āI live with my mom and uncles. Ā There are twelve of us in one house. Ā Everyone is sacrificing so that I can go to university. Ā My mom works in restaurants and cleans houses. Ā All her money goes to my tuition. Ā She always tells me just to focus on school. Ā We were short on money last semester, but she told me: āDonāt worry about it. Ā Iāll find it. Ā You just continue.ā Ā Sheās always been like that. Ā She never wants me to be stressed. Ā My dad passed away when I was a young child. Ā So weāve always struggled. Ā Sometimes when I was growing up, there would only be enough for one meal. Ā And my mom always said that she wasnāt hungry. Ā I didnāt realize until I was older that she had only been pretending.ā

āMy English is not good. Ā Spoken English is very difficult. Ā But I want to study at Columbia so I am trying to improve. Ā I decided to come to America because of Forrest Gump. Ā Iāve watched the movie five times. Ā I like Forrest very much. Ā Forrest is very simple. Ā He picks one thing, and he keeps going. Ā When I was young, I thought Forrest was stupid. Ā But now I have a different view. Ā I think people are too complicated. Ā They complain about everything. Ā Forrest never complains. Ā Forrest chooses one thing and he keeps going. Ā I watched the movie last month to encourage me. Ā My life is hard because people donāt ever know what Iām saying. Ā But I just think of Forrest. Ā Forrest figured everything out because he just kept going.ā

āI always wanted to be a mental health therapist. Ā Ever since high school, Iāve enjoyed encouraging people and giving them hope. Ā But I lost my way. Ā I got caught in a world of addiction. Ā I lost ten years of my life to drugs. Ā I stopped when I became pregnant with my child, but by that time it was too late to go back to school. Ā I started working as an office manager. Ā I never completely lost my dream. Ā But I just put it on a shelf for thirty years. Ā Then five years ago I toā¦ok it off the shelf. Ā I heard a lady in my choir talking about how she enrolled in community college. Ā I drove there the very next day. Ā I was so nervous when I filled out the application. Ā I was so nervous the first day of class. Ā All the old voices were telling me: āYou never finish anything.ā Ā But I said āfuck youā to the old voices. Ā And I started getting Aās. Ā On my first test, I got the only perfect score in the class. Ā I graduated at the age of 50. Ā I got my Masters at 55. Ā And just last night I completed a mental health first aid course. Ā Iām so close now. Ā Thereās still fear there. Ā I used to be afraid of it never happening. Ā Now Iām afraid of it happening. Ā The old voices try to come back sometimes. Ā They tell me: āYou can rest,ā or āYouāve earned a break.ā Ā But Iām not stopping this time. Ā Somebody out there is waiting for me to finish because they need my help.ā
āIām afraid Iāll live a useless life and nobody will remember me. I donāt feel a strong interest toward anything. If I do, itās just a momentary thing, and then I drop it. I tried acting. I tried swimming. I tried dancing. But I got bored with all of it. If I donāt choose something soon then Iāll leave nothing behind. We only have a certain amount of energy in life. If you donāt put it somewhere then itās wasted. I feel like one of the little yellow minions from that movie. They get sad if they donāt have a villain to serve. When I have a goal, and Iām moving toward it, and I reach it, then I feel a little relief. Thatās what life is to me. A series of goals that you move toward. I donāt think itās possible to just become happy. Lifeās not that easy. But if you keep moving, you can forget that youāre sad.ā (Moscow, Russia)
āI quit my job earlier this year. Iām taking a little time to focus on myself. I worked from nine to six everyday. I often brought my work home with me. I was getting sick, and anxious, and I wasnāt sleeping well. But I could never accept my weaknesses. Iād see other people working harder than me, and Iād think: āIf they can do it, why should I feel tired?ā Eventually I pushed myself so hard that I became depressed. One reason I couldnāt slow down is because my entire family is hard working. Both my parents are architects. My grandfather is an engineer. The importance of hard work has been passed down through the generations. I think the entire country is afraid to stop working. There have been so many hard times. Thereās been so much hunger. For so long we had to work all the time just to survive. Even though things are better now, thatās a difficult to psychology to escape. Iām starting to interview for new jobs. But Iām asking different questions. Money is the last thing I worry about. Iām much more interested in the schedule.ā (St. Petersburg, Russia)
āWe were pretty poor back in Mexico. My parents were divorced. Mom did the best she could. She was always a hustler. Sheād sell jewelry, or food, or anything that she could. But a lot of nights there still wouldnāt be enough to eat. Weād survive on tortillas and salt. I was only eight when we came to America. So I was too young to understand. I think my mom thought she could make some money and bring us home. She thought sheād learn English, and maybe start a business. But it was so much harder than she expected. We moved so much looking for work. Sheās fifty and she still cleans houses every day. Every year she gets more worn down. Sheās been getting sick a lot lately. But she canāt afford to stop. She never will. Right now Iām in school. I always thought I had to be the best student because Iām undocumented. I thought Iād go to law school, or graduate school. But now Iām not so sure. My mom would literally destroy her body to make that happen for me. How could I allow that to happen? Iām a Dreamer. And everyone loves the Dreamers because weāre a perfect package to sell. But why am I the only one who gets the chance to feel safe? Whenever I hear āI stand with Dreamers,ā I always think about my mom. Iām not willing to throw her under the bus. Iām not willing to be a bargaining chip to make her seem like a criminal. Everything people admire about Dreamers is because of our parents.ā
āI had an awakening on a balcony in Seattle. I was listening to soul music on my Walkman. And I was paying attention to the music. And suddenly I realized that I was the attention itself. I realized that Iām not my mindāIām the awareness of my mind. Weāre all just drops of consciousness and if you get to the point where you can turn around and see your drop, youāll discover that itās connected to an ocean of consciousness. And then youāll be illumined. I donāt care if anyone believes me. Iām not trying to convert anyone. Thereās nothing to convert because everyone is exactly where theyāre supposed to be right now.ā
