I think it’s only stupid because it’s a contradicting thing. Americans are often criticized by British people for being stupid and lacking comprehension skills, which I don’t disagree with whatsoever, as I’ve witnessed this myself. However, I don’t think this is an exclusively-American problem—especially during this debate lmfao.

The term bird in America is a shortened version of bird brain, while in the UK, it is used for a girlfriend. (Wow, a word with two different definitions..who would’ve ever thought?) And because the internet loves arguments, I’ve seen videos from genuinely upset British people claim Americans misuse the word, and refuse to acknowledge the other definition for bird. It’s really easy to figure out the meaning behind the American use of the word, as it’s used in situations where women (primarily young women, which is inherently misogynistic, but I won’t get into that now) are perceived as doing something stupid.

Now, I will say that Americans absolutely do love to misuse British slang, like “fairs” and “tea towel (?),” but it’s important to note that bird is not being misused because it has two different slang definitions. Using context is a dying tool online and in real life, and not just America.
