Crit season is happening....
Take a look at TMB p/b Equator’s new website! I have assumed a new role on the team: Blog Coordinator or Blog Media Manager or Director of Social Media - Blog Devision or something. In doing so I have been editing and posting my teammates’ thoughts and reports. It would make me proud if you checked in every now and again for some roadie news. Visit here!
Old Caz Report--Hopper #1
The morning started with an early meet up at the Mike Bikes DC. There were loaded up the team sprinter van and drove up to Occidental. This was my first time traveling in a team vehicle, and it was amazing. We arrived with plenty of time to register, put on number plates, and each do our own little warm up before staging madness began. During my warm up I saw Peter Stetina on his mtb bike with cx tires, and Levi with his Specialized Crux. Kabush was riding is road bike, which later played into his finish... (He said it was karma that a mountain biker on a road bike couldnt hang onto the roadies on mountain bikes). We were all staged close together (maybe 7-10 rows back). When the whistle blew everyone was amped and trying to work their way up the tiny, windy, one lane road pointing up. I latched onto the back of Matt's wheel and followed him as he weaved in and out of the crowd effortlessly. By the time we reached the top of the first climb, we were sitting around top 20, but then someone pushed Matt off the road in a hair pin 180 turn and that was the last I saw of him. As we hit the first dirt decent, my descending skills were lacking at high speed and a good group of people passed me. Towards the bottom of the five mile decent Hobbs came by me and I jumped on his wheel for the ride onto the frozen and cold pavement section out to hwy 1 and River Rd. We had a group of 10 or so and we were quickly going into the red zone trying to work our way back up the the chase group, which we could see up ahead. Half way down River Rd I look back and Hobbs is gone... It wasn't until later that I heard about the bad crash. The scary part was that it could of easily been me in that pile up too. Our group finally caught the chase group about a mile before the turn off onto Duncan. This gave time to eat, drink, and relax before the turn up again. Once we made the turn up I was able to stay towards the front of that big group. I road with Mig for the next 5-10 miles and talked about how great it is to be apart of this series year after year. Then Mig dropped me big time!! Even thinking about Hobbs pre route run down, I still managed to miss the Cherry Rd turn, but quickly figured it out and was back on course. Our group was now about 7-10 guys and most were on mtb bikes. As we hit the bottom of the Old Caz climb I was able to get towards the front and tried my hardest chasing Chas (MashSF) up to the top. The Old Caz decent went well and I was able to hang with the mtb bike guys in our group. Climbing out of Old Caz I was getting nervous about water. I was down to less than half a bottle and I thought I missed the Osmo Station. As we descended into the town of Old Caz, the Osmo station was there and I was handed a bottle. I guess that meant I was sitting in the top 30?!? Rolling Austin Creek Rd was mellow. It was me and one other guy on a cx bike (Hippy Matt) and another five guys riding fat tires. As we hit River Rd again I let them all know we need to actually start getting into a pace line and work together. We worked great as a team and rolled to the bottom of Willow Creek dirt climb together. At that point we said its every man for himself... I still had a good amount of gas in the tank and passed 5-7 guys on the way up to the finish. I finished 23th and had an amazing time. So many ppl commented on our kits and gave me congrats about being on the team. It felt really good to be a part of Mike Bikes out there. Romin was at the finish and came by to introduce himself. He had an amazing ride and finished 10th. All of the Mikes Bike team finished well towards the top. Oli had an amazing finish and I hate to think about how Hobbs would of done if he wasn't involved in that crash. Matt, thanks for dragging me to the top of the first climb. In typical fashion, we all hung out for 15 mins or more giving high fives and hugs. When we started our ride back it was Kabush, Levi, Bartels, Yuri, and I. It was great listening to their race reports and stories. I already cant wait for the next event!! JB

2013 Cross Season Recap
2013 CX season is officially finished. DFL had a break out season with record number of racers each week at all of our local cx races. Our M45A and M35A riders scored numerous top ten finishes during the year. Our star, Rachel Lloyd, even got the "call up" from the big leagues (Cal-Giant) to race the second half of the season with the top women elite racers. Rachel podiumed her first two UCI races and went on to a 6th place finish at Nationals in Boulder, Co. Here is a good article from CX Magazine http://www.cxmagazine.com/talking-elite-sixth-place-jonathan-page-rachel-lloyd Until next year!! J

