It’s been a little longer than a week! Have been playing around with ridgeline charts in R, thanks to the R Graph Gallery. Data from the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System open data portal. Removed fire reports with no known cause (including probable causes) and no report date.
Was trying to get more stylized but still had fun using inventory data.
So it’s been longer than a week, but I had time recently to have fun with spatial data. Tried to figure out how to replicate some of the basic graphic maps seen in infographics. The outcome (nothing to do with forestry). Playing around with colour.

Map #1! I’ve been told in the past that my legends need work and, as this was a quick map produced over a few lunch hours, I’ve (alas) lived up to my reputation: no units, no quantities in this legend. Just a relative scale of density of largish trees in poor or dying condition in the City of Guelph, ON.
Felt a bit poorly about using the City of Guelph Forestry Dept’s amazing open data resources (tree inventory online! among other data) to produce a map showing areas of poor quality trees, but promised myself the next one will highlight something more positive about Guelph’s urban forest. Not hard to do, since it’s a beautiful city where a lot of residents love trees.

I’ve decided to return to DendroGraphics! Have challenged myself to produce a map every week or two without taking it all too seriously. In other words purely for the fun of it!
