jilted by his somber tone, cleopatra tore herself away from the quarterly report she’d been studying. the day had been spent on little else, as had the days prior. for months, cleo woke each morning with one goal in mind – to take back control of her father’s company. the work she’d done had certainly strengthened her position, but cleo was nothing if not thorough. for, once she had it back, she did not intend to lose it AGAIN.
when cleo stood, she did not speak, the surrounding stillness punctuated by the clacking of her heels on the floor. with how comfortable she’d become in his presence, cleo no longer felt the urge to constantly fill the silence. but that comfort came at a cost – cracks had begun to form in her facade, allowing glimpses of her humor and youthful naïveté. once at the bar cart, she poured them both a drink, the smile she wore as unrestrained as the humor in her voice.
“now –” she chided, ever gently. “ – don’t tell me you’ve let those old fools get to you. there are far more important things to concern yourself with than the opinions of the senile.”
it was easy to forget the years between them; after all, he was far closer in age to those ‘ old fools ’ than he was to the girl before him. yet, cleo found herself enamored all the same; never before had she met someone so worthy of her respect. & whatever did differences matter, when measured against shared ambition? with practiced steps, cleo drew herself closer, an arm outstretched to offer him one of the glasses.
