stepped closer and forced the drawstring of the sweatpants into a tight, secure knot around Shawn’s waist. His fingers lingered against the bare skin of Shawn's hip for a second too long. "Come on. Time for your medicine. Let's get you under the blankets."
As Shawn crawled into the bed, heavy and slowed down by the weight of the oversized clothes, Hunter knew the trap was officially shut.

For Shawn, life inside the monolithic walls of the Layfield estate was an endless, suffocating stretch of monotony. The sprawling mansion, with its pristine infinity pool and perfectly manicured gardens, was less of a palace and more of a luxurious vacuum, draining the color out of every single day.
Lately, the silence of the house felt heavier than usual. Shawn drifted through his routine, his blue eyes glazed over as he swam or mindlessly stared at the television screen, but his mind kept wandering back to the past. He missed Kevin. Kevin Nash had been a massive, chaotic storm of energy in this quiet prison; he had always been ready to talk, to make jokes, and to treat Shawn like an actual human being with a voice, rather than a trophy to be cataloged.
Bret, on the other hand, was an unyielding wall of stone. The new bodyguard maintained a crushing, constant professional distance that Shawn simply couldn't crack. He was always there, a dark, silent sentinel standing just two paces behind, his eyes hidden behind those annoying sunglasses.
Yet, despite the Hitman's legendary stoicism, Shawn could see right through the armor.
Shawn had learned how to read people from a terribly young age. When you started modeling nude at eighteen and working as an escort at nineteen, learning to scan the micro-expressions of powerful, volatile men wasn't just a skill, it was a survival mechanism. And now, trapped in a marriage with a monster like John Bradshaw Layfield, that mechanism was the only thing keeping Shawn alive. He could read the shifting air in a room before a single word was spoken.
And right now, Shawn could read the profound, crushing weight of grief and exhaustion breaking through Bret's rigid posture. No matter how perfectly Bret aligned his cuffs or how straight he held his spine, Shawn noticed the slight, heavy sag in the bodyguard's shoulders, the tight strain around his jaw, and the subtle gray fatigue dulling his skin.
He knew exactly why it was there.
Rey had quietly told him yesterday afternoon, his voice a hushed murmur while setting down a tray of tea, that Bret’s father had been rushed to the Intensive Care Unit. Shawn also remembered Eddie’s quiet words from a week ago, describing the scene on the suburban driveway, Bret dropping to his knees on the cobblestones, being desperately hugged by his young niece and nephew, carrying the desperate financial survival of an entire bedridden family on his broad back.
Staring out at the vibrant green of the estate's private courtyard, a deep, paralyzing wave of melancholy settled over Shawn’s chest.
Hearing about Bret’s dying father and the fierce loyalty of the Hart family only served to summon the ghosts of Shawn’s own past. It brought back the bitter, stinging memory of the house he had been violently kicked out of at seventeen for the simple sin of being gay. He remembered his own father, a cold, authoritarian man whose words were always laced with venom and whose hands were far too quick to strike. He remembered his mother, a silent shadow in the corner who had never once raised her voice to defend her youngest son from his father’s relentless attacks.
The only ones who had ever tried to do anything were his brothers. But they had been just as terrified of the monster at the head of the dinner table as Shawn was. Their protection had been quiet, fragile, and ultimately futile against a family that chose to cast him out into the cold streets.
He had spent his final months of high school living with a kind, elderly neighbor, a childless widower named José Lothario. Years ago, José’s late wife used to babysit Shawn and his siblings, and Shawn had always been a helpful boy, returning the favor by carrying José’s groceries and tending to his yard.
It was José who had patiently taught Shawn basic self-defense techniques, wanting the boy to have the tools to protect himself against the cruel, relentless bullying he faced at school. But as Shawn stared out at the manicured garden, his chest tightened with a cold, familiar ache. He had learned how to throw a punch and break a hold, but knowing how to defend yourself against cruel teenagers on a high school playground was entirely, devastatingly different from facing the towering, terrifying fury of your own father. When the monster at the head of the dinner table turned on him, all of José's training had evaporated into pure, paralyzing terror, leaving a broken seventeen-year-old boy to pack his life into a single bag and catch a one-way bus from the Texas countryside straight to the cold, unforgiving neon lights of Houston.
And it was that exact, gaping wound of parental rejection that had ultimately led him into John Bradshaw Layfield's waiting arms.
Shawn closed his eyes, a bitter, hollow ache swelling in his chest as he remembered how stupid he had been. It was the desperate, starving need for validation that made him the perfect prey. When JBL had found him at twenty-one, a drowning escort exhausted from selling his body to survive the city streets, the forty-two-year-old billionaire hadn't looked like a captor. He looked like a savior. JBL had swept in with his vast wealth, giving Shawn a lavish home, financial security, and a terrifyingly convincing facsimile of the love and protection his own parents had denied him. Shawn had anchored himself to that affection with a fierce, blinding desperation, entirely unaware that the older man was a predator who could smell his profound emotional starvation from a mile away. JBL had meticulously weaponized Shawn’s need to be wanted, feeding his insecurities just enough to mold him into exactly what Layfield Enterprises required: an exceptionally beautiful, entirely compliant trophy husband to be exhibited like a luxury vehicle in front of wealthy associates, a broken doll who would accept any boundary, or lack of it, just to keep from being discarded into the cold world again.
Now, at twenty-eight, Shawn just felt like a pathetic idiot for ever believing that something good, clean, and safe could arrive so easily in a life as broken as his.
But the deepest, most suffocating part of his torment wasn't just the imprisonment, it was the crushing weight of his own self-blame. In Shawn’s fractured perception, John hadn’t always been a monster. Shawn had genuinely, deeply fallen in love with him, and for those first few years, JBL had played the part of the doting, fiercely protective husband to absolute perfection. The nightmare had only started to bleed into reality as Shawn grew more comfortable, letting his true colors bleed through the pristine facade. The moment his actual personality began to surface, the quick-witted remarks, the playful defiance, the sharp tongue, JBL’s affection had curdled into systematic violence.
And Shawn truly, agonizingly believed it was all his fault.
He convinced himself that his personality was an inherently defective, toxic thing. After all, wasn't that exactly what his father and mother had drummed into his head before throwing him out? They had always told him that his reckless mouth, his biting sarcasm, and his refusal to bow down were the exact traits that would always ruin him. Shawn was entirely blind to the horrifying truth: JBL hadn't changed because Shawn was a bad husband; JBL had changed because his expensive, submissive living doll had suddenly started acting like a real human being with a soul. He couldn't see that his vibrant spirit was a threat to a tyrant's total control. He was so deeply buried under his own guilt that he failed to recognize the ultimate irony, that the very same loud, sarcastic, and fiercely independent personality JBL was trying to violently beat out of him was the exact reason people like Rey, Eddie and José loved and respected him for who he truly was.
Shawn took a slow, shaky breath, smoothing down the fabric of his loose linen pants as he sat on the stone bench in the garden. He looked up, his blue eyes finally locking onto the dark figure of Bret standing a few feet away under the shade of a tree, guarding a wealth he didn't own to keep a heartbeat alive in a hospital miles away.
Shawn shifted on the bench, his bad knee giving a dull, familiar throb, and finally cleared his throat to break the heavy silence of the afternoon.
"Hey," Shawn called out, his voice softer than usual, stripped of its biting sarcasm. He tapped the empty stone space beside him. "Sit down for a minute, Hitman. You look like you're about to collapse."
Bret’s jaw tightened beneath the shade of the tree. His first, visceral instinct was a sharp flash of irritation. He wanted to snap back, to tell the younger man that not everyone had the luxury of lounging in a multi-million-dollar estate all day, that the vast majority of people actually had to work, sweat, and bleed every single day just to survive.
But as the bitter words formed in his throat, Bret forced himself to swallow them down. It wasn't just because making a scene would be entirely unprofessional; it was because the memory of the photoshoot flashed vividly in his mind. He remembered the brutal physicality of those held poses, the way Shawn’s bad knee had violently trembled on the marble stairs, and the fact that the kid never seemed to get a single night of real, peaceful sleep, constantly thrashing and waking up drenched in sweat from horrific nightmares.
Still, Bret remained standing, his hands clasped firmly behind his back. He remembered the pool, and he remembered the sudden, volatile flirts in the executive restroom. He wasn't about to let himself become a plaything for a wealthy mogul’s moody husband.
"I’m fine where I am, Mr. Michaels," Bret answered, his deep voice carrying its usual flat, unyielding tone. "My job is to maintain perimeter awareness."
Shawn didn't roll his eyes this time. He just tilted his head, his striking blue eyes locking onto Bret’s sunglasses with a quiet, stubborn insistence. "The perimeter is secured by ten-foot stone walls and a dozen cameras, Hitman. The gravel isn't going to open up and swallow me. Just sit down. It’s an order, if that makes your rigid conscience feel any better."
Bret let out a short, silent breath through his nose. Realizing that standing there debating the client was drawing more attention than simply complying, he stepped forward. With a slow, calculated movement, he sat down on the far edge of the stone bench, his body stiff and completely on guard.
Shawn instantly picked up on the tight, vibrating discomfort radiating from the bodyguard. Having spent his entire youth learning how to navigate the personal spaces of volatile men, Shawn didn't push it. Without a word, he smoothly shifted his weight, sliding a few inches down to the opposite side of the bench, deliberately giving Bret a respectful amount of breathing room.
The physical distance worked. Bret felt the intense, defensive coil in his shoulders relax just a fraction, though his face remained an unreadable mask of stone.
The silence that settled over the sun-drenched courtyard was incredibly tense and awkward. Shawn stared down at his own lap, his fingers listlessly tracing the linen of his pants before he finally braced himself to break the ice, his voice dropping into a soft, hesitant register.
"Heard your father isn't well..." Shawn murmured, his eyes remaining fixed on his own hands. "Rey told me."
Bret didn't turn his head to look at him. He kept his eyes locked on the perimeter hedges, his answer coming out short, fast, and entirely dry. "He's in the ICU."
Shawn winced slightly at the bluntness of the words, a flash of genuine sorrow crossing his pale features. "I'm... really sorry to hear that, Bret. Truly."
"Thank you," Bret replied, the words a sterile, rapid transaction of politeness. He didn't elaborate. He didn't mention the heart failure, the impending surgical deadlines, or the astronomical medical bills currently being guaranteed by JBL's corporate accounts. He kept his private misery locked behind a steel wall, giving the younger man absolutely nothing else to work with.
Following Shawn’s quiet apology, a heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the garden once more. Bret remained a statue on his side of the stone bench, his eyes tracking the perimeter hedges while his mind stayed locked in the sterile white walls of the ICU.
Then, the rhythm of the quiet afternoon shattered.
Shawn’s right foot began to tap against the gravel. Tap, tap, tap, tap. It was a fast, erratic, incredibly anxious movement, his designer boot kicking up tiny bits of dirt with every strike. To Bret, whose nerves were already frayed to a dangerous wire by his father’s failing health and the mounting economic pressure, the repetitive noise was intensely grating. It didn't help that Bret had spent the last few days watching Shawn's bad knee and back buckle from physical trauma; seeing the younger man violently agitating the exact leg that was supposed to be resting felt like a blatant, spoiled insult to his own recovery.
Bret’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. He didn't want to start an argument over a ruined leg, nor did he want to lose his professional composure. Deciding he had spent enough time humoring the client's moody whims, Bret shifted his weight forward, pressing his hands against his knees to stand back up.
Before his boots could even leave the stone patio, Shawn’s voice cut through the air again, his tone dropping the anxious rhythm to frantically hold Bret’s attention.
"Do you have siblings?" Shawn asked, his blue eyes flicking up to catch Bret’s movement.
Bret froze halfway out of his seat. He let out a slow, controlled breath through his nose, begrudgingly settling his weight back onto the edge of the stone bench. He kept his posture rigid, his sunglasses reflecting the harsh sunlight.
"Yes," Bret answered. The response was a short, sharp, and entirely dry wall of stone. He offered absolutely no names, no ages, and no context.
Shawn, however, didn't let the barrier stop him. He stopped tapping his foot, leaning back slightly against the stone seat as a faint, knowing smirk pulled at the corner of his lips. "I bet you're the oldest. You’ve got that... intense, bossy, big-brother energy. Like the weight of the entire world is your personal responsibility."
"Middle," Bret corrected flatly.
He didn't explain the reality behind that single word. He didn't tell Shawn that he was actually the eighth child out of twelve siblings. He didn't mention the chaotic, crowded madness of the Hart house, or the fact that because of Stu’s exhausting training schedules, Bret had practically raised his younger brothers and sisters himself, especially the last two, Owen and Diana. He didn't explain that protecting his family wasn't a choice; it was woven into his very DNA.
Shawn blinked, his eyebrows raising in genuine surprise before a soft, self-deprecating laugh escaped his lips. He looked down at his own lap, his shoulders dropping as the defensive armor of the Heartbreak Kid softened completely.
"I'm the youngest," Shawn murmured, a faint, melancholy smile playing on his face.
Against every single shred of his strict professional training, Bret couldn't stop the reaction. A sudden, short, and entirely genuine laugh rumbled out of his chest, breaking through his stoic facade before he could even think to suppress it.
