People actually HATE this game? I thought it was a joke!
Firstly Iād like to address not only the shitty ācriticismā of this game but to also address the games flaws and giving the title of ābest game Iāve ever playedā
Major decision points can feel superficial when two completely different choices lead back to the exact same plot point five minutes later.
Counterpoint: Telltale games prioritize emotional tailoring over branching destinations. Choosing between saving Petra or Gabriel, or opting to build different structures, fundamentally alters team relationships, dialogue tone, and how Jesse earns respect as a leader. The journey feels personal even if the destination is shared.
So saying that the āplayers choices donāt matterā is blatantly stupid because they still do throughout the games at some times
Early Season 1 episodes relied heavily on predictable hero clichƩs, slapstick gags, and rigid archetype characters.
Counterpoint: It captured the charm of a classic Saturday-morning adventure. As the series progressed into the Adventure Pass (Episodes 6ā8) and Season 2, the writing leaned into clever genre parodies from a classic murder mystery (A Portal to Mystery) to a rogue AI dystopian world (An Access Denied). These episodes brought legitimate tension, existential themes, and genuine emotional resonance, such as Reuben's sacrifice and the tragic arc of Romeo the Admin.
Just because mcsm was tailored to younger audiences doesnāt make the game automatically BAD. I was in middle school and still playing season 2 because it was that good (I didnāt have season one however but I still enjoyed my favorite YouTubers play it). *ahem* dantdm
Crafting sequences were oversimplified quick-time prompts rather than genuine problem-solving
Counterpoint: The game was never meant to replicate Minecraftās mechanics, but rather to expand its mythology. It contextualized abstract in-game conceptsāredstone engineering, command blocks, the Nether, and forgotten civilizationsāinto a cohesive narrative universe that gave fans a fresh way to engage with the world they spent years building in.
Mcsm was separate from the Minecraft universe, it had its aspects but itās supposed to be a novel you play through, thatās the whole point of the game.
Now here are some reasons why the game resonated with me
Memorable and lovable characters
Some good villains (especially the either storm)
I actually have a pirated version on my PC so you canāt tell me āhave you actually played the game?ā Yeah I have.
Now, why exactly have I labeled it the ābest game Iāve ever played?ā
Itās not nostalgia, itās because I genuinely enjoyed the game than the other games I played at the time when I was in my early teens. Plus itās also because when dantdm played it, I REALLY wanted to play it. I did manage to when my sibling had it on their ps4 but it had only two episodes on it. Years later I had to pirate the game (best thing Iāve ever done) and play it on there. It was exactly how I pictured it.
Watching a YouTuber play this changed my life because I would have never found out about mcsm if it wasnāt for dantdm at all. He popularized it if Iām being honest
Also I heard technoblade played it (RIP) and heard he gave it tons of bad criticism and put the game in a bad light, BUT it was only for comedy, criticism ā comedic relief. I did see some clips of him playing it and they were genuinely funny, even if he ācriticizedā the game and I liked it, he was just being funny about it
Anyway I had to get this off my chest, taking the game seriously shouldnāt be the case, just play it for yourself and have FUN, In which nobody does nowadays but still, just have fun playing the game, the telltale devs put their hard work into the game (as well as others) and clearly had fun doing so. Not all games should be taken seriously, as long as youāre having fun, thatās what matters
TLDR: Mcsm isnāt that bad and people who take it seriously and criticize it are overreacting, especially the Redditors!!
P.S take criticism from ACTUAL critics instead of watching YouTubers who constantly bash the game for likes and views, the game wasnāt even that bad itās just that techno and Kwite fueled the fire and changed everyoneās opinions on it, (no hate at all Iām just pointing some stuff out here).
Thank you for coming to my ted talk
