I was in a long term relationship, 10 years to be exact. We grew up together, built our dreams, goals and an entire future together. When we broke up, it shattered me in a way that I can’t begin to explain. For many nights I couldn’t breathe. I tried therapy. Drowned myself in religions. Wrote about darkness, and emptiness to aliviate how I was feeling. I kept track of journals where I could unleash my thoughts, even the dark ones. I tried seeing other people. Cried myself to sleep many times. Slowly, I began to create a version of myself he didn’t know. I moved on, traveled and filled my life with healthy relationships. But that question always ran in the back of my mind... how could he have moved on so fast, leaving 10 years of “unconditional love” behind? Why did I have to struggle and be the one to suffer, while he strolled around the city with his new gal, not giving two fucks about me? For many nights, these thoughts controlled my mind.
Until one day...
He randomly called me to tell me he cheated on her. Many thoughts raced through my mind. The major one was gratefulness. Grateful I embraced the fall, and that it hurt like hell— it was that fall that helped me rise higher. It was that lesson that taught me compassion, patience and love, not so much for others, but for myself. It taught me self respect, and self confidence. How to stand with my own two feet without having anyone to hold me. Learned to stop blaming myself for the shitty decisions other people make, and learning to smile through the bullshit. And although there were times I wanted to die to escape my pain, nothing and I mean nothing compares to this feeling.
Being healthy, happy and at peace with myself while he deals with his own mistakes. I don’t wish bad upon him, but for once I feel at the top. So many nights I felt unworthy, and here I am worth it all.
I still miss you but it’s different this time. It’s different because I’m not waiting for you to come back anymore, I’m not waiting for things to go back to how they were. I can’t reach out for you anymore because you’d pull away when the old you would’ve pulled me closer and that still breaks my heart. I can’t bring myself to reach out to you because I can’t take the hurt I feel when you take yet another step back. I’m stronger now and I can keep my distance. But I do still miss you even though I know things can’t go back. I still miss you but it’s different, because this time, I only miss the memories of you and not the person standing right in front of me.
I still miss you, but one day I won’t.
“I hope the universe sends you little signs to remind you of me. It doesn’t have to be much. It doesn’t have to be life changing. Just one small thing from time to time to keep the memories alive. To have my favourite song start on the radio to remind you of how I danced at 2AM in the kitchen that one night is enough. To find an empty cup of tea in the sink even though you could have sworn you haven’t drunk any since I left. To walk past a stranger in the streets and smell my perfume. It‘s the little things that are the worst, after all. The little things that, if combined, have the biggest impact. The things that are so small you barely notice them, the kind that slips in through the cracks and sticks with you. I don’t want you to be in pain. I don’t want you to wish I came back. I just hope you think of me with a smile. I hope you don’t regret a single minute spent with me. It’s all I can ask for.”
— signs / n.j.
I remember looking at him once and remember thinking how fortunate i was to have him, thinking i could get used to his smile, and the way his eyes looked at me. imagining an entire life with him by my side. suddenly every goal, and every part of my life was built around him as he suddenly became part of it. the father of my children, the husband that would hold my hand the day our youngest would graduate from college, and the one that would wake me up with a good morning kiss every day of my life. that was the life we planned for us.
but the minute he left, he didn't just leave me feeling lonely in that moment. he left me empty for a lifetime.
i wanted it to be him. he promised it'd be him, and now im left with nothing. just empty dreams, and memories of what could've been us.

him
when you see a picture of him, you may think he has life all figured out. when you speak to him, you may assume he carries this confidence for himself like no one else you may know. when you hear him laugh, you probably imagine how imazingly genuine this guy is-- unlike the others. what you don't know is that he does not have life figured out. he doubts himself each time he stands before a crowd, and battles with his thoughts of how he thinks he should be in front of others. and as for originality, he tends to take credit for everything good in his life and take for granted every good person in his life. She knew this all about him. His fears, his doubts, his thoughts, his insecurities and dreams. She knew exactly who he was and who he wasn't. She knew how many kids he wanted and at what age. She knew how many friends he truly could count on and the things that made him scared. She knew this all of him. And regardless, she loved him.
self destruction
You are my weakness, and when I say that I mean it in the most vulnerable way. You could break me one hundred times, scream at me that you don't love me a hundred and one times, but I'll be back forgiving you a thousand more. It's as if I have removed any fault from you, have excused your toxic behavior and have accepted you for who you are. Even when I cry myself to sleep, wondering if I am good enough -- I'll still reply to you with a smile and my heart beating out of my chest the second you decide to text me back. With you I am self destructable. While I know how much pain you bring into my life, fully aware of it I continue to let you be both my happiness and my tears. My storm and my rainbow. My broken heart and my strength. And although you have taught me the greatest lessons this life has to offer, I believe that I have destroyed myself enough to understand that I am the only one that can fix myself at this point. When you have broken me one thousand times, its about time I start forgiving myself for my self destruction, and let you deal with yours.
“Please stop destroying what is left of your heart by constantly thinking about things that have broken you.”

