I don't like the deadcrow ship. Never have. It's the reason why I now read the tags because beforehand I was just like "oh it's got people I like!" And now I need bleach for my brain. My fault entirely let's be real. I personally believe anyone who writes it and justifies it with "that's just how Caul acts" is reaching a little too far. Not actually their fault, Caul is a complicated character that can be taken in numerous ways. I support writing of any kind (obviously within reason to what I am comfortable with and how far I am willing to let things go). Deadcrow is just a little too far for me though and I truly don't understand it.

let’s look at Caul properly:

I think his obsession with his sister is not something born out of whatever malicious love thing the fandom has going on and yes I am saying this because I don’t like the idea of sweet home Alabama. I truly believe that Caul’s obsession with Alma is something born from the Ymbrynes themselves (who obviously then blamed it on Bentham but I’ll get to that which I should state now is a biased opinion and so is most of what my argument is but what isn’t a biased opinion these days).

Alma was obviously favoured, right? She was powerful, the youngest Ymbryne, very much doted on by others. Now imagine that in Jack’s / Caul’s perspective: the reason why he was kicked out of the family home is now being worshipped where she stands because she happens to turn into a bird, something Caul presumably can’t do (yet -or even better, he’s already mastered), and he’s obviously already dealing with some mental problems and just wants the attention from others that he feels he deserves. He’s lonely, quite possibly neglected (form of abuse) in favour of Alma and yet he’s expected just to suck it up like his older brother. I might be looking at this from all the wrong angles but no wonder Caul acted out and started hurting Alma. Jealousy is a very strong emotion and if it gets him attention - well in his mind that’s a win.

Looking at Caul as an adult we see he harbours a lot of resentment toward Bentham. When Caul was acting out and hurting his sister it can be assumed that Myron was blamed for Caul’s behaviour constantly. Myron seems like the type of person to just accept that as reality and not fight it. Myron just accepts anything bad that comes to him, just going with the flow, and Caul loathes that. No wonder he tries to put his older brother down every time he speaks to him. He sees Bentham as weak for not standing up for himself or for what is right. Even Caul knows that Bentham should never have been blamed for his childhood behaviour because where were the adults? This, paired with Bentham’s attempts to stop his brother from hurting Alma (because no matter what Peregrine says but I would like the other side to the story) causing Caul to lash out more because of all the people to understand why Caul dislikes(?) Alma, surely that would be the eldest himself who fought tooth and nail to keep his siblings safe when Alma got them kicked out. Why would Myron try to defend her? Remember, in Caul’s twisted mind, Alma is the root of all their problems right now and Myron supporting her and the Ymbrynes is not helping his little fantasy he’s created in his head.

I believe that Caul’s obsession with his sister isn’t from a place of twisted love, rather, he truly hates anything that he sees as weakness. Him hurting Peregrine? He’s showing he’s better than anything the Ymbrynes have ever stood for. By making Peregrine seem lesser than she is, he’s finally getting that validation that he’s been wanting for so long. He hurts people for power. Imagine hurting the most powerful Ymbryne? What could they do? Caul would have proven he’s better than everyone.

This is probably a super obvious point to everyone and admittedly it’s been a while since I last read the books and I haven’t finished the series. This is just how I personally see Caul.

My actual question, which has taken me two goes to get to which I have to thank @marygih and @bloodstainedthesnow for helping me finally reach this conclusion and hopefully not offend more people because I am terrified of people yelling at me but I digress.

What I am actually asking is "why do people write such out of pocket ships?" I don't personally see the attraction. Is there an actual reason why deadcrow is so popular or has it spawned from newer fanfic writers seeing ships with pedofilia or sibling love and deciding that's how they get noticed? What's the psychology to it? I am here for genuine answers and I want all opinions. If you think I suck for even thinking Caul hates Bentham, tell me about it. I welcome everyone.

I wrote a fanfic that touches on this topic that bothers you (if it was mine you read, I'm sorry for the trauma) and you can be sure that as an author I don't ship them. And I don't approve of anything Caul does; in fact, the vast majority of authors are like that too. It's just fiction, none of it is canon, none of those characters did any of that. The characters are not faithful to the canon, and these situations are not real. Most people write for fun, or just to shock, or because they want to. I'm writing because I saw some people talking about the topic and I thought about exploring it in depth, and I had a LOT of support from the fandom at the time. It's something people want, so if there's an audience for it, there's a reason for it to exist.