Shawn’s head snapped up, his striking blue eyes wide as he raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow, a playful spark returning to his gaze. "What? Is it that obvious?"
Bret turned his head, looking directly at Shawn for the first time since they had sat down. Through the dark tint of his glasses, he took in the petulant pout, the defensive sarcasm, the dramatic mood swings, and the absolute need for constant attention that Shawn had displayed over the last weeks.
"I would say so, yes," Bret replied, his voice carrying the faint, lingering warmth of his amusement.
Shawn smiled, a real, fragile, unscripted smile that didn't belong to a high-fashion magazine cover or a billionaire’s arm. For less than a heartbeat, sitting on a cold stone bench surrounded by a prison of manicured hedges, the vast chasm between the cold corporate bloodhound and the spoiled trophy husband disappeared entirely, leaving behind nothing but two boys sharing a brief, honest breath of fresh air.

Shawnter Feud!AU: The Reason You Cry- Chapter 2: The Monopoly on Salvation
Paring: Shawn Michaels/Triple H
Summary: Back at the estate, Hunter begins to cut away Shawn's safety net, starting with the Kliq itself. A tense, long-distance phone call with a guilt-ridden Kevin Nash gives Hunter the perfect tactical opening to enforce Shawn's total isolation under the guise of "doctor's orders." When an exhausted, concussed Shawn wanders into the dark kitchen, Hunter's mask slips, triggering an explosive wave of adrenaline. As he carefully tends to the jagged stitches on Shawn's hairline in the stifling intimacy of the bathroom, Hunter is forced to battle a sickening, violent urge: the desire to tear the wound open again just to watch his prize bleed.

The vibration of the cell phone on the granite kitchen counter sounded like a buzzsaw in the quiet house.
Hunter didn't answer it immediately. He stood in the dim light of his kitchen, pouring a glass of ice water, watching the screen light up with the name: NASH. He took a slow sip, letting it ring three, four times. He needed Kevin to feel the distance. He needed to be the one in control before he even picked up.
On the fifth ring, he clicked the button and brought the phone to his ear, his voice instantly dropping into a low, gravelly sigh of exhaustion. "Kevin."
"Hunter! Jesus Christ, finally," Kevin’s booming voice bled through the speaker, tight with anxiety. "I’ve been calling the hospital for hours. They said he was discharged. Where the hell is he? Is he okay? Did he remember anything?"
"Calm down, Big Daddy. Take a breath," Hunter said, his tone smooth, dripping with the practiced calm of a protective guardian. "He’s with me. I brought him to my place. He’s upstairs sleeping right now."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, the heavy static of long-distance filling the silence. "Your place? Hunter... we need to talk to him. I need to talk to him. He needs to know about the fight you had before the attack!"
"Kevin, stop," Hunter interrupted, his voice sharpening with a calculated edge of defensive honesty. "Look, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking about the ring. You're thinking about the fact that Shawn and I had a falling out. That we were screaming at each other. But you know how this business is. Friends fight. We've been doing this for ten years, Kev. But I would never do what that person did to him in that parking lot. You know me. I’m a lot of things, but I wouldn’t try to truly hurt him."
Through the line, Hunter could hear Kevin let out a long, heavy breath, the tension in his shoulders almost audible. In the wrestling world, betrayal in the ring was Tuesday afternoon; brutal real-world violence was something else. "I know, kid. I know. It's just... the whole thing is messed up. I feel like a piece of shit sitting here in bed while he's broken."
"And that’s exactly why he’s with me," Hunter pressed, stepping into the role of the ultimate pragmatic savior. He leaned against the counter, a cold smirk playing on his lips in the dark kitchen. "Look at the Kliq right now, Kevin. Look at us. You’re laid up with a torn quad, you can barely walk. Scott... Scott can’t even look at a bottle without spiraling right now, and Sean isn't doing any better with his own demons. Who else is going to protect him? Vince? Vince only cares about the money he can make."
Hunter let the words hang in the air, watching them sink like lead into Kevin's conscience.
"Shawn’s mind is fractured, Kev. The doctor said any sudden stress, any heavy confrontation about who fights with who, could make the brain swelling worse. He needs peace. And right now, I am the only one in the Kliq who is clean, standing, and capable of giving him that. I’m the only one who can keep him safe."
Another long, agonizing silence. Hunter could practically hear the gears turning in Nash's head, the giant finally bending to the weight of Hunter's logic.
"Yeah," Kevin muttered, his voice defeated. "Yeah, you're right. You're the only one who can handle it right now. Just... tell him I love him, alright? Tell him I'll call when the doctors say it's okay."
"I will, Kev. I'll take care of our boy," Hunter murmured. "I’ll talk to you soon."
He hung up, tossing the phone back onto the counter. A wave of intense, dark satisfaction washed over him. The Kliq was handled. Shawn was officially isolated. Nobody was coming to save him.
A floorboard creaked behind him.
Hunter froze. His muscles locked instantly, a violent jolt of adrenaline slamming into his chest. He turned around too fast, his eyes narrowing in the darkness.
Standing at the entrance of the kitchen, clutching the doorframe for support, was Shawn. He was still wearing the loose shirt he left the hospital with, his feet bare against the cold hardwood. The heavy white bandage on his forehead was slightly crooked, and his swollen, blackened eye looked terrifyingly stark in the shadows. He was trembling, his balance visibly compromised by the severe concussion.
"Hunter?" Shawn whispered, his voice small, raspy, and entirely too innocent. "I... I woke up. The room was too dark. I heard voices."
Hunter's heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped animal. How much did he hear? Did he hear Kevin’s name? Did he hear the word 'fight'?
For a fraction of a second, the mask slipped. A terrifying, icy wave of raw anger and panic flared in Hunter’s eyes. He took two long, aggressive strides toward Shawn, his large frame looming over the smaller man, his hands gripping Shawn’s shoulders with a force that was entirely too tight, pinning him against the wood.
"What are you doing out of bed?" Hunter demanded, his voice low, vibrating with a tense, dangerous authority that made Shawn flinch. "I told you not to get up, Shawn. I told you to stay in the room."
Shawn’s good eye widened in sudden, startled fear. The sheer intensity of Hunter’s reaction triggered a primitive alert in his brain. His body tensed up, trying to pull back, but Hunter’s grip was unyielding.
"I'm sorry," Shawn stammered, his breath catching in his throat. "I just... I wanted to see if you were okay. I didn't mean to…"
Realizing he was pushing too hard, Hunter forced his breathing to slow down. He blinked, burying the panic beneath a heavy layer of manufactured worry. He softened his grip, his hands sliding from Shawn’s shoulders down to his arms, rubbing them gently, though his body remained rigid with tension.
"Hey. I’m sorry. I'm sorry," Hunter murmured, his voice dropping back into that smooth, comforting tone, though his eyes scanned Shawn's face obsessively for any sign of suspicion. "I'm just... I'm terrified for you. The doctor said if you fall, if you hit your head again, it could be catastrophic. You scared me to death walking down those stairs in the dark."
Shawn looked up at him, the fear slowly draining from his eyes, replaced once again by that heartbreakingly deep vulnerability. "I didn't hear anything, Hunter. Just... you talking. Was that Vince?"
Hunter let out a quiet, invisible breath of relief. He didn't hear.
"Yeah," Hunter lied smoothly, guiding Shawn's weight against his chest, wrapping an arm securely around his waist to lead him back toward the stairs. "Just Vince checking in on the company asset. Come on. It’s time for your medicine. Let's get you back to bed."
As they walked back up into the shadows, Shawn leaned heavily into Hunter's side. The safe feeling returned, but the tiny, persistent voice in the back of Shawn’s mind whispered that the monster in the dark kitchen hadn't been an outsider.
Hunter guided Shawn back into the bedroom, but instead of leading him straight to the bed, he steered him toward the en-suite bathroom. He flipped on the light. The sharp, white illumination reflected off the marble and mirrors, making Shawn wince and shield his good eye with his hand.
"Sit here," Hunter commanded softly, pressing Shawn down onto the closed lid of the toilet.
Shawn sank into it, his body loose and heavy from exhaustion. He leaned his elbows on his knees, staring blankly at the dark tiles between his bare feet. His chest rose and fell in shallow, tired rhythms.
Hunter moved efficiently around the bathroom. He gathered a fresh roll of gauze, medical tape, an antiseptic solution, and the small amber bottle of painkillers. He filled a porcelain bowl with warm water. When he turned back to Shawn, his mind was spinning. The adrenaline from the scare in the kitchen hadn't fully faded. It had mutated into something darker, sharper.
He stood between Shawn’s knees, forcing Shawn to look up at him.
"Let’s look at this forehead," Hunter murmured. His large hands—the hands that had held championship gold, the hands that had shattered a car window—reached up. With agonizing slowness, he peeled back the edges of the medical tape.
Shawn groaned, a small flinch escaping his lips as the sticky adhesive pulled at his skin. "Careful, Hunt..."
"I'm being careful," Hunter whispered, his voice sweet.
He pulled the old bandage away, tossing it into the sink. Underneath, the reality of the parking lot attack was laid bare. The cut across Shawn’s hairline was jagged, held together by five neat, black medical stitches. The skin around it was puffy, a sickly mix of deep red and bruised yellow.
Hunter dipped a clean cloth into the warm water. He pressed it gently against the wound, dabbing away the dried, crusty blood.
As he cleaned the cut, a sudden, dark intoxication washed over Hunter.
He was so close he could smell the copper scent of the blood, the sweat on Shawn’s neck, and the familiar scent of his shampoo. Shawn’s eyes were closed, trusting him completely, presenting his throat and his wounds like an offering.
I did this, Hunter thought. A heavy, suffocating heat pooled in his gut. I broke him. I own him.
He stared at the black threads holding Shawn’s skin together. A sickening, violent urge suddenly clawed at his chest, so intense it made his fingers twitch. He wanted to slide his thumb under the edge of the wound. He wanted to press down, hard, until the stitches snapped one by one. He wanted to watch the skin split open again. He wanted to see the fresh, bright crimson blood spill out, hot and fast, running down Shawn’s face, masking the beautiful features of the boy toy who had tortured his soul for a decade. He wanted to see Shawn cry out in pain, to watch him bleed, to see him ruined by his hands all over again.
Hunter's breathing hitched, his chest rising rapidly. His grip on the wet cloth tightened until his knuckles turned white.
Shawn’s soft, slurred voice broke the spell. His good eye blinked open, clouded with confusion and pain. He looked at Hunter’s face, sensing the sudden shift in the air, the terrifying stiffness in the arms of the man before him. "You okay? Your hands are shaking."
Hunter swallowed hard, forcing the violent fog out of his mind. He let out a slow, controlled breath, burying the monster back into the dark corners of his consciousness. He smoothed his expression into one of deep, agonizing sympathy.
"Yeah. Yeah," Hunter lied, his voice thick with a genuine emotion that Shawn mistook for love. He squeezed the cloth, letting a few drops of warm water run down Shawn's cheek like fake tears. "It just... it kills me to see you like this. It breaks my heart."
Shawn smiled weakly, reaching out to touch Hunter’s forearm. "I'm okay. Because you're here."
You have no idea, Hunter thought, the twisted affection rushing back to replace the sadism. He took a fresh piece of gauze and taped it firmly over the stitches, sealing his dark secret away once more. He handed Shawn the two pain pills and the glass of water. "Drink. All of it."
Shawn swallowed the medication without question, leaning heavily against Hunter as Hunter helped him stand up and walk back to the bed.
As Shawn slid under the heavy blankets, his eyes were already glazing over from the rapid onset of the sedatives. Within minutes, his breathing deepened, slipping into a heavy, drug-induced slumber.
Hunter didn't leave the room. He pulled up a heavy wooden chair to the side of the bed, sitting in the shadows, his green eyes locked onto the quiet, breathing form of his prize. He would watch him all night. He would keep him safe from the world, and safe from the truth.

The quiet hum of the intensive care unit was a low, mechanical drone that did nothing to soothe the pounding tension in Bret’s temples. The air here was colder than in the rest of the clinic, smelling strongly of chemical disinfectants. Through the reinforced glass of the observation window, Bret could see his father. Stu Hart looked heartbreakingly small beneath the stark white hospital sheets, surrounded by a complex web of IV lines and monitors tracking the chaotic, irregular rhythms of his heart.
A quiet clearing of a throat behind him broke Bret's vacant stare. He turned to find Dr. Harrison, the senior cardiologist on duty, stepping up to the glass beside him with a heavy clipboard cradled in his arm.
"Mr. Hart," the doctor began, his voice dropping into that smooth, clinical tone that doctors used when they were trying to soften a blow. "I appreciate you getting here so quickly. Your father had a very unstable night. His heart went into a severe state of arrhythmia."
Bret adjusted his jaw, his shoulders locking into a rigid, professional posture to mask the sudden spike of panic in his chest. "How severe, Doctor?"
