 MioSERV S270 Smart Kiosk :  A New Era in Modular Innovation

 MioSERV S270 is the flagship of MiTAC’s new product line, designed as a key strategic initiative for 2024. This innovative product integrates modularity and versatility, offering unprecedented flexibility to meet a wide range of applications, making it an essential asset for future business opportunities.

At the core of the MioSERV S270 is a commitment to design excellence and high functionality. The modular capabilities not only extend its range of uses but also open new doors for business growth by allowing seamless adaptation to various customer needs.

Design Process: In the initial stages of development, we made a rapid prototyping approach, creating a 1:1 plastic corrugated board model and 1:3 scale 3D printed prototypes. This enabled the project team to quickly engage, collaborate and iterate, accelerating the design process and boosting team efficiency. The quick production of these models allowed for faster ideation and refinement of key features.

While the industrial design of the MioSERV S270 is sleek and modern, its true strength lies in the collaboration with mechanical engineering. The combined efforts ensure that the product is not only aesthetically pleasing but also engineered for optimal functionality, allowing the product to be easily adapted for various modular applications. This design approach underscores the importance of close collaboration between ID and ME to meet the product's ambitious goals.

With MioSERV S270, MiTAC has redefined what it means to integrate cutting-edge design with practical, adaptable technology. It’s a product that delivers exceptional performance and opens up a world of possibilities in modular solutions.

 The MiVue R850D is Mio’s latest flagship model in the rearview mirror DVR segment, pushing the boundaries of innovation and usability. This project involved a series of groundbreaking developments and rigorous UX testing to ensure superior performance and adaptability across diverse automotive environments.

 Mio / Navman MiVue M820WD

 The Mio MiVue M820WD is the first-ever dash cam designed specifically for motorcycles, offering riders added safety features. Alongside Mio's impressive DVR performance, it includes accurate GPS directions and reminders for safe speed limits. The set includes a main unit, cameras, and controller, all of which feature IP67 waterproofing, sleek design, and flexible installation mounts that fit various motorcycle models and installation positions. 

With two main unit options – practical display information or completely concealed within the bike interior – the MiVue M820WD is an ideal DVR for all types of bikers, even the most discerning.

Motorcycle dashboards are inherently limited in terms of the amount of information they can display, leaving riders with critical gaps in their knowledge while on the road, such as real-time speed limit reminders. The designers of the MiVue M820WD aimed to provide additional value beyond just driving records by adding graphical safety assistance. Despite this, they continue to prioritize the essence of a DVR, which is reliability. As a result, we continuously improve the product in terms of appearance, installation, and reliability of each part, ensuring the highest quality of Mio DVR.

Therefore, we developed a monitor prototype that can be installed on the motorcycle handlebar, and conducted on-road tests to verify the effectiveness of the display and sound alerts, ensuring that the feature is beneficial for the bikers.

 Mio MiVUE 848 Series: Redefining Dashcam Design

The Mio MiVUE 848 represents a major breakthrough in dashcam design, addressing key challenges in product identity and cable management. Traditional Mio products adhered to a fixed design language, limiting fresh innovation, while cable management issues often led to unsightly, protruding cables, compromising both aesthetics and functionality. To overcome these limitations, we reimagined the product form to make it more discreet and integrated, while developing an innovative active cradle that manages cables for a sleek and seamless solution.

Discreet design: Enhancing integration with the vehicle’s interior.

Cable management: Concealing cables for a cleaner aesthetic.

We understood drivers' expectations for a discreet dashcam – one that is always ready when needed, while minimizing distraction during driving. Balancing these requirements posed a challenge.

“Why not make the device itself the mount?”

We redesigned the dashcam, making it a flatter model with a windshield-aligned display panel, and added an adjustable hinge to accommodate different windshield angles. The first prototype was rough but ignited new ideas and possibilities for the team.

As we defined the design identity and collaborated with stakeholders, one common question about the prototype was, "It seems similar to competitors—what differentiates us in such a competitive market?"

We were not deterred by this question, knowing that relying solely on traditional Mio advantages like HD night vision sensors and reliable quality wouldn’t be enough. We needed to push for more innovative design value.

