Take a Knee

Believe it or not, I played a lot of sports growing up. When one of my teammates was hurt on the field, we took a knee. When one of the opposing players was hurt, we took a knee. It is a sports tradition that spans the Mighty Mite football fields of McDonald Park to the sidelines of Ford Field. Kap takes a knee because “there are bodies in the street.” I admire and support his actions, as well as those of Malcolm Jenkins, Steven Means, and Ron Brooks, the Howard University Cheerleaders, as well as the young men of the Detroit Edison Football team, and many others.

Over the weekend Terence Crutcher was murdered. My heart breaks all over again. But this time, it breaks twice. Once for another senseless murder of an unarmed Black man at the hands of the powers sworn to protect him. And twice for the silence of the Kap critics. My heart breaks because there are those that yell and scream, beat their chest, burn his jersey, spit racial slurs, and call Kap a traitor for taking a knee in silent protest, but are now silent, consciously choosing not to stand up (or take a knee) for their brothers and sisters, their fellow Americans, that are victims of state murder with impunity.

For those that are angry at Kap for taking a knee but indifferent (or worse) about Terence Crutcher’s murder, why do you stay silent now?

I’ll take a knee.
