this is only my theory, but i believe sebastian is indeed the demon from modri’s memories—he simply doesn’t remember it. whatever happened between them, most likely involving the recently introduced demon hunter, seems to have left sebastian injured in some way. perhaps i’m wrong, but my current interpretation is that he was banished from the human world, suffering both wounds and partial amnesia as a result.
that would explain why, when ciel asks him whether he remembers anyone who might hold a grudge against him, sebastian visibly twitches.
the english translation uses “recall,” as in to bring the memory of a past event into your mind, and often to give a description of what you remember, but the japanese expression carries a slightly broader context. “身に覚え” refers to being aware that you’ve done something. so it’s not just “do you remember someone who might hold a grudge against you?”, but rather “do you have any recollection of something you’ve done that would make people resent you?” it shifts the question from a person to a situation that led to it.
he avoids answering—not because he cannot lie, but because there is no single answer that would be true. yes, there is someone who tried to kill him and harbors resentment toward him. and yet he cannot remember who that someone is. and perhaps it isn’t even a human at all. and he might not remember, why they are targeting him in the first place.
his behavior doesn’t come from an attempt to be entertaining; rather, he simply doesn’t know how he is supposed to tell it or where he would even begin his own story. ciel realizes that sebastian is not as invincible as he initially claimed to be. perhaps sebastian fears that revealing he has already been defeated once might alter the dynamics of their relationship. it is important to remember that this takes place three weeks after escaping the manor and the revelation that r!ciel is a doll. sebastian had doubts about whether ciel would choose to leave him and return to his brother, so even though ciel ultimately chose him, he does not want to give him additional reasons to lose faith in him.
even if sebastian wanted to explain more, how would he do it when he knows something must have happened, but he doesn’t know what exactly, because he has lost his memory? that’s why he feels such relief when ciel interrupts him, answering with “it’s all in the past.”
“if we really did have a past relationship, i’d prefer to settle things peacefully,” because the last time it cost him far more than he was willing to admit. based on the clothing styles, probably around a hundred years passed between his encounter with modri and being summoned by ciel. a century taken from his life—time that could have lasted longer, if not for ciel, and he doesn't want to go through the same thing again, that's for sure.