Additionally, cable management was one of the most common concerns for dashcam users. Despite our meticulous design efforts, the sight of a dangling cable always undermined the aesthetic.

I’m still grateful today that our engineers didn’t dismiss my bold idea: an ACTIVE CRADLE.

The active cradle is a small, electronic transmission part that connects the dashcam to both the windshield and the power supply, while concealing the cable plug. The idea was to insert the USB plug into the active cradle, mount it on the windshield, and allow users to easily attach and detach the dashcam via a well-designed mechanism.

Thanks to our engineers, the active cradle’s PCB was successfully miniaturized, with the USB plug concealed inside, and we were able to shape it into the iconic Mio capsule form.

Launched in 2020, the MiVUE 848 became known for its discreet design, easy mounting, and elimination of bothersome cables. While the process and output were not perfect, we created a truly differentiated model that encouraged us to explore even more creative ideas for future models.

 Splendor: The Smartphone Case with a Switchable Wide-Angle Lens

 In the early days of mobile photography, wide-angle lenses were not yet standard in smartphones, and built-in camera capabilities were significantly limited. Photography enthusiasts seeking a broader field of view had to rely on external clip-on or screw-on wide-angle lenses. However, these existing solutions were often bulky, inconvenient to install, and difficult to store, limiting their practicality.

Splendor revolutionizes mobile photography by integrating a switchable wide-angle lens directly into a protective phone case. Unlike traditional external lenses that require manual attachment, Splendor features a side-sliding mechanism, allowing users to shift between the original and wide-angle lens in just one second—effortlessly enhancing their shooting experience.

Design Innovation

To achieve a seamless user experience, we drew inspiration from the precision of a utility knife’s sliding mechanism. The result is a metal sliding rail system that ensures smooth operation and long-term durability, providing a reliable solution for mobile photography on the go.

Additionally, Splendor is engineered with a dual-layer protective structure. The inner layer is designed to fit snugly against the phone, offering cushioning and shock absorption, while the outer shell provides robust protection against daily wear and tear. This combination ensures both enhanced functionality and device security without compromising portability.

Beyond Industrial Design

Splendor was developed under Omvos, an emerging startup, where our design process extended beyond traditional industrial design. The project encompassed:

Mechanical Design: Refining the sliding mechanism to ensure a secure and smooth transition between lenses.

Brand Identity & Marketing: Developing a cohesive visual and messaging strategy to introduce Splendor to the market.

Video Production: Showcasing the product’s innovative features through engaging promotional content.

Retail & Packaging Design: Crafting an intuitive unboxing experience that aligns with the premium nature of the product.

Through this experience, Splendor not only redefined smartphone lens accessories but also broadened our expertise across multiple disciplines, blending product innovation with brand storytelling.

With its seamless sliding lens, durable construction, and refined design, Splendor stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, user-centric innovation in mobile photography.

Panic Button Design Proposal for Fleet Vehicles

 For fleet vehicles such as trucks or buses, the CDR (Connector Driving Recorder) is typically installed above the windshield, out of easy reach from the driver’s seat. To enhance user safety and convenience, an extended panic button is essential. This project presents a comprehensive approach to the design, from market research to installation considerations, usability testing, and final concept development.

Market Research & Usability Study The design process began with a thorough analysis of the market. I studied existing panic button designs used in industrial settings and public transit vehicles, noting key features such as intuitive shapes, ease of access, and cost-effectiveness. I also investigated the installation environments for CDRs in fleet vehicles to understand spatial constraints and driver accessibility issues. This led to the identification of critical design principles: intuitive user interaction, adaptability to various vehicle types, and an emphasis on cost-efficient manufacturing.

Concept Development With insights from the research phase, I developed three distinct design proposals, each focusing on different aspects of functionality, usability, and aesthetic appeal. The goal was to create differentiated concepts that could be easily adapted to a variety of vehicle models while meeting cost and installation requirements:

Proposal A: Intuitive Triangular Button A triangular button design, inspired by the universally recognized emergency triangle symbol, makes the panic button instantly identifiable. The shape ensures quick recognition under stress, improving user response time.

