A fungus just solved a problem that's been sitting in landfills for decades.

Researchers at the University of Bath introduced turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) to waste engineered wood panels, the resin-laced kind that usually can't be recycled and gets burned or buried instead. The fungus grew through it anyway. Its mycelium threaded the loose particles into a firm, fire-resistant insulation material, no synthetic glue required, with a carbon footprint over ten times lower than the conventional options it was tested against.

Nothing else wanted that wood. No competing use, no easy path forward. Just a fungus that looked at "unusable" and got to work anyway.

It's the same organism many of us know from immune teas and tonics, still doing what it's always done: finding the overlooked thing, and holding it together long enough for something new to take shape.

Some of the oldest medicine is still teaching us new tricks.
