Black Sheeps

For 37 years it’s been up there on the flat roof of Mark Gubin’s building in the flight path of Mitchell International Airport. A sign painted in letters 6 feet tall tells people arriving here by air: “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND.”

“There’s not a real purpose for having this here except madness, which I tend to be pretty good at,” Gubin said

Above that the roof, he was having lunch one day in 1978 with a woman who worked as his assistant. Taking note of all the low-flying planes, she said it would be nice to make a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee. “You know what would even be better?” Gubin said.

The next thing you know, he’s out there on the black roof with a roller and white paint creating the sign that would bring more notoriety than anything else in his long career. A story about his confusing message ran in thousands of newspapers and magazines, on national TV news, “The Tonight Show,” Paul Harvey, all over.

“Well, Deidrich… We’ve been dating for a while now and since I’m more comfortable with you, I’d like to play a game.”

Will took a drag of his cigarette, dropping his sterling silver lighter into the pocket of his casual trouser before walking over to their personal bar and picking up some choice bottles, laying in on the ground of the living room floor along with a few pillows, glasses, and the ashtray right in the middle of a little circle he created.

He then pinched the pant legs up before seating himself on the floor, looking up at the other and gesturing for him to sit across from Will.

“Come sit.” Another drag. “And we’ll begin.”

He took a cig out from his choice pack, leaning over to Dei and placing it between his lips. He fished for his lighter and lit it… Then snatched the stick from Dei’s mouth and replaced it with his lips before putting it back where it was and taking a drag of his own.

Will sat back, and it was clear he was quite comfortable. The gel in his hair was fading, his waves showing through…the sleeves of his button-down were rolled up and a few of the buttons were undone so his chest peeked out, he was wearing a simple pair of house slippers and he sat with a knee propped up, the arm which held his cigarette draped casually over it. This is what ‘home William’ tended to look like after work hours.

“I was thinking we play a little game of truth or dare.”

He moved to pour himself a drink, figuring Dei would finish his flask before pouring his own.

If anything, the German wanted to taste more of those pale pair of lips his boyfriend shared when William’s suggestion broke him from his thoughts. “Alright, I’ll bite.But what kind of day did you have that you wanted to try this, hmm?”

Knowing William, hever liked to try new things. Could their relationship really come so far he was finally opening up to Dei more now? The thought brought a red tint to his otherwise pale cheeks as he took another swig from his flask.

Will picked up his glass, putting the cigarette out and instead drinking.

He continues to take shots of his flask to force the heat on his face down. He hated blushing around William, not only did it embarrass him but it also fed his darling’s ego.

He leaned back, his smirk ever present on his face. He wasn’t acting like himself at all tonight. Well, not as anyone really knew him. But he was with his boyfriend and he wasn’t at the office… So he didn’t really see anything wrong with being a little flirtatious.

“W-Well…” He coughs, deciding to down the last of his flask to keep his composure steady. “I-I guess…the day after our first time together? I mean, I still hated you but afterwards you acted differently from the jump.  I got to see how much of a lovesick dork you could be.~” He teased, hinting at how possessive William became shortly after their secret affair in the office. “It’s really hard to tell considerin’ how much of an ass you can be. Love and hatred just kinda blended together until I couldn’t decide anymore.”

He smiled a little sheepishly as Dei called him a lovesick dork. Had he really acted so possessive after just one interaction? He supposed he’d already claimed the German in that moment… Nothing else mattered since then.
