Old Finnish beer advert. The six-pack conveniently comes with a seat cover for sauna. And a good amount of Finglish. (NSFW)
âNever grow old.â
Is it possible for Donald Duck to make you cry? When watching this Finnish advertisement for Donald Duck magazine it seems like so.
Something just flew in my eyes.Â
Perkele itâs cold. But I wonât give up!
More official note
As I stated in the last anon ask, I will not be updating the blog anymore. I just donât have time anymore and it feels rude to keep you waiting for posts that might never come. But I really hope that somebody does the âHow to do Finnish foodâ cooking post.Â
If you liked this blog and want to look for alternatives, go to Facebook and search for Funland. That page has loads of content similar to my blog.
Thanks for all you who followed me. Thank you who liked and reblogged my posts. The ones who corrected me with spelling and facts. It has been educational and a great lesson in so many different ways.
Best wishes for you all
DF

âUpdate your blog or delete itâ
Unfortunately I donât have time to update my blog anymore. But I really donât want to delete it either because there are posts that are still being visited, read and reblogged.
So it stays.Thank you all for these years. It has been a blast and Iâve learned so much from my own home country.
Finland isnât depressing. It never was. Despite that one week in April when I set up this blog.
Halp!
Joudun istumaan jonkun randomin vieressä bussissa 1,5h. En voi hyvin, ellei hän osaa historiaa.
I just randomly spotted this from a random tumblr-Finn but I have to reblog this because it just capsulizes the Finnish anxiety for unwanted, uncomfortable human proximity in public transport
âIâm in a bus and I have to sit next to some random person for the next 1,5h. I donât feel well. Unless he knows history.â
I feel your pain.
How do you know youâre in a Finnish home?
Itâs not Finnish flag in every pillow or decorative item youâll see. Finnish flag is commonly considered somewhat a sacred item. The Finnish flag has strict law how it is supposed to be flown and taken care of. Therefore items that have Finnish flags are not really common in Finnish homes. In Finnish home youâll probably see Finnish flags usually only in small tourist memorabilia, or when people celebrate some national flag-raising day or have really formal family party, such as wedding.
Finns like to celebrate Finnishness by decorating their homes with Finnish design. If you spot furniture from Artek and Lundia, decorative items, curtains and sheets from Marimekko, plates, glasses and cups from Arabia and Iittala, kitchen equipment from Hackman and your quilt and pillow are made by Finlayson, you can be pretty sure youâre in a Finnish home.
But if you find a sauna and itâs warming up for you, then you can be 100% sure youâre in a Finnish home.Â
Pilvinen päivä lahes
When you have to pose, you Have to pose. Even in Finland
Guess who this is? Just another hipster grandpa? Nope. Heâs actually one of the most popular Finnish presidents of all time, Urho Kaleva Kekkonen in his fishing garments. The photo is from 1975.

Insulting someoneâs mother in Finland
In Finland itâs very uncommon to annoy someone by insulting their mother. Therefore insulting someoneâs mother is not very effective, itâs more like a very weird way of derailing from the subject of the argument and leaves people more confused than angry.
We sure do respect and love our parents, but you probably wont see Finns getting extremely offended when you tell that their mother is stupid, fat or whatever.Â
Someone might even ask âWhere do you know her from?âÂ
Anything positive you wanna say about Finland?
Silence, variety of weather, clean environments (mostly), good internet connections and such things. There are plenty! These are the first ones to pop in mind.
Oh, and Fazerâs blue -chocolate. Havenât found anything like it to this day.
What does a Finnish guy generally mean when he says 'I like you'?
Well I can tell only by my own experience but every time a guy has said to me âI like youâ he has had a crush on me. For some it has been just a crush, for some âlikeâ means âloveâ.Â
But sometimes he just means he likes you.
Rule of Fist
The Finnish word ânyrkkisääntĂśâ translates to ârule of thumbâ. The literal translation is ârule of fistâ.
--Fan submission, thanks makelix!
Also one noteworthy saying is âSopii kuin nyrkki silmään!â, fits like a fist in the eye. Finnish equivalent for âfits like a gloveâ.
NI!
Do you know Monty Pythonâs The Knights Who Say Ni?
Did you know that when you end your phase with âNi!â or âNih!â in Finnish you basically say âI do what I want and I really donât care about your opinionâ eg
"This is my day, I can wear whatever I want! Nih!â - Antti Tuisku

I just realized that the word "lihaskimppu" word-to-word translated is muscle bouquet
And itâs used to describe a very muscular person. Look at that Bull Mentula, what a bouquet of muscles!
I wonder if I actually should dedicate a whole own post to Bull. Heâs a quite of a phenomenon in Finland after all...
Would you like to explain the 'kuha on varaani' meme for everyone? Personally I love it way too much and find it hilarious(hiiri) btw, I love your blog ^.^
You mean this one?
Oh yes. The funs of Finnish language. There are two meanings of this sentence. It can either say âPike perch is a lizard (varanidae), why notâ in written Finnish but if you read it as if it was spoken Finnish it says âAs long you can afford it then why notâ.
