Hey, whump community. I’m Griffin (he/him). I’m a queer, neurodivergent transmasc writer in my early thirties, and I’ve loved whump for as long as I can remember. My current passion in life is putting fictional trans guys through all kinds of whumpy hell, sometimes for catharsis, sometimes for kink, and sometimes for processing the current political hellscape we live in. Mostly it’s just for fun.
I’d love to make some new friends in this community, so if you’re 18+ please feel free to follow me or reach out to me so I can follow you back. You can also send me asks with any ideas or requests if you’d like.

you can pull recovery whump tropes/cliches from my cold dead hands. every time a caretaker waits at a distance for whumpee to touch them first, only to have that moment be when they fall asleep on their shoulder and they are DESPERATE to be chill and cool and not freaking out theyre so not brimming with excitement over this- an angel gets its wings
I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.
and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
You know what, fuck you. *Romanticizes the monstrous in a way that is deeply compelling to people who feel they've been ostracized from mainstream society in one way or another, and also at least a little bit horny*

Your characters are allowed to be bad people. Your story is allowed to have no moral lesson.yyour ending is allowed to be sad. The villain can win. The good person can do something unforgivable. The lovers can destroy each other. You are allowed to write the thing that no one asked for and everything that everyone told you doesn’t work and you are allowed to not explain yourself.
Two things absolutely changed my life as a writer. You ready?
One- as OP said, your characters can be bad people, they can do bad things. There doesn't have to be a reason or a moral. You can make them bad if you want to. No other reason needed.
Two- it doesn't have to be good, it just needs to be written. On my last book i literally wrote the words "dumbest version" on the top of the page because I had seen some advice to do that. It changed everything. I stopped trying to make it perfect, I just tried to make it. Period. Full stop.
And honestly? Defiance is the best writing I've ever done. All because I let my characters be bad and I gave myself the freedom to write it badly.
yknow there’s something to be said for a Whumpee who, no matter how many times they’ve been hurt or how long they’ve been in their situation, continues to beg or fight or resist in some way
not because they necessarily think they can stop or overpower Whumper. In fact, maybe by now they know that they can’t
but because there’s still a stubborn little voice inside of them saying, this is WRONG, I don’t deserve this, nobody deserves this!
and they feel like that’s one of the only things that’s keeping them human
healer whumper who carefully tends to whumpee's wounds post-torture. they take extra measures to make sure whumpee will recover properly, and by the time their treatment is over, it's as if whumpee was never injured. this gives whumper infinite possibilities on what they can do to whumpee, because they know that no matter how bad the injuries get, whumpee will never die under their watch, and can thus be tortured to their heart's content :)

on “the blond,” “the older man,” and other crimes against third-person limited
You know that thing where a story is written in tight third person limited — we’re meant to be inside someone’s head, seeing the world through their thoughts — and then suddenly the narration says “the blond frowned” or “the shorter woman sighed” about a person the POV character knows really well?
That’s called antonomasia — using a descriptive label instead of a name. And it’s fine when we’re talking about strangers: “the cashier handed her the receipt,” “the tall guy blocked the door.” The POV character doesn’t know their names, and we just need a quick way to tell people apart.
But the moment it’s used for someone the POV character already knows, it breaks immersion. Because that’s not how our minds work. We don’t think “the older man smiled at me.” We think “Mark smiled.” Or maybe “my boss” if that relationship matters in the moment.
Third person limited means the narration sits inside someone’s perception. Their inner monologue is the story’s voice. So when you switch from “Mark smiled” to “the blond smiled,” you’ve pulled the camera away from their mind and turned it into an outside shot.
If you want to create distance or irritation, you can do it on purpose —
“The idiot from accounting emailed again.”
That’s character voice. That’s judgment. That works.
But otherwise?
As soon as your POV character knows someone’s name, use it. While we do tend to worry about repetitions, names rarely register as such to the readers.
If you need variety for rhythm, use relational or emotional identifiers that make sense in their head: her friend, his partner, their teacher, the person they loved.
Because inside someone’s thoughts, there are no “blonds” or “brunettes.”
”Word of advice,” he had said. One of the first things they said to each other. “He gets rid of you if you stop fighting.”
His voice was hoarse. It was always hoarse, right up until the end.
You didn’t think much of it at the time. Of course you wouldn’t stop fighting. What he was doing to you — to both of you — was wrong. There’s no way in hell you were going to just lay down and accept it.
Then weeks went by. Months, probably. Maybe years. It was hard to tell. And it never let up. And you watched him get quieter and quieter. Watched him struggle less and less each time he was taken away.
You tried talking to him. Reminding him how unfair this was. Stoking his fire. You think it helped, for a time. But he began to always give the same reply. “I’m just so tired.”
It was lonely now, without him. You tried not to dwell on it. Tried not to think about how the pep talks you were giving yourself are the same ones you used to give him. Tried to focus on staying alive.
You’re vaguely aware that you used to be determined to stay alive until you were rescued. Or until you had a chance to escape. You haven’t thought that way in a while. You’re not sure when you started trying to stay alive long enough to warn the next one.
your honor i like my characters suffering and breaking down after not being able to be vulnerable or emotional for long periods of time and being terrified of irrational things because of past trauma
Write whatever you want. Write that incredibly niche thing that only two other people on earth will get. Write the super indulgent cliche thing that makes you kick your feet giddily. Write the angry rage story that whumps them all and makes people cry.
Whatever it is that YOU want to write. Write it. Because only YOU can.

say it with me. you do not have to be working through something to like whump. you do not need to have trauma to enjoy hurting/seeing characters get hurt. your ocs do not have to be self-inserts or reveal deep and buried parts of your psyche
"I have depression." - character who has been through extensive therapy.
"I feel dead inside all the time and nothing helps!" - character who does like, regular introspective thinking and is aware of the concept of mental health.
"Leave me the fuck alone I'll be fine once I get over my stupid shit." - repressed character.
"It's fine I'm just having an Empty Time. What? Yeah, empty times, you know, when everything is like bzzzzzz in your brain and you don't shower for two weeks. Why, what do you call it?" - ooooughhh now we're talkin
#this post is a jillion times better than all the posts that complaina bout therapyspeak #this one SHOWS the relationship between characterization and conceptualization #of depression #as an example of that relationship in general (via @rubynye)
I get in the dumps at times, and don’t open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and I’ll soon be right.