"Severe enough that his heart isn't pumping blood effectively to the rest of his body," Dr. Harrison explained, tapping his pen against the clipboard. "In a patient of Stu's age, with his advanced chronic illness, an arrhythmia of this type is highly dangerous. It’s putting immense structural strain on his system. We’ve already started him on an aggressive, specialized intravenous drug therapy to try and regulate the electrical impulses of his heart."
"Will it work?" Bret asked, his voice tight, stripped of its signature calmness.
"We are monitoring him hour by hour, but the medication is just the first step," the doctor said, looking directly into Bret’s eyes with grim honesty. "If the drug treatment fails to stabilize the rhythm within the next few days, we won't have a choice. We will have to move forward with a surgical intervention. At the very least, he will require a complex pacemaker implantation, but given the blockage markers we're seeing, a more invasive bypass surgery might be necessary to fix the underlying damage."
The floor beneath Bret’s heavy boots felt like it was shifting. A surgical intervention. A cardiac ICU stay. He knew enough about the healthcare system to know that the numbers attached to those words were staggering. It wasn't just a matter of hundreds of dollars anymore; it was a mountain of debt that could easily crush his family’s remaining legacy into dust.
"I understand," Bret managed to say, his throat feeling incredibly dry. "Do whatever it takes to keep him stable, Doctor. Don't spare any resources."
"The hospital will proceed with the necessary protocols, Mr. Hart, but I must be frank with you," Dr. Harrison added, throwing a brief, pointed look toward the administrative stamps on Stu's intake file. "This level of specialized cardiac care, the continuous ICU monitoring, and a potential major heart surgery... the financial cost is astronomical. The clinic will require a substantial authorization hold from your insurance or your guarantor before we can clear him for the operating theater."
"The money won't be an issue," Bret stated firmly, though the words tasted like ash in his mouth. "The contract is fully secured. The guarantor will clear the bills."
Dr. Harrison offered a polite, sympathetic nod, noting something down on the chart before giving Bret a final word of reassurance and walking back toward the nurse's station.
Left alone in the quiet corridor, Bret let his head fall forward, his forehead pressing against the cool, sterile glass of the window. The crushing weight of reality was suffocating. He thought of his conversation in the estate, of JBL’s booming, paternalistic laugh, and the heavy, patronizing clap on his shoulder. Layfield Enterprises takes care of its own.
The doctor’s words had just locked the final bolt on Bret's golden handcuffs. He was no longer just an employee doing a job to clear his brother's debt; he was now entirely, irreversibly dependent on John Bradshaw Layfield's vast wealth to keep his father's heart beating. He couldn't afford to question the mansion's rules. He couldn't afford to have a conscience regarding Shawn Michaels. If JBL ordered him to be a warden, he would be the best damn warden in the city, because the alternative meant watching the man behind that glass slip away.
Bret took a deep, steadying breath, forcing his features back into a mask of unyielding stone. He straightened his dark jacket, turned away from the ICU window, and began the long walk down the corridor toward Owen’s room, needing to see the other patient who shared his father's fragile fate.
Bret pushed open the door to Owen’s recovery room, the soft click of the latch instantly drawing his brother's attention. Owen was propped up against a mountain of stiff hospital pillows, his injured body restricted by heavy medical bracing. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp, instantly reading the tight, pale tension locked into Bret’s jaw.
"You look like hell, Bret," Owen said, his voice quiet but carrying a familiar, grounding warmth. "I take it you just talked to Dr. Harrison?"
Bret pulled up a squeaky metal chair, sitting down heavily beside the bed. He loosened his tie a fraction, leaning his elbows on his knees as he rubbed his face with both hands. "Dad’s heart is failing, Owen. Severe arrhythmia. They’ve got him on a heavy drug cocktail, but if it doesn't stabilize his rhythm by the end of the week, he’s going to need major cardiac surgery. Either a pacemaker or a full bypass."
Owen let out a low, heavy breath, his gaze drifting toward the small window overlooking the grey city skyline. "And a surgery like that... it’s going to cost a fortune, isn't it?"
"Yes, the cost is… astronomical," Bret muttered, his voice flat. "The clinic won't even clear him for the operating room without a massive financial guarantee. If it weren't for Layfield, we’d be completely finished. I’d be signing papers to let him fade away because we couldn't afford the electricity to keep his monitors running."
Owen turned his head back, searching Bret’s face. He knew his brother better than anyone, and he could hear the suffocating, moral choking beneath the professional calm. "But there’s a catch. There’s always a catch with a guy like JBL. What’s going on in that house, Bret?"
Bret stared at his own calloused hands, the silence stretching between them for a long moment. He needed to say it out loud; he needed a neutral mind to help him make sense of the fragmented chaos he had witnessed over the last week.
"Everything about that marriage is twisted, Owen," Bret confessed, his voice dropping into a low, private murmur. "JBL gives him these heavy medications, claiming Shawn is volatile and self-destructive because of what his former bodyguard did to him. And Shawn... he acts like a brat. He’s sarcastic, rude, and ungrateful. He lives in this massive palace with infinite wealth, and he wastes his food, and he drinks himself into a complete stupor.”
Bret shook his head, a knot of pure frustration tightening his chest. "But then I watch him when the cameras stop flashing. He’s covered in these deep, angry bruises that JBL proudly calls 'his marks.' Shawn doesn't look like a spoiled model when the doors close, Owen. He looks like a wild animal cornered in a trap. He looks terrified. And the staff... Eddie and Rey... they look at me like I’m the monster holding the keys to his cage. But every time I start to think JBL is a predator, Bradshaw sits me down and explains everything with perfect logic. I can't put my finger on what’s wrong. It’s like I’m looking at a puzzle with half the pieces missing."
Owen listened intently, his expression solemn and deeply thoughtful. Being physically removed from the suffocating luxury of the Layfield estate allowed him to analyze the situation without the emotional distortion Bret was suffering through. But Owen was also pragmatic; he was a man trapped in a hospital bed, looking at his brother who was carrying the survival of their entire bloodline on his shoulders.
"Bret, look at me," Owen said, his tone dropping into a firm, unyielding seriousness. "You’re a good man, and you’ve always had a fierce moral compass. But right now, you can't afford to play detective. We are entirely broke without this contract. If you anger Layfield, if you push too hard or break protocol, he pulls the funding. Dad dies in that ICU, and Martha and the kids lose everything trying to pay for my recovery."
Bret swallowed hard, the cold truth of Owen's words settling like lead in his stomach.
"You can’t care how strange or volatile that marriage is, at least not while all your doubts are guesses," Owen continued, his eyes locked onto Bret's. "JBL’s official files say Shawn is traumatized, and the court of law locked Nash away. For now, you have to believe that narrative. You have to swallow your pride, put your sunglasses back on, and do exactly what you're paid to do. We need that man's checks to clear, Bret. For dad. For me. Just keep the kid safe, follow the rules, and don't get involved."
"I know," Bret whispered, standing up as the short visiting hour came to an end. He leaned over, gently patting Owen's uninjured shoulder. "I know, Owen. I'll handle it."
But as Bret walked out of the room, leaving his brother behind, his internal compass felt more broken than ever. Owen was right, the survival of the Hart family depended entirely on his compliance. He had to be the unyielding shadow. He had to enforce the rules. But as he thought of the absolute weightlessness of Shawn’s body in his arms that night, Bret had a terrifying, sickening feeling that the price of keeping his father’s heart beating was going to be the systematic destruction of Shawn Michaels' soul.
The drive back from the clinic was a blur of gray highway and heavy, suffocating silence. Eddie didn't press for details, merely keeping his dark eyes on the road, but the careful, smooth way he handled the vehicle felt like a quiet gesture of respect for Bret’s grief. When the black town car finally glided through the towering iron gates of the Layfield estate, the pristine white stone of the mansion felt less like a palace and more like a fortress.
Bret stepped out, adjusting his cuffs, and marched straight into the house. He didn't check the western wing. He didn't look for Shawn. His sole priority was the man who held his family's survival in his breast pocket.
He knocked firmly on the mahogany door of the home office.
"Come in, Mr. Hart," JBL’s booming voice called out.
The billionaire was sitting behind his desk, looking over a stack of corporate financial statements. He closed the folder as Bret stepped inside, his sharp eyes instantly reading the exhaustion carved into the bodyguard’s face. He gestured toward one of the leather chairs. "Sit down, Bret. Tell me about your father. How is the old man holding up?"
Bret remained standing, his hands clasped securely behind his back, forcing his voice into a steady, professional octave despite the tremor of anxiety in his chest. "He’s in a critical state, sir. His heart… he has a severe case of arrhythmia. Dr. Harrison has him on aggressive intravenous drug therapy, but if his rhythm doesn't stabilize by the end of the week, they will have to perform surgical intervention. He’ll need a complex pacemaker implantation or a full cardiac bypass."
JBL listened intently, his expression shifting from corporate neutrality into a deep, remarkably convincing look of paternal concern. He let out a long sigh, shaking his head. "Damn. That’s heavy news, pal."
Bret swallowed the lump in his throat, bracing himself for the hard part. "The clinic is requiring a massive financial guarantee before they can clear him for the operating theater, Mr. Layfield. The specialized ICU care and the surgery... the costs are astronomical. I wanted to verify the terms of our…"
"Stop right there, Bret," JBL interrupted, standing up from his leather chair and raising a thick, dismissive hand. He walked around the massive desk, his heavy boots clicking firmly against the hardwood floor until he stood right in front of the bodyguard.
JBL placed a massive, heavy hand on Bret’s shoulder. The pressure was firm, warm, and utterly suffocating, a physical reminder of absolute dependency.
"I told you before, Hitman: Layfield Enterprises takes care of its own," JBL said, his voice smooth, carrying a terrifyingly generous, comforting cadence. "You don't worry about a single dime. I will contact the hospital’s administrative board myself before the hour is up. My corporate account will issue a full financial guarantee for every single test, every night in the ICU, and whatever surgery your father needs to keep his heart beating. If he needs the best surgeon in the country, I'll fly him in. You have my word."
A massive, overwhelming wave of relief crashed over Bret’s chest, so intense it almost made his knees weaken. For a split second, the crushing weight of financial ruin was lifted from his shoulders. "Thank you, Mr. Layfield," Bret said, his voice thick with genuine gratitude. "I don't even know how to properly thank you for this."
"You don't have to thank me, pal. Just do your job," JBL grinned, his smile wide and bright, though it remained entirely detached from his cold, predatory eyes. He gave Bret’s shoulder one final, heavy pat before stepping back. "I bought the best protection detail in the country, and I expect results. You keep Shawn secure. You follow my schedule. You ensure he takes his medications and follows the rules. That’s all the thanks I need."
"Understood, sir," Bret replied, his professional mask locking back into place.
But as Bret walked out of the frozen office, the heavy mahogany door clicking shut behind him, the initial wave of relief evaporated, leaving behind a cold, rancid taste of entrapment. He was safe from financial ruin, but the golden handcuffs had just been welded shut. Every beat of his father's heart was now bought and paid for by the monster in that office.
He was officially JBL's most effective weapon, entirely bound by a debt of blood and survival, forced to guard a cage he could no longer afford to question.

When Shawn slowly blinked his eyes open, the heavy haze of the poppy root medicine had finally cleared, leaving his mind sharp, alert, and instantly in a state of mild shock.
He was no longer sitting crumpled in the torturous wooden chair. Instead, his slender frame was completely stretched out on Hunter’s massive, fur-lined stone bed. Because he had been heavily half-asleep when Rey and Eddie moved him, he hadn't realized just how close he had crawled to the Barbarian King. Shawn found himself folded securely against the Alpha's broad chest, his right arm resting over Hunter's uninjured shoulder, and his nose was still buried directly against the warm, pulse-point scent gland at the crook of the King's neck.
Shawn froze for a fraction of a second, his heart giving a sudden, fluttering leap. He expected his fierce McMahon pride to flare up, demanding that he scramble away from the brute immediately.
But it didn't.
Instead, as the deep, soothing aroma of freshly fallen rain filled his lungs, a soft, heavy wave of pure comfort washed over him. Beneath his cheek, his inner Omega was practically desperate to start purring, a sweet, vulnerable instinctual rumble that Shawn had spent his entire life actively suppressing. But looking at the massive warrior lying peacefully beneath him, Shawn found he didn't have the heart to fight that annoying part of his dynamic anymore.
He stayed perfectly still, his blue eyes tracing the sharp, rugged lines of his future husband's face. In the soft grey morning light, Shawn had to admit that Hunter was breathtakingly handsome. The thick blonde beard was neatly groomed, his strong jawline looked every bit as unyielding as the mountains, and his straight, long hair fell wildly across the fur pillows.
Shawn’s hand subtly tightened around the fabric of Hunter's blankets as the terrifying memories of the lakeside trap rushed back into his mind.
Hunter had saved him. The King of Kings had erupted through the fog like a devastating storm, completely ignoring his own safety, his own flesh being torn by blades, just to pull Shawn out of the jaws of Bischoff's vipers. And he had done all of that despite Shawn spending the last two weeks acting intentionally cold, aloof, and remarkably hard to get.
