Final place video
Final video portrait
Rationale
For the portrait of a place we as a group decided on the Wellington night market. We thought the market would be an interesting place to document largely due to the level of change in the environment. During the day the market is quiet off Side Street of Cuba, with a handful of small stores, cafes and restaurants. However at night, the market really comes to life with a variety of stalls; from food to clothing. To create a portrait of the Wellington night market we chose to use a narrative, involving a group of young people who spend the evening in the market, we felt that this approach we portray a very believable and relateable film. Using people to engage with the stalls instead of just observing them from a far, adds the element the viewer being able to actually see what happens, and what can be experienced at the night market. The process of filming for our night market video involved getting a group of young people and filming their interactions form multiple viewpoints; We tried to get a mix of shots from the outside looking into stalls, the inside looking out and shots and shots from the angle someone may see if they were to walk through the market. For this film we were influenced by Felipe Cardona' Tricky Two film with its use of rhythm and repetition. Also the Play Melbourne advertisement campaign displaying a group of young adults exploring Melbourne.Â
For our portrait of person, we decided to film Nathan’s younger cousin Nico Poultney. We chose Nico as we thought filming a small documentary about a gifted child would be an engaging experience for the viewer as Nico isn’t the typical gifted child who is completely factual. He has an extremely vivid imagination as well as being a very intelligent child. For filming techniques, we filmed Nico engaging in some activities. For sound we hired a microphone to get better sound quality. We chose to film Nico both at his house and a park he enjoys visiting. We wanted to display various locations, we also felt this may make Nico more comfortable and therefore more open during our interview. For the interview we looked at previous interviews with children such as CBS news' interview with Jake Barnett and Jimmy Kimmel live's interview with Arden Hayes. We also took influence from Levni Yilmaz' Tales of Mere Existence, with his quirky cartoons.
Unfortunately we ran into some technical difficulties when filming Nico with the app Filmic Pro, which resulted in footage being lost, and often not saved. However we did retain our separate audio recording we took we the microphone . Along with this our film for the night market could not be reshot, or additional film added due to the August 16 Earthquake. Which resulted in the market not being open on the Friday it normally would have been.
For post production we used video editing software Sony Vegas Pro 11, and sound editing software Temper and WavePad.

Unforeseen Circumstances
Unfortunately we ran into some technical difficulties with the filming app Filmic Pro, which resulted in footage, being lost, and often not saved. Along with this our film for the night market could not be re-shot due to the August 16 Earthquake, which resulted in the night market not being open on the Friday night as it normal would have been. We ran into the same Filmic Pro problems when filming Nico, and some was lost, however we did retain our separate audio recordings we took. Due to lack of footage we had to improvise and think of other filming techniques to compensate for the lack of footage.
For the audio in our Night Market video, we have been experimenting with freeware sound editing programs such as Temper and WavePad. I have hit a few snags along the way however, as my understanding of such programs is quite limited. Regardless, we will persevere, although an alternate solution may be required.
Preparation for Final Footage
After much deliberation we have decided to ask Niko about his skills, hobbies, interests, and what he wants to do when he's older. After the practice interview we realised that Niko was somewhat uncomfortable in front of the camera and as such will interview him in a more comfortable environment such as his house or his bedroom. If we interview him in a more comfortable environment, we increase the likelihood of capturing footage of him actually engaging in activities he enjoys.
In preparation for our final location filming, we have decided to create a narrative within the environment. We believe this will encapsulate the essence of the environment in a more dynamic, engaging and accessible manner. A group of students galavanting about the Night Market will be more relatable to our target demographic, which consists of a similar group of students.
Music
We have decided not to use a backing track for our interview, since the audio from the interview will be enough. As for the destination, we're going for an upbeat feeling. As such we'll go for something along the lines of 1950s big band music since it's usually quite happy and energetic. We'll go for something similar to the following:

Portrait of a person test: Niko
We met up with a filmed an interview with Niko, we also interviewed his mother Bronwyn about Niko. For the interview we hired some audio equipment to give a better sound quality.

Split Screen
We played around with the split screen technique in the Market, as it emphasis the contrast.
Night Market test video This is our test video of the place we are exploring, the Wellington Night Market. We tried to show the contrast between night and day of the area. We discovered that there is a lot of hustle and bustle, so we captured the motion busy crowds. We ran into difficulties with the filming, our film turned out quite shaky. To fix this we are going to practice filming and walking. We also found most people did not want to be filmed. We are going to try and work around this, by being careful with are filming in crowds.
Storyboards of our films.
We were really inspired by the MINA mobile short films shown to us in class. We particularly enjoyed the film Airport Nocturnal by Daniel Mauro, and the way it displayed the airport as fun and interactive; contradicting the usual boring portrayal. It started by displaying the particular airport during the daytime, when it appears dull and like every airport with planes and the hussle and bustle of passengers. Then as the sun sets, the airport slowly morphs into something more vibrant- more colourful. The film focuses on light, reflections and angles as the artist places the camera in places that make the film appear almost abstract and surreal at times.
We wish to take a similar approach to our destination portrait of the Wellington night market, filming it boring by day and the transition it takes to become an exciting and vibrant atmosphere.

Brain storm of possible questions and shots for our interview and environment film
Chosen Person
For the portrait of person we will be interviewing Nathan's younger cousin Niko, age 10. Who is part of the Wellington Explorers Club, an association for gifted children, and attends University once or twice a term. We think interviewing a gifted child would be interesting given how smart Niko is, none the less he is still a child. During thew interview we hope to gain insight into what he does, what he wants to do, but also his more child-like interests. Along with this we have looked at other interviews with gifted children to see what kind of questions were asked, and how they were asked.Â
Below are interviews some gifted children to be used as artist models. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOUFfeg0Xm0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR36jrx_L44