It’s ok to be silent. It’s ok to be loud. It’s ok to be reserved, as also it’s ok to be open. It’s ok, don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Not everyone loves with the same passion, intensity or fire as you. Accept that and move on
“Is it okay to love someone that doesn’t love you in return?”
I once read a Quora post with the following question, the answer given by a user SHOOK me and spoke right into my soul
“You’ll have to feel absolutely nothing but overwhelming happiness when you see her kiss another. Or smile to another. Or smile BECAUSE of another. You'll have to be happy that she thinks of someone else right before she falls asleep.
You'll have to stay away. You should never initiate contact with this person (just gonna say, her), and never, should you make her think of you.
You’ll have to be completely fine, knowing that she will NEVER, EVER, want to hold your hand, or look into your eyes, or tell you about her day.
You’ll have to be single, forever. Because if you love someone so much, it wouldn't be fair to be with someone else. If you do, you have to be honest- “I am in love with someone else. Have been for a long time. She will never love me, but I will never stop loving her. While you are amazing, your body, will simply be used to fulfill fantasies I've had about this woman that will never love me. Your mind, will only be picked apart, cos, she would never eat like that; or she would never say something like that.”
You must be okay with the nights you'll spend crying or thinking how much of a loser you are, to be giving all your attention, to someone who doesn't give a fuck about you. You’ll have to be okay with standing in front of the mirror and scrutinizing yourself from head to toe, wondering what else you could have done, to be a better version of yourself. Why doesn't she love me? Why doesn't she see me? Why am I still loving her?
And lastly, while you say that “I'll always be available for her, no matter what. If she texts me, I'm there. If she calls me, I'm there for sure.”, you have to remember, that she probably never ever will think of you.
And if you're okay with that, it's completely okay to love someone who will never love you back.”
Finally, she was face to face with the boy that once broke her heart so many years ago. The one that filled her with actionless promises.
He said with a sigh, "You have no idea how much I missed you, everyday it was torture not having you around. I missed your laugh, your crazy hair every morning, and the way you squinch your nose when you want to say something, but you're too afraid to say a word. I really missed you."
She shook her head in dissapointment and said, "No, you didn't. You did not miss me, as a matter of fact you don't even know what missing someone feels like, or what it is. Missing someone is feeling an emptiness everytime something good or bad happens in your life, and you think of them instantly wishing they were around to experience life-- its good and bad moments. Missing someone is not being able to forget their memories no matter how much you try, and hating yourself for it. You have no idea what missing someone feels like, because if you truly did, we would not be here after so many years. And just like before, your actionless words were able to speak that for themselves."
I can not love a person that loves with limits, if my heart loves him unconditionally. I can no longer love a person that I value more, than what I value myself sometimes. I refuse to love someone that treats me as a choice, the same way I treat myself as a choice- while placing him first. I give up loving someone that doesn't love me the way I should be loving myself. I can't continue to place him before me, when he alread placed me last on the list, after everyone else. I will no longer shed tears for the person that's to blame for my sleepless nights, and tears. I will forget about the person that forgot about me, while I am tortured with the memories he left behind. I won't place myself in a situation that leaves me heartless and in pain, when I deserve this entire world and more. I can no longer love a person, that no longer loves me. --The shit I continously have to repeat to myself. Maybe one day my words will turn into actions, my actions into a habit, and my habits into my life-- a life without him.

I should've paid attention to the amount of attention you were willing to give me from the beginning. -Could've save me from a heartbreak and tears
It was time
"So you finally found the courage to leave, huh? I actually never thought I'd see the day my bestfriend would finally let go. What happened, what made you finally do it?" Staring into the emptiness of the day, she had been avoiding this question, many had asked- her mom, her cousins, even her grandmother noted the change in her, as also the empty confident smile she shared. "Honestly, it was time. I can't explain it, it was no longer love, it was no longer friendship. It was just a routine- a habit I had grown accustomed to. I felt it was time when he compared our kisses, as also the topic and feeling our conversations carried when we started falling in love. He no longer tried to get to me, he grew tired of persuing me- because he knew I would never leave his side. He stopped making me laugh crazily, as also felt cold and empty when I reached out for his hand. It was different, I started missing him even when he was standing next to me. I started missing the person I had first fallen in love with, I started contemplating and becoming upset when he did not have a sassy snarky comment in return of mine, instead he was snappy and serious all the time. He was no longer the person I loved all these years, and no matter how much it hurt to see him go. It was time. Because I honestly don't know what is worse that seeing the man you loved standing in front of you, but miss him at the same time."
