Growing up in Kent alongside his mother and stepfather, Dedalus Diggle had quite the happy childhood, despite his biological father’s absence. His father, Royce Harrison, was a wizard who had an extramarital affair with Dedalus’ mother, Nancy Rosewood, a muggle, promising her that though he was not divorced, his wife and him were separated. Yet, when Nancy told him she was carrying his child, Royce walked out on her, turning his back on the woman he claimed to love. It was hard for Nancy, raising a son on her own, but her love for her son gave her the strength she needed to push through. And for a while, it was just the two of them, struggling to get by, relying on the kindness of strangers and Nancy’s job as a bartender at the local pub, but then, when Dedalus was around three years old, Nancy met and fell for Nigel Diggle, a solicitor who frequented the pub where she worked at. From that point on, Nigel became a permanent part of their lives, acting as a father figure for Dedalus, and six months later, Nigel and Nancy were married, Nigel adopting young Dedalus and giving him his last name. A very energetic and adventurous child, Dedalus would often spend his time playing with the neighborhood children and participating in the Kent youth soccer team. A loyal fan, Dedalus was a follower of the Kennington football club and would attend their matches every chance he got alongside Nigel. When Dedalus was seven, he began showing signs of having inherited his father’s magical abilities, having once caused all the lights in his house to flicker on and off due to his excitement over Kennington have coming out champion of the Kent FA, and while his parents were both very surprised and slightly apprehensive, Nigel and Nancy were also extremely supportive and understanding, growing to think of it as a quirk of sorts.

It wasn’t until Dedalus received his Hogwarts acceptance letter that it became quite clear that Dedalus was anything but a normal child. At first, his parents were completely against sending him off to god knows where, but a few days after his acceptance letter arrived, Nancy received a letter from Royce, one in which he admitted to being a wizard and asked Nancy to allow Dedalus to attend Hogwarts, that it would truly be the best thing for him. Despite their own misgivings, Nancy and Nigel both agreed that Dedalus deserved a chance to hone his magical abilities, to be a part of a world so much more fascinating than that in which they lived in. So, with a heavy heart, they watched on in wonder as Dedalus boarded the train to Hogwarts, bidding their little boy farewell. On the Hogwarts Express, Dedalus found himself sharing a compartment with Gregory Abbott, a quiet boy who spent most of the ride muttering to himself about dragons and hippogriffs, two things Dedalus knew nothing about. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, Dedalus couldn’t help but be impressed by the beauty of his surroundings, letting his excitement be known through his enthusiastic shouts as the castle came into view. When it came to being sorted, Dedalus was slightly apprehensive, practically running to take a seat on the stool, nearly toppling Professor McGonagall over in his haste, ready to get it over with. It wasn’t before long that the sorting hat placed him in Hufflepuff and Dedalus rushed off to take a seat at the table of black and yellow, soon followed by Gregory, the two boys sharing a relieved smile at seeing a familiar face. Dedalus’ first year at Hogwarts went off without a hitch, Dedalus feeling quite a home amongst his fellow badgers. Friendly, outgoing and extremely gregarious, it wasn’t difficult for Dedalus to make friends,  his easy-going and endearing awkwardness making him popular among many of his classmates, most noticeably Henry Pocklington, the two of them soon becoming the best of mates. Dedalus’ friendship with Gregory also grew throughout the years, Dedalus considering him one his closest mates. 

With an enthusiasm for life and a knack for making practically any situation appear humorous  Dedalus is considered a ray of sunshine by his friends, never letting anything dampen his spirits. Even in the worst of times, he always has a joke at the ready, able to find a silver lining where others only see darkness. Admittedly, he does tend to be a bit naive, believing that everyone is worthy of a second chance despite their previous actions, and wears his heart on his sleeve, ruled by his heart instead of his head. Unsurprisingly, Dedalus doesn’t seem to care if people take advantage of his naivety and tends to be easily forgiving, unable to hold a grudge. Cheerful and somewhat obnoxious, Dedalus is always found in the midst of the action, either because he unintentionally caused it, or simply because he wants to egg it on. Because of this, he happens to be quite close to the Marauders, considering Sirius Black a mentor of sorts. Due to being a half-blood, Dedalus takes quite a bit of heat from the more known blood supremacists, especially Silas Yaxley who has made it his mission to torment Dedalus every chance he gets. And though it does bother him, it will take more than their constant belittling to make Dedalus stoop to their level. Like Sirius, Dedalus thinks of himself as a bit of a ladies man, although most girls don’t take him seriously as a potential suitor. Yet, despite the fact that he isn’t necessarily ‘boyfriend material’, girls seem to enjoy his company immensely. He’s amusing and genuinely kind, as well as a decent listener, the type of guy you can trust to have your back no matter what. Besides, he is quite handsome, what with that lopsided grin he’s so infamous for and those beautiful brown eyes with a hint of hazel. If only Dedalus wasn’t so blind to the fact that Prudence Clearwater was interested in much more than Dedalus’ friendship. Perhaps if he would stop daydreaming about Amelia Bones, the girl Dedalus has been half in love with since his second year at Hogwarts? All in all, even though Dedalus lacks common sense, he is a good guy, one of the few good ones out there, as Prudence likes to say. Loyal and faithful, Dedalus is a true friend, one anybody would be lucky to have. 

Academically, Dedalus leaves much to be desired, though he does try his best. As McGonagall likes to say, what Dedalus lacks is sense, not intelligence, just common sense. He shows little ambition and has no real direction, preferring to live each day at a time instead of making plans for his future. Even from a very young age, Dedalus has always been a bit slower than the other kids in his neighborhood, though it had nothing to do with him lacking intelligence, it was simply due to the fact that he never seemed to put any effort into his studies. Yet, somehow, Dedalus manages to keep afloat in his courses, relying on luck and his friendship with Micah Bones, Professor Slughorn having insisted that Dedalus seek a potions tutor during his second year at Hogwarts, assigning Micah as his personal tutor. Despite their differences, the two boys managed to strike up a friendship, partially due to the fact that Dedalus could actually make Micah crack a smile every once in awhile and the fact that Dedalus allowed Micah to droll on and on about subjects that Dedalus has no real interest in. Another Ravenclaw that Dedalus considers a close friend is Adelaide Beaufort, Dedalus having asked her for help in transfiguration during their fourth year. Dedalus would have been lying if he said that he had never been romantically interested in Adelaide, she was far too beautiful for him not to have even considered it, but he soon realized that what Adelaide needed was a friend, not another guy following after her like a lovesick puppy. To the surprise of many, including himself, Dedalus was chosen as the male fifth year Prefect, an honor he would have never expected to be bestowed upon him. Dedalus wasn’t exactly the most responsible of people, in fact, his track record would suggest that he was the epitome of a troublemaker, but perhaps that was the reason Dumbledore has chosen him instead of Gregory or someone better suite? Perhaps it was a ploy to help teach Dedalus responsibility? A ploy that would undoubtedly fail. Dedalus doesn’t even know all the rules and the idea of giving anyone detention gives him hives. He’s not exactly the kind of person who thrives on having authority. In fact, he dreads it. But, like any Hufflepuff, Dedalus is determined to try his best to make Dumbledore proud, to be true to his house, to prove everyone wrong by actually taking his job as Prefect seriously.