Proposal B: Circular Button with Flexible Bracket This design features a red, circular button, a common form in industrial and machinery settings. The addition of a flexible iron bracket allows for easier installation and adaptability to different vehicle configurations, providing both practicality and robustness.

Proposal C: Integrated Plastic Button Taking inspiration from the mouse cover design, this concept integrates the button directly into the plastic casing of the CDR. The elasticity of the plastic allows the button to be molded in place, reducing production costs by eliminating the need for separate components. This design also minimizes the space required, aligning with the project's goal of space and cost efficiency.

Design Differentiation and Challenges

Creating distinct proposals was a challenge, but by focusing on structural innovations, I ensured each design was differentiated in terms of appearance, functionality, and usability. Key factors of differentiation included:

Appearance: From sharp, geometric forms to softer, ergonomic curves, each design offered a unique visual appeal.

Application: The designs were tailored to accommodate a wide range of vehicle types and installation conditions.

Usability: Each concept was designed to ensure the panic button would be easy to use under high-stress situations, whether for drivers or emergency responders.

Cost Efficiency: The materials and manufacturing methods were carefully selected to optimize both cost and performance, ensuring that the designs were viable for large-scale production.

Conclusion

This project showcases a complete design process— from market analysis and environmental research to concept development and differentiation. The three proposed panic buttons offer flexible, cost-effective solutions that enhance safety for fleet vehicles. By addressing both user needs and production constraints, these designs effectively balance functionality, usability, and cost-efficiency, ensuring they meet the demands of the fleet vehicle industry.　

When creating a product presentation, I usually start by sketching a storyboard to plan the content and layout of each slide. This significantly improves efficiency when assembling the final presentation.

Gaos Home Sign: A Family’s Touch of Creativity

Designing a home is a journey, and for our new place, we decided to get the whole family involved in creating a personal touch—our very own home sign. After brainstorming ideas together, we reached out to a few neon sign vendors. While the traditional glass neon signs had so much character, the price was a bit steep. So, we went for a modern, more affordable choice: flexible LED neon tubing, which is safer as well!

The next challenge was installation. The transformer was quite large, and we needed a clever way to hide it. Luckily, the power circuit ran through a recessed light near the entrance, making it the perfect spot to tuck away the transformer.

The joy of designing and installing it ourselves was indescribable. This custom home sign has become the warm, glowing highlight of our home, bringing a personal touch and a sense of pride to our space.

Guess whose idea got the final production? Apparently, it wasn’t mine.

Redefining Conference Communication: A Streamlined, Adaptive Design

In response to the increasing demand for seamless conference communication, this device is designed to deliver both functionality and refined aesthetics. With an emphasis on clarity, user experience, and spatial efficiency, it rethinks the conventional approach to conference devices, providing a solution that is both intuitive and visually unobtrusive.

The design prioritizes a clean, streamlined form that integrates effortlessly into modern workspaces. A well-balanced layout ensures intuitive interaction, reducing distractions and enhancing usability. Innovative Acoustic Mount System

 When there is room for new applications, why not do it?

In the world of removable dashcam mounts, there are endless possibilities. For example, placing the GPS antenna higher up is essential for optimal signal reception. By integrating it into the sliding mount, we can combine the sliding slots with the antenna, while cleverly concealing speaker openings within the hook’s operational space. This approach maximizes the sliding mechanism’s potential, fully utilizing available space while maintaining a clean exterior by hiding the speaker ports.

The design effectively balances functionality and aesthetics, ensuring excellent performance without compromising the modern, sleek appearance. By embedding the GPS antenna and speaker port into the sliding mechanism, space is used efficiently, minimizing external complexity. This allows the product to remain compact without losing any capability.

The minimalist design further emphasizes this, with the concealed speaker opening keeping the overall look simple and streamlined. It meets the growing demand for designs that seamlessly blend into everyday environments.

This product showcases a smart fusion of engineering and industrial design, offering not only a functional solution but also a visually appealing one. The thoughtful combination of practicality and style gives it a competitive edge, appealing to users who value both performance and design.