Lying there, listening to the steady, heavy beat of Hunter's heart, Shawn couldn't help but think about his parents back in the Western Alliance. He remembered King Vincent and Queen Linda. Their marriage was a cold, transactional affair constructed of polished stone and hollow courtly bows. Vincent looked at Linda as nothing more than a ledger entry, a submissive Omega queen to bear his heirs and look pristine at banquets. Shawn knew with absolute, heartbreaking certainty that if his mother had ever been cornered by assassins in the woods, Vincent Kennedy McMahon would have never picked up a sword to bleed for her. He would have simply calculated the political cost of her loss and moved on.
But Hunter... Hunter was entirely different. Beneath the crude armor and the rough mountain manners, this barbarian actually possessed the soul of a true protector. He treated his people with respect, he let his eccentric guards exist in peace, and he had nearly died to ensure Shawn remained unbroken.
Shawn let out a slow, quiet breath, his signature rose scent flaring with a soft, sweetening warmth that lazily mixed with the rain in the air. For the first time since he crossed the border, the thorns around his heart fully dropped. He didn't want to run away anymore.
Just as the realization settled deep into his chest, a low, rumbling groan vibrated through Hunter’s torso, and the massive Alpha’s green eyes slowly began to flutter open.
When Hunter’s green eyes fully fluttered open, the very first thing he saw was the piercing, impossibly deep blue of Shawn’s gaze looking directly down at him. For a long, breathless beat, the Barbarian King simply stared, completely captivated by the proximity, the heavy exhaustion in his body momentarily forgotten.
Before Hunter could even force a single word through his dry throat, Shawn offered a subtle, beautiful tilt of his chin.
"You know, this is extremely inappropriate by Western standards," Shawn murmured, his voice carrying a light, teasing tone that completely lacked any of his previous icy thorns.
Hunter blinked in surprise, a low, rumbling chuckle vibrating through his massive chest. "I’m not stopping you from leaving, prince," Hunter rasped back, a faint, genuine smirk touching his bearded lips. "But I think Rey would flat-out execute both of us if you tried to move that stitched leg without any help."
Shawn let out an intentionally loud, exaggeratedly dramatic sigh, rolling his blue eyes before lowering his upper body right back down. He rested his cheek securely against Hunter’s broad chest. "Oh, well. Looks like I’ll just have to stay right here, then."
A profound, beautiful warmth blossomed deep within Hunter’s chest. Slowly, carefully, he lifted his uninjured right hand and began to gently run his thick, calloused fingers through Shawn’s long, wavy blonde hair, softly untangling the stray curls.
Being enveloped in that safe, overwhelming scent of freshly fallen rain and receiving such a tender demonstration of affection was finally too much for Shawn's rigid defenses to hold back. He completely let his guard drop, allowing his most primal, instinctual side to take over. A soft, steady, and incredibly sweet purr rumbled deeply within Shawn's chest.
Hunter’s smirk widened into a bright, genuine smile, his green eyes darkening with pure, possessive adoration as he listened to his future husband finally accept his comfort.
"Can you two at least do that in private?" a dry, echoing boom cut through the quiet room from the darker corner of the medical wing. "There are other people stuck in this room as well, you know."
Hunter's face instantly flushed a bright, embarrassed red. His Alpha pheromones spiked with an awkward, sudden self-consciousness as he realized he had completely forgotten that the 7-foot knight was lying on a cot just a few feet away, watching the whole thing unfold.
Shawn, however, didn't look bothered in the slightest. He slowly lifted his face from Hunter’s chest, turning his head toward the giant knight. In a display that looked absolutely nothing like the proper, cold, and untouchable prince Hunter had seen over the last two weeks, Shawn crinkled his nose and childishly stuck his tongue out at Kevin Nash.
Kevin merely let out a low, deep rumble of laughter, shaking his head and adjusting his pillows as if this chaotic, playful behavior was an extremely common, everyday occurrence between the two of them back in the Western courts.
Watching Shawn chuckle, entirely relaxed and unburdened by the crushing weight of his royal title, Hunter felt the last bit of tension melt out of his own shoulders. The marriage alliance was a dangerous, political storm, but looking at the smiling prince resting against his chest, the King of Kings knew he had already won the only battle that truly mattered.
The cozy domesticity of the morning was softly interrupted as Rey Mysterio stepped back into the medical wing, his calming poppy scent signaling it was time for his rounds. He moved with the quiet efficiency of a practiced physician, checking each of his patients with precise care.
First, he approached the King’s stone table. Rey carefully peeled back the linens on Shawn’s calf, inspecting the neat silk stitches. Satisfied with how the skin was holding, he gently applied a fresh layer of the cooling poppy-root numbing cream to the purple bruise. Shawn let out a relieved breath as the burning ache faded into a dull numbness. Rey then shifted his focus to Hunter, inspecting the deep, jagged slice across the Alpha's chest before meticulously testing the strength in the King's left hand one more time.
"Reflexes are perfect, Hunter," Rey noted, wiping his hands on a clean cloth. "But keep that arm immobilized. I mean it."
Finally, Rey walked over to Kevin Nash’s cot. He gingerly pressed around the knight’s massive, bandaged joint. "The swelling has gone down significantly, Sir Kevin," Rey observed, offering a small nod of approval. "Your Alpha genetics are helping you heal fast. However, I still insist you use a firm support to walk for at least the next few days. No exceptions."
Right on cue, the heavy oak doors creaked open. Sean and Mankind walked into the medical wing, carefully carrying the freshly carved, custom crutch. Scott Hall strolled in right behind them, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Kevin with a lazy, knowing smirk as his heavy golden chains jingled.
"Look at this, Sir Kevin!" Sean said proudly, his sweet dandelion scent flaring with a bright, helpful energy as he held out the padded wooden device. "Mankind and I designed it just for your height! Me and Mankind can help you test it!"
Kevin scoffed, his stubborn pride flaring as he swung his massive legs over the edge of the cot. "I can test the damn thing myself," Kevin rumbled defensively, waving his large hand to brush Sean away as the boy tried to steady him. "I don't need a full audience just to take three steps."
Gritting his teeth, the 7-foot knight planted the crutch against the stone floor and forced his massive weight onto his good leg. He took one bold, arrogant step forward, but the cold mountain air had left the stones slick, and his bad knee locked up in a sharp spike of pain. Kevin’s balance gave out completely. His colossal frame began to tilt dangerously sideways, slipping toward the floor.
Before he could crash, a thick, muscular arm shot out from the shadows.
Scott Hall caught Kevin by the torso with an impressive display of raw Alpha strength, bracing his broad shoulders to completely arrest the giant knight's fall. Kevin’s face instantly flushed a deep, burning crimson. He braced himself, gritting his jaw as he waited for Scott to unleash a barrage of relentless mockery about his clumsy failure.
But the joke never came.
"Easy there, Big Daddy Cool," Scott muttered softly. His usual teasing, arrogant tone was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, steady gravity. He didn't laugh. Instead, Scott firmly gripped Kevin’s free arm, his thick, ring-adorned fingers locking around the knight's wrist with an iron-like but remarkably careful hold. "Take it slow, chico. The mountain stones don't care about your southern pride. Just lean on me."
Kevin stared down at the warrior, completely stunned by the sudden, fierce layer of protectiveness rolling off Scott's sea breeze musk. His rigid, stoic armor cracked just a little further, and he offered a silent, reluctant nod of agreement. With Scott firmly anchoring his left side and the crutch supporting his right, Kevin tried again. After a few tense, awkward attempts, the giant knight was successfully navigating the length of the room without much difficulty.
Over on the primary table, Hunter and Shawn shared a sudden, silent look, their green and blue eyes communicating a flawless, unspoken thought as they watched the two Alphas practically intertwined across the room. A subtle smirk touched Shawn's lips.
Later that afternoon, the quiet sanctuary of the ward was broken as Chyna, Ric Flair, Batista, and Randy Orton marched into the room to deliver their strategic updates.
"The mercenary with the crushed chest died a few hours ago," Chyna announced bluntly, her dark eyes serious as she stood at the foot of the bed. "His lungs gave out, just as Rey predicted. He never spoke."
"But the other snake had a few interesting things to say before his throat got dry," Randy Orton said, leaning against a stone pillar with a dark, predatory grin. He let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. "Though, I have to admit, it's damn hard to understand a single word coming out of his mouth. The poor bastard’s jaw is completely fractured in three different places. His teeth are practically floating in his gums." Orton flicked his green eyes toward Hunter, raising an eyebrow. "I have to hand it to you, boss. I knew your warhammer was devastating, but what you did to that one’s face. Absolute masterpiece."
Hunter frowned, looking genuinely confused. "I didn't hit any mercenary in the face. My hammer took the leader out, and I threw the others into the rocks."
"Oh I believe that one is my fault, Randy," Shawn intervened smoothly from his seat on the bed, a lazy, sweet smirk cutting through his features as his rose scent flared with a proud, defiant spark. "Right before he managed to corner me by the water, he overextended his guard. So I gave him a taste of my boot."
The entire room went dead silent. Randy Orton's jaw practically dropped, his eyes widening in profound shock as he stared at the slender southern prince. He had known the Omega could handle a dagger, but to cleanly shatter a trained mercenary’s jaw with a single raw counter-kick? That was an entirely different level of lethal agility. Batista let out a deep, booming laugh of pure respect, while Chyna simply smirked, thoroughly enjoying the sudden hit to Orton's Alpha pride.
While the war council continued to debate the looming threat of Eric Bischoff’s forces, the medical wing emptied out as Kevin Nash was ordered to get some movement to prevent his joint from freezing up.
Slowly and methodically, Kevin paced the long, torchlit corridors of the upper palace. Scott Hall walked right beside him, his heavy golden chains clinking rhythmically, his hand remaining subtly near Kevin's elbow just in case the knight faltered. Sean walked a few paces ahead, his sweet dandelion scent guiding their slow march.
When they neared the grand stone staircases leading toward the lower levels, Sean stopped. "Sir Kevin, Master Scott... I need to slip down into the royal kitchens to gather something for the evening," Sean murmured softly, offering a polite bow. "Please continue your walk. I will rejoin you shortly."
"Take your time, Kid," Scott winked, waving a dismissive hand as he leaned closer into Kevin's space, his sea breeze scent lazily swirling around the giant knight's cedar wood. "Mister knight here is doing just fine under my expert supervision."
Sean smiled and hurried down the stairs, his boots tapping quickly against the stone until he pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the bustling kitchens. The room was hot, smelling of roasting game and fresh bread. Standing near a large wooden prep table, organizing a spice rack, was Daniel Bryan.
The quiet, Omega helper looked up, his sharp eyes instantly crinkling with an amused smile when he saw the young valet slip into the room.
"You look bright today, Sean," Daniel noted softly, wiping his hands on his apron. "How is the prince’s knight holding up?"
"He's walking!" Sean whispered excitedly, leaning against the table, his dandelion scent sweetening with a sudden, gossipy warmth. "But Daniel... you should see them. Master Scott hasn't left his side all day. He caught Sir Kevin when he slipped, and he didn't even make a single joke about it! He was so gentle. I think... I think Master Scott is actually winning him over. The big knight's armor is completely melting."
Daniel let out a rich, genuine laugh, shaking his head as he reached beneath the counter. "Well, Alphas are stubborn, but Scott Hall has enough charm to break a stone wall."
Daniel then reached down and pulled out a large, clean white linen cloth, neatly tied at the top. Through the fabric, the sweet, tart aroma of baked sugar and fresh fruit immediately hit Sean’s nose. "Here. Just like you asked. I sneaked these out before the head cook could count the trays."
Sean untied the knot just an inch, his eyes lighting up as he saw a beautiful, neat pile of small, golden-crusted lemon tarts.
"Thank you so much, Daniel!" Sean breathed, quickly retying the linen and holding the precious bundle securely against his chest. His dandelion scent spiked with a sudden, shy, and deeply protective nervousness as he thought about the heavy, lonely giant waiting for him down in the darkest shadows of the stalls. He couldn't wait for the sun to drop so he could take them to Kane.

The first thing Shawn registered was the smell. It wasn’t the familiar, comforting stench of locker room sweat, body oil, and tape. It was sterile. Bleach and alcohol mixed with something metallic.
Then came the sound. A rhythmic, piercing beep... beep... beep... that vibrated straight through his skull, turning the headache behind his eyes into a roaring migraine.
Shawn tried to blink, but his eyelids felt stuck together. The fluorescent overhead lights pierced his retinas, forcing him to squeeze his eyes shut again. His throat was dry. When he tried to swallow, a dry cough caught in his chest, making his ribs ache.
Shawn forced his eyes open, squinting through the harsh glare. The room slowly came into focus.
A hospital room.
To his right, looming over the bed, was Hunter. His long blonde hair was tucked behind his ears, his face filled with exhaustion and worry. He looked pale, lines etched deeply around his eyes.
But Shawn’s gaze drifted past Hunter’s shoulder. Standing near the heavy door of the private room was Vince McMahon.
Vince was mid-sentence, gesturing with a sharp flick of his wrist, his jaw set in that rigid, businessman scowl. Hunter was leaning in, his arms crossed over his chest, listening intently. They were speaking in hushed, urgent tones. Shawn couldn't make out the words, just the low, rumbling vibration of their voices.
