And everything will be alright.
LIKE OLD TIMES ↳ "That's right! And I'd say you're a lot more than just my minion these days...“
hansry is sometimes misrepresented by fans as a lord x knight romance when in actuality henry is of much lesser status and i think that dynamic is equally intriguing if not more. while henry could in theory be MADE a knight for his service over the course of the games, his bio father may be a knight, and he is kind of in something like military service to his lord, he is a commoner. so the power imbalance that (coupled with the sense of devotion) makes the lord x knight dynamic so intriguing is even more pronounced, especially in intensely hierarchical medieval society. hans isn't treating another member titled, landed elite like an equal behind closed doors, not letting another lord into his bed. he's letting the village blacksmith's son - who, as of a few months ago, was illiterate, had no formal education, had (to his knowledge) nothing beyond a passing secondhand business relationship with the nobility, and no expectations of ever leading a life more complicated than marrying a girl from skalitz and spending his days making horseshoes- into his bed, and his confidence. That Hans sees Henry as something like his equal, in some way, as shown when telling Henry about Galehaut and Lancelot, is soooo. first of all, improper. second of all 😏
it is especially intersting if you notice that Henry doesn't merely do stuff for Hans because he is a knight in Hans' service (he isn't) or because he's a peasant who is following Hans' orders. He is doing stuff for Hans, crazy stuff one might say, because he cares about Hans. Not for the title, not out of obligation or to get a reward. He cares about Hans as his best friend, not about Lord Capon the lord of Pirkstein. And this is another huge breach of medieval hierachical protocol. Because in doing so, Henry lowers Hans to the level of "common ~20 year old", in a way opposite to how Hans elevates Henry. And Hans is okay with it, even before Henry's biofather is revealed (something he comments on I believe)
Their entire dynamic is how they are equals, want to be themselfs as equals, despite society saying that they are not and will never be.
Yeah, Hans comments at the end of KCD1 that its more appropriate for him to be freinds with a noble's bastard. He confirms that he already elevated Henry to an equal, to someone he can call a friend, way before his parentage was known. Hans chose to befriend the son of a blacksmith from a burned village who had nothing to his name.
Even early on, before they even really become freinds, Hans invites Henry to his noble pastimes (the archery competition, the practice duel). Sure, he teases Henry about his station, but he allows Henry to be rude to him when Bernard calls him out. He later in the hunt apologizes to Henry first. He is treating Henry like an equal from very early and Henry does the same towards Hans, not hiding his opinions from him and calling him out immediately.
They just kinda imprinted on each other very quickly social class be damned. They know its improper. Hans mentioning it is proof enough, but they don't care.

I couldn’t find the post I was looking for but it was about how sera gets called racist and bigoted and annoying for criticising the dalish (due to being a 20 year old dealing with internalised racism and struggling to find her identity in a world where she’s only acknowledged as an elf as a target of racism or when compared to the dalish as though she’s not being an elf properly) but when Solas criticises the dalish he’s called wise and knowledgeable and people think that yeah maybe the dalish are worth criticising (and he’s criticising them because he’s a genocidal maniac who doesn’t consider them people and is planning to kill them)
Think that’s a good example of the whole “you hate this character because she’s a woman, you would like the same traits in a male character” thing
I love your compositions so much! Composition is my weakest point as an artist, I’m curious if you have any tips/recommendations/things you do/exercises? I want to learn from people who are doing it well!
Fortunately, composition is technically VERY simple! The hard thing about it is training your brain to actually stick to the "rules" that are, in retrospect, obvious.
These are the pillars of composition to me: -Have your focus be the center of the frame. -Lead the eye from the focus to secondary details through the use of color and positioning. -Everything else in the picture simply does not matter that much.
Common mistakes: -Overdetailing everything regardless of the plane it's on or position in the frame. -Nailing the composition, but picking light that shifts the focus away from the subject unintentionally. -Awkward cut-offs at the edges.
Here are some of my pieces and how I applied that theory to them - I'm not saying they're to be upheld as perfect examples of composition! Rather I just want to show my thinking in practice:
(Notice that despite being in the background and having way less detail, Astarion is still the focus point due to his color palette!)

Like I said, it's mostly about changing the way that you THINK while drawing and holding back from overdoing things when there is no need to. It's a skill you develop by being present while you practice, and doing a little bit of planning before even touching pen-to-paper. In time, it becomes second-nature.
This should go without saying, also, but rules are made to be broken! There are instances where doing the opposite of everything I just said can be VERY effective, but it takes understanding the base theory of such things first to apply these exceptions correctly.
