In fanfiction I drop a name from canon I never referenced before and it will carry the weight that a hundred pages of set up would carry in original fiction.

Why is Zeus considered to be so important and respectable when he’s constantly cheating on his wife? Because the cheating thing isn’t ‘baseline’ canon, it’s a result of a bunch of different places in Greece wanting to have their own personal Original Character Do Not Steal And They’re Half-human Half-god!!!

Why Ares is such a prominent god in Spartan society when he’s such a clown in so many myths? Because he was one of the patron gods of Sparta (who weren’t big on the whole written literature thing), and also because Athens (who wrote down As Much As Possible) had Athena as their patron god, and Ares and Athena don’t get along (similarly to how Sparta and Athens didn’t get along). And, because they were written down so much and so frequently there, a lot of the versions of the classical myths we have access to were written down by Athenians, and they had absolutely no qualms about bashing their enemy’s fav as loudly and frequently as possible.

Why are the gods so inconsistent in their personalities and actions? Because the Greeks were getting up to all this for Hundreds Of Years, and as a result the gods got re-characterized, reorganized, combined, separated, cross bred, and literally everything that happens in old fandoms like Arthurian legend or Robin Hood. These three three mythologies/folk tales are actually a great example of what literature/story-telling back then probably looked like.

And it’s really similar to how ideas go from headcanon to fanon in modern fandom spaces. Like, in the fandom for Magic Kaito, it’s common for Kaito to be characterized as having a phobia of fish and being very fond of sweets. These are aspects of him that are based on a couple scenes that are canonical, but the extent that fandom has built them in regards to being part of his core character is not. It’s a form of collective story-telling, similar to how the whole Goncharov thing was avant garde take on collective story-telling, where the ‘story’ wasn’t the fake movie itself, but rather the experience and reactions of having seen and analyzing the movie.

I used to prep, wash dishes, and cook at mellow mushroom. I had chronic pain that wasn't NEARLY as bad as it is today, but it was still very debilitating. I told my employer "i cannot stand more than 4 to 6 hours. I CANNOT do shifts longer than this due to my illness." And even though i made my boundaries VERY clear, everyday i worked it was 8 hours at the least and 10 or 12 at the most. I would go up to my manager and say "look i really need to leave, my shift is over, my chronic pain is killing me." And he'd say "we really need to here, you HAVE to push through." And so i did, and after one, ONE month of that job my crps got incredibly worse to the point where i could no longer walk my dog around the block which was .5 miles. I quit, and that was FOUR years ago, and ever since that day I HAVE BEEN BEDRIDDEN AND HAVE TO USE A WHEELCHAIR. It is my biggest regret in life.

My best friend who has seen my whole journey has recently developed undiagnosed chronic pain, and she is in the EXACT same scenario i was 4 years ago. Busting her ass at a pizza place with extreme pain that hurts her so much she tells me "im in so much pain i don't even feel like a person." She doesn't feel LUCID. And her manager and coworkers are saying the same thing "if you don't help us you will let us down, we'll be in the shit."

Holly Mop who was beside me in bed got up and trotted into my office. Came back into the bedroom and very daintily spat out a single potato chip.

Which has revealed two things:

A) that she does understand more of what I’m saying, and in true Shih Tzu fashion,chooses not to listen and

B) there’s a stash of stale potato chips somewhere in my office I’ll need to find tomorrow.