Surf City #3
Four of us rolled down to Bonny Doon for the third installment of the legendary Surf City cyclocross series. We got there with plenty of time to warm up and check out the course. Impressions.... dusty but very fun. Imagine this course with some rain!!
It was Ducky, Patrick, and Brad in the M45A, and I raced the M35A. They all finished strong with 8,9 and 11th place (P,D,B). I made it into a group of three with Aaron and Basil half way into the race and we took turns leading throughout the race. With one to go I bobbled and could never catch back on... I dangled 10-20 ft behind and tried my hardest to get there for the final drag and sprint but never made it. Basil took Aaron in the sprint and I rolled in 4 sec behind them for 9th place.
We were all covered in dust/dirt and smiles after the race. It was great to hear everyones stories about how the race unfolded...

BASP #3 Sierra Point
Last Saturday night was the third race of the BASP series. This is the most fan friendly and fun race we have all season. To top it off, we get to race under the lights.
We had a smaller crew than normal out there throwing down in the M35A and M45A. In the M35A it was Sam and I and in the M45A it was Brad and Dave.
Brad had another awesome race with an 11th place finish and Dave was just behind him at 13th.
In the M35A I managed to get in a chase group that was battling for 9th-12th place. On the last lap I jumped to the front to push the pace and hopefully spread out our little group, but with half a lap to go I ended up bobbling a section and lost two spots. I could never get back in front and I finished in 11th place. Sam wasnt far behind and rode really strong.

Cross Crusade Continued...
Ducky T riding one of the toughest run ups of day 2 at Cross Crusade-Bend Or.
Mark Mastoras taking his last minute gel moments before his race came to a quick end. 15 seconds in and his front wheel literally blew apart. Luckily he was not hurt badly and was able to drink beers and heckle us for the remaining race.
Rachel Lloyd riding off the front for another top podium spot.
DFL Travels to Bend for Cross Crusade
This past weekend a half dozen dfl'ers packed up the cars and vans and made the trek to Bend Or for two days of racing with the Cross Crusade. Most of us had no idea what to expect, since we rarely race in the NW. One of the last times a dfl racer stepped foot in the NW to race, it was for CX Nationals and DFL Brad showed up in a dress for the Elite Pro race and elbows were thrown at him because of it.
On Saturday it was hot and dusty with temps in the 70's. The two LLoyd sisters (yes they are identical twins) won both of their races. Rachel is still undefeated this year and getting faster and faster each race. Rachel pulled off her first win of her rookie season in the Cat B field. Next time they will be racing against each other.
In the M35A race, it was Rick Hunter, Mark Mastoras, Ducky, Sam, and I all lined up towards the back of an 80+ field. It was so fun racing and duking it out with all of them.
This time it was halloween weekend and wearing a dress was practically mandatory. Here I am leading Sam up one of the four run ups. One Dallas cheerleader chasing another...

Sam Lueck was the top dfl'er on Sunday in the M35A field. He worked his way farther towards the front each lap and came by me flying with half a lap to go. There was no catching him after that!!
Rick Hunter raced strong both days. Sunday he got an early flat, but that didnt stop his charging.... He got a quick change and was right back in the mix.
Ducky T bases his racing on course air quality. The first day was super dusty and the wood bbq's were playing a big part in being able to breathe while trying to race for a full 1 hr. Day two was the complete opposite, with temps in the 40's-50's and rain a few hours before start time. Ducky was flying a finished just behind Sam L.
Weekend Race Report
I raced Santa Rosa on Saturday and Candlestick on Sunday. After two days of watching the tail-ends of DFL teammates blow by me on course, I believe I'm uniquely qualified to say that the team acquitted themselves as true, hard men (and Women!) of the cross bike this weekend. In Santa Rosa Patty Mayall showed me what it truly means to carve a turn on a cross course. At candlestick I saw Brad put the fear of Brad into the 45+ podium, putting them on notice for the rest of the series. I watched Ducky rail corners on the very edge of control. Rachel, taking the first turn off the starting straight, showed me something about taking a turn at speed, and Jason, very early in the our race passed me with the ease and texture of a tub of whipped butter. Incredible work team!

