One time I was working the register at a dollar store thats located in a relatively low income neighborhood, so the prices are pretty reasonable. A couple walks up to me and asks me to check the price of a boxed fan. I say âokay, no problem.â It comes up to be $15. They then start to go on and say there should be an open/damaged box discount and if that thereâs something I would do for them. At this point theyâre already giving me attitude, so when I start explaining that there isnât a discount unless the actual product is damaged, they walk away in the middle of my sentence. Iâm like âwow rude!â and proceed to put the fan back on the shelf.
About five minutes later my manager walks back inside from taking the garbage out and asks me if there was a problem with the customers. I say no, there wasnât a problem because the couple didnât actually cause a scene. He says, âThis couple came out and said to me âare you the manager?â you need to check your cashier in there. sheâs rude and racists. She was nice to the white lady before us.
I kind of just stare at him with an expression like 'really?â and then tell him that they were upset because they didnât get a discount on an already dirt cheap product. He believed me and kind of just laughed it off. But it irritates me that just because I donât roll out the red carpet for a customer and give them everything they want I suddenly donât know how to do my job or Iâm the one being rude and unreasonable. I always go out of my way to be pleasant to customers so it always bugs me when they displace their anger on me.