It felt wrong. The sight of them whispering in a corner while he lay broken in a bed triggered a sudden, icy spike of anxiety in Shawn’s chest. His heart rate spiked. The monitor beside him beeped faster.
Instantly, the whispering stopped. Hunter turned his head, his sharp eyes locking onto Shawn’s face. In a fraction of a second, the cold, calculating expression on Hunter’s face melted into pure, unadulterated relief.
"Shawn? Thank God," Hunter breathed, stepping closer and immediately cutting off Vince from Shawn's line of sight. Hunter’s large, calloused hand came down on Shawn’s shoulder, anchoring him to the mattress. "Don't try to move too fast. You had a hell of a night."
Vince didn't approach the bed. He stayed by the door, his hands slipping into his suit pockets. His eyes narrowed slightly, analyzing Shawn like he was evaluating damaged merchandise. "Good to see you awake, Shawn," Vince said, his voice carrying that theatrical, booming gravel even when he tried to lower it.
Before Shawn could ask what happened, the door clicked open. A doctor in a white lab coat walked in, holding a metal clipboard.
"Ah, Mr. Michaels. Wonderful to see you conscious," the doctor said, checking the monitors. "I am Dr. Vance. We need to run a few quick cognitive tests to check the extent of the concussion. Can you tell me your full name and the current year?"
Shawn swallowed hard, his voice a raspy whisper. "Shawn… Shawn Michaels. It's... 2002."
"Good," Dr. Vance nodded, making a note. "Do you know where you are?"
"A hospital. Phoenix? Or... New York?" Shawn frowned, the fog in his brain refusing to clear.
"We are in Greensboro," the doctor corrected gently. "Now, Shawn, what is the last thing you remember doing?"
Shawn closed his eyes, searching the dark rooms of his mind. "I... I came back," he muttered, a faint smile touching his lips. "Kevin... we were in the ring. The NWO. I cut a promo. I told everyone I was back. I was happy."
Hunter’s grip on Shawn’s shoulder tightened imperceptibly. Just a fraction of an inch, but Shawn felt the sudden, crushing weight of those fingers.
"And after that?" Dr. Vance pressed. "Do you remember the show last week? Do you remember the parking lot?"
Shawn’s mind hit a brick wall. A terrifying, hollow void. He knew there was something there, but it was like a black hole, he could only see black where his memory was supposed to be. He stared at the doctor, panic rising in his throat. "No. I... I don't. Did we have a pay-per-view? Hunter, did we work a match?" He looked up at his friend, pleading. "Why can't I remember?"
"Hey, hey, look at me," Hunter interrupted, shifting his body so Shawn could only see him. Hunter's thumb rubbed soothingly against Shawn's collarbone, a gesture so tender it felt almost suffocating. "Don't force it, Shawn. It’s okay."
Dr. Vance sighed, clicking his pen. "The scans show a severe concussion and localized swelling from the assault. Physically, your reflexes are intact, but your brain has suffered a massive shock. You cannot be left alone, Mr. Michaels. You need twenty-four-hour monitoring for at least the next month. Absolute rest. No stress, no loud environments, and absolutely no physical exertion."
Vince finally stepped forward, his eyes flashing with a sudden logistical calculation. "We can hire a private nurse, put him up in a hotel near Stamford…"
"No," Hunter cut in. His tone left absolutely no room for argument. He didn't even look back at Vince. His eyes remained fixed on Shawn’s pale face. "He’s coming home with me. I have the space, it’s isolated, and I can take care of him myself. Doctors orders are no stress, Vince. A hotel full of staff and corporate people isn't rest."
Shawn looked at Hunter, his heart swelling with warmth. In this terrifying world where his own mind was lying to him, Hunter was his rock. Hunter was safe.
"Are you okay with that, Shawn?" Dr. Vance asked.
Shawn nodded weakly, his eyes locked onto Hunter's green eyes. "Yeah. Yeah, I want to go with Hunter."
Behind Hunter’s back, Vince McMahon let out a short, quiet hum. He looked at Hunter’s rigid shoulders, then down at Shawn’s fragile, trusting expression. A slow, knowing smirk crept onto the boss's face. He knew exactly what Hunter was doing. And more importantly, he knew how much money a dramatic, codependent reunion would make when Shawn finally recovered.
"Fine," Vince said, turning toward the door. "Take care of our boy, Hunter. I’ll expect regular updates."
As the door clicked shut behind Vince and the doctor stepped out to prepare the discharge papers, Hunter leaned down. He pressed his forehead gently against Shawn's, his breath warm against Shawn's cheek.
"I've got you, Shawn," Hunter whispered, his voice thick with an intensity that made a cold, inexplicable shiver run down Shawn's spine. "I'm never letting anyone hurt you again."
Shawn closed his eyes, leaning into the touch. He felt safe. He felt loved.
So why did every instinct in his body want to scream?
Driving away from the hospital felt like successfully stealing a crown.
Hunter kept one hand on the steering wheel of his dark SUV, his eyes flickering between the empty highway and the passenger seat. Shawn was asleep, his head tilted awkwardly against the cold glass of the window. The pale afternoon sun hit his face, highlighting the bruises on his face and the dark, exhausted hollows under his eyes.
Look at him, Hunter thought, a dark, heavy knot tightening in his chest. So fragile. So small.
It was a terrifyingly addictive feeling. For years, Shawn Michaels had been the untouchable icon. The brash, brilliant, untouchable boy genius of the wrestling world who could break Hunter’s heart or make his career with a single nod. Hunter had spent the late 90s chasing Shawn's shadow, loving him so fiercely it bordered on sickness, while simultaneously wanting to tear him apart on the canvas to prove he was better.
Now, the icon was broken. And Hunter was the one who had done it.
Hunter's knuckles turned white on the leather steering wheel as he remembered the sound of Shawn’s head slamming against the window of that car in the parking lot. The sickening crunch of glass and bone. Hunter had hated him at that moment, hated Shawn for coming back, for trying to take the spotlight again, for acting like the four years he spent away hadn't changed the hierarchy. He had wanted to see Shawn bleed. He had wanted to ruin him.
But looking at Shawn now, curled up in the passenger seat, a different, sweeter sickness washed over Hunter. This was their second chance. The late 90s had been a blur of drugs, adrenaline, and a devastatingly intense closeness that they had both been too cowardly to turn into something real. Hunter wasn't going to let that happen again. This time, Shawn would be his. Mind, body, and soul.
Shawn stirred, a soft groan escaping his lips as his eyes fluttered open. He looked around the car interior, completely disoriented, before his eyes found Hunter. The panic in Shawn’s gaze melted away instantly, replaced by a heartbreakingly pure trust.
"Hey," Shawn rasped, his throat still dry. "Where are we?"
"Almost there," Hunter said, his voice dropping into that smooth, comforting tone he had practiced in the hospital. He reached across the console, his large hand capturing Shawn’s smaller, colder one. He squeezed it just tight enough to border on possessive. "Just a little further. My place is quiet. No fans, no cameras. Just rest."
Shawn squeezed back, leaning his head against the headrest, staring at their joined hands. "Hunter... my head. The hole is still there. I try to think about last week, and it’s just... black. Tell me what happened before the hospital. Please. I feel like I'm losing my mind."
Hunter’s chest swelled with power. He was about to become the sole author of Shawn Michaels' reality.
"You're not losing your mind, Shawn. You just had a bad accident," Hunter lied smoothly, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "After you cut that promo about coming back, things got chaotic. The locker room... they didn't take it well. And the NWO felt betrayed. Kevin and the rest of them, they turned on you, on us."
Shawn frowned, a shadow of pain crossing his face. "Kevin? Kevin wouldn't..."
"He did," Hunter interrupted quickly, sharpening his voice just enough to sound wounded. "They wanted to take over Raw, Shawn. You and I... we realized we only ever had each other. We decided to bring DX back, but before we could even make it official, someone attacked you in the parking lot. They caught you from behind. I found you."
Hunter glanced over, watching the lie sink in. He lied about the NWO. He lied about Kevin. He omitted the Pedigree in the ring. He omitted the fact that he was the one who drove Shawn’s face into the glass. He let Shawn believe they were two soldiers fighting the world together.
"I'm sorry I wasn't fast enough to stop them," Hunter murmured, his thumb rubbing circles on the back of Shawn’s hand.
"No... Hunter, don't say that," Shawn whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You're here now. You saved me."
Hunter smiled into the dark, a cold, victorious curve of his lips. Yes. I saved you.
An hour later, they pulled up to Hunter’s estate. It was a massive, secluded house surrounded by dense trees and a tall security fence. To anyone else, it was a luxurious mansion. To Hunter, it was the perfect cage.
Hunter walked around to the passenger side, opening the door and gently unbuckling Shawn. When Shawn tried to step out, his legs buckled, the severe concussion throwing off his balance.
Instantly, Hunter caught him. He scooped Shawn up into his arms, lifting him effortlessly. Shawn gasped, his instinctual reaction being to flinch away from the sudden movement, his body tensing hard against Hunter's chest. For a split second, Shawn's animal instinct recognized the hands that had hurt him.
Hunter felt the rejection, and a flash of raw, dangerous anger flared in his gut. He tightened his grip around Shawn, hard enough to bruise, forcing Shawn close against his chest.
"Relax," Hunter whispered near Shawn's ear, his tone dropping the gentle facade for a fraction of a second, revealing the dark authority underneath. "I've got you. Don't fight me."
Shawn blinked, confused by the sudden sharpness, but the exhaustion quickly took over. He let his head fall against Hunter’s shoulder, his body going soft. "Sorry. Just... dizzy."
"I know," Hunter murmured, his anger melting back into possessive satisfaction as he carried his prize up the steps and into the silent house. "You're safe now."
Hunter carried Shawn down the long, dimly lit hallway of the estate, the silence of the house swallowing the sound of his heavy footsteps. He opened the door to the master guest room. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn tight, blocking out the sun, leaving the room in a soft, amber twilight.
Gently, Hunter laid Shawn down on the massive king-sized bed. The crisp, white sheets crinkled under Shawn's weight.
As Shawn’s head hit the soft pillows, the shift in light caught his face, and Hunter felt a sickening thrill tighten in his chest. Up close, the damage he had inflicted was magnificent. A thick white bandage was taped squarely across Shawn’s forehead, hiding the split skin underneath. But it was his left eye that made Hunter’s breath hitch—it was horribly bruised, a deep, ugly shade of purple and black that stretched down to his cheekbone, swelling the eyelid nearly shut.
Shawn looked so small against the massive bed. The brash, loud "Heartbreak Kid" had been completely erased, replaced by this quiet, battered creature.
"God, Shawn," Hunter murmured, his voice a mix of genuine reverence and dark satisfaction. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the very edge of the purple bruise on Shawn's cheek. He pressed just hard enough to make Shawn wince, testing his power.
Shawn whimpered slightly, his good eye fluttering open, looking up at Hunter with a groggy, painful confusion. "Does it... look bad?"
"It looks like you survived a war," Hunter said softly, his hand moving from the bruise to smooth back Shawn's damp hair, his fingers lingering against his scalp. "But you don't have to look at it. You don't have to think about it. I’m going to take care of everything now."
Shawn swallowed hard, staring up at the high ceiling. The pain in his head was a living, breathing thing, pulsing right beneath the bandage. "My head feels like it's on fire, Hunter. The void... it hurts."
"I know. That’s why you’re going to rest," Hunter said, his voice dropping into a commanding, protective tone. He stood up, walking over to the nightstand where he placed a neat row of prescription bottles. He picked up two small amber vials. "The doctor gave me strict instructions. You have a heavy regimen of painkillers and sedatives to keep the brain swelling down. I’m putting myself in charge of your schedule."
He turned back to the bed, looking down at Shawn.
"I'm going to let you sleep for a bit now. But I'll be back in exactly two hours to check on you and give you your first dose. Don't get out of bed, Shawn. Don't try to walk. If you need anything… anything at all, you call for me. Understand?”
Shawn nodded weakly, his good eyelid already drooping from pure exhaustion. The absolute certainty in Hunter's voice was a relief. In a world where Shawn couldn't trust his own memory, having Hunter tell him exactly what to do felt like a lifeline.
"Thank you, Hunter," Shawn whispered, his voice turning small as he pulled the heavy duvet up to his chin, seeking comfort. "For not leaving me."
Hunter paused at the edge of the bed, staring at the fragile shape of the man he loved and hated all at once. A cold, victorious smile spread across his face in the shadows.
"I'm never leaving you, Shawn," Hunter whispered back into the quiet room. "Never again."
He stepped out, closing the heavy wooden door behind him with a soft, final click, locking his prize away from the world.

The long walk back down the grand staircase felt entirely different this time. The absolute weightlessness of Shawn's body was still ghosting against Bret's arms, a terrifying reality check that refused to leave his mind. He adjusted his cuffs, his jaw tight as he approached the heavy mahogany doors of JBL's private office.
"Come in, Mr. Hart," JBL’s deep, booming voice echoed from within.