San Jose Cougar Cross Weekend
An abbreviated DFL squad packed the team bus Saturday morning with the full cast of the junior supporters club and drove south to San Jose. Our destination was race 1 of the Norcal Cyclocross Series, the Cougar Cross, and a cx course etched into a hillside someplace vaguely south, south-east of downtown.
The defining feature of the course was a run-up-ride-up hill-climb combo. The bottom of the climb was defended by a barrier, requiring most to dismount and run-up 25 yards, and the top was another 40 yards of reverse ski-jump, how many more times can I do this, guilt-fear-anger-and-shame inducing hill climbing agony.
The course also had two barrier sections with three barriers each. The first two barriers in each section were positioned together but the third was too close for a remount but too far for comfort. I bet this will be a regular feature in the series and advise everyone to practice hopping or be prepared to run more than usual.

The 35+ A race was scheduled for an hour. My race time was just over 1:05 for eight laps, almost twice as long as BASP #1. On account of some key mechanicals to other riders, I finished 8th. My lap times were consistent except for laps 3 and 4 when I was questioning the nature of things, and for lap 7, when I would have traded my first born for a drink of water.

As for Rachel, the couch is looking more like a love seat or an overstuffed chair. She obviously was not troubled with any metaphysical problems and cranked out another outstanding race. Fast off the line she played follow-the-leader for a half lap before activating her you-can't-hang-with-me-I'm-DFL superpowers to Mach the fire road decent and off camber hillside traverse. Foiling through the duff like the Team Oracle AC72 (races 12 through 19) she appeared to levitate across the course, keeping well ahead of the competition and winning by1:20. Rachel's lap times were consistent and fast, winning the most important metric of all, the Household Average Lap Time (HALT) comparison. Of course, like Big Daddy said, winin' ain't easy. Rachel's podium visits have prompted poaching attempts from other local teams who would apparently prefer to see DFL's star rider in their own kits.

BASP #1
Yesterday was the first big cx race for many people here in the Bay Area, with the Bay Area Super Prestige hosting their series opener at Candlestick Park. This early in the season you can usually count on it being warm, dusty, and bumpy. Luckily we had an early rainfall last week, so the dust and sand was kept to a minimum.
This was the first race where most of the DFL Team were out and racing together. We had a good showing in the M45A, M35A, and Elite Womens fields. With no surprise, we even took our first podium and victory in the Elite Womens field. Rachel Lloyd did not disappoint and rode off almost from the start to a commanding victory. We are honored to have her racing in the DFL kit this year. She is the only DFL rider who has ever placed top 10 in the elite cyclocross world championships!!

In the M45A race, Dave Tricamo "Ducky, DT " had a break out race and finished in 6th place. Not far behind was the one and only Brad Koester "DFL Brad, Boozely, The Pickler". Yes, he is back and showing that having a 2 year old daughter isnt slowing him down. Brad finished a strong 11th place.
In the M35A race, I finished 18th place and Sam Lueck finished 21st. It was great having Sam out there racing and I could see him moving his way up each lap.
It was a great first week of racing and it was great to see everyone once again in the norcal cx scene.

DFL #2
The second race of the series was this past Saturday at Murphy's Windmill. Everyone who has raced on this course knows that it is one of the best around. This course offers a little of everything.... Flat grassy sections, sandy, and up and down through the trees. This year there was even a 70 foot run up that made most people cringe every lap.
Jim Hewett once again showed that he is on top form and distanced himself from everyone else after the first lap. In the womens race it was also Rachel LLoyd again taking the honors. He outfits are getting better each race too... I mean who else can show up to a DFL race wearing he past cx worlds skinsuit?
This guy had a really good race and is enjoying a cold Tecate post race.
See everyone this Tuesday!!
DFL #1
McClaren Park was the host to the opener of the 2013 DFL Cross Series. Winners were Jim Hewett for the men and I believe Rachel Lloyd for the ladies (Need to confirm with Coach Blanco). Biggest suprise this race? Brue holding onto a solid 2nd place. Brue and Jim H rode away from everyone after the first lap. With maybe two to go, Brue tries to separate himself from Jim. By the next lap he blows and Jim is a good 30 secs in front. Jim H held that gap for the remaining of the race.
