Y'all should be thanking us early 2000s black Tumblr users for the popularity of Gifs.
racist book alert: we need to talk about THE BLACK WITCH.
harlequin teen has a new book out in may 2017 called THE BLACK WITCH by Laurie Forest that has been hurting a tremendous amount of people in the bookish community through its extremely racist content. hereâs a post by a young WOC that will hopefully give you an idea about what books like this do to us.
here is a very detailed review that recaps the plot and mentions all the problematic content. from establishing that biracial people are âhalf-breedsâ, to slavery and rape as plot devices, to a whole arc about racial impurity because of mixed race heritage ⌠this isnt even half of the dangerous content in there. there is also a lot of homophobia and ableism.
hereâs what you need to do
review the book on goodreads to attract the publishers attention (they need to notice that we wont tolerate racist books)
if you can, also send an email to harlequin teen
talk about the book, make your own posts all over social media
boost everyone who mentions the racism in this book
inform people who plan on reading it of the racism
make sure you listened properly: ive seen a lot of people condemn THE BONE WITCH by Rin Chupeco instead which is a beautifully diverse book by a woman of color.Â
Be an ally to people of color and do this for us.
you need to spread this harder.Â
I was just informed that THE BLACK WITCH received a starred review from a very important trade publishing journal (Kirkus) which is a BIG DEAL and will lead to it ending up in more libraries and book stores.
Hey, also, we should be doxing the author.
YO, DO NOT DOX THE AUTHOR. Doxxing is not the answer or the solution. This is one of many books that points to a giant problem in publishing as an industry. Doxxing the author does not do anything to make changes for the better. Under no circumstances is doxxing acceptable. DO NOT DOX THE AUTHOR. Generate awareness by sharing the review, THATâS IT.Â
DO NOT DOX THE AUTHOR THAT DOES NOTHING FOR NO ONE. THAT IS NOT OKAY IN ANY SITUATION.
Y'all saying that Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth is racist af bc it shows POC as savages and uneducated people but literally every fanfic/headcanon/theory portrays Illyrians (the canon POC race in the acotar world) as The Actual Worst⢠and as people who are backwards and have no concept of love and comradery and loyalty.
After Feysand come back to the camp after their chapter 55, Illyrians are shown grabbing their wives and children and shooting into the sky to protect them from any potential harm that might come due to territorial instincts. If Illyrians just used women as breeding machines and saw children as potential warriors they wouldnât do that, if they truly had no value for anyone other than themselves they wouldâve ushered them into homes and flown them far away and dropped them off. But no, they grabbed whatever family they had and circled the skies above until Rhys and Feyre had gotten it out of their system.
I ainât here for double standards so sort your shit out.
Oh ffs what kind of trash â in defense ofâ post is this
Iâm sorry if you think that, but I assure you Iâm not defending anyone.
Both SJM and VR made large mistakes but in my experience from the fandom Iâve only seen VR get flack for it, even when SJM wrote her POC race in a disgraceful manner. I also saw a lot of people hating on VR to get on the âcoolâ bandwagon which irked me quite a bit since it shows that they donât truly feel these effects and are angry about them, rather they just blindly follow what their favourite account said.
This was merely a post pointing out peopleâs habits of turning a blind eye to their favourite authors problematic (and sometimes shitty) writing. And then pretend to be intellectual by talking about whatâs popular. Â Â
No oneâs turning a blind eye, and to throw one under the bus to protect a book you like is literally a trash move.
Umm you may not have seen the same posts that I did but yes, turning a blind eye to your fav authors books is a common on tumblr dot com
Also, what???? I d e k what youâre saying anymore??? When did I through a book under the bus to protect another one?????????? I called out both Veronica Roth and Sarah J Maas????
Cool.

Confused as to why people think authors like SJM have a responsibility to cater to their every little need about what kinds of characters should be included in their books. If you donât like a book because it doesnât have enough black transgendered characters in it then donât read it. Or maybe write your own book so you can create characters that meet your standards. But attacking SJM because there are a lot of white characters in her books? Like ?? I donât understand why people think she owes them anything? Itâs her book and the best sellers list kinda contradicts your claim that âmost people find her characters bland because theyâre white.â Hearing people say her books are âproblematicâ is so obnoxious like oh my god not everything has to be political, read the book because you enjoy it, and if you donât? Put it down and find a book you do enjoy!
Woe what a privilege thing to say.
Also, shut the fuck up.
Thanks, From everyone.

JUST LETTING Y'ALL KNOW WHERE THIS BLOG STANDS.
Reblog every time it hits my Dash
Hey Mary! I just wanted to say that I'm proud of you for liking what you do. This community is becoming more like a police state, where we are being censored to keep our followers or to please the blogger overlords. Books should be like art, some people appreciate them while others don't, and everyone gets something different out of what they read. Unfortunately, now we are being told what to think about certain books, we can't have our own opinions and if we do we must keep quiet. Keep being u!
Thank you so much for your support, love <3 Sending loads of hugs your way <3 <3 <3Â
Did someone really compare this community to a police state.

âEveryone has darkness inside them, however hidden.â
I donât get this whole thing of âthis book is problematic you should never read itâ thing because if you pick apart any book enough, you will find problems, and also, if youâve not read the thing, then you cannot see or understand why or how its so-called problematic?
Like, I read 50 Shades purely so that when I complained about it, I knew what I was talking about. I didnât just go âoh I heard from one person about this soâŚâÂ
Like yes, I get educating people on how to or how not to write minorities, and I get that some books can be terribly ablist and stuff, but someone can still read that book while understanding that some phrases in it have issues. You can still enjoy some aspects of it- be it writing, or setting, or characters, while knowing that the views of the author, or even the characters, are not the views that you believe or agree with.
