The King's Spear

Arthur leaned against a closed-down food stand, arms folded as he gazed on into the night sky, watching and waiting to see if the other party would indeed arrive.

“Flat,” Arthur spoke with an air of concern, “I would greatly appreciate if you’d try to stay a little closer to me than you are now.”

True, from this distance, Arthur could easily overtake any sneak attacks, but he’d much rather discourage such things from occurring in the first place and save some hassle.

“…”

He glanced back over his shoulder. A little ways away was Artoria, waiting in a flanking position. If matters got dicey or an ambush ensued, she could easily charge in and run the enemy through before their Master could come to harm.

Either way, tonight was officially their first night of the Grail War. Best to set their cautions early.

Standing under the shade of the carousel a few hundred meters away, far enough away to be out of peripheral sight and close enough to enter the fray if need be, Artoria tapped her foot. It was always the moments before battle that worried her the most, and with Flat involved, it only farther frayed her nerves.

Regardless of what happened tonight, the only way that someone was going to harm her Master was over her lifeless body.

Arthur surveyed the girl with brows raised – partly out of concern, partly out of intrigue. He glanced back to Artoria for but a moment…could this girl be–? Indeed, in his boyhood, he wouldn’t put it past himself to blunder like this but… It also seemed a bit too straightforward.

No, no. He couldn’t just take this at face value; it was all too suspect from the onset. …That being said, these two were starting to make a scene, holding up the line to boot.

“Oh dear, isn’t my face red… We weren’t expecting company today~!” Arthur’s stance blocking them off doesn’t yield, however. He looks over to Artoria, clicking his tongue. “Ahhh, must be your side of the family, right, luv? I can see some resemblance for sure… Perhaps we could meet up again a bit later?”

Arthur leaned upon the clock mounted to the side of the line, drumming his index and middle finger on it…

The fingers were almost exclusively drumming over a single number: the twelve at the top. Dead midnight, well after the park had closed. Despite his sustained smile, Arthur’s emerald eyes had taken on a rather stern gleam to them.

“Ah...” Now that she had a chance to look, it was a bit easier to see. After all, she could remember the mirrors and ponds from her childhood, that face reflected back at her. How young was that version of herself? “I think you might be right. A cousin.”

Arthur’s expression turned with mild concern, shooting Artoria a meaningful glance – be ready for whatever might be about to happen. Taking a decompressing breath, he turned towards the enemy Master.

“I’m terribly sorry, sir, you seem to be mistaken~!” Arthur spoke in a sing-songy manner of tone. “Our Kay wasn’t holding anything but his cotton candy~.”

Which, Arthur noted, Flat had either been clever or lucky enough to have set into the hand where the other’s Command Spells would typically be. Excellent work, Master, you’ve disabled his seals.

“More to the point… You said he’d dropped something and yet– you’ve pocketed it, before even arriving here?” Despite his continued kindly smile, he quirked up a suspicious brow. As Flat turned to board the ride, Arthur took a deliberate step halfway into the path ahead, a cue for Artoria to do the same and block the other off. “Forgive me for being so bold, sir, but– might there be a reason you’re following my family?”

“Mmh, It would be nice if you simply told us, why you’d be so keen to speak with us.” Stepping forward, standing shoulder to shoulder with her counterpart, Artoria smiled. She might not have been so inconspicuous as she liked with her eyes shimmering with repressed mana. 

Then again, who were they fooling, when the game was clearly up.
