If problematic fiction didnt exist, then surely neither would unrealistic and irresponsible depictions of trauma and abuse??
um, no? because even if we didn't had fiction as we know it, people will still have unrealistic depictions about trauma and abuse inside their heads. that's inevitable, really.
calling for the censoring of problematic fiction based on the fear that people will just take it as face value, is a misguided need for control.
let me also say that it's not the responsibility of a fiction writer to display reality in their works perfectly. their sole responsibility is to captivate an audience. it is however, the audience's responsibility to not take works of fiction as a reflection of reality.
as a bit of a side tangent, i wanna add that everyone can, and is actually encouraged to, interpret the moral ramifications of art. to ask yourself the question of "how does the majority of the audience see this and how will this affect reality?"
but that question should follow through to a deeper understanding of the art. like, to accept that even reality does have, as it always had, misleading depictions about trauma, abuse, actions, consequences, and the nature of humanity itself. we can't really "change" that per se, but as an audience we should freely talk about our critiques. that whole process is gonna help us have a more decent world than censorship ever will.
( also, sometimes it just nice to portray horrible things in the "wrong way". i literally do this all of the time, and i think it helps me cleanse my soul. like taking out the trash, y'know? )
