Like I get on Melville’s case, but if I am truly honest, the only reason I haven’t written a rambling, poorly organized 300k novel about the Hubris of Man, Fun Whale Facts, and A Whole Lotta Queer Shit while in a manic state is that I had other, weirder ideas first but lemme go put “next great American novel” down on the to-write list.
