I’m all for #givesaphiraaharem while Murtagh and Eragon remain bitchless (gender neutral)! The potential for the dragons to be smashing nasty while their humans remain codependent, enmeshed, and romantically unfulfilled is delicious (Murtagh refused to speak to Saphira for a week when she offers unsolicited love advice) . Their dragons dating would keep putting these boys in Situations. They’d try to reverse Parent Trap the couple lmfao

ADDITIONALLY, Saphira has a *errm* history of aggressive flirting. The combination of her ramming Thorn with her snoot while going “lmfao, ur such a dork” while he looks into the abyss with a 1000 yard stare bc of flashbacks is INTERESTING!! Imagine the angst due to miscommunication and navigating boundaries before the dynamic of a draconic girlfriend saying, “My mate is showing off his hoard and you better be nice 👹” (Thorn shows off two very average boulders)

and Glaedr’s Eldunari would be in the background “~aM i A jOkE t0 yOu ?~

I like how Eragon and Murtagh both decided to completely ignore the fact that Murtagh kinda tried to kill Eragon in the throne room

#imo it’s less about forgiving murtagh and more about eragon never being allowed to feel angry hurt or conflicted about it #everyone else gets emotional complexity except him #eragon alone has to immediately arrive at the “correct” emotional conclusion despite it being unrealistic #and i think that’s part of why so much of the fandom expects perfection from him too #i have seen fans of literally every single character in the series bash eragon for one reason or another and never hold other characters to #the same standard #he gets criticized for reacting like an actual traumatized teenager to the point where actual blogs and communities have rallied together #to hate him like antishurtugal #while every other character gets the grace to be messy because the narrative treats their feelings #as valid instead of something to immediately move past #for example: eragon has been dragged by parts of the fandom for years for reacting #emotionally to what he genuinely believed was murtagh choosing the empire #and i’ve seen many viral posts saying he deserved to be killed in the throne room or needs to get beaten up by murtagh #but murtagh spends a good chunk of his own book resenting and criticizing eragon and that’s read as trauma #instead of a moral failing #it’s a fascinating double standard #so i don’t think we’ll ever get to really see eragon lingering on any of the things he might have a legitimate reason to linger on #the same way after the bombshell parentage reveal he nearly automatically forgives brom and doesn’t really linger on the complexities of #brom’s choices #i think if paolini let eragon stew over his past the same way he lets other characters do #people would stop pretending eragon has nothing to be traumatized about or had the easiest life ever #but because his pain is constantly fast-tracked into forgiveness and emotional maturity i don’t really expect paolini to change that #pattern and i do think eragon’s character suffers for it because he’s denied the same emotional complexity as others unfortunately #eragon

Eragon would be so completely devastated when another danger hits Alagaësia, when the peace he tried to keep shatters and he realizes that he failed

He would blame only himself for this, even if it won't be his fault, he would still think of it as of his own. When he witnesses more deaths, more destruction, he would consider that as his own failure, loss. Because he knows that he is almost as powerful as a god, with Eldunarya, with the Name of Names and Riders who could help him, yet with all these, he won't be able to save everyone

#can’t wait to see how the shadow threat hinted in eragons guide to alagaesia plays out #where we know for a fact eragon finally leaves his seat at argnor to deal with it

Honestly The Inheritance Cycle does have some really fucking cool worldbuilding concepts, even if the series fell short in a lot of ways. It's a very fun world to play around in.

imo you get the most out of engaging with media when you strike a balance between treating characters as people (reading interiority into their actions, considering the effect of various aspects of their identity, etc etc) and as vehicles for storytelling (what narrative purpose do they serve, how do their actions and personality function to convey the themes of the work, etc etc). because of course characters are literary devices but also there’s a reason we use literary devices written to embody realistic people in order to tell stories