Bret stepped into the freezing, cigar-scented room. Layfield had already shed his tuxedo jacket, sitting behind his massive desk with a fresh glass of scotch. The harsh glare of the desk lamp cast deep, villainous shadows across his heavy features, but the moment he looked up at Bret, his face instantly shifted into an expression of profound, weary gratitude.
"Pour yourself a drink if you’d like, Hitman. You’ve earned it tonight," JBL said, sighing heavily as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I want to personally thank you for how you handled the situation in the ballroom. You moved quickly, quietly, and you kept a minor disaster from turning into a public relations nightmare."
"Just doing my job, sir," Bret replied, standing at perfect attention, his face an unreadable wall of stone.
"I owe you an apology, Bret," Layfield continued, his tone dropping into a remarkably soft, paternal tone. He leaned forward, interlocking his thick fingers over the desk. "I should have warned you before we left for the gala. Shawn has an incredibly severe, destructive problem with alcohol. Ever since the... trauma with Nash, he seeks out any bottle he can find to numb his anxiety. And when you mix hard liquor with the heavy medications he’s prescribed? It’s a volatile explosion. He turns into a complete stranger."
Bret listened, his analytical mind processing the explanation. It made perfect sense on paper. It perfectly explained the dramatic mood swings in the restroom, the sudden switch from petulance to intense sadness, and the physical sickness. John Bradshaw Layfield was playing the part of the long-suffering, protective husband beautifully. He had learned from his past mistakes; he knew that getting too comfortable and distant with Kevin Nash was exactly what had allowed the previous bodyguard to become dangerously entangled with Shawn. JBL was determined to keep Bret strictly on his side of the narrative.
Layfield took a slow sip of his scotch, his eyes narrowing slightly as he watched Bret's neutral expression. "I also noticed you were standing nearby when Chief Calaway and I were speaking about Officer Cena."
Bret didn't flinch, but his internal radar went on high alert. "I was securing the immediate perimeter, Mr. Layfield."
JBL let out a dry, hollow laugh, waving his hand in dismissal. "No need to be defensive, pal. I like a man who keeps his ears open. But I want to clear the air so there are no misunderstandings. John Cena was one of the responding officers on the night Kevin Nash kidnapped my husband. He’s a rookie: young, incredibly stubborn, and full of that naive, self-righteous crusader complex."
The businessman leaned back in his leather chair, a look of grim amusement crossing his face. "Cena formed a ridiculous, conspiracy-style hypothesis about the case early on, and he simply refuses to admit he was wrong. Even after a federal judge looked at the mountain of evidence and threw Nash into a maximum-security cell, Cena still won't let it go. He constantly harasses my company, hounds my associates, and refuses to leave Shawn in peace, trying to force a victim to relive his worst nightmare just to satisfy his own ego. That's why Chief Calaway had to step in. To protect my family from a rogue cop's obsession."
A heavy, suffocating wave of conflict crashed over Bret’s chest.
He stood silently in the middle of the luxurious room, his internal compass spinning wildly out of control. He felt completely stuck in a psychological vice. Every single time he spent a few hours away from JBL, the world around him seemed to scream that this billionaire was a monster. The anxious, protective looks from Eddie; the deep, nauseating disgust in Rey’s eyes; the gentle, desperate care Hunter had shown in the restroom, everyone acted like Shawn was a hostage locked in a dungeon.
Yet, every single time Bret thought he finally understood the dark reality of this house, John Bradshaw Layfield appeared out of the shadows with a perfectly logical, completely reasonable corporate explanation to smooth the wrinkles away. JBL always had an answer. He always had a narrative that painted Shawn as the self-destructive victim and himself as the sole protector.
"I understand the situation completely, Mr. Layfield," Bret said quietly, his voice carrying a subtle trace of the immense fatigue draining his bones.
"Good man," JBL grinned, standing up to clap Bret firmly on the shoulder, the heavy pressure of his hand a silent reminder of who owned the checks keeping Stu and Owen alive. "Go get some rest, Hitman. Tomorrow is a new day, and our boy is going to need a very firm hand to recover from tonight's little stunt."
Bret offered a short nod and walked out of the office, the heavy click of the mahogany door sealed the billionaire inside his frozen office, but the cold weight of his words followed Bret down the dim, vaulted corridor.
As Bret made his way toward the eastern wing, his shoes echoing hollowly against the marble, he passed the kitchen. A single, low-wattage bulb was left burning over the island. Rey was there, his back to the door, slowly and meticulously hand-washing a set of crystal glasses in absolute, heavy silence. He didn't turn around when Bret passed, but the stiffening of the butler’s shoulders in the dim light was enough to tell Bret that the invisible borders of the house had reset.
Upstairs, Bret didn't sleep well. Every time the heavy summer wind rattled the high windows, he found himself checking the corridor, his eyes instinctively drifting toward the master suite where Shawn was being kept.
The following day brought an eerie, heavy quiet to the Layfield estate. Shawn remained locked away inside his dark bedroom, suffering from what Bret assumed was a massive, brutal hangover. It didn't surprise Bret in the slightest after the display at the ballroom, but what did begin to grate on his nerves was Rey’s reaction to it.
Every time Bret paced the upper corridor, he saw the butler hovering near Shawn’s door, his features pinched with an intense, agonizing worry. Rey spent the afternoon brewing herbal teas, preparing light broths, and moving through the house with the fragile anxiety of a father waiting outside an operating room.
Bret watched from the shadows, a prickle of irritation tightening his jaw. He genuinely believed that Rey and Eddie were good, honest people, he had felt that connection during their dinner in the kitchen. But right now, Bret couldn't help but feel that Shawn was actively exploiting their kindness. To Bret’s rigid moral compass, Rey shouldn't be coddling him. Shawn was sick as a direct consequence of his own reckless, self-destructive choices. In the Hart house, if you stayed out late and drank yourself into a stupor, you dealt with the morning misery on your own. You didn't have the domestic staff mourning over your bedside.
Bret leaned his shoulder against the hallway wall, his arms crossed over his chest as he stared at the polished mahogany of Shawn’s door. His perception of the household was entirely fragmented, a messy puzzle with half the pieces missing.
He could clearly see Shawn’s downward spiral, but he couldn't fathom the root cause of it. From where Bret stood, Shawn Michaels had everything the world could offer. He was a highly successful, breathtakingly famous luxury model. He was married to a powerful, self-made billionaire who, despite a dominant personality, seemed genuinely invested in keeping him safe, healthy, and out of the tabloids.
Bret knew there was a suffocating tension vibrating through the halls of this mansion. He had felt the icy shifts in the atmosphere, and he had seen the microscopic cracks in the couple’s dynamic. But he couldn't put his finger on what exactly was broken. For all Bret knew, this volatile friction, the heavy medications, and Shawn’s frantic escape attempts could easily be the tragic, lingering aftermath of the kidnapping. A severe trauma response to whatever horrific things Kevin Nash had done to him before the police dragged him away.
After all, Bret didn't actually know Shawn Michaels. He had no context for the man's life. He knew the sparse, sterile details listed on the agency's official intake file, and he knew the dark, protective narrative John Bradshaw Layfield had laid out across his desk. He was guarding a stranger wrapped in a billionaire's whispers, completely blind to the fact that the self-destruction he was witnessing wasn't a choice, it was the slow, agonizing asphyxiation of a soul trapped in a golden cage.
The days that followed brought a deceptive, fragile stillness to the estate. Shawn’s modeling calendar remained blank, and JBL’s directives were executed with military precision: Shawn was to remain inside the perimeter.
Bret spent those long, sweltering afternoons adapting to the heavy monotony of high-profile domestic confinement. He stood like a dark monument under the shade of the patio, watching Shawn slide effortlessly through the turquoise water of the infinity pool. Stripped of his cosmetics, Shawn looked incredibly pale beneath the blinding sun. Bret watched him spend hours in the private gym, pushing his body through grueling cardio routines with a fierce, quiet desperation that looked less like fitness and more like a punishment.
When the heat became too oppressive, Shawn would retreat to the living room, drowning out the silence of the house by flipping through superficial reality TV shows.
To Bret, it still looked like a life of unearned, stagnant privilege. But the cracks in the luxury were becoming impossible to ignore. Two days into the lockdown, Bret was checking the courtyard security feeds during a summer storm, when a sudden, loud crack of thunder shook the house. In the living room, Shawn violently threw himself off the sofa, his hands clawing at his ears as he hit the floor, his breathing ragged and wild before he realized where he was. Later that same night, after JBL had spent hours locked inside the master suite with his husband, Shawn didn't emerge for thirty-six hours. Rey would simply carry trays of food up to the dark room, returning with them entirely untouched, his face carrying the grim, hollow exhaustion of a man watching a slow execution.
Trauma, Bret reminded himself every time his gut twisted with doubt. It's just the aftermath of what Nash did. He clung to the official files like an anchor, rationalizing the nightmares, the tremors, and the erratic behavior through the billionaire's careful whispers. He had to believe it. Because the alternative was too dangerous to contemplate.
The fragile illusion of Bret's control shattered on Thursday morning.
He was standing in the foyer when his personal cell phone buzzed violently against his chest. Seeing the caller ID of his father’s hospice facility, Bret's professional mask cracked. He pressed the receiver to his ear, his spine going rigid as the nurse’s hurried, clinical voice explained that Stu’s heart had faltered during the night. He was being rushed to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Owen was already there, but he was trapped in his own recovery bed, a patient, much like their father.
"Is everything alright, Mr. Hart?"
Bret turned sharply, his knuckles white around the phone, to find JBL standing at the top of the stairs. The tycoon was smoothing down the lapels of a fresh linen suit, his corporate eyes locking onto Bret’s pale face with the calculating precision of a hawk.
"My father," Bret managed, his voice tighter than usual, stripping away his signature calmness. "He’s been moved to the ICU. I need to get to the clinic, sir."
JBL didn't hesitate. He descended the stairs with a heavy, deliberate stride, placing a massive, firm hand on Bret's shoulder. The pressure was heavy, disarmingly warm, yet carries the suffocating reminder of absolute control. "Family comes first, Bret. Don't even worry about the clock. Layfield Enterprises takes care of its own." JBL flicked his eyes toward the front doors, raising his voice slightly. "Eddie! Get the town car ready. You’re driving Mr. Hart to the hospital immediately."
As Bret walked out into the shimmering, brutal summer heat to climb into the back of the sleek black car, the golden handcuffs felt tighter than ever before.
The drive to the hospital was entirely silent. Staring out the tinted window at the grey, working-class streets of the city center, Bret felt a bitter, heavy exhaustion draining his bones. His life had been a relentless, exhausting battle; a constant fight to protect his siblings, to pay the mounting bills, to keep his family’s legacy from drowning in debt. He had given his blood, sweat and tears for every single inch of ground he owned.
And back in that massive, white-stone palace, Shawn Michaels was currently lounging by a pool, surrounded by infinite wealth, wasting his safety away in a petulant loop of self-destruction.
Bret adjusted his jaw, his eyes darkening as Eddie finally pulled up to the sterile, concrete entrance of the ICU. He was going to do whatever it took to keep the checks clearing, completely blind to the fact that his own resentment was the very blindfold keeping him from seeing the hostage drowning in the cage.

The first rays of dawn had not yet managed to breach the thick mountain fog, leaving the medical wing cloaked in a soft, grey twilight. Inside, the only sounds were the steady crackle of the dying hearth and the rhythmic, quiet breathing of the room’s occupants.
When King Hunter Hearst Hemsley opened his eyes, he felt as though he had been trampled by a herd of mountain bulls. His body was completely drained of strength, a heavy, throbbing ache pulsed behind his temples, and his lips felt cracked and parched.
As he tried to shift his weight, he felt a strange, comforting warmth anchored to his right side.
Hunter tilted his head slightly, his green eyes widening as his gaze landed on Shawn. The southern prince was fast asleep, his face looking remarkably soft and peaceful in the dim morning light. Shawn’s slender fingers were tightly tangled with Hunter’s massive right hand, clinging to him even in his sleep. Hunter’s natural Alpha instincts flared with a sudden, overwhelming surge of protectiveness, and a desperate desire to run his fingers through Shawn’s long blond curls hit him. But as he tried to lift his hand, his muscles refused to obey, the severe blood loss leaving him entirely paralyzed.
Hunter gritted his teeth and attempted to sit up, but a sharp, agonizing flare of pain ripped across his stitched chest and a sudden wave of intense dizziness washed over his vision, forcing him to sink heavily back into the fur pillows with a groan, his breathing ragged.
Before he could try again, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the darker corner of the room.
Hunter’s head snapped toward the sound. Sitting up on his cot across the room, holding the small silver bell Rey used to summon medical assistance, was Kevin Nash. The 7-foot knight looked exhausted, but his dark eyes were steady as he looked at the King.
"The doctor asked me to ring it and warn him when you woke up," Kevin rumbled, his deep cedar wood scent rolling off him in a calm, unthreatening wave.
Hunter didn't answer. He merely offered a tight, weak nod of his head, his gaze immediately drifting back down to Shawn.
