With a sigh, Eddie puts the last plate on the drying rack and scans the kitchen for any forgotten dishes. He curses under his breath as he notices a pan he left on the stove. Deciding that it could use some soaking anyway, he just puts it in the sink and fills it with water. He’ll deal with it later. Or he’ll forget about it until the next time he needs it, which might or might not have happened before. His thoughts about frying pans and responsibilities are disrupted by Buck who strolls into the kitchen.
“Chris is in bed and waiting for his goodnight kisses,” Buck says with a small smile. “You might want to hurry though. We’ve been through capturing the flag and Percy getting claimed as the son of Poseidon so he’s pretty exhausted from all the excitement.”
Eddie chuckles at that. At first, he was a bit hurt that he gets side-lined whenever Buck is around for the bedtime story. He got over it quickly, figuring that he and Christopher have each other all the time so a little diversity didn’t hurt anyone. Plus, the ridiculous voices Buck does always make Chris giggle like crazy. Eddie knows that because sometimes when he tidies up the living room or just chills on the couch when Christopher and Buck disappear in the kid’s bedroom, he catches himself lowering the volume of the TV to eavesdrop on whatever book they are reading at the time. Once or twice, he might doze off on the couch, listening to Buck’s soft voice flowing through the hall. If Buck knew, he didn’t call Eddie out on it.
“Heading out already?” Eddie asks, pointing with his chin at the jacket Buck’s holding.
“It’s pretty late and we work tomorrow,” Buck shrugs. “And as much as I don’t mind your couch, I feel like I haven’t slept in my own bed for a week.”
Eddie nods, even though he knows it’s an exaggeration. “Will you lock the door behind you?” he asks, already heading down the hall to Christopher’s bedroom.
“Sure, but Eddie—,” Buck starts.
“Yeah?” when he sees the look on Buck’s face he turns around and adds, "Everything okay?”
A small nod and a laugh are what he gets in response, but he’s known Buck long enough to notice it sounds a bit off. Before he can say anything else, Buck continues, “I was just wondering. Do you have any plans on Friday? We have a day off and I thought— Maybe you’d like to go to dinner? With me?”
“Sure,” Eddie shrugs. This doesn’t explain the nervousness he can sense from Buck so he waits to see if there’s more to come.
But Buck only lights up, as if expecting Eddie was going to say no.
“Yeah?” Buck asks, grinning.
“Of course, Buck,” Eddie smiles, still a bit confused.
