This boat represented so many things for our sailing foundation, and touched so many lives through the adventures we were able to take with it. It was the first substantial donation we were able to take on after getting 501c3 status, and it was donated by a man all of the kids fondly referred to as "Sailboat Santa". We've all put ample amounts of literal blood, sweat, and tears getting this foundation off the ground, but none more than my mom.

Manifest Youth Sailing, as it is named, is nowhere near any of those bougie East Coast yacht clubs you might be picturing. We operate on a fleet of entirely donated boats, most being smaller dinghies that are pulled on and off the beach by hand. We have no permanent facilities, which has kept the cost as low as we possible, and my mom, having raised me and my four younger siblings on her own, has a rule of never turning away any child who wants to learn, for any reason. Her heart is entirely dedicated to the keiki, the children, and teaching them lessons in trust and community that will reach far past any of their potential sailing careers. I can't even describe how much it makes my heart soar watching some of those kids go from being too scared to get in the water on day one, to dragging their parents out onto the tiny boat with them to show off their new skills!

In all of this, members of my family have been quietly managing some worsening neurological conditions, and I have been desperately trying to join them out there to continue making this dream come true. Mom fought so hard for this boat, and for the hundreds of kids that have been carried by her protective hull. As I am writing this, they've already begun dismantling parts of her in hopes that most of her will make it back to shore, but it is too soon to say what will end up happening.

We're currently living in Upstate NY, and making preparations to move to the Big Island of Hawaii to be with our mom, who also needs full-time support for developing medical conditions. It's heavy stuff! I've thought many times about putting together another GoFundMe to help with our situation, but I thought this would be a better avenue to ask for support in a way that wouldn't cost people anything.