Now that his head was clearer, Hunter realized the position Shawn was in couldn't possibly be comfortable. The prince was practically folded in half, his body twisted in a completely unnatural angle so that his stitched left calf could remain safely elevated on a wooden stool, all while his torso leaned precariously over the edge of the chair to remain buried against Hunter’s arm.
As Hunter stared at the sleeping prince, Kevin’s deep voice cut through the quiet room once more.
"They had to tear him away from you so Rey could give you stitches, you know?" Kevin noted softly, his eyes softening as he watched Shawn. "The kid was completely frantic. He was screaming at you to wake up, fighting Eddie and Sean like a trapped animal. This... this ridiculous chair setup was the compromise Rey and Shawn reached because he flat-out refused to leave your side."
Kevin paused, his cedar scent turning thick with a raw, deeply emotional layer of gratitude. He looked Hunter dead in the eye, dropping any trace of knightly armor. "Thank you, Hunter. For saving him."
The thought of losing Shawn, the person he had protected for so long, his best friend even though their status was so different, frightened the giant knight terribly, and his sincerity hung heavy in the quiet room.
Hunter tried to respond, but his throat felt like it was filled with dust. He swallowed hard, coughing twice before he managed to force a rough, heavily raspy whisper through his bearded lips. "It's my fault."
Kevin frowned, shaking his head. "Hunter, you couldn't have known…"
"No," Hunter interrupted, his deep voice cracking with a heavy wave of genuine, painful guilt as his rain scent flared with a somber, quiet drizzle. "If I hadn't let my stupid Alpha pride get the better of me... if I hadn't targeted your bad knee in the courtyard just to show off... you would have been out there on the lake with him. He wouldn't have been alone. Shawn is hurt... because of my arrogance."
Kevin stared at the Barbarian King, deeply touched by the absolute honesty in the man’s confession. He offered a soft, sincere smile, his tone turning remarkably comforting. "Maybe. Maybe not, King Hunter... we don't know. The vipers back home had flawless information; they might have brought twenty Alphas instead of eight if I was there. We can't change what's already done. What matters now is that you arrived in time, and you saved his life."
Before Hunter could process the comforting words, the inner door swung open, and Rey Mysterio stepped into the room. The chief doctor was still wearing his loose, simple sleeping robes, but his sharp eyes were completely alert. He carried a large horn cup filled with cool water, immediately walking over to the King’s table and gently lifting Hunter’s head to help him drink.
"Drink up, my King," Rey instructed gently, his soothing poppy scent instantly calming the room. "You lost a dangerous amount of blood on that trail. You need to rehydrate immediately."
Hunter drank greedily, the cool liquid soothing his burning throat. Once the cup was empty, Rey carefully pulled away the linens from Hunter's left arm, examining the neat rows of silk stitches. "Move your fingers for me, Hunter. Good. Does it burn here? Do you feel any numbness?"
Rey meticulously tested the strength in Hunter's large hand, ensuring that the mercenary's broadsword hadn't severed any vital nerves or tendons. Once he was completely satisfied with the reflexes, the doctor let out a soft sigh, crossing his arms.
"The structures are intact, but you are on strict orders, Hunter. You are confined to this bed for the next week, and this left arm must remain completely immobilized in a sling to ensure those deep stitches don't rip open. If you try to swing a warhammer anytime soon, I will have Chyna chain you to the throne."
Hunter didn't argue. His green eyes flicked back down to the blonde head resting against his bicep. "Can Shawn lay with me?" Hunter asked, his raspy voice dropping to a quiet, soft plea. "His position... it looks terrible. It's going to ruin his back."
Rey stopped, looking down at Prince Shawn’s twisted frame, and then back at the King’s earnest, protective expression. A soft, knowing smile cut through the doctor’s features, and he offered a gentle nod. "It is a terrible position. And since neither of you is allowed to walk, this is probably the most practical solution to keep you two from moving around."
Rey stepped toward the door and called softly into the adjoining room. Within seconds, Eddie Guerrero slipped into the wing, looking sleepy but ready to help. Together, Rey and a softly grinning Eddie carefully stepped over to the chair. They gently scooped up Shawn’s slender frame, ensuring his bandaged calf remained perfectly supported and unbothered as they lifted him onto the massive, fur-lined stone bed right beside Hunter.
Shawn groaned softly, his blue eyes fluttering open for a split second. He was still heavily sedated by Rey's poppy root medicine, completely half-asleep and disoriented. But the moment his body met the familiar, large frame of his future husband, Shawn’s instincts took over.
Without a single drop of his usual pride, Shawn instinctively wiggled closer, burrowing his face directly into the scent gland at the crook of Hunter's neck. He let out a long, deeply contented sigh, inhaling the comforting, peaceful aroma of freshly fallen rain, using the Alpha’s presence to anchor himself against the lingering nightmares of the lake.
Within seconds, Shawn’s breathing stabilized, and he dropped right back into a deep, peaceful slumber.
Hunter felt a profound, beautiful warmth blossom in his chest. Carefully wrapping his uninjured right arm around Shawn's waist, pulling the smaller blond securely against his broad chest, Hunter buried his nose into Shawn's soft, blonde curls, letting the sweet aroma of roses fill his senses.
Wrapped in each other’s presence, the King and the Prince finally closed their eyes, falling back into a deep, healing sleep as the morning light slowly began to wash over the mountains.
While the King and the Prince slept in a deep, peaceful embrace, a grim and urgent war council assembled in the shadowed far corner of the medical wing. Chyna, Scott, Kevin Nash, Batista, Randy Orton, and the New Age Outlaws stood in a tight circle, their scents clashing in a heavy mix of leather, steel, and muted anxiety.
"Alright, let's hear it," Chyna commanded in a hushed tone, her dark eyes scanning the room. "What did we pull from the lakeside?"
"Out of the eight western bastards Hunter dismantled, only two survived the clearing," Batista revealed, his massive arms crossed as he leaned against a stone pillar. He gestured subtly toward a curtained cot at the back of the wing. "One is practically a corpse already. Hunter’s hammer completely crushed his sternum. Rey’s been working on him since last night, but the he says his lungs are failing. He won't make it through the next sunset, and even if he wakes up, his chest is too mangled to utter a single word."
"What about the other one?" Kevin Nash asked, his deep voice rich with suspicion.
"He's mostly intact," Randy Orton said, a dark, dangerous smirk flitting across his sharp features. "We found him closer to the water's edge, nursing a severely fractured jaw and a massive boot-print bruise on his face." Orton didn't realize it was Shawn's precise counter-kick that had left that mark, but he appreciated the damage. "Unfortunately, his tactical information is incredibly scarce. He’s just a low-level muscle piece. All he knows is that Lord Eric Bischoff is footing the bill and that the primary objective had strictly shifted: they were ordered to take Prince Shawn alive, no matter the cost."
Billy Gunn stepped forward, tossing a heavy leather satchel onto an empty table with a muted thud. "Their gear backs up his story. Look at this trash. Every single one of them was carrying heavy binding ropes, and the majority had clubs and quarterstaffs tucked into their belts alongside their broadswords. They weren't equipped for a slaughter. They were equipped for a kidnapping."
"We also pulled this off the leader's corpse," Road Dogg added, pulling out a crumpled, heavily blood-stained piece of parchment. "It’s a direct order, but most of it is illegible from the gore. The only clear parts explain the sudden change of plans, stressing that the prince was to be taken alive to a secondary location, and a very explicit, handwritten warning at the bottom: The Omega is experienced in close combat. Do not underestimate his speed."
The lack of deeper intelligence was deeply frustrating. Scott Hall shifted his weight, the heavy golden chains around his neck jingling softly as he narrowed his eyes at Orton. "Are we absolutely sure the awake one isn't holding out on us, Randy? A guy like that might be playing dumb."
Orton let out a low, mocking chuckle. "Trust me, Hall. He sang like a little bird the moment I pressed my dagger against his throat. The vipers who hired them probably didn't share any real secrets with a grunt like him precisely because he was so damn easy to make talk."
Before they could delve deeper into the mystery of the internal leak, the heavy oak doors of the medical wing burst open.
Ric Flair practically stumbled into the room, his face a bright, frantic red, his breath hitching as he clutched a fresh batch of intelligence scrolls. He was a complete pile of nerves, his extravagant robes fluttering wildly as he prepared to scream about the impending political disaster, but the words died instantly in his throat.
Flair froze dead in his tracks, his eyes bulging as he stared at the primary stone table.
There, bathed in the soft morning light, was the mighty King of Kings, sleeping peacefully with his uninjured arm wrapped securely around the southern prince. Shawn was completely buried against Hunter's torso, his nose tucked directly into the Alpha's neck gland, their scents of rain and roses beautifully mingled in the quiet air.
The gathered warriors watched Flair’s absolute, comical shock, and a sudden wave of humor cut through the heavy paranoia of the room.
"Well... looks like the poem worked, Flair," Scott Hall drawled with a lazy smirk, raising an eyebrow at the advisor.
Batista let out a silent, shaking laugh, Orton snickered and even Chyna and Kevin Nash couldn't fight off a faint, amused smile. The political situation was still a dangerous nightmare, but looking at the two blonde royals finally at peace, the court refused to let themselves be entirely consumed by the darkness.
Down in the lower stables, a vastly different but equally important project was underway. The cold mountain wind whistled through the wooden slats, but the large back stall was filled with a rare, comforting warmth.
Mankind, Goldust, Sean, and Kane were gathered around a massive wooden workbench covered in wood shavings and iron brackets. Goldust was leaning against a hay bale, his painted face completely illuminated with dramatic delight as he sighed breathlessly.
"Oh, the raw, visceral romance of it all!" Goldust purred, his fingers fluttering in the air. "The King pouring his royal blood onto the snow to shield his beautiful, thorny prince... and now they sleep, intertwined like the ancient legends of old. It is simply divine!"
"Just make sure the King doesn't bleed on my stable, Goldie," Mankind chuckled in his raspy, eccentric voice, though his wide eyes behind his leather mask were warm. He turned his attention back to the piece of thick oak he was carving. "But the big knight... oh, the poor giant knight needs our help. Mankind cannot have Sir Kevin limping around the stones like a broken horse."
Sean was standing right beside him, his sweet dandelion scent flaring with a bright, focused energy. He had been helping Mankind design Kevin’s walking aid all morning, but the traditional canes were far too small for the 7-foot Alpha.
"Mankind, wait," Sean whispered, his eyes lighting up with a brilliant idea as he pointed to the wood. "A regular cane will force Sir Kevin to lean his entire body weight to one side, and his wrists will get tired. What if we carve it taller? Like a half-crutch? We can put a curved padded brace right beneath his armpit. That way, he can support his massive weight with his upper arm, keeping his hand completely free."
Mankind blinked behind his mask, thoroughly impressed by the young valet's tactical design. "Oh, the little bird has a clever mind! Yes, yes! A crutch for a giant! But we need to test the measurements... we need a model."
Both Sean and Mankind simultaneously turned their heads to look at the shadows behind them.
Kane was standing there, his colossal, heavily burned frame looming over them like an iron mountain. The silent Alpha didn't say a single word, his dark, hollow eyes watching them intently. He didn't mind being used as a test subject at all. In fact, he quietly stepped forward into the light, lifting his massive, bandaged left arm and allowing Sean to press the wooden prototype against his side to measure the height.
Sean’s cheeks instantly flushed a beautiful, soft pink as his hands lightly brushed against Kane’s skin, his dandelion scent sweetening considerably. Kane remained absolutely still, his heavy breathing slowing down as he listened attentively to the three of them talk, his protective Alpha aura providing a silent, unbreakable shield over the small Omega valet who had shown him nothing but kindness.
I was so happy this last few weeks, I had been accepted into a masters program, I got over my writer's block, I was legit getting into a better mental state.
And then this last week happened and now I may have Crohn's disease (and here in Brazil the Crohn's disease meds are almost 11.000 reais which is insane) and may be unable to go into the masters program due to financial reasons outside my control.
I hope this doesn't get me back into a writers block, because writing is legit something that makes me happy

The heavy iron gates of the mountain fortress had always been a barrier against the outside world, but they could not stop the biological tide of a King’s distress. Long before the heavy thud of running boots could be heard echoing up the trail, the air inside the courtyard shifted violently.
The scent of freshly fallen rain arrived first, but it was no longer the clean, crisp aroma the castle was used to. It came rolling over the stone walls like a suffocating, shattered tempest, thick with a frantic, blinding panic and the unmistakable, metallic undertone of an Alpha’s life force bleeding out.
Inside the main barracks, Chyna stopped dead in her tracks, her hand freezing on the leather strap of her armor. Her sharp Alpha instincts screamed a terrifying, immediate warning. Beside her, Batista dropped his training axe, his massive frame locking up as his own scent flared defensively. They didn't need a scout to tell them what was happening. Their King was in mortal danger.
"Move!" Chyna roared, and together with Batista, they sprinted out of the barracks, throwing the heavy wooden doors open as they rushed into the cobblestone courtyard.
