First off, I'd heard a few complaints from fans beforehand, mostly about the focus on characters rather than actually explaining the circus mechanics and creation, but I think they're wrong. It's clear that tadc is CHARACTER FOCUSED– it's message is clearly about the self. The circus is a LENS to look though, and was never intended to be the main subject of the story. I thought that this episode perfectly ended the series, and the few questions that still remain are reflective of how the characters don't know everything and they have to make peace with it. I think some fans viewed "escaping the circus" as the goal of the show, but the true message was always about finding meaning (even in a repetitive or stagnant life) and creating connection with others. I totally understand that some people were excited to hear about the worldbuilding and later felt disappointed, but that's what fanfic is for I guess!

Also shut up about "Jax and the amazing digital circus" or "Jax: the movie". I get it if you don't like him, or if you wanted other characters to have more spotlight, but 1. He wasn't the main attraction for a lot of the previous episodes. 2. He's a good character (I'm gonna yap about him next. 3. He's the perfect character to focus on if you keep in mind the message of the show. 4. Gooseworx can do whatever she wants in her show, YOU can do whatever you want on AO3. Go write fics!

Also I KNEW I KNEW that Jax was transfem I KNEW (yes it's not outright said, but use your eyes and your critical thinking here!). I always hc-ed him as being trans, at first I thought he was transmasc but I very quickly changed my mind and moved in with the transfem truthers. Seeing that scene in episode 8 where Jax is tortured through his skin peeling off while everyone laughs was a perfect representation of what it feels like sometimes to be trans (at least for me as a trans guy lmao). Having it be so heavily implied in the finale not only created familiarity and representation, but also just added a whole layer of complexity. Bonus points with how SAD it is that his human self is still living a male life, and circus Jax never got to feel true euphoria. This kind of representation, the sad and messy and horrible side which fucks up someone's identity so much that they lose sight of who they are, becoming detached and cold— that's so rarely even talked about, let alone represented, and I think it's perfect. It's real. I love characters who serve as a warning if you relate (like Bojack Horseman). He is a cautionary tale, and his story does not erase all the damage he's done.

Having happy queer rep is obviously good, but it felt really refreshing for me at least to show that it's not all sunshine and rainbows for a lot of trans people all the time.

ANYWAY The Amazing Digital Circus has been such an amazing milestone for art and animation. I've been following it since the first episode, seeing its growth, and also seeing how inspirational it has been for artists everywhere. In a time of AI stealing artists' jobs, the success of tadc: its popularity, going onto Netflix, being shown in cinemas... Is a HUGE thing for the present and future of indie animation. It went out with a tremendous bang (and now maybe the creepy side of fandom can die).
