You know, for all the crap that I give Guardian Devil (for a variety of reasons including one very obvious ones) it does mention, bring up and tries to address something not so flattering about Matt.
Namely, that he may actually have some legitimate issues with women. Now the idea was posed by Natasha at the end of the story when she and Matt were discussing how much of a total dick he was during the story, but you get the feeling that Sm*th noticed that there’s actual precedent with the notion that might have influenced the story a bit.
Just with his dealings with Karen there’s:
His making out with her in front of Natasha
Thinking that the best time to confess that he was Daredevil was at her father’s funeral
Hell hitting on her while posing as his twin brother in general
Cheating on her with Mary
Throwing her history as a drug addled sex worker in her face (Yes, he threw the fact that she’d been taken advantage of in a huge way in her face. While they were under the impression that she’d contracted AIDS might I add)
And probably a few other things that didn’t immediately come to mind.
Yeah she gave him up for a drug fix, but he wasn’t always great to her either. And Guardian Devil even started with the reveal that she’d left him to take up a job in Los Angeles, in part because of their issues, citing that he tends to have trouble forgetting, even when he opts to forgive. Though she also cited that she felt she was becoming too dependent on him to fix her problems for her, which is another talk in general.
Then there’s him with his other girlfriends.
Natasha left him because she didn’t care for how he treated her. Just in general being a cad and undermining her because she was a woman if memory serves right. (Even in the 70′s she didn’t care to take that shit)
Cheated on his catatonic wife with Dakota
Mind wiped Kirsten and then broke up with her
His relationship with Heather in general, but let’s not forget that a few callous and thoughtless remarks on his part were the straw that broke the camel’s back that led directly to her death.
In short, yeah, he’s got a history of being not so great with women, whether he’s consciously aware of it or no.
There’s no major point I’m attempting to make here, just a few thoughts that suddenly came to my head that I wanted to jot down before I forgot them. But it does bear mention that for all the crap I give that story, it’s nothing new for Matt in the slightest.
one thing I believe should be more heavily influenced in the roleplay community ( that really isn’t respected ) is the RIGHT OF REFUSAL. not everyone has to say yes to a roleplay, even if you delivered sugar-coated candied comments abt their portrayal / characterization / etc. if you give those things, it should be from your HEART, and not because you are attempting to ENTICE them into writing with you.
with refusal comes MAJOR ANXIETY – most writers don’t feel comfortable saying that they don’t want to write with someone, and it is because they want to avoid hurting their feelings. believe it or not, there are KIND ways of telling someone you don’t have an interest in writing with them – and those ways should be respected. do not make someone FEEL BAD for not wanting to write with you; and do not FORCE them to tell you their reasoning. as long as they are kind, you should respect their decision and not be rude towards them.
