4000 holes, Salavanh Province, Lao PDR by Explore Laos Via Flickr: Erosion over millions of years have caused peculiar formations in this area of Salavanh, known as the 4000 Holes. These types of formations are known as "giant's kettles" or "potholes", and are formed from water flowing over rocks and debris. Fish with feet, Xaysomboun Province, Lao PDR by Explore Laos Via Flickr: One of the country's unique fauna is the Laos Warty Newt. It is an endangered species of salamander only found in the shrublands and rivers of Xaysomboun and Xieng Khouang Provinces. It was only discovered by scientists in 2002. Vang Nam Yen, also called Cool Spring, is a great cooling off spot for locals and tourists alike. It is a blue lagoon fed by water flowing out of the nearby limestone mountains. Vendors nearby sell local snacks and drinks. Please remember that Lao people are very modest, so dress appropriately if you go for a swim. In English, it is also commonly referred to as the Limestone Forest. There is a popular viewing area on Rte. 8 about 65 km west of Lak Sao. The Xekaman River is fed from the picturesque Nong Fa Lake, which locals believe is sacred. It is surrounded in myths and legends and is said to be protected by a golden rooster that regulates the level of water in the lake and sometimes shines a light up through the waters. This water has magical properties. Located about 45 kilometres from Muang Xay, the capital of Oudomxay, this 12 km long cave has a river flowing through it, giving the choice of a dry or wet cave experience to the intrepid traveler.
