My looks from costume con 35. Had such an amazing weekend. Side bar the hotel mirrors were amazing for selfies. Entered two masquerades (thank you to all the judging panels for the acknowledgements of my work- the awards all really mean a lot to me) and had the privilege of judging the historical masquerades (which involves off body costume interviews and reviewing contestants research) which is so cool. A first look at "apeiromorphic" (part 1 of 2)for you all. It somehow came together, with only a month and a half of prep time (while working full time) I consider this a small miracle. BIG NEWS! This is why I have been absent from social media. I am launching my very first fashion line! "Apeiromorphic" is small collection which will be shown at two events in Ottawa this spring (details in future posts)! In nature, species that present two distinct forms are called "dimorphic". Most common and notable is sexual dimorphism; for example, the male peacock's iconic tail. Humanity, despite having almost invisible dimorphism, clads itself in stark definition and segregation between our two "accepted" genders. Fashion as a creation, and as a phenotypic trait of our societal structure, has become dimorphic. In stark contrast to the male peacock, who display their flamboyant feathers to attract mates and scare predators, the male human dresses somberly in a strict and chaste display,while the female is expected, if not required, to maintain an unrealistic "attractive" image. Ironically, also in stark contrast to the peacock, humanity has a choice in its external display of identity; we can molt out feathers and regrow them in any shape we can imagine. Apeiromorphic (the prefix apeiro referring to an infinite sided shape) is a small avant guarde concept collection about humanity's infinite potential to self express. Final design I submitted to the costume con 35 future fashion folio (check it out on http://costumecon35.com) btw if u want a high res of any of these for reference just send me a msg. The final design was based on the final tarot "the world". Like the rest of my designs I took the heroes and villains theme for the folio literally to make characters that were both hero and villain- using the tarot cards and the inverted meaning to create personas that represented both. The world is about the completion of a cycle a fulfilment and celebration, but it is important not to rest on our laurels and always aspire to the next dream. MORE DESIGN TIME. This is 4/5 designs I submitted to the costume con fashion folio (check it out here http://costumecon35.com) I'll be real with you guys this one was based on Olivia Pope from Scandal as Mary Antoinette era hero/goddess. Each of my designs was based of a tarot and how it positive and negative aspects makes it both a hear and villain (to fit the theme of this year's folio). The card in play here is the Wheel of Fortune. I am a giant Scandal nerd, and have always loved Kerry Washington's character as this awesome force more powerful then the government itself. To me she is already the embodiment of this tarot (which is about the natural order rod things, and fortune always restoring a balance and order... Or "bringing things into the light") but I wanted to give that a physicality. The idea that secrets and wishes make this world go round and a person who caught everyone's wishes in her skirt of wind catcher ribbons, then used the giant pinwheel on her back to set the winds of change into motion to grant them. In many ways she is just a hero but with this much power and knowledge should she ever use it selfishly it could be disastrous. FROST Con! Meet the Hermit! Yay second design for the #costumecon #futurefashionfolio (check out all the beautiful designs at http://costumecon35.com) This design was based off the "lovers tarot card" (for more on my tarot theme and how it applies to the hero and villain theme for this year's con check out my previous post 8D). The lovers card has always been my fav in the deck and a deeply personal one at that, for me it is about opposite energies coming together to find balance. D-d-design time! So some of you know I submitted some designs to the #costumecon #futurefashionfolio which you all should check out through their website: http://costumecon35.com (so many beautiful designs). I am so honoured to have five of my designs feature din the folio (for people to hopefully cosplay as). The theme was "heroes and villains" which I took very literally to design five characters who where both hero and villain. I took inspiration from the tarrot cards and the idea that the same card inverted can mean something opposite, and created characters and costumes that represented the potential for both aspects of their card. #TBT now maybe it is the cold meds I am on but there is a funny story behind this pic I feel I should share. So this photo was taken during #wcs2015 at a very class event (see where this is going it is about to get unclassy guys) and we were to get ready at the venue. To make a long story short I got all my make up and ears on only to realize I forgot to pack... Appropriate... underwear and as you can see that slit goes all the way to my waist. And by appropriate I mean underwear that was not hot pink with stripes. So anyways this ended with me, in elf ears running to a convenient store in downtown Nagoya in heavy make up and elf ears to by underwear (side bar bless Japanese convenient stores and their actual convenience). So I promised I would let you all in a little more on my process. So here is a look at my next costume design and mock up it is a historically accurate Ice Queen Elsa. Whenever I am doing something original I always always pin up the fabrics in a hot mess of how it may look to make sure the colour blocking works out. In this test run I discovered for example that the over skirts should only have two tiers instead of three and while I had planned for them all to be in different fabric they look better in the soft ice blue and will be change more by the trims. I had also planned to use more novelty fabric but they took away from The historical feel (personally I think the 1840's romantic era already has such an air of fantasy about it) so I will leave that to the embroidering and rhinestones that will be on the finished look. #elsa #frozen #historicalcostume #silk #costumecon #elsacosplay #historicalelsa #1840 #1840sfashion #costumedesign
