Hiya there! So recently I’ve noticed some toxic behavior amongst every stretch of the internet, and that behavior is ship shaming/hating. Now, I’ve been blessed with a very wholesome community so far and have received nothing but positivity from my followers, which I appreciate more than anything. And this message isn’t coming from a saint who has never ship shamed. Because I have. And I’m ashamed of myself for contributing to such a toxic passtime.Â
Recently, I’ve gotten into a netflix original anime called BNA. I love the artstyle, story and voice acting. Altogether, a fantastic find and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys simple action animes. From this show, I ship Michiru and Shirou, they have a dynamic I adore and the height difference is too cute to pass up. I was browsing fanart and little things like this when I went to the comments to chat amongst fellow shippers. Boy was that a mistake. There were some people saying “Oh, I don’t ship it, but it’s cute and I totally get why people do!” and to those people, I applaud you. Way to be positive!Â
But amongst those little messages, were a sea of people saying “EWWW, why on earth would you ship that?! The age difference is just too much, and Nazuna and Michiru are so much cuter, why even bother?” To clarify, Shirou is an immortal, so he’s been around for a 1000 years, Michiru just turned 18. Now, I am not going to defend my ship. I don’t need to and nor do I want this to turn into a hateful post. But I want to address this. If someone likes a character, a ship or show you personally do not like, you can do one of two things: state your opinion in a kind and positive way, so that people don’t feel attacked or shut up.Â
It’s absolutely fine if you don’t agree with something, but it doesn’t give you the right to go and attack someone else for liking it. We should be angry because someone shows hatred towards something, not because someone adores something.Â
That’s like getting mad because someone’s favorite color is yellow, and yours is blue. It’s a personal preference and you do not get to tell someone whether it is right or wrong. There have been far too many toxic communities on the internet, and that needs to stop right now. This should be a place where we can speak freely and not fear backlash for having a differing opinion. And for the love of everything good in this universe, there is so much hatred already in this world, do we really need to start bashing people’s opinions on silly little CARTOONS? It is a fictional reality, the entire point is that it’s not real. But if you take the time to post a negative comment on someone’s fanart or fanfiction that they worked very hard on, please get a life. And I understand if the ship contains pedophilia or is portraying an abusive relationship, that you don’t like it. I am not a fan of those ships at all, but how about we just don’t look at those ships and fanart. We can’t change those people’s minds, so why bother wasting our energy on it?Â
Anyway, I know what I say won’t change much and there are a million posts out there like this one, but how about on this one, we just post positive comments below. Only happy thoughts to brighten someone’s day or even your day! I know this platform can be used to spread positivity, so let’s give it a shot! I hope all you lovely, beautiful, kind people have an absolutely fantastic day! Oh and thank you all so much for being so kind supportive, I really think I’ve struck the community gold mine!
