this is purely speculative, but i think there’s a very strong case that the menoa tree took reproductive material from eragon, with the intention of using it to create a child or new lineage of her own.

first, i'd recommend reading this post by another user who independently arrived at the same conclusion. their analysis focuses heavily on paolini’s interviews and q&as, so i’m going to focus more on what the actual books are doing with the scene and the surrounding imagery.

the obvious starting point is the exchange itself. after questioning eragon about what he is, linnëa asks for consent: “will you give me what i want in return, dragon rider?” eragon blindly agrees, thinking, “whatever the price, he would gladly pay it.” only then does the exchange take place. when the brightsteel emerges from beneath her roots, eragon feels “a slight twinge in his lower belly,” and the tree releases him immediately afterward.

paolini has confirmed that the tree physically took something from eragon, that she had already exacted her price, and that saphira was unaffected.

the most important clue is that linnëa is specifically interested in what eragon is.

before naming her price, she probes his mind and asks, “what are you, rider? i know every creature that lives among this forest, but never have i encountered one like you.” eragon explains that he is neither elf nor human, but “something in between.” the tree then specifically asks why the dragons changed him. she also recalls feeling a “warping in the world” during the celebration.

that conversation is almost absurdly specific if what she wanted had nothing to do with eragon's altered nature.

she investigates what makes him different, connects him to the strange change she sensed during the blood-oath celebration, and only then asks for her price. the sequence strongly suggests that what makes eragon unusual is relevant to what she wants from him.

eragon’s altered biology gives her a reason to want his material specifically. as far as we know, there is no one else like him. he isn’t the end result of a human rider gradually evolving either. paolini distinctly describes him as a step beyond the norm: “he’s actually just a little bit beyond what perhaps a normal human would ultimately achieve as a dragon rider.” if linnëa wanted biological material from which to create something new, there is arguably no better candidate in alagaësia than eragon.

and then there is linnëa herself.

the story of the menoa tree is fundamentally a story about motherhood, loss, and the absence of children. linnëa “had grown old without the comfort of a mate or children.” the young man who finally gave her a taste of the life she had denied herself then abandoned her, and after killing him, linnëa concluded that she could never return to her old existence. she sang herself into the oldest tree in du weldenvarden and became the menoa tree.

paolini has also confirmed that linnëa never had children.

that makes her later relationship with the forest much more significant. the menoa tree treats the entire forest as her surrogate, and paolini has described her as psychologically unbalanced, intensely protective, and obsessed with guarding the forest from intrusion. she essentially replaced the family she never had with the forest itself.

the chapter is also literally called “the tree of life,” and eragon specifically appeals to her as “o mother of the forest” before the exchange.

so when this ancient, childless elf encounters the first person she has ever seen who is biologically unlike anything else in the forest, and then takes something physical from his lower abdomen, the possibility that she wants reproductive material suddenly fits her character extremely well.

immediately after their exchange, eragon takes his brightsteel to rhunön, where they essentially create and birth brisingr together.

rhunön can't physically forge the sword herself because of her oath, so she works through eragon, melding her mind with his and reaching into the “most private areas of his being,” in a sequence that closely mirrors conception, gestation, and birth. the actual creation is performed through singing, spells of making, shaping, and binding, with eragon and rhunön working together through the night to produce something entirely new and unique. as rhunön puts it, “i shall give you a sword the likes of which has never been seen before in alagaësia.”

when brisingr is revealed, eragon explicitly thinks it feels “alive" and he leaves “cradling brisingr in his arms as he would a newborn child.” the sword also carries “a portion of his personality” and responds uniquely to him, bursting into flame at his touch.

so there is a very deliberate creation metaphor here. rhunön provides the knowledge and intention, eragon provides the body through which the creation takes form, and the result is something new that is effectively born from their collaboration.

that makes the menoa exchange feel like a reciprocal act of creation too. eragon takes the brightsteel “seed” from linnëa, which is then used to birth brisingr. linnëa takes a biological “seed” from eragon in return, potentially to create a child of her own.

this is especially relevant because linnëa was one of the most powerful plant-singers who ever lived before becoming the menoa tree. paolini repeatedly associates elven singing with creation and growth. elves can literally accelerate the growth of a tree from a single acorn through song, as they did at wydren’s funeral, and arya says she could sing a child out of its mother’s womb.

so if the twinge eragon felt represents the extraction of a tiny biological “seed,” linnëa is arguably one of the only beings in the world who could take that seed and do something extraordinary with it.

when you put eragon’s addressing linnëa as a “mother” alongside her childlessness, the tree of life imagery, her treatment of the forest as a surrogate family, her fixation on protecting it, her interest in eragon’s unusual biology, and the physical extraction from his lower abdomen, a very specific pattern emerges.

even the immediate setting around the menoa tree is saturated with lineage and reproduction. eragon has just learned the truth about his parentage at the crags of tel’naeír, and then hears from glaedr that the eldunarí cannot reproduce. he subsequently approaches the menoa tree, a childless tree that he nevertheless addresses as a “mother,” and undergoes an uncanny exchange in which something is physically extracted from him in return for something else. the sequence then leads directly into his labor-like creation of brisingr with rhunön.

and notably, this is the only time in the entire series we actually see alanna and dusan in person. two of the rarest symbols of new elven life are present for this particular sequence, alongside maud, a werecat associated with fate and hidden knowledge. eragon ultimately cradles brisingr “as he would a newborn child,” with all three watching.

the story is practically screaming about fertility and the scarcity of new life while simultaneously refusing to tell us what linnëa took from eragon.

arya’s retelling of linnëa and her much younger lover also creates a pointed parallel between eragon and the man who once occupied that role in linnëa’s life, making his encounter with her feel even more charged. blagden, the prophetic raven, is also perched at the menoa tree when eragon hears the story and cries “wyrda!” (fate). taken together, these details propel eragon’s encounter with the menoa tree into a larger pattern of creation, lineage, reproduction, and fate.

there are smaller parallels reinforcing this theme too. eragon later uses a cradle song to heal the newborn hope, tying singing directly to the preservation of a child. elva is another example of eragon accidentally creating a living being who becomes his responsibility, with oromis even framing his relationship with her in terms of a bastard child. throughout the series, eragon repeatedly finds himself involved in creating, protecting, or nurturing new life.
