   some would say yoon sori has a habit of finding her way into trouble; sori, on the other hand, would correct them and say she has a way of finding adventure. life is boring if you just stick to the path you’re assigned to and never color outside the lines so if she has a choice, of course she’ll choose otherwise. never mind that the choice isn’t really encouraged–or allowed, technically–but sori’s been raised to believe she can have anything she wants so how is this going to be any different?

   that’s why even though she probably shouldn’t, she still finds herself waltzing into the outlands like she’s a regular - although she might as well be with how often she hangs out at the garage despite it not being something her family owns. her parents had told her to not talk to or hang around with quote-unsavory people-unquote but in her very important opinion, yoonjae isn’t (unsavory, that is). he’s never been anything but nice and welcoming to her, despite her being younger and probably a nuisance since she shows up so much and doesn’t even do anything when she does, except asking him random questions while he’s working or bugging him to let her ‘test’ a car or something he’s repairing.

   does that mean she’ll stop though? of course not!

   so she sticks to her routine of appearing seemingly out of nowhere (but at a time she hopes is not busy for him because she doesn’t want to actually cause him trouble or bother him too much), letting herself into the shop and taking her usual spot of sitting on a work bench next to yoonjae. sori assumes he’s probably noticed her by now but if he hasn’t then she makes her presence known by speaking.

   “hey, do you know how to ride a motorcycle?” she asks first, just to get the conversation rolling before getting to her real question. “i want to learn but i don’t have a license so…” she adds on slowly but doesn’t say anymore, hoping he’ll understand where she’s going.

there a sense of peace knowing that yoonjae is alone. there’s no lie that there’s still a bit of bitterness, but it’s peaceful…. and really what more can he ask for? it’s already been a good solid two years after yoonjae’s cut himself off from his family and gotten a fresh start. having the outlands as a space for him to just be someone normal was more than he could dream since the day people began treating him differently because of his fate.

through his years building up the business and status of the garage, yoonjae has seen plenty of different people come and go from his employees to his customers. every now and then, there’s usually a special case that seems to have a different impact on yoonjae’s life. no matter how small or big, he always remembers them. today yoon sori reminds yoonjae that she is one of those exceptions when she parades through the front doors as yoonjae is buried under a car as he works on replacing a spare tire.

it’s easy to tell that it’s the younger girl who’s made it a norm to visit whenever she feels considering that she heads straight to the bench on the side. most customers will stalk by the front desk and wait before ringing the bell if yoonjae doesn’t greet them. as for employees, they’ll easily shout their intentions as they walk in and out and it’s not hard to tell from the sturdy boots that are required to be worn during work hours.

despite sori being younger, yoonjae’s found that he tends to enjoy her company whenever she does come around. with whatever rumors that still float around about him, it seems she’s one of the few people who don’t really seem to care or mind and choose what they get in person versus what they hear around. so although she never brings any business, she brings herself openly and it’s more than yoonjae could appreciate.

yoonjae almost doesn’t catch onto her question as he’s rolling out from under the car as soon as he hears her addressing him.

“yeah, i do. i had one back a few years ago, but i ended up selling it for some extra cash.” yoonjae tilts his head to side as memories from that time seep through the gates. when her next statement follows though, yoonjae can’t help the amusement on his face as he wipes his hands on an oil rag.

the fall air is a bit crisp with the weather beginning to drop with each passing day as it gets closer and closer to the end of the year. it's not to say that yoonjae doesn't like it. he actually finds himself enjoying the fall season a bit. days aren't too hot and nights aren't too cold, it's a sort of perfect blend between all the seasons. some tend to find all the layering and shedding during that season a bit annoying but it's something that has never bothered yoonjae too much.

the day is still young and yoonjae has enough time to spend catching up on his errands after closing up the shop early. there's just enough work to keep busy at the garage but not so much as to keep yoonjae completely booked. so, he decides to take a day to himself because before anyone knows it, soon enough it'll be winter and then the shop will really be busy.

he's just come from down the rabbit hole with a few new books to keep him entertained through the week. each book a completely different genre from mystery, to dystopian societies to historical safely tucked away into the dark bag that yoonjae has slung on his back. it helps keep his hands open for the shopping he's to do at the farmer's market.

yoonjae sighs before placing the piece of paper down onto his desk, stacking it with the rest of documents he still needed to go through for the workload that week. ever since he had opened his own garage things seemed to finally take a better turn. maybe not always the brightest but good enough for him to be able to remain optimistic to an extent. 

if there’s anything that yoonjae is grateful for its that he found an escape. a second chance. during his last few years of high school and into university, he didn’t make the best choices. the people that he got involved with weren’t the best either but somehow the gang he had been a part of had actually taught him a good deal about cars. it almost seemed random - and considering yoonjae’s familial background, it’s unexpected that he would have chosen to take up a measly career fixing automobiles. yet, it’s also that thought of how different and unrelated it is to his family that is why yoonjae chose it as his new start.

his eyes glaze over to the closed drawer on his left. he thinks to himself that he shouldn’t but he does anyway. so yoonjae slides the drawer open and is greeted with the framed picture of him with his family before everything changed. an innocent family picture with everyone happy and unsuspecting of the destiny that was meant for yoonjae.

it’s mystery why yoonjae still keeps the photo considering how long it’s been since he’s cut himself from his family, leaving no bridges or doors for communication to him. yoonjae knows he may come across them one day whether it be somewhere in the streets or even possibly his shop but he simply hopes that that day will never come. he lives and pretends as if they don’t exist despite the picture in his hand proving otherwise, that they are very much alive.