Ergonomic Innovation in Handheld Terminal Design

Designing a handheld terminal demands rigorous UX research to ensure long-term comfort and efficiency. From the early stages, extensive UX and market research were conducted, including interviews with in-house users experienced in similar devices. These studies revealed that weight distribution and center of gravity are critical factors affecting comfort during prolonged use.

Precision-Driven Prototyping

Early design exploration prioritized rapid prototyping with blue foam mockups, allowing for quick ergonomic validation. To refine internal component placement, weighted screw spacers were incorporated into the models, simulating real-world balance and ensuring an optimal configuration.

Adaptability for Diverse Industries

To enhance usability across different work environments, the device is available in two BCR angle SKUs—15° and 70°—providing ergonomic flexibility based on operational needs.

Tactile Optimization for Intuitive Control

Button interaction is a crucial part of the user experience. Each directional button was carefully shaped to provide distinct tactile feedback, ensuring intuitive operation without the need for visual confirmation.

By integrating in-depth research, iterative prototyping, and ergonomic refinements, this handheld terminal delivers a superior user experience—enhancing comfort, precision, and adaptability in professional workflows.

Building a Strong Foundation: The ID Department’s Sample Library

After years of design projects, the ID department accumulated hundreds of design samples scattered across cabinets, drawers, desks, and unexpected corners. To better manage these samples and make them easily accessible for future designers, I proposed the creation of an ID sample library.

To begin, I identified a suitable space near the office and developed a numbering system based on project years and business centers for efficient classification. This system was designed to be easily expandable as the sample library continues to grow.

For storage, I sourced easy-to-assemble boxes from IKEA and customized L-shaped steel frames for the shelves, which fit perfectly in size. This cost-effective solution is simple to manage and expand, making it a practical choice for the long term.

While the planning and organization were completed, the team experienced significant improvements in convenience and accessibility. The project’s success provided a real sense of accomplishment.

Exploring Soft Forms and Flexible Structures in Product Design

Unlike typical hard-shell product designs, creating a textile strap—like the one we developed for this tablet accessory—required a different approach to usability development.

To provide a more ergonomic solution for logistics workers who need to operate the device on the go, such as during inventory checks or deliveries, we designed a strap that could be easily secured to the hand for effortless handling, and quickly detached or attached to a car cradle when entering or exiting vehicles.

Usability was the key focus of this accessory's design, guided by three main objectives: Usability, Adaptability, and Durability, with Usability being the most critical.

In addition to conceptualizing and selecting materials and processes, close collaboration with the UX team and thorough usability testing were essential steps in this project. After several iterations and expert reviews, we arrived at the simplest design that offered the most convenient operation.

Throughout this process, we learned that simpler designs often lead to more intuitive usability. It's important to question whether certain design elements are truly necessary, as this was one of the most valuable lessons we took away from the project.

MiVue i177 Innovative Snap-On Mount 

Due to the requirements of certain sales regions, such as safety and culture, the sales team proposed a need for an active cradle structure that could be quickly detached. This structure is designed to allow the user to easily take the high-value device main unit when leaving the vehicle, avoiding concerns that arise from the device being left on the windshield. This special structural design was therefore created.

During the process, the design team proposed various structures and ideas for the active cradle from different directions. After considering the G-force of the vehicle during operation, which is mainly in the forward and backward directions, a lateral detachable magnetic quick mounting was adopted for the active cradle design. Through close collaboration with the ME team, the internal structure design was successfully achieved, and the designers gained a great sense of achievement.

Digital Sketch: Bridging Ideas and Execution

Digital sketching is a powerful tool for quickly capturing, adjusting, and refining design concepts. Designers can rapidly sketch, erase, add textures, and even design form factors directly onto existing components, enabling a more iterative and efficient design process.

While the digital sketch can closely resemble the final product, it remains a 2D representation of a 3D object, meaning certain details may be difficult to capture without a physical prototype. Nonetheless, digital sketching significantly streamlines the design process, helping designers efficiently refine and finalize a suitable product identity.
