But a million memories swept through his head. Jason being utterly starstruck by Kory the first time he had met her, the million and one questions Jason had to ask Kory, taking photos of the two of them as Kory gave Jay a piggyback ride… the way that Jason, at one point, had rather memorably said, man, you guys are so perfect together. If you ever break up, that’ll be it, I’ll just stop believing in true love.

“Yeah, no, we’re going good,” Dick said, lying through his teeth. “Long distance, y’know?”

The news spread like wildfire across the kingdom: the Prince had been stolen away from his father’s castle in the night.  People had reported seeing a huge serpent fleeing the tower, wings flapping rhythmically against the sky.

Naturally, Sir Donna Troy was the person called upon to handle the situation.  She was Prince Richard’s childhood friend and confidante, not to mention one of the best swordswomen in the country.  So, when she was informed of the dragon and the kidnapping and the gargoyles knocked off the towers, she accepted the challenge immediately.

Wayne Manor has a surprising amount of obstacles for the home of a normal, albeit offensively wealthy, family.  Luckily, Dick has sneaked out plenty of times before, so he’s able to navigate the creaky floorboards, the sleeping Titus, and the laser trap with little difficulty and get to the window, where he utilizes his acrobatic abilities to shimmy awkwardly down the wall with the help of a climbing rope from the school gym.

“You wouldn’t believe it if I told you,” Dick says before Developmental Psychology.  “It’s bizarre.  It’s completely unheard of.  You’ll say I’m crazy.”

“I won’t say you’re crazy until you tell me what it is,” Donna says.  He gets like this sometimes.  Even though Dick is usually a fairly down-to-earth guy, when he’s impassioned he can get very strange.

“I’m in love,” Dick says.

“I believe you,” Donna says, slightly disappointed.  “Who is it?”  She looks around the room.  The only other person there is wearing headphones and staring out the window like the protagonist of a teen drama.  “Is it Roy again?” she says in a hushed voice.

Summary: Robin and Starfire are young, in love, and the greatest jewel thieves that New York has ever seen. For @dickkory-week 2021, day 5: Crime AU.

Kory tries not to touch the walls as she and Dick creep down the alley. For such a fancy apartment building, the alleyway running behind it is very grimy and very pungent. Kory supposes rich people make garbage just like anyone else.

“Ready?” She holds out her arms wide, inviting Dick to leap into them.

Dick grins and adjusts his mask. “When am I ever not ready?”

Instead of jumping into Kory’s arms, he leaps three feet into the air and grabs hold of the fire escape. Two swings for momentum, and he flips up onto the platform and is scampers up the ladder.

Kory laughs and pushes off her toes and into the air. She beats Dick to the window, but not by much.

It would be easy for Kory to shatter the window with a starbolt, but Dick likes to do things quietly, so as not to attract attention. You’re already a six-foot-five golden goddess, he said once. Let’s not add loud noises to the mix.

Dick craves Kori like a war-torn body craves peace.

The moment Dick puts on the cowl, Gotham rose up and smothered him in nightmares of her own making. He doesn’t need to be told that he is being pulled in every direction and he barely has time to think about his ex being off-planet. But he craves her, subconsciously.

It doesn’t mean he doesn’t think about her, though. He thinks about her in moments, in flashes: when he wakes up midday, after a rough night of patrolling with Damian, and his arms reach out and he expects her to be there; when he buys her favorite kind of drink even though he doesn’t even like it all that much and it stays in the fridge until Alfred decides to throw it away; when he’s down in the Cave with nothing debilitating weighing on his shoulders and his body aches to be near her.

Dick does think about her. Maybe not in the way she deserves, but in the way that he can.