Down in the lower stalls, Sean had been helping Mankind organize fresh hay when the violent wave of Hunter's panicked pheromones slammed into the stables, immediately followed by the sharp, terrifying scent of Shawn's spilled roses. The young valet completely froze, a wave of absolute, crippling panic washing through his dandelion scent as his hands began to tremble. For a terrifying few seconds, his mind flashed back to the day his childhood village was sacked. But as he caught the distant sound of Hunter's ragged breathing, Sean bit his lip, forced his fear down, and scrambled out of the barn, sprinting across the stones to find Rey Mysterio.
When King Hunter finally breached the courtyard gates, the sight sent a shockwave of horror through the gathered guards.
The Barbarian King was drenched in crimson, his long blonde hair matted with sweat and dirt. He was breathing in agonizing, shallow gasps, his massive arms locked in a fierce, iron-grip around Prince Shawn’s frame, holding the smaller blond securely against his chest as if the entire world would collapse if he let go. Shawn was pale, his black riding pants soaked through with blood from the jagged sword gash on his calf, but he was completely conscious, his hands desperately clutching Hunter's broad shoulders to try and keep the King steady.
"Hunter! Stop running! Put me down!" Shawn pleaded, his voice cracking with a desperate, heavy worry as he felt the King's steps begin to falter.
"Hunter!" Chyna screamed, sprinting across the cobblestones alongside Batista, Randy Orton, and a wide-eyed Scott Hall.
The moment Hunter reached the center of the courtyard, the adrenaline that had fueled his frantic sprint up the mountain trail completely evaporated. The severe loss of blood from the deep, gaping wound on his left arm and the jagged slice across his chest finally caught up to him. His vision blurred, his massive knees buckling beneath his weight.
With a low, pained grunt, the King of Kings collapsed hard onto the stone floor, his strength giving out entirely. Yet, even as his consciousness began to slip away, his protective instincts remained unyielding; he twisted his body as he fell, absorbing the impact against the stones himself to ensure Shawn wouldn't be harmed, his bleeding arms still wrapped tightly around the prince in a fierce embrace.
"Hunter!" Shawn cried out, tumbling out of the King's loosened grip, his injured leg flaring with agony as he frantically crawled right back over to the fallen Alpha's side. Shawn’s hands flew to Hunter’s face, his heart hammering in pure terror as he saw the King's green eyes rolling back. "Hunter, look at me! Keep your eyes open, you idiot! Stay with me!"
"Get the stretchers! Now!" Batista bellowed, his voice echoing like thunder across the courtyard as he and Randy Orton rushed forward, carefully lifting the massive, unconscious King off the stones.
Chyna was instantly at Shawn's side, her powerful arms gently but firmly lifting the southern prince to his feet, ensuring he didn't put any weight on his bleeding calf. Scott Hall hovered just behind them, his usual cínico smirk completely gone, his dark eyes tight with a lethal, quiet gravity as his sea breeze scent turned sharp with anxiety.
Within seconds, the courtyard was a blur of frantic motion as the elite guards carried both the unconscious King and the fiercely protesting prince toward the warm, lavender-scented sanctuary of the medical wing. The temporary peace of the mountains had officially bled out, and the true cost of their alliance was starting to be written in blood.
The moment the heavy wooden doors of the medical wing burst open, the chaotic vortex of blood and panic was met by a sharp, unyielding command.
Rey Mysterio didn't flinch at the sight of his bleeding, unconscious King or the frantically screaming southern prince. He stepped into the center of the room, and his delicate poppy scent immediately flared, not with submissive fear, but with a deep, grounding, and crystalline authority that acted like a soothing balm against the room's suffocating tension. In an instant, the gentle doctor transformed into an absolute general.
"Put the King on the primary table! Shawn, onto the empty cot right now!" Rey commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, military precision. He turned his sharp gaze onto the towering mountain elite who were crowding the space. "Chyna, Batista, Randy out of my way! Stand against the back wall and do not move unless I tell you to! Scott, get your ass over by Kevin's bed, you're taking up too much room!"
The sheer force of Rey's authority left the dangerous warriors entirely stunned. Randy Orton opened his mouth to snap a retort, but a single, lethal glare from Chyna made him shut it as she, Batista, and the younger Alpha obediently retreated to the corner of the room. Scott Hall didn't say a word, quickly squeezing his tall frame into the narrow space right beside Kevin Nash’s elevated cot, his dark eyes fixed tightly on the unfolding madness.
"Eddie! Sean! With me, right now!" Rey yelled, snapping his fingers as he tore away the ruined leather guards from Hunter's bleeding arm. "Eddie, I need a fresh basin of clean, boiling water and the sharp iron shears! Sean, grab the heavy linen bandages, the alcohol spirits, and heat the tips of three sewing needles over the hearth until they are white-hot! Then start crushing the dried comfrey and poppy roots into a fine paste for the numbing poultice! Move, move, move!"
The medical wing became a blur of frantic, coordinated motion. Eddie and Sean tore across the room, executing Rey's commands with flawless speed. But in the center of the storm, Shawn refused to stay anchored to his cot. Ignoring the agonizing, hot flare of pain in his bleeding calf, the prince dragged himself onto the edge of Hunter's stone table, his hands frantically gripping the King's massive, limp shoulders.
"You absolute idiot, wake up!" Shawn screamed, his voice breaking as a wave of pure, terrified rose scent flooded the room. He shook Hunter’s massive frame, tears finally spilling over his bruised cheeks as he looked at the gaping, bloody wound on the Alpha's arm. "You had to be so incredibly stubborn, didn't you?! You couldn't just lie down, you couldn't just let me take care of you on the trail! Open your green eyes, Hunter! Wake up!"
Hunter remained completely still, his pale face framed by his damp blonde beard, his heavy chest rising and falling in shallow, agonizing rhythm.
"Shawn, you need to let him go! I can't stitch his arm if you're pinning him down!" Rey shouted, frantically trying to clear the space as he grabbed his medical thread. "Eddie! Sean! Get the prince back onto his bed!"
Eddie Guerrero rushed forward, his muscular arms wrapping around Shawn’s torso from behind, while Sean gently but firmly grabbed the prince's wrists. Together, they had to physically drag a thrashing, fiercely fighting Shawn away from the unconscious King.
"Let me go! He's bleeding out because of me, let me go!" Shawn fought them, his nails digging into Eddie's arms until his strength finally wavered, his injured leg giving out entirely. Eddie carefully lifted him and placed him onto the adjacent cot, where Sean immediately pinned his shoulders down, his sweet dandelion scent flaring with a desperate, crying plea to keep his prince calm.
"Please, Shawn, please stay still," Sean whispered, his eyes glassy as he held him down. "Rey is going to save him. He's the best we have. Just let him work."
From the dark corner of the room, the gathered Alphas watched the entire, raw scene unfold in complete, breathless silence. Batista’s jaw was clenched tight, Randy Orton was staring with a newfound, profound shock at the southern prince, and Chyna’s eyes softened with a heavy, deeply emotional layer of respect.
Beside Kevin's bed, Scott Hall leaned his shoulder against the stone pillar, his usual smirk completely buried under a heavy grimace. He flicked his eyes down toward Kevin Nash. The 7-foot knight was sitting up as much as his bad knee would allow, his large hands gripping the edges of his mattress so hard his knuckles were entirely white. Kevin’s cedar wood scent was thick with a protective, silent agony for his prince, but as he looked at Hunter’s pale face, his gaze held no more animosity, only the grim respect of one warrior watching another who had nearly died to protect what mattered most.
Shawn finally stopped thrashing. The sheer weight of his exhaustion came crashing down like a collapsed wall now that the adrenaline was rapidly draining from his veins. He slumped back onto the mattress, his body trembling, but his deep blue eyes never stopped tracking Hunter’s pale face while Rey expertly worked on their wounds, his medical needle pulling tight stitches through the King's torn flesh.
Shawn’s own vision was blurring, darkness creeping into the edges of his consciousness, but before the exhaustion could drag him under completely, he forced his heavy eyelids open. He looked directly at Sean, his voice a raspy, quiet whisper. "Sean... the men by the lake... they were the same ones. The exact same ones from the mountain pass."
Shawn then dragged his eyes over to the dark corner of the room, locking his gaze onto the legendary female Alpha. "Chyna... some of them... some were still breathing when we left."
Chyna’s expression instantly turned predatory, her sharp Alpha scent flaring with a lethal, icy readiness. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She snapped her head toward the two elite warriors standing beside her. "Batista. Randy. Take a scouting party and ride down to the lake right now. Follow the trail of Hunter's blood to find the clearing. If any of those western bastards are still sucking air, bind their wounds and drag them back here in chains. I want answers."
"On it," Batista growled, his massive frame shifting into motion as he and a grim-faced Randy Orton immediately bolted out of the medical wing, their heavy boots slamming against the stones as they headed for the stables.
With the room slightly cleared, the heavy, suffocating silence returned, broken only by the crackle of the hearth and Hunter's shallow breathing. Shawn’s eyes finally closed, his head dropping sideways as unconsciousness claimed him.
While the prince and the king slept, a grim, hushed war council began around Kevin Nash’s cot. Chyna stepped out of the shadows, joining Scott Hall and a visibly shaken Sean at the foot of the bed. The atmosphere was incredibly tense, their scents a heavy, clashing mix of cedar wood, sea breeze, and iron.
"Alright, mister knight," Chyna began, her deep voice dropping to a low, quiet register as she crossed her arms. "Your prince just confirmed this wasn't a random bandit raid. This is a targeted hunt. Who the hell is trying to start a war on our ridges?"
Kevin Nash let out a long, heavy sigh, his cedar wood scent flaring with a deep, grim seriousness as he looked up at the mountain Alpha. Having held back his suspicions for days to protect Shawn's state of mind, he knew he couldn't afford to keep the secrets anymore. The enemy was inside their perimeter.
"It's not the barbarians, and it's not a common mercenary guild," Kevin revealed, his voice a low rumble. "Those weapons, that coordination... it’s professional western steel. Me and Shawn think our court leaked the route during the first attack. I don't think King Vincent signed the warrant. But the vipers whispering in his ear? That's a different story. I'd bet my blade this has Pat Patterson’s greasy fingerprints all over it, likely working alongside Gerald Brisco. Those two betas probably have been plotting with Lord Eric Bischoff for months. They want Shawn dead or captured to break the treaty, forcing our kingdoms into a war once again."
Scott Hall let out a low whistle, casually spinning his toothpick between his lips, his dark eyes narrowing. "Bischoff... that greedy western lord has been eyeing our southern borders for years. If someone high in your court is feeding him internal royal coordinates, they can bypass our scouts completely."
"Which means the lake ambush won't be the last," Chyna noted grimly, her jaw tightening. "They are testing our defenses. We need to lock down the fortress gates and double the mountain patrols. If Bischoff thinks he can slide his snakes into my home while the King is down, he’s going to find out how we bury traitors."
Hours later, the deep crimson hues of sundown had faded into a quiet, starless mountain night.
Shawn woke up with a sharp, burning gasp as the numbing poultice on his calf began to wear off. He blinked against the dim torchlight, his rose scent turning faint and soft. The room was mostly quiet now; Kevin Nash was asleep on his cot, and the guards had retired to enforce the new perimeter.
Rey Mysterio stepped out from the shadows, carrying a small cup of water. He immediately noticed Shawn trying to swing his good leg off the mattress.
"Absolutely not, Prince Shawn," Rey intervened gently but firmly, pressing a hand against Shawn’s shoulder to keep him anchored. "I just put twelve silk stitches into your calf. If you start walking around this stone floor, the wounds will rip open and you’ll bleed right through my linens. You are on strict bed rest."
Shawn looked at the short doctor, his blue eyes wide with a desperate, silent plea, before shifting his gaze to the large stone table just a few feet away. Hunter was still unconscious, his massive chest heavily wrapped in white bandages, his stitched left arm resting on a fur pillow. His rain scent was calm now, a peaceful, quiet drizzle that filled the small space between their beds.
"Please, Rey," Shawn whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, soft vulnerability. "Just... just let me sit next to him. I can't stay over here. Please."
Rey stared at the prince for a long beat, analyzing the fierce, protective anxiety written all over Shawn’s features. Realizing that keeping the stubborn McMahon away from the King would only cause his pheromones to spike with more stress, the gentle doctor let out a soft sigh and nodded.
"Fine. But you don't step on that leg," Rey commanded. He walked over, grabbed a heavy wooden chair, and pulled it right up against the edge of Hunter's medical table. Eddie Guerrero carefully assisted, lifting Shawn’s slender frame and setting him gently onto the chair, ensuring his bandaged calf remained elevated on a small stool.
Once he was close enough, the lingering ice around Shawn's heart completely dissolved. He leaned forward, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out. He didn't care about royal protocols, he didn't care about his southern pride, and he didn't care about how angry he had been the day before.
Shawn slowly lowered his head, resting his cheek securely against the top of Hunter's massive, uninjured right arm. He closed his eyes, breathing in the deep, comforting aroma of freshly fallen rain that rolled off the Alpha's skin.
"You idiot," Shawn murmured into the dark fur blankets, his hand gently tangling with Hunter's thick fingers. "You better wake up tomorrow. We still have a war to fight, and I am not letting you have the last word."
In the quiet room, the rain and the roses finally stopped fighting, blending into a sweet, fiercely protective bond in the dark.
